In this episode of the Joyful Health Show Kasey Shuler talks with Amy Connell about breaking the generational chains of diet culture with our children. Amy is a weight-neutral personal trainer and nutrition coach. She is the author of two books and the podcast host of Graced Health for women over 40 and Lessons to My Teenage Self for young women. Amy is also a mom to 3. In this episode she shares from her personal experience as a mom and from her professional experience working with countless women to heal from diet culture. In this episode we discuss: The biggest challenge Christian moms face when it comes to raising the next generation to be free from diet culture The 4 stages of parenting and how we can support our children in each stage How to repair damage caused by words and attitudes we now regret We pray this episode blesses you no matter what season of parenthood you're in. Whether you're a yet-to-be parent, a new parent, a teen parent or a grandparent, it's never too late in Christ to break generational chains of diet culture. As Exodus 20:6 promises, we know that God will show his steadfast love to thousands of generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
In a world of body modification, dieting and extreme health practices, personal trainer Amy Connell's fitness approach is a holistic one. She encourages parents to talk to their teens about eating, exercise and empowered health. Specifically geared towards teenage girls, Amy's book " uses the concept of the C.O.R.E.: "C" stands for "calling", as we are called by God to do good things for Him. "O" stands for "original", as original, unique creations of God. "R" stands for "relationships", pressing into receiving the fullness of Christ through our relationship with God and our relationship with others. Amy emphasizes the value of relationships especially for Gen Z, who are currently experiencing a loneliness epidemic. "E" stands for "everything", encompassing ALL aspects of our life pertaining to our overall wellness. This entire philosophy is centered around worthiness; that our fearfully and wonderfully made bodies are worth treating with the utmost care and respect. Today Heather chats with Amy Connell about the ways we as moms who were fully entrenched in diet culture can start to change the conversations in our home around food and body. Amy and Heather were both fitness instructors and focused on “health education” trying to, out of love, do what was best for their kids around food and exercise. But, as they discuss today, some of what they did was likely unhelpful. As the research shows, some of the rules they enforced and the ways they modeled a restrictive relationship with food or over-emphasized exercise may have sent the wrong message to their kids. Amy and Heather talk about how our children and teens are on the journey with us out of diet culture, whether they know it or not. They talk about how tricky it can be to have our children watch our pendulum swing from restricting all the foods or maybe always being on a diet to giving up dieting and trying to eat more intuitively. They also discuss how our kids—both boys and girls--are being influenced by social media and YouTube influencers around what they should eat and how they should look or exercise. They talk about how to manage this challenge when you are trying to teach your children and teens a different way. Similarly, Amy and Heather talk about helping our children see the agenda that the culture has for them--and how diet culture plays into this agenda that wants them to be so focused on food, exercise, body, and appearance that they can miss out on what God has for them and find themselves in anxiety, depression, eating disorders or worse. Episode Summary: We all want to help. When we hear someone whose been given a devastating diagnosis, we want to try to help make things better. Or, at least make things less bad. But, sometimes, inadvertently, we can say and do things that cause more harm than good. Through my history with cancer and my husband's history with cancer, we've learned a few things. So in this replay of a conversation I had with Amy Connell, I'm going to share some insights that I think you'll find helpful so you can know how best to help a friend with cancer. This episode not only sheds light on the emotional and physical challenges of cancer but also on how friends can effectively and sensitively be a source of comfort and strength during such trying times. Quotables from the Episode: Keep your questions to a minimum. (It can be exhausting answering everybody's questions. It's even nicer to listen to an audio text or to read a prayer because I can hold on to that and pull it out again when I'm at a loss for words Don't just throw scripture at them. We want to have the right thing to say, and we want to do something to take their pain away, but we don't know what that is. So we fill it in with a Bible verse. Ask permission before giving advice. We want to help, but unsolicited advice can sometimes backfire. Consider tangible expressions of your support... something as simple as clean sheets can be deeply meaningful. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In a world bent on touting certain diets and restrictive eating, our guest, Amy Connell, desires we learn about our core strength. After releasing her book Your Worthy Body, written for women over 40, she had moms approach her saying “I need something like this for my daughters!” Her hope is to be a conduit between mom and daughter to help them both foster a healthy relationship with food, exercise and their body so they can grow in their relationship with each other. She does this through her new book Your Core Strength: A Christ-Centered, Diet-Culture-Free book for young women. Today we are going to be talking about How Your CORE Strength can bring freedom and empowerment in your health. Quotables from the episode: 91% of women report being unhappy with their bodies. Our C.O.R.E. strength refers to our calling, our originality and uniqueness, our relationships with others and with God, and everything that contributes to our holistic well-being in our health journey. Practically speaking, prioritize sleep. We can optimize and manage our overall mental and physical health when we have rested our brain and body. If you have children, model this for them. Spiritually speaking, I cling to 2 Corinthians 10:5: We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. If what I'm thinking isn't of God, then I follow the guidelines I offer in the book. Spot it, Lock it, Speak it. I have to notice the enemy's lies, lock them away and then speak God's truth. Scripture References: Romans 12:2 NIV Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Genesis 1:29 NIV I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. Genesis 9:3 NIV Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. We're back with another listener-submitted question from the community today! Amy Connell from the Graced Health Podcast submitted a question about editing her podcast in Descript. If you're unfamiliar with the platform, Descript is a tool that allows you to upload an audio or video file, and you can edit the transcript of the file like a document. When you delete an "um" or other filler words from the text, that part of the audio is stripped out too. In this episode, I'm sharing tips with Amy on editing her podcast in Descript and a few cautionary tales about over-editing an episode. It's great if you're thinking about trying Descript or want to know how the platform works! If you want to be featured in an upcoming segment called "Listener submitted questions," -- where I'll choose a sound bite to be featured on a new episode of The Proffitt Podcast, submit your audio clip here: https://podinbox.com/theproffittpodcast

Do you ever treat yourself like you aren't WORTHY of the sacrifice it takes to be healthy? (Not super thin or "a super model"... just, healthy?) Most of us don't if we're honest. In fact, many of us treat our bodies like they are here to carry our head around, or lug kids to soccer, or make dinner. But what if we realize we are meant to treat our body with love? Sacrificial, unconditional love? Well, that, my friends, would be a game changer. One full of grace and one that might just keep us motivated. Our guest today, nutrition and health trainer, Amy Connell, has been teaching women to do just that. To treat your body as if it's actually worthy. (She even wrote a book to share her passion with us!) And, in today's episode, we talk about that very thing (and so much more!)As Amy puts it, "Your eating, movement and body don't have to be perfect...you just need to be able to do what you're called to do". Treating your body rightly helps you complete your calling. Simmer on that... then push play and hear what Amy shares about what she has learned in her journey of struggling to accept health - not performance, not the world's "ideal". We hear it all of the time - how important it is to love yourself. This is rule #1 when building (or rebuilding) self-esteem. But to "agape" love yourself is so much more. It's a deeper love. It's the love Jesus has for us and that's a powerful love. In this episode, we talk about how to truly "agape" love ourselves the way Jesus loves us. Our guest, Amy Connell, guides us through the importance of this practice and how to integrate this level of love into our everyday lives. I met Amy at my Karate club and have witnessed her personal growth and achievements over the years and always been inspired by her grit and determination. I think you will be too! She earned her first Scottish National Team cap at 14 and has been following her passion with the sport around the world since. She started an online business at 18 to allow her to pursue her passion and build an income alongside travelling and competing as a self-funded Karate athlete. In 2015, she suffered a career threatening injury, with doctors saying she would not be able to compete again. Through two years of rehabilitation and persistence, she returned to competition going on to win British titles and a European medal. She uses this experience to help people going through tough times in their life and find the joy in every day. Most recently, she represented Team GB in contention for the Tokyo Olympics for 2020. Wearing the tracksuit and representing Great Britain, was something she could have only dreamed of as a little girl. Some key points from our interview:· How she believes that even the negative experiences in her life have been an opportunity for her to learn and grow from· How she's always striving to be a better athlete and person through fitness and personal development· How she recognises the importance of surrounding herself with positive people when she was injured and focusing on working on her mindset· How she had to allow herself time to be heartbroken when her hopes of competing in the Olympics didn't happen· How the discipline of being an athlete helped her to train both her body and her mind and feels she's much stronger now than before she was injured· How she hopes her story inspires others that despite experiencing hard times, there is a way out· How her practice of gratitude and looking for joy every day, helps her to remain positive "Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. "Is there a specific strategy for using a book and a podcast together?" What a fun topic! In today's episode, I'm sitting down with returning guest, Amy Connell, to talk about her recent experience of publishing her book and the role her podcast played in the process. Amy's sharing how she used her podcast network to help find endorsements for her new book, "Your Worthy Body". We're also talking about how her previous experience blogging contributed to both her podcast and book writing journey. "...there's something about the spoken word that can help connect you in a deeper way. You get the tone of the voice...the inflections. They get it when you are saying something really angrily or really softly. And that's a lot harder to do in the written word..." Amy's perspective on using both creative mediums together is worth a listen! This episode is for podcasters of all stages, but definitely for those of you that have the dream to one publish a book!"Why Growing Your Email List Feels So Dang Hard and What To Do Instead", hosted by Amy Porterfield. 7 Simple Solutions To Attract New Email Subscribers At Lightning Speed* Reserve your seat here: KrystalProffitt.com/emailBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! I am so excited to have my friend Amy Connell back on the show as we celebrate the launch of her first book: Your Worthy Body: Finding Freedom In Health by Breaking All The Rules. Amy's message of loving the body that God gave you and being able to break the rules that society tells us are for a one size fits all has been the grace I need to give myself. She wants to share that as agape love is unconcerned with self and concerned with the greatest good for another, our idea of health should be less concerned with how we look and more concerned with being physically equipped to love others.

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in caring for others that we don't make time to care for ourselves well. Amy Connell shares how God has helped her to redefine health and body image from His perspective. "I've heard one thing over and over from women: 'I'm so busy taking care of everybody else--my job, kids, husband. I'm doing the best that I can to take care of myself but I look around and I feel like what I'm doing is not enough.' My mission is helping you to find balance and freedom, to empower your body so you can take care of it and do the things God has called you to do." --Amy Connell Bio: Amy Connell is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and imperfect eater.
