We hear it all of the time - how important it is to love yourself. This is rule #1 when building (or rebuilding) self-esteem. But to "agape" love yourself is so much more. It's a deeper love. It's the love Jesus has for us and that's a powerful love. In this episode, we talk about how to truly "agape" love ourselves the way Jesus loves us. Our guest, Amy Connell, guides us through the importance of this practice and how to integrate this level of love into our everyday lives. I hear you. I truly do. Food and eating and qualities and what and when and all the things are challenging, confusing and sometimes contradicting. There are a lot of voices out there. And then, layering on another element is the emotions we have surrounding our food. Sometimes that can lead to guilt and shame, sometimes those can actually bring a smile to our face, and of course there's several layers in between. Today's guest, dietician Sallyanne Pisk is here in the most gentle way to help us navigate those emotions. I just feel my shoulders relaxing when I speak with her and appreciate her tender ways of bringing awareness to emotions associated with eating as well as what to do about that.We discuss:Knowing yourself, knowing what nourishes you, and knowing how to deal with changeEmotional eating and what that fully is (it's not just crying in the pantry eating Oreos)The question to ask yourself as a starting point when eatingThe multiple drivers for eatingThe concept of “it's all my fault” and how it's notHow lack of judgment, curiosity, and being open to self compassion can help your relationship with foodThe power of eating without interactionWhat to do when the thought of giving up the food rules seems scaryThe importance of being curious about why we think about food the way we do Defining what food enjoyment means too muchGet your eating checklist here.Connect with Sallyanne:https://eatingforyou.com.au/Instagram: eatingforyou.auConnect with Amy:GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook!Instagram: @GracedHealthFacebook: @Graced HealthAmy.connell@gracedhealth.comClick here to leave a review…simply!Your Worthy Body: Find Freedom in Health by Breaking All the Rules

Get ready for the most laughs you have ever encountered in a conversation about pelvic floor health. And if you think you just need to do kegels to strengthen your pelvic floor, you definitely need to keep listening. Also - did you know your back and hip pain may be due to your pelvic floor? Many women experience tightness and discomfort in their back, groin, and hips after childbirth. Seeking help, they turn to their doctor - only to be told it is a mild case of some orthopedic issue or that their x-rays look good. But then, the pain continues to worsen, forcing women to continue to modify their habits to accommodate the pain. Their pelvic floor and core continue to get weaker, and pain prevents these women from exercising, enjoying intimacy, and living their fullest life. And, even though you may be in your 40s, 50s or beyond, you may still be experiencing the side effects from this.Jenn Lormand and Christina Walsh join the show today to get real about pelvic floor health, and nothing is off limits in this conversation! Jenn Lormand is an Exercise Physiologist, Author, and mom of three living and thriving with Stage 2 prolapse. Christina Walsh is a Physical Therapist specializing in Integrative Manual Therapy and mom of two living with a rectocele. They have a combined 36 years of professional experience and have helped thousands of women stop peeing their pants, ditch back pain, & have better sex. They are published medical researchers in the Journal of Women's Health Physical Therapy, where they proved that women can heal without kegels or inserting anything into their “nether-regions.” We discuss:What a “tinkler” is (you can probably guess)What is entailed with manual therapy (spoiler alert it's all external!)Why your back and hip pain may be related to your pelvic floor healthHow do you know if you're suffering from overtraining, core dysfunction, or other issues. Why the discomfort and issues may still be with you even if your “baby” is in their teensIssues you may need to pay attention to that are indicators of a weak center of gravityWhy kegels are an outdated way of strengthening our pelvic floorThe added benefits of strengthening your pelvic floor health: intimacy and not waking up in the middle night to peeEnroll in the signature Tighten Your Tinkler ProgramConnect with Jenn and Christina:www.tightenyourtinkler.comInstagram: @tighten.your.tinklerFacebook: Tighten Your TinklerConnect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! I've had a lot of conversations with other moms who struggle with providing quality meals to picky eaters. Plus, let's face it: as our kids get older, they want more control of everything. This is normal as they grow; my challenge is giving them the chance to have control while still offering foods that will make my teen athletes fuel and perform well. After all, the precooked chicken flatbread sandwiches and taquitos in my freezer are well within their scope of making, but due to the salt content and high processed foods, it's not something I want them grabbing on the daily. Plus, they are athletes and it's important to me they are well fueled so they can feel and perform their best.Today offer you some of the meals I provide my family that fit this bill.Listen in to hear my five meal suggestions to give your people control.Click here for a list of suggestions for Stuffed Sweet Potatoes. What kinds of things run through your head when you eat? Are you counting calories? Telling yourself you're having good or bad food? Rewarding a good day or punishing a bad? Or maybe it's a special meal we are enjoying with a loved one. We have all kinds of food noise running through our head. If you aren't familiar with the term food noise or are familiar with a food story, then you are going to feel so enlightened today.Elise Museles joins us today to break down all this and more.We discuss:How the term “food story” came to beHow her father's medical need to lock the refrigerator at night shaped her relationship with foodWhat “food noise” isThe simple thing to do before you eat to reduce food noiseWhat happens when we sit down to eat while stressedThe importance of noticing (but not judging) your thoughts before eatingChanging “eat and” to “just eat”Elise is the author of Food Story: Rewrite the way you eat, think and live. I've shared before that when I began this podcast, I intended to have a faith-filled, grace-based focus on our eating and movement. That was it. Honestly that's all I knew. But as the saying goes, I didn't know what I didn't know. As this show has progressed and I've had extended conversations with counselors, faith leaders, and more, I realized our mind and emotions are so intricately connected to the rest of our body and these impact our eating and movement. My conversation with Elisabeth Kristof takes this to an elevated understanding that is simply fascinating. If you are a 1.5 speed listener you may want to take that down because Elisabeth brings so much knowledge about the nervous system, our stress response, and our body's signals. We discussThere is only so much you can do in your workouts without looking at the operating system and the areas of the brainWhy tight hip flexors may not be just soreness or tightness, rather it's a function of your brain not feeling safeThe plasticity of our nervous system by intentionally training our nervous system The integration of cognitive therapy and understanding how our nervous system and body respond to itThe power of using new tools to move emotions through our body “Old brain” and “new brain”What dysregulation isWays our body may be protecting us from dysregulation that we may not expectThe vagus nerve and how it's the pathway to the brain of what is going on inside our bodyThe :30 way to reconnect with the signals of your bodyHow and why belly breathing is so impactful in regulating yourselfClick here for more information on the ACE studyConnect with Elisabeth:https://brainbased-wellness.com/Instagram: @elkristof Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! I thrive in having schedules, projects, and plans. These bring me a strange sense of peace. I know if I am checking off the items associated with those then I am achieving my goals. But I also know that schedules, projects, and plans go awry. That's why I have found it helpful to have a back-up plan. Or, as a mentor of mine says, being kind to My Future Self. This can come in all fashions like preparing coffee the night before or filling up my car with gasoline on my way home so I don't have to do it on my way out when I am inevitably in a rush. Why I can't leave the house 45 seconds earlier is beyond me but I feel like I am always cutting it close to the wire.As I think about what the coming year looks like, I know I feel the greatest sense of peace when I don't have unexpected setbacks. I don't deal with interruptions well ( just ask my family when I am trying to write) and I can easily become discombobulated when something goes off schedule. That's why I take a little extra time to be kind to My Future Self. Todays episode offers five ways to consider being kind to your future self as well.Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! It's that time of year again. Last week while en route from my home in Houston to visit a friend in Phoenix, I reset my calendar. Truthfully, I do this 3 times a year: at the beginning of the school year, at the beginning of Summer, and of course at the beginning of the calendar year. There's always a bit of excitement for me during this time. What do I want my days to look like? What do I want my workouts to look like? And of course, when can I pick up my groceries (bless you curbside pickup)?Even as I plan my days, weeks, and months, I know not everything is going to play out like I hope it will. Before jumping headfirst into a new program or plan, consider some of these questions I ask myself. Consider doing the same for yourself. It will help keep you focused and allow for plenty of grace depending on how you're feeling.Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! I don't know if you got the memo on this, but parenting is tricky. And hard. And particularly difficult as it relates to our children and their body size. If you've been with me for any amount of time you know I'm a big believer in taking care of our body so we can do what we are called to do, not so it will look a certain way. But there are times we witness our children's body size changing and are not sure what to do about it.Because I don't feel I'm qualified to answer this, I brought in licensed professional counselor Michelle Nietert to discuss this.We discuss:The impact of flippant words and phrasesHelpful vs. (unintentionally) hurtful wordsThe importance of using medical professionals to help with weight When it's time to weave mental health intervention with body healthWhy involving another party outside of the family can be helpfulWhy we shouldn't “do this together”Links Mentioned:Loved and Cherished: 100 Devotions for GirlsLovedAndCherished.meGraced Health Podcast with Brittany Braswell: How do I know if my loved one has an eating disorder? What is "highly palatable?" After a 176 episodes of the Graced Health podcast, I thought it might be worth formally identifying the values of this podcast and sharing them with you. These values are something I've discovered as I've stumbled through this podcasting experience rather than identified from the beginning. But once I wrote them down, I realized I go back to them when making decisions about content or opportunities beyond that. I invite you to learn more and listen in. When you're done, if these sound appealing to you, you're in the right spot. And if you're kicking the tires on some of these, you're still in the right spot. Sometimes God puts just the right person in your life at just the right time. I have several friends who fit into this category, including my friend Camisha Broussard. We have spent hours on the sidewalks of our neighborhood. The first time out we discussed politics, capitalism, health, body image...you know, we kept it light. Camisha is a mother to four great boys, a wife to a great Ironman, a professor for the greatest community college in Houston, and she's working on being a great writer and amateur pizza maker. Camisha is also Black, and has played an integral part in my own awareness and education of the experience of Black America.Because cross-cultural body image is something I've been exploring for a while, I asked Camisha how she'd feel about coming on the show and having a conversation with me. Not all of my community is white, but I know a lot of you are, and I thought you might find her experience as a Black woman in America as interesting as I did. We discuss:The general “ideal” body for Black womenThe disconnect between health and body How receiving and giving love through food can run counter to healthy livingThe impact of formal education with regard to her food choicesThe aha moment I had relating to Camisha's experience of learning moreThe other attributes that are important to Black women“Big Mama” and what she representsAnd some bonus wisdom about marriage that applies to everyone Connect with Camishawww.MishasThyme.comInstagram: @MishasThymeFacebook: Mishas ThymeTwitter: @MishasThymeYouTube: MishasThymeReceive an early recipe release of Your Worthy Body Click here to leave a review…simply!Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! Do you know the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating? I didn't but learned that I probably would have been classified under disordered eating several years ago. If you've listened to episode 2 of this podcast, you may recognize some of the symptoms my guest, Brittany Braswell, describes. Brittany is a Registered Dietitian and recovery coach who helps women struggling with disordered eating and negative body image reduce their anxiety and disordered behaviors so that they can confidently restore their health and ditch food rules forever. Brittany emphasizes the importance of replacing negative beliefs with spiritual truth to help her clients discover their God-given identity without their eating disorder. She runs a virtual private practice with one-to-one services and group coaching programs to help women achieve lasting freedom from the bondage of their disorders. This is an important conversation, particularly as it relates to our adolescent children, but I promise you'll receive several nuggets of wisdom that are applicable to anyone. We discuss:Difference between eating disorder and disordered eatingThe importance of not labeling someone based on the diagnosisRed flags that might indicate disordered eating or an eating disorderThe language we use surrounding our food and how it impacts the people around usHow to support a loved one who suffers from an eating disorder or disordered eatingThe benefits of collaboration with other health care providersWhat a “weight-neutral” perspective isLinks mentioned:What four generations can teach us about grief and unexpected loss with Author Heidi PaulecConnect with Brittany:http://www.brittanybraswellrd.comInstagram: @brittanybraswellrdFacebook: Brittany Braswell, MS, RDN, LD (@brittanybraswellrd)Free Facebook community - Eating Disorder Recovery Support for Christian Women (www.facebook.com/groups/christianwomeninrecovery)Connect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! I've been very open about my body image struggles in the past, and truthfully still dip into that every now and then. The more I've learned about health, though, the more convinced I am that one of the reasons for my own and other's body image struggles is the miseducation about what healthy really is. It's something I addressed in my new book, Your Worthy Body that comes out in November, but I feel like I only scratched the surface. That's why I'm delighted to have Dr. Lisa Folden on the show today to discuss Health at Every Size. Yes, that's a thing, and it's real. Dr. Lisa is a licensed physical therapist, behavior change specialist and mom-focused health & wellness coach. As a body positive women's health expert, health at every size (HAES) ambassador, private practice owner and mom of three, Dr. Lisa understands the complex needs of the modern busy woman. Therefore, she considers helping busy moms find their ‘healthy' as one of her of top priorities. We discuss:What health at every size (HAES) isSome of the science supporting HAESWhy it's particularly important for moms to not focus on the size of their bodyThe language shift we can make with regard to clothesHer response to the statement, “are we just promoting obesity in athletic campaigns?”Some “fat phobic” comments to avoid and how to reframe themApplicable ways to check our bias and turn our thinking aroundLinks and resources mentioned:Health at Every Size by Dr. BaconMirna Valerio: @themirnavatorConnect with Dr. Lisa:https://www.healthyphit.com/Instagram: @HealthyPhitFacebook: @HealthyPhitTwitter: @HealthyPhitPTYouTubeConnect with Amy: GracedHealth.comJoin the Graced Health community on Facebook! I do not consider myself to be interested in makeup. For me, it's a means to an end, and if you follow me on the socials you know I am not afraid of showing my face without makeup. But as my skin has aged I've found I appreciate the value it brings when I do want to look like I'm put together. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in caring for others that we don't make time to care for ourselves well. Amy Connell shares how God has helped her to redefine health and body image from His perspective. "I've heard one thing over and over from women: 'I'm so busy taking care of everybody else--my job, kids, husband. I'm doing the best that I can to take care of myself but I look around and I feel like what I'm doing is not enough.' My mission is helping you to find balance and freedom, to empower your body so you can take care of it and do the things God has called you to do." --Amy Connell Bio: Amy Connell is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and imperfect eater.
