“The part I also really love is finding the edges: How do we pursue the elite edge of world-class performance? I think as I've gotten further, that part is exciting me more and more as we go on here. But it doesn't have to just be world- class – how do you get people to find out how good they can really be?”When Chris Miltenberg took the helm at North Carolina in 2019, the Tar Heels distance programs had not won an ACC cross country title since before most of his current athletes were born. Fast forward to today and under Miltenberg's leadership, UNC has not only climbed back to the top of the ACC podium in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track, but they've reestablished themselves as a legitimate national contender too.Miltenberg has led UNC to top ten finishes at the NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships, he's coached Parker Wolfe to UNC's first-ever 5000m outdoor national title, signed the program's highest ranked recruiting class, and has built a culture of buy-in, belief, and bold ambition. Most recently, he's coming off an indoor season where Ethan Strand broke the collegiate records in the 3000m and mile before taking the NCAA title. Makayla Paige won the women's 800m to become the Tar Heels' first women's NCAA champion since 2018.But this isn't just a North Carolina story; Miltenberg's impact has been felt at every stop. At Stanford, he led the Cardinals to a top five program of the year finish and coached national champions like Grant Fisher, Sean McGorty, and Elise Cranny. At Georgetown, he guided the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country title with the team that was led by Emily Infeld. In today's conversation, we talk about how he's building something sustainable in Chapel Hill, his approach to culture, and what it takes to coach through transitions, setbacks, and expectations. We also dig into athlete development, milestone moments, and why being present is one of the most underrated skills a coach can have.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris Miltenberg | @chris.miltenberg on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. He advocates for early specialization and skill mastery, particularly for those aiming to play in top European leagues. Additionally, Ryan underscores the value of maintaining involvement in multi-sport activities and ensuring a managed exit for players who do not make it professionally.12:44Community Sport and Athlete Development StrategiesDes Ryan explained the differences between community sport and elite athlete development, advocating for a framework that supports participation at all levels. He shared insights from his experience in Irish rugby and English football, stressing the importance of mastering fundamental skills before early specialization. Michael Wright contributed by discussing the challenges of balancing early specialization with the development of well-rounded athletes.21:49Athletic Development and Training Philosophy in FootballDes Ryan shared insights on athletic development within football academies, stressing that each academy has unique needs. He advocated for a balanced approach that combines fundamental skill training with game-specific drills, while also addressing the importance of physical conditioning. Michael Wright contributed by discussing the psychological benefits of challenging training sessions, suggesting that some fitness outcomes should be pursued separately from skill practices.34:56Key Learnings in Youth Development ProgramsDes Ryan outlined a framework for youth development that includes four stages of understanding, from initial ignorance to full integration of knowledge. He stressed the importance of modifying training sessions based on players' growth and development, advocating for a holistic approach that considers physical, technical, tactical, and psychological factors. Ryan also noted the need to address biases towards early developers in talent identification.41:43Understanding Adolescent Development in Sports TrainingMichael Wright raises concerns about identifying potential in young athletes as they navigate growth spurts and physical awkwardness. Des Ryan responds by stressing the significance of biological maturation in assessments, noting that traditional metrics can misrepresent a player's abilities. He points out that understanding a player's development requires patience and careful observation.48:36Insights on Athletic DevelopmentDes Ryan shared his aspirations for how he would like to be perceived by his colleagues, emphasizing qualities such as fairness, collaboration, and leadership. Michael Wright acknowledged the valuable insights provided during the discussion on athletic development programs. Both expressed appreciation for the engaging dialogue and the thought-provoking questions posed.54:33Discussion on Training Fundamentals and Coaching ApproachesDes Ryan criticized the current trend of prioritizing isometric exercises over essential movements such as squats and lunges, arguing that this shift has led to a loss of foundational training. He emphasized that while advanced techniques can be beneficial, they should not replace the core fundamentals that players need. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What to listen for:“If I cannot, in five repetitions, isolate a variable down and get it where I want it, I do need to stop. That doesn't mean the next time we'll be successful. What that tells me is, don't do the same thing again and again and again. And there's been a lot of variation. Isolate that variable. It looks good now. Put it back in a chain, it doesn't look good. What have I done wrong?”In part one of this two-part discussion, Robin Greubel and Crystal Wing sit down with special guest Denise Fenzi, a trainer and educator who specializes in building cooperation, joy, and extreme precision in competition dog sports teams.“Patterns lead to confidence. Unpredictable leads to listening.”Famous for breaking down complex concepts into bite-sized lessons, Denise does a deep dive into a training philosophy that stresses adaptability and prioritizing the dog's wellbeing. She discusses how to build your dog's vocabulary via strategic repetition, as well as her approach to encouraging or disrupting behavioral patterns during training.“The more ways you generalize the behavior, the better the dog gets at those behaviors.”Denise shares why tools like choke chains and e-collars might be a thing of the past, and why tailored, humane options like aversives better enhance understanding and cooperation between you and your dog–which in turn fosters a bond built on trust and respect rather than pain and fear.“A behavior chain is simply a bunch of behaviors strung together, so you have to get comfortable with degrees of messiness.”Finally, Denise unravels the complexities of behavior chains and the balance between instinctual behaviors and structured learning. The tables get turned on this episode and Jason is interviewed by last week's guest, Phil Batterson! This episode was initially recorded for the Critical Oxygen Podcast. Our conversation takes a broader look at the "why" behind our training philosophies. Here are some of the topics our conversation covers: Jason Fitzgerald's background in running and coaching The importance of maximizing consistency Why optimization is going to be different for each athlete Distinguishing between utilization and capacity training Why Jason considers himself “a developmental coach” How running teaches values that are universally applicable The evolution of Jason's strength training philosophy Training philosophy is a passion for us both, and our discussion will help give you a behind the scenes look at how I approach coaching for runners of all levels. Links & Resources from the Show: Work with me! Check out the Critical Oxygen podcast and blog Listen to last week's episode with Phil Follow Phil on Instagram Thank you DrinkLMNT! A big thanks to DrinkLMNT for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They are offering a free gift with your purchase at DrinkLMNT. And this does NOT have to be your first purchase. You'll get a sample pack with every flavor so you can try them all before deciding what you like best. DrinkLMNT's products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt, but citrus salt is also a banger. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. So check out DrinkLMNT to try their new flavor or get a free sampler pack. Thank You Previnex! After resisting most supplements for the better part of my life, I'm cautiously changing my tune. I'm now a Masters runner and in my personal life, I'm optimizing for longevity. I want to be my healthiest self for as long as possible and I'm excited to partner with Previnex to make that happen. For every purchase you make, they also donate vitamins to kids in need. Their new Muscle Health Plus is something I'm now taking. Turning 40 - and having a thin frame - has made me realize that I need to prioritize lean muscle mass to stay healthy and age well. Muscle Health Plus has creatine, essential and branched chain amino acids, and it's designed in a way to maximize protein synthesis and the absorption of amino acids. With clincially proven ingredients, I hope you'll try it. Use code jason15 for 15% off your order at Previnex!
