THE ART DIRECTOR'S ART DIRECTOR—Janet Froelich is one of the most influential and groundbreaking creative directors of all time. For over two decades, she lead the creative teams at The New York Times Magazine and its sister publication, T: The New York Times Style Magazine. In this episode, Froelich recalls her own personal 9/11 story, and what is was like to be in the newsroom on that awful day, as well as how she helped create the magazine cover that inspired and informed the memorial to the Twin Towers and those who lost their lives there. She talks about other Times magazine covers that left a mark, about her early years as an artist living in SoHo and hanging out at Max's Kansas City, and why you should never be afraid to hire people better than you. THE FINE ART OF MAGAZINE MAKING— Imagine this: You're a 42-year-old designer who's only worked at one magazine. Ever. Then one day, unexpectedly, you're tasked to lead the design of that magazine. Now imagine that the magazine is universally lauded as a design masterpiece. Add to that, your immediate predecessors have both been enshrined into every hall of fame across the design and media universe. Heard enough? Well now throw into this mix that your job is only an interim post. Why? Because just as your boss was leaving, his boss was out the door, too. That's right, now you've got to navigate all of … this … while the company is searching for your new boss. And whatever you did that got you a shot at this opportunity the first time? You're gonna have to do it all again. And likely for an editor who's been tasked with coming in and shaking things up a bit.“I'm fucked,” you might think. But you're not Gail Bichler. As you already know, Bichler survived the turmoil that started her tenure at The New York Times Magazine. And the astonishing thing—well, astonishing until you know more—is that Bichler has not only maintained the exalted design standards, she has pushed even further.“Her magazine looks different from Rem [Duplessis]'s, as Rem's did from mine. She's pushed the envelope in dramatically new directions,” says her legendary predecessor—and the woman who discovered Bichler—Janet Froelich. Why? Because Bichler is an artist. And, as Froelich states, “she chooses to work with people who work the way artists work. She's firmly committed to ideas and, most importantly, to journalism.”“What elevates her as a leader is the discipline, structure, and consistency she brings,” says Arem Duplessis, whose departure for Apple created the opportunity for Bichler to move up. “Gail has always been so reverential to the Times' legacy—and she fiercely protects that.”—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Lane Press. After years of rumors and speculation, Governor Jared Polis and some of the leading Democrats in the statehouse put forth a serious proposal a couple of weeks ago to reform the Denver metro area's public transit operator, RTD. It turns out that many Denverites agree that RTD could be better, but no one agrees on how to fix it! So producer Paul Karolyi is sitting down with one of the primary sponsors of the big RTD reform bill, Rep. Meg Froelich of Englewood, to talk about why the initial proposal flopped, what Polis and his allies are thinking now, and where the calls for reform go from here. Rep. Froelich mentioned the bill to eliminate parking minimums in new development projects. When we last talked about that proposal on the podcast, our guest Dr. Ken Schroeppel said we could go even further. Today's guest is Keara Burke. She and her husband Rory are blessed with five beautiful children. In January 2019, following her twenty-week checkup, their unborn son, Baby Rory, was diagnosed with Trisomy 18- a life-limiting condition. We were offered the option of termination. That wasn't an option for us, so we decided to carry him to term and care for our sick son no matter the length of his life. We wanted Baby Rory to write his own story and allow his life to unfold as designed. Baby Rory was born June 12, 2019, and lived on earth for five precious days. We were able to meet him, spend time with him, and bring him home with us. His four sisters were able to hold him, give him his first bath and make many memories with their beloved brother until his gentle and natural death. There are options in caring for your son and daughter during this difficult and heartbreaking illness that bless the family. For more information : https://rorysway.org https://ststanschurch.org

Did you know that Kayden's Law passed in Colorado? Kayden's Law is one step needed to keep children safe as families go through our family court system. If you are a survivor of domestic violence or narcissistic abuse and you share children with your abuser, it is likely that you will find yourself in a family court battle when you leave. Our family court system needs significant reform in order to put the interest of children at the forefront to protect them from abusive and narcissistic parents. On this episode I have a conversation with Colorado Representative Meg Froelich, one of the sponsors of Kayden's law about the incremental changes that are happening and that still need to happen to reform our family court system. We break down what Kayden's Law requires of court professionals with regard to training, who can be considered an expert in these cases, and how it prevents reunification camps that are harmful to children. We look at the views of the opposition and other challenges to having bills like this passed, with the hope of more states being able to gain some traction and pass similar legislation in their states.Representative Meg Froelich is in her third term in the Colorado House of Representatives and serves as the, Chair of the Transportation, Housing and Local Governments Committee and sits on the Energy and Environment Committee. Rep. Froelich has a passion for recruiting, supporting, and training women who run for office which has informed her extensive work on protecting women and children. She was the prime sponsor of the Reproductive Health Equity Act, (2022), which preserved the fundamental right to access the full range of reproductive healthcare in Colorado and the Protections for Reproductive Healthcare Access, (2023), which ensured protections for providers and reproductive and gender affirming healthcare access. She has promoted the rights and protections for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors with recent bills, Julie's Law, (2021), and the recently signed Kayden's Law, (2023), and the Forensic Medical Evidence Process Improvements, (2023), which will provide funding for additional access to services for victims of sexual assault As a former teacher and parent to three Littleton Public School graduates, Froelich has helped to increase K12 education funding, recalibrate our teachCome join us, and others like you, for a mini retreat in Golden, Colorado on Thursday, October 5, 2023. In a critical development that shook Brown County, a jury on Wednesday found Taylor Schabusiness, a 25-year-old woman, guilty of the chilling charges of homicide, third-degree sexual abuse, and mutilating a corpse. The victim was her former boyfriend, 24-year-old Shad Thyrion, in an incident that took place in February 2022. After an intense day of final statements and evidence review, the jury began its deliberations at approximately 4:50 p.m. A short fifty minutes later, the twelve jurors, who had been tasked with making this crucial decision, returned to the courtroom. Their verdict: Taylor Schabusiness was to be held accountable for her horrifying actions. This decision was promptly followed by the accused's exit from the courtroom, escorted out by bailiffs in handcuffs. Schabusiness was initially arrested in February 2022 when law enforcement was called to an address on Stony Brook Lane in Green Bay. Thyrion's mother made a grim discovery that day: she found her son's severed head in a bucket in the house's basement. In the aftermath of this gruesome discovery, Schabusiness was subsequently charged with Thyrion's murder and the horrific act of dismemberment. Brown County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Walsh has asked the jury to return to the courtroom by 9:15 a.m. the following Thursday. The next phase of the trial is set to examine whether Schabusiness could be deemed not guilty due to mental disease or defect. This plea was entered on her behalf by her former attorney, Quinn Jolly, in September. Jolly represented Schabusiness until an incident in February, when she assaulted him during a hearing. During their closing arguments on Wednesday, prosecutors Caleb Saunders and David Lasee presented a straightforward case to the jury. Lasee, the Brown County district attorney, stated emphatically, "This is bizarre. This is strange. This is unnatural, but in no way is it unclear," reinforcing that Schabusiness was the cause of Thyrion's demise. Supporting Lasee's assertions, Saunders, an assistant district attorney, reiterated the central truth of the case, "What the defendant did to Shad Thyrion." However, defense attorney Christopher Froelich proposed a different perspective. In his opinion, the evidence painted an unclear, confusing picture. "This case is a puzzling, unclear collection of facts," Froelich commented, highlighting the difficulty in ascertaining Schabusiness's intent or whether Thyrion's death was accidental. The jury, composed of nine women and seven men, underwent an intense selection process. As deliberations commenced, four jurors were marked as alternates to ensure a thorough and impartial verdict. As the world awaits the next phase of this disturbing trial, it is evident that the case of Taylor Schabusiness continues to captivate public interest, presenting a complex narrative of brutality, law, and potential mental health considerations. The upcoming proceedings will be closely watched and reported as the saga unfolds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
