Dr. Anna Krzywoszynska is a social scientist at the University of Oulu in Finland who studies how farmers and scientists can collaborate to foster regenerative agriculture. An expert on soil knowledge and values, with experience farming organically in Italy, Dr. Krzywoszynska examines the knowledge systems shaping food production. Currently, she's investigating how to transform agricultural research to support local communities, including turning research stations into hubs for collaboration between farmers and scientists. Her projects aim to align scientific inquiry with local needs, promoting community-driven innovation and sustainable land use. In this episode, John and Anna discuss: How farmers see soil as a resource to manage, while scientists seek broad, universal insights. How academic and agri-business structures favor research on general trends over practical, local farming solutions. The community's role in regenerative agriculture, enabling farmers to learn and innovate together. Research stations as potential community hubs integrating local farmers needs into science. Regenerative agriculture's ability to restore hope and reconnect farmers with nature. Celebrating mistakes as essential for learning and growth in farming. New Study Shows Promise for Gamified mHealth App in managing MS-related Fatigue

Trinity researchers have developed a new gamified mobile health (mHealth) app designed to help people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) manage fatigue, one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of the disease. The research - led by Dr Guido Giunti, Adjunct Professor, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and Associate Professor of Digital Health at the University of Oulu, Finland, and researchers from the University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital - evaluated the feasibility, usability, and impact of the app, named, More Stamina over a 60-day period. The study, which highlights the potential of the app, is published in the journal Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders today. "Fatigue is an invisible but life-altering symptom of MS," said Dr. Guido Giunti, Adjunct Professor, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and leader of the More Stamina project. "Managing it requires more than just medication. More Stamina gives people the tools to understand their energy levels, take control of their day, and communicate their needs more effectively." The study followed 20 participants from Oulu University Hospital in Finland, who used the app daily for two months. Key Findings Users became more aware of their fatigue patterns, enabling them to plan their days more effectively. Higher engagement correlated with increased self-awareness, particularly among those with more severe fatigue. The app helped facilitate discussions with family members and healthcare providers, improving mutual understanding of fatigue's impact. Usability improved over time, though some users found data entry cognitively demanding, indicating areas for refinement. An Evidence-Driven Digital Health Solution More Stamina helps users track their daily activities and energy expenditure using "Stamina Credits", a gamified approach that visualizes energy use and helps users make informed decisions about their daily plans. Unlike many digital health solutions, More Stamina stands out for its research-driven approach at every stage, from identifying patient needs to design, prototyping, development, and testing. Each phase has been accompanied by peer-reviewed research, creating a transparent scientific trail for a mobile health solution. Bringing Digital Health into MS Care Fatigue affects up to 80% of MS patients and has a profound impact on their quality of life. Managing fatigue is challenging, as it involves physical, cognitive, and emotional factors, often leaving patients feeling exhausted, misunderstood, and unsupported. While digital health solutions have been increasingly proposed to help manage chronic conditions like MS, few have been rigorously evaluated to ensure their effectiveness and real-world impact. Neurologists at Oulu University Hospital emphasize the potential of such solutions in complementing traditional MS care. While the study confirmed that More Stamina is a feasible and acceptable tool, researchers emphasize that larger and longer-term studies are needed to evaluate its full clinical impact. The team is now exploring ways to integrate More Stamina into broader MS care strategies. Professor Minna Isomursu, University of Oulu, said: "Digital health solutions are only as good as their foundation. We worked with real patients and healthcare professionals from the start to build something truly useful. That is key to creating tools that people actually find useful in their daily lives." Empowering Patients and Strengthening Family Dialogue One of the unexpected yet powerful outcomes of the study was the role More Stamina played in facilitating conversations between MS patients and their families. Many participants reported that sharing their fatigue patterns with loved ones helped them feel understood and supported. More Stamina's development was not just about technology, it was about people. Active participation from patient representatives was key to ensuring that the app addressed real-life challenges. This is episode six and we're covering events at the end of December and into the first week of January. First a quick situation report. The Finns were fighting to maintain control over parts of the road to Raate from Suomussalmi, with the Russians having now decided to send an entire new Division to support the Ninth Army which had experienced some difficulty in the drive to cut Finland in half through what was known as the waist, planning if you remember to reach Oulu the eastern harbour port on the Baltic. Captain Makinen had fought a rear-guard near the lakes of Kuivasjarvi and Kuomajarvi but the going was tough as his 350 men faced 14 000 Red Army troops. The Ninth Army receiving new orders for the 163rd and 44 Rifle Divisions to attack simultaneously on the 22nd December, but this was postponed to the 24th. That was to allow the 9th Army commander Duhanov to be replaced by the highly successful Vasily Chuikov. For this phase of the attack, the Soviets wanted to send in reinforcements to Suomussalmi which they continued to hold despite Finnish attempts to drive them from this town based in the central eastern side of the waist, on the main road to Oulu. The Soviet Stavka had taken over direct control of the war, it was going so badly, and they wanted to send mobile forces down the road to bolster the two infantry regiments, divisional artillery and the HQ in Suomussalmi. This was going to be a challenge, the Finns managed the cut the road along a five kilometer section. So the Stavka used a new tactic, to bypass this cut off portion, to outflank the Finns in other words. If you stand in the town of Suomussalmi and stare out direct north, you're looking out across one of these quite vast lakes, out towards the Hulkonniemi peninsular opposite, more than a kilometer away across the Niskanselka portion of the lake. o the Soviet battalion that detached from the 44th Rifle Division was forced to circle Finnish positions along a 200 kilometre route through the Lonkka-Palovaara territory, and this was a safe route, albeit a long march. Intelligence reports indicated that the Russians were arriving in force and the Finns attack on Suomussalmi was delayed to the 26th December when sections of the Sixth bicycle battalion struck Russian logistics columns near kylanmaki. Despite desperate attempts, the bicycle battalion failed to overrun the Russian positions. Things went better for the rest of the battalion hit a Red Army motorised column at the village of Kakimaki, causing chaos. The Russian troops abandoned their trucks and escaped across the frozen landscape back into to Soviet Union. Let's take a look at what was happening near the Arctic sea, far to the north. There the Soviet Fourteenth Army led by Commander Valerian Frolov was trying to seize Finland's only Arctic port, Petsamo. The Finnish high command had split their forces here — one was under Major General Marrti Wallenius, and called the Lapland Group. Wallenius faced a grim situation, and Mannerheim had not expected his forces in the north to survive long. He was going to be surprised, because the Lapland Group had managed to hold off the Fourteenth Army mainly because Frolov had decided to use only one third of his forces in the initial attack, the 52nd Rifle Division. Last we heard how the Russian Stavka had taken control of the war directly after a number of mishaps, the Finns had managed to stymie the mighty Red Army which launched its invasion without warning on November 30th. 120 000 Russian soldiers backed up by 1500 artillery pieces, 1400 tanks and about 1000 planes had initially launched part of the invasion along the Karelian Isthmus - this was the Soviet Seventh Army. The Finnish forces facing them were tiny by comparison, almost ten percent of the size, 26 000 infantry, 71 artillery pieces and no tanks. Helsinki couldn't call on an air force, they had virtually no planes. The Russian Seventh Army led by Vladimir Grendahl was tasked with seizing the Karelian isthmus, targeting both the east up against Lake Ladoga and the west, via Viipuri along the Baltic Coast. As you heard previously, the Eastern sector had been a nightmare, with the Russians held up at Taipale — the Finnish artillery in particular had scored many hits on the Red Army moving across open land, and as they tried to cross the Taipale River. AFter the setbacks, the Stavka increased the size of the infantry to 250 000, added another 300 artillery pieces and tanks and air support was bolstered. The Russians shifted their attention on the Isthmus back to the western edge, towards Viipuri. The Finnish Army Second Corps comprised of the 1st, 4th, 5th and 11th Divisions were here, fighting stoically against the invasion, but were short of reinforcements. At Summa, Colonel Selim Isakson's 5th Division awaited the Russians, to their left was the 1st Division led by Laaitikainen, and on their left, Colonel Koskimies 11th Division. Orders were sent by Carl Gustaf Mannerheim on 5th December to hold the ground at all costs. The Finnish high command also issued a statement on how to defeat the dreaded Russian tanks. “… if the enemy tanks at times manage to break through our lines, our troops must hold their ground and calmly destroy the infantry following in the wake of their armour…” One of the main Soviet objectives was to hit the 12 kilometer area between Summa village and a large lake called Muolaanjarvi. The Russians were going to strike this area repeatedly, and were repeatedly repulsed until the end of December. But its time to cast our gaze further north, to the Battle for Suomussalmi which was going to become the symbol of Finnish resistance in the coming weeks. This town of roughly 4000 people lies in the central region of Finland, in the east of what was called the waist of the country, the narrowest part, on the eastern side close to the Russian border. Suomussalmi was a provincial centre, the town was made up mostly of loggers and hunters although seasonal fishing was also part of its economy. The Russian plan was to take the town, then drive directly west, thus splitting the country in two as they focused on the Baltic harbour town of Oulu. Suomussalmi region characterised by long twisty lakes that radiate outwards from the road junction. At 8am on the 30th November the Soviet 163rd Rifle Division led by Brigade Commander Andrew Zelentsov launched an attack the village of Lonkka just over the border. Zelentsov's strategy was to attempt to take Suomussalmi from two directions - a two pronged attack and at first his forces managed to advance 15 kilometers. It's safe the say that the Finns were startled that their enemy had bothered to attack this area at all, even more so that they'd arrived in force. The individual motti's received many names used during the battles - mainly in an attempt at deceiving Soviet intelligence - but in time, they all received an "official" name, usually according to the nearest town or village. Tactically, it went like this. A combat team was sent to an assembly area just out of reach of the Red Army reconnaissance patrols while Finnish scouts reccied the best concealed routes to the road from these assembly areas. In the only letter he is allowed to send home, he prays, “I hope the day soon dawns that we again may meet.” But after months of dark nights and even darker days, how long can his hope survive? Liisa Kovala's book Surviving Stutthof: My Father's Ordeal in a Nazi Concentration Camp (Latitude 46, 2017) is a tale of survival, hope, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit. Today's conversation and guest are unlike one you have ever heard on our show before and I am not just talking about the who, what, and where of the story (all of which are great!) but really understanding what “a good place to live is a good place to visit” means to a destination few of us have been. Something I know our guest hopes to change for us all!  Oulu, Finland is having a moment, and not just against the backdrop of the world which includes sharing a border with Russia, being recently accepted in NATO, or even a brand-new Prime minister, all of which we will discuss. But we're talking about how Oulu is pushing sustainability, happiness, and warmth to its residents and visitors alike.  Please welcome to the show, Yrjötapio ”Y.t.” Kivisaari from Visit Oulu Visit Oulu, Finland Destinations International The Architects of Destination Advocacy Podcast is a part of the Destination Marketing Podcast Network. Delightfully Southern Devotionals

Have you ever self inflicted yourself with suffering? Have you ever Oulu there'd or been volunteered for something you didn't want to do? If you answered yes, then this is for you. We will be discussing how God will even help us with any situation whether self inflicted or otherwise. I hope this blesses you as much as it has me. ☺️ Below is a backstory on how this all got started if you're interested. I started this channel by reading from the little book “I've got to talk to somebody, God” a woman's conversations with God by Marjorie Holmes. It has been such a blessing. I didn't know what direction the Lord would take this channel after we finished that book. In true form, God has provided. He put it on a faithful supporter heart to purchase and to send me another book by Marjorie Holmes titled “Hold me up a little longer, Lord”. I know God is going to use this book to minister to us and bless us. Thank you for being here! I hope this blesses you. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

Today I am very excited to introduce you to Agnis Stibe, a 4x TEDx speaker, MIT alum, YouTube creator, globally recognized corporate consultant, and scientific advisor. He is the Artificial Intelligence Program Director and Professor of Transformation at EM Normandie Business School, and the creator of the STIBE Method, which we will of course talk about in today's episode. He is also the Adjunct Professor of Human-City Interaction at the University of Oulu, Paris Lead of Silicon Valley founded Transformative Technology community.  While at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he established research on persuasive cities for sustainable wellbeing. We talk about his research, how social proof can change behavior when it is made more visible, the importance of testing, why you need to try different approaches for any concept, and so much more. Listen in! Show Notes: [00:43] Today I am very excited to introduce you to Dr. Agnis Stibe, a 4x TEDx speaker, MIT alum, YouTube creator, globally recognized corporate consultant, and scientific advisor. [03:19] Agnis shares about himself, his background, and the really fascinating work he does. He is passionate about helping people, teams, organizations, and societies to get where they want to get.  [04:17] It is our counterproductive psychology that is oftentimes our roadblock to our own success and happiness.  [07:22] Awareness is number one. Once awareness is there, then there has to be a degree of willingness.  [09:33] Not everything is worth coming up the “Slope of Enlightenment.”  [10:23] We have access to the same curiosity throughout our lives. The question is do we allow ourselves to be using it? [12:31] He encourages people to take away unnecessary bias before they start a conversation about AI. [14:13] Together we are on a journey and the only obstacles are our human biases. [15:32] Agnis shares some success stories.  [17:15] After five meetings using their transparent system, everyone was on time.  [18:18] Melina's second book What Your Employees Need and Can't Tell You comes out in October 2022.   [20:11] Many people don't want to see themselves in comparison with others on the same screen, but that is their resistance speaking.   [22:02] Technology takes away the bias. It is a more reliable perspective that it makes existing patterns more transparent and visible.  [23:51] Agnis shares about The Littery and his role with it.  [26:32] They amplified the effects of that solution by adding a social layer. Technology also played a role in making things more transparent.  [28:28] Humans over our evolution have gained a lot and we have lost some essential awareness of who we are.  [30:42] Thanks to technology we get a deeper and clearer perspective of who we are.  [33:19] Technology has huge impacts. There is bias towards technology.  [34:34] Agnis' hypothesis: technology is perceived by an average human being the same way an average human being perceives another human being. [36:28] Everything we experience with technology is giving us an opportunity to look at ourselves - the more technology the closer and deeper we see ourselves.   [38:24] The STIBE Method has ten tools split among three major stages. [39:55] Most of the time the problem with failed solutions is that there is not enough awareness of the problem.  [41:33] The final and crucial phase is to make assurance for long-term success. [45:33] Melina shares her closing thoughts.  [45:45] The impact of social proof can change when it is made more visible and there is a record. [50:04] Thank you again to everyone who has subscribed, rated, and left those five-star reviews of the podcast. I appreciate you and please keep them coming. Thanks for listening.
