We are continuing our focus on movement when it comes to having a beach-ready body. In this episode, we dive into the practical realities if we want to increase the movement in our lives. Too many of us think it is impossible with our crazy schedule. The truth is it can happen with some specific focus.Reality One: You've Got to PlanThe movement required to live with a beach-ready body does not happen by accident.Planning your exercise time and how you add more movement to your life is something that you have to prioritize. The reality is no one can do this for us. We must take personal responsibility for ourselves and our bodies. We can blame society and our schedules but we make time for what's important. If we aren't making time for more movement, we need to be honest and realize we don't prioritize it enough.Reality Two: Consistency is KeyLong-term success is something that we can do regularly. We also want to take into account what is fun.We all tend to stick with things we enjoy more than things we hate.We should look for things we enjoy doing or at least, we enjoy the feeling we have afterwards from having done it.Reality Three: Variety and ChallengesOne of the great things about different types of exercise is it works our bodies in many ways. This keeps things fresh and can help stop the boredom of doing the same thing all the time.We recently challenged men to focus on getting under 30% body fat as a starting point.Challenge: Beach-Ready Body Movement PlanStep 1: Decide the WhatStarting begins when we decide what we will do to add movement into our lives. The best time might be the early morning or at lunch. We may need to experiment to find the best time and process but avoiding the issue won't get anything done. The key point is to start with something. Adjustments will come, but if we don't start we won't be able to figure the rest outStep 2: Forget Past Failures & VictoriesTwo biggest mindsets that hurt us.The first one is where we beat ourselves up for getting so out of shape. We also can't allow our past victories to influence us.The goal of a beach-ready body life is to have a process that we enjoy and can stick with for sustained health.Step 3: Get HelpSometimes the best thing we can do to develop consistency is to get help.Paid coaching, something online, or a combination of the two.Coaching also helps to bring more fun and confidence to our movement plans. When we know what we are doing from our coaching we can enjoy it more.We have a special course Physical Health 101 that is a deep dive into making fitness a reality in our lives. Find it at www.thrivingman.comStep 4: Find CommunityOne of the best ways to make movement part of our lives is to join a community. Many people go to a class at a gym because of the sense of community and fun it brings. We could even get a friend to join us in our new plan. This can bring a challenge and a sense of accountability to both of youMovement-Focused Final ThoughtsThe beach-ready body is something every one of us can have long-term.The key is to develop healthy habits over the long run. This isn't a quick fix and we cannot expect weight to drop off overnight.Start this week! Don't wait until things are perfect or you have a perfect plan. You won't regret it and you will be stronger because of it.RESOURCES TO HELP YOU THRIVE AS A MAN========================

Today, we're going to go deep on an incredibly important subject, albeit one with a somewhat less than stirring name if you aren't already familiar: The northwest forest planThe northwest forest plan sets the overall management strategy for 17 National Forests across a staggering 24 million acres of federal lands in Washington, Oregon and northwestern California, and the forest service is in the process of changing that plan in a significant way for the first time in its 30 year history! Those changes could have absolutely massive consequences for the future of some of our most iconic forests, the human and non-human communities that rely on them, and even for the planet. So it is vitally important that we make sure that the Forest Service amends the northwest forest plan in a way that strengthens forest protections, prioritizing ecosystem health and carbon sequestration.Sadly, the higher ups in forest service may very well try to use this process as a way to weaken environmental protections and increase logging, even on mature and old growth! We can't let that happen.  This is a once in a generation opportunity and threat, and it is going to take massive public pressure and engagement to prevail over the Timber industry machinations that would seek to re-open these forests for wholesale liquidation.  To talk about all this I'm joined by the Coast Range Association's Director, Chuck Willer.  We're going to go through our campaign to educate, activate, and empower local grassroots groups to protect these forests, and why we are focusing our efforts on the Siuslaw National Forest here in the Coast Range. You can learn more about everything we'll be talking about today on the home page of our website, coastrange.org.Support the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!

As of August 30, 2023 is now two thirds of the way until the end. Perhaps one way of thinking about that is that we have now heard both sides of a long-playing record designed to play at 33 revolutions per minute. It is at this point where the metaphor perhaps falls apart, but I'm still curious to know: What are you going to listen to in the next 166,656 minutes or so? This is Charlottesville Community Engagement. On today's program:* Amazon Web Services announces they will invest $11 billion in two data center campuses by the year 2040* Charlottesville City Council and the Planning Commission learn that allowances for AirBnB and other forms of short-term rentals will not be eliminated as part of the zoning reform* Charlottesville seeks input on steps to keep improving on the city's accessibility * The Albemarle Economic Development Authority signs grant paperwork for biotech startup Agrospheres * The Free Enterprise Forum releases a periodic report on local government spending * Charlottesville City Council is briefed on ranked choice voting Charlottesville Community Engagement is perhaps kind of like an afternoon newspaper, and one looking to boost its circulation. Sign up for free!First shout-out: Plant Northern Piedmont NativesSince the beginning of this newsletter, one Patreon supporter has dedicated their shout-out to an organization that seeks to draw awareness of the importance of native species to the ecosystem. As summer comes to an end and fall begins, Now is the time to visit  Plant Northern Piedmont Natives to learn what you can about what species are specific to your region! Plant Northern Piedmont Natives is one of ten regional campaigns for ten different ecosystems across Virginia, including Eastern Shore. Take a look at the full map below for the campaign for native species where you are in the Commonwealth. You can also download a free copy of their handbook: Piedmont Native Plants: A Guide for Landscapes and Gardens. In this guide, Piedmont native plants are defined as those that evolved before the influence of European settlements shaped and changed the landscape. Plants included in the guide were selected from the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora and occur naturally within the region. Amazon to invest $11 billion in Louisa County Louisa County has announced that Amazon Web Services will invest $11 billion to build two data center campuses within two Technology Overlay Districts. “The campuses will position AWS as one of the largest private-sector employers in Louisa and will create hundreds of new jobs,” reads a press release sent out this afternoon. The county's website describes the technology overlay districts as areas within Louisa's growth area that are close to road networks and electric transmission lines. They're also areas where residential and retail development are not being encouraged. Supervisors approved the technology overlay districts in April, according to the Central Virginian. The vote to add the districts to the county's Land Development Regulations was 6 to 1. Earlier this year, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Amazon Web Services would invest $35 billion in Virginia by 2040. That now includes this investment in Louisa. “We're proud to partner with AWS to expand their operations in a world with a growing demand for cloud computing infrastructure,” said Louisa County Board Chairman Duane Adams.Amazon Web Services is looking at two specific sites according to Louisa County Community Engagement Manager Cindy King. “AWS is evaluating two sites,” King said in an email. “What would become the Lake Anna Technology Campus (LATC) near the North Anna Power Station; and the North Creek Technology Campus (NCTC) near the Northeast Creek Reservoir.”King said construction activity could begin as soon as 2024. The Board of Supervisors will enter into a performance agreement with Amazon Web Services. That agreement could also see the rebate of tax revenues with details to be worked out in the future. Homestay provisions will not be eliminated as part of zoning code updateAs Charlottesville plans for public hearings on a new zoning code, a proposed prohibition on short-term rentals of “homestays” has been pulled from consideration.“We've gotten substantial comment back and in conversations with various of my colleagues and others in the community, we believe that this is a larger issue than we might have anticipated and one that we would recommend we kick out of this process and take up after the zoning ordinance is adopted,” said James Freas, the city's director of Neighborhood Development Services. A consolidated draft of the Development Code released earlier this month had removed “Homestay” from a list of accessory uses that would be allowed under the new zoning. That had not been included in previous drafts released earlier this year. Freas said this is one example of how the city's zoning code should be considered a living document that will be updated over time. He made his comments at a briefing given to the Planning Commission and the City Council on Tuesday. “The intent here is for the Planning Commission to conduct a public hearing on Thursday, September 14,” Freas said. “That hearing will be in Council Chambers so note the change in venue and it will begin at 4 p.m.”Notice has been mailed to property owners in the city about the public hearing. Those who wish to speak will be limited to two minutes. Freas said it will be up to the Planning Commission to determine if they would like to vote on a recommendation or if that will be done at a later time. Dates have been reserved for September 19 in Council Chambers and September 26 at City Space. Once the Commission is done with their work, Freas said Council will hold their own work sessions on a range of topics. If any changes are to be made, a new draft will be produced for Council before their vote. The plan is for Council to hold their own public hearing. Once adopted, the zoning won't take effect until a specific date after the day a vote is taken. Some projects currently in the process may have the opportunity to proceed under the old rules, but where that line will be drawn is not yet known. Freas also addressed another item that is not in the draft zoning code. The Comprehensive Plan's Future Land Use map designated “Sensitive Community Areas” which depicted places where residents are subject to displacement pressure. “We have not moved forward with an overlay or zoning specific to Sensitive Community Areas,” Freas said. “I would note that a number of the recommendations that are in the Sensitive Community Area recommendation page… have been incorporated into the general zoning ordinance.” Freas said this includes allowing for more units to be built across the city and changes to allow smaller lot sizes in some residential zoning areas. He said there was a sense that restricting development in those area would limit wealth-building opportunities.“If the displacement is a result of rising taxes, there are other ways of addressing that issue as well,” Freas said.  City Councilor Michael Payne said he did not support the lack of a specific overlay.“I would expect that this will definitely be one of the topics we need to have a work session about,” Payne said. “I know it was pretty integral into the original plan and strategy and the connection to the [Affordable Housing Plan] and I know just in the past week or two, this has been of particular interest to the 10th and Page Neighborhood Association as well as the Fifeville Neighborhood Association.”Freas pointed out that the Comprehensive Plan clearly states that specific non-zoning interventions may need to be made for each community. A question from me: Who should do that work? The city government? Non-profits? Individual homeowners? This particular part of the conversation is not over. Charlottesville seeks input on update of accessibility planThe city of Charlottesville is in the early stages of updating a plan that seeks to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The federal legislation became effective in 1990 and requires localities to make sure public facilities can be accessed by anyone. In Charlottesville, that means the update of a Transition Plan with work underway. The last version was adopted by Council on June 3, 2013. “While we are continuously working on improving accessibility, an updated Transition Plan will help us benchmark where we are now and develop a roadmap for where we can be in the future,” said Paul Rudacille, the city's ADA coordinator. As part of the work, crews have completed a self assessment of 165 miles of sidewalk owned by the city to identify potential barriers. This fall, the city's parks and other facilities will be reviewed as will services. Nothing happens in this community without a survey. There's a longform version that takes up to ten minutes to fill out. There's also a shorter one.The city has hired the firm Precision Infrastructure Management to oversee production of the new plan. There will also be a town hall meeting on September 20. Albemarle EDA signs agreement for Agrospheres fundingThe Board of Directors for the Albemarle Economic Development Authority has ratified a performance agreement with a local company that seeks to expand its sale and manufacture of a new generation of pesticide delivery systems.Agrospheres has set up operations at 1180 Seminole Trail and recently was awarded $200,000 from the Commonwealth of Virginia's Development Opportunity Fund. There's also a $36,000 from the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. “They've committed to $25 million of capital investment and creating 53 new jobs for research and development and a test of a manufacturing area,” said J.T. Newberry, Albemarle's interim director for economic development. AgroSpheres got its start as a laboratory venture at the University of Virginia. The company will be seeking to hire people with experience in biotech fermentation, plant molecular biologists, and other types of scientists. Payam Pourtaheri, founder and CEO of AgroSpheres, told the EDA's Board on August 22 that 14 of those jobs have been created so far.“The facility isn't up and running yet so a lot more jobs will be created,” Pourtaheri said. “We've recently received organic approval for our technology that helps basically to provide a controlled release of biological pesticides.” Pourtaheri said the technology is free of microplastics unlike other delivery systems. “Really excited about that and that's what we're going to be manufacturing here in Albemarle County,” Pourtaheri said. Approval from the United States Environmental Protection Agency is needed before the product can become commercially available. Pourtaheri said he's hopeful the green light will be given within a year. * Review the performance agreement* Review the resolution authorizing a local match for the two state grantsSecond shout-out: Camp AlbemarleToday's second subscriber-supported public service announcement goes out to Camp Albemarle, which has for over sixty years been a “wholesome rural, rustic and restful site for youth activities, church groups, civic events and occasional private programs.”Located on 14 acres on the banks of the Moorman's River near Free Union, Camp Albemarle continues as a legacy of being a Civilian Conservation Corps project that sought to promote the importance of rural activities. The Free Enterprise Forum whittles down the localities to Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Some interesting highlights:* Charlottesville had the highest per capita spending in the region at $5,385 in FY22* Albemarle's per capita spending in FY22 was $3,643.90* Nelson County's per capita spending in FY22 was $3,392.21 * Louisa County's per capita spending was $3,356.56 * Greene County's level of spending per person is $3,212.20  * Fluvanna County's per capita spending in the period was $2,836.63. That's the lowest amount. What else is in the report? Take a look on the Free Enterprise Forum's website.Council briefed on ranked choice voting Should Charlottesville switch to an alternative form of voting that proponents say could increase participation? The earliest the city could make a transition to what is known as “ranked choice voting” is in 2025, but the five-member City Council got a briefing at its meeting on August 21. “Instant runoff voting, or ranked choice voting, is a voting system where a voter can rank their ballots sequentially in order of preference rather than just give a single or limited number of candidates for their choice of winner,” said Taylor Yowell, the city's registrar. Proponents of this method of voting argue that it can help expand the number of candidates who seek office. (view Yowell's presentation)The votes are counted in order and individuals who receive enough votes to pass the threshold qualify for the ballot. If there are more slots remaining, the candidate who received the fewest votes is dropped from the second round.“The process will continue until a winner has earned over the election threshold,” Yowell said. That threshold depends on how many seats are available. This method was authorized by the General Assembly in 2020 as one of the electoral reforms introduced when Democrats held both Houses in Richmond. “In the session of the legislature in 2020, a bill was passed to allow ranked choice option for City Council and Board of Supervisors elections throughout the state,” said Jim Nix, one of three members of the Charlottesville Electoral Board and the only Democrat. In August 2011, Nix presided over the Charlottesville Democratic Party's use of a “firehouse primary” to select its three candidates for City Council that year from seven candidates. “I counted the votes for it,” said Charlottesville Mayor Lloyd Snook.“That was fun,” Nix said. “I was there, too,” The contest resulted in the the nomination of Satyendra Huja to a second term as well as the first nominations for both Kathy Galvin and Dede Smith. Galvin and Huja got a plurality of votes in the first round, but Smith didn't secure enough votes until the fifth round when she edged out Paul Beyer by 29 votes. (view the results on cvillepedia)Nix said the legislation that passed in 2020 has a sunset date of 2031. He said Arlington used ranked-choice to select two members of its County Board in a primary race this past spring. “It appears to have been successful,” Nix said. “The process worked as intended. The results were published quickly. Actually, too quickly, but we don't need to go into that. The outcome was clear and unchallenged and public satisfaction was high based on the results of some online surveys that were done.” However, Nix said criticisms have emerged about the tabulation method that had been used and a decision has been made in Arlington County to not proceed with ranked choice in the general election.  He said one issue is that the voting software used only allowed voters three choices for the two seats. Charlottesville's software would allow voters to rank six. The first time Charlottesville could use ranked choice voting would be in the June 2025 primary when the seats held by Juandiego Wade and Brian Pinkston would be up. That's less than 22 months away! Yowell said only the City Council races could be conducted with ranked choice voting, and not School Board races. She said there would be a cost associated with educating the public about how the new process works, should Council decide to proceed. Yowell said the city should also update to a new version of its Hart software at a cost of around $4,000. For more details, view the video of the meeting on the city's streaming service. A factor to consider and a question to you. This year, five candidates sought three Democratic nominations for three seats on Council. Only three candidates are on the ballot. Only five people submitted paperwork to be on the School Board ballot for four seats. Only four qualified. If any locality pursues ranked choice, what steps might be taken to encourage more people to actually run? Reading material:* Charlottesville City Council approves new employee pay policy, Allison Metcalf, Cavalier Daily, August 29, 2023* Charlottesville leaders, residents split over zoning rewrite, Jason Armesto, Charlottesville Daily Progress (paywall), August 29, 2023#571 shall go gently into that good night There are six segments in this installment, two more than anticipated when I began writing everything out this morning. I had a lot of resistance recording this episode, but I know that this community is filled with the most amazing human beings, and I feel grateful, despite how vulnerable it is, to share what's happening behind the scenes, to truly go there with you, because I know that I'm not alone in it. I've been navigating the complexities within the duality of reconnecting with my purpose and anchoring more deeply into my purpose while simultaneously navigating the deep grief and loss of my sweet, forever puppy dog, Penny. I've realized that our plans and expectations of ourselves are not always aligned with the highest good and to rise to the occasion of whatever lessons life presents. Ironically, I went from one of the most amazing weeks of my life and career at the Academy of Breath's advanced practitioner training in Mexico, to the deeply painful experience of losing my Penny. The retreat in Mexico was a truly incredible and unforgettable experience, connecting with individuals I've supported for years and witnessing profound breakthroughs. This retreat allowed me to see the impact of my work and the magic that can happen when people come together in person. Coming home to a sick pup was truly heartbreaking, and losing her has reminded me of how precious life is, and to always live full out.Join me on this episode as we explore the duality of passion and grief, the lessons learned, and the potential for growth that lies within embracing the challenges life throws our way. Together, we'll navigate the complexities of our personal and professional journeys, finding strength, purpose, and transformation. I hope that just seeing how I've navigated it, how I'm showing up for myself and my thought process behind the lessons and the trial and the error will give you an expanded perspective, and a different choice potentially to make as you navigate the ebbs and flows of your life as well. So thank you for being here with me. I love y'all so much.“Grief teaches you so much, pain teaches you so much, and I hope that you really just let this land, because I don't want a single one of you to let life pass you by, or to have the regret of not being more present, or not celebrating the small things, or whatever it is that's happening right now in your life, there's something here for you.” - Ava JohannaWhat I talk about:Letting go of our expectations to accept there's a greater planThe awe inspiring, unforgettable experience I had at the retreatThe intention behind my new offers for entrepreneurs, coaches and leadersLosing my sweet PennyProcessing the grief of lossThe message I've been receiving after Penny's deathRising to the occasion of the lessons we're learning“Being on retreat in person with my people, having mirrors and reflections back of what I've created and how the work that we've done together has been able to create a ripple effect into their lives and what they create for their clients was honestly one of the greatest gifts that I've gotten this year.” - Ava JohannaNew episodes of the Alchemized Life Podcast are live every Tuesday!Resources and Offers:In loving memory of PennyCheck out the retreat highlights on InstagramJoin the Space Holders Bootcamp August 7-18thJoin the Group Magic Mini Mind starting August 2023Join the Waitlist for The Academy of Breath:

Have you ever thought about the value of your time? How much it can impact others, and how prioritizing it reflects how we prioritize people? Matt Alderton is known for his expertise in building referral relationships and networking strategies. Matt shares his insights on the power of giving time to others, the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people, and the success he has achieved through his unique approach to business networking.  Referral relationships play a pivotal role in business growth, and Matt understands the significance of building these partnerships, especially for startups. He shares his blueprint for creating a 6-figure referral marketing plan and explains how implementing this system with a team can generate a 7-figure return from networking alone. Whether you're an early entrepreneur or an established business owner, Matt's framework provides invaluable guidance in training your sales team and taking your business to new heights.  But networking isn't just about numbers and transactions for Matt. It's about creating a community where individuals can connect personally, forging meaningful relationships beyond business. That is why BX Networking stands out from other traditional networking groups. Matt's vision is to provide a space where members can participate as little or as much as they want, attend different locations, and build referral partnerships outside the room.  Join Vinay Koshy as he dives deep into the mind of Matt Alderton, a leader who understands the true essence of time, the magic of building referral relationships, and the power of surrounding oneself with the right people. Matt Alderton is a passionate entrepreneur and business coach who dedicated his career to helping people develop and achieve their fullest potential. With over 15 years of experience managing teams and running various businesses, Matt has learned the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people for success. After facing his challenges and realizing the impact of having a strong support system, Matt founded BX, a business support network that aims to help small businesses grow and thrive.  What started as an education-focused platform quickly evolved into a community of like-minded individuals across Australia, the US, Canada, and Europe. Matt believes business success comes from building strong relationships and doing business with people rather than just businesses. Through BX, he provides resources, networking opportunities, and referrals to help entrepreneurs achieve their business goals. In this episode, Jeanette shares her thoughts on the importance of being true to yourself and embracing authenticity in both business and personal life. As adults, we often forget our divine uniqueness and the importance of staying true to our calling without feeling the need to conform to others' expectations. Success lies in being true to yourself and using your unique gifts and talents. Tune in!You are unique. God gave unique traits, strengths as well as "weaknesses" and that is what makes you, you, and that's also what others want to see. Many people make the mistake of creating a curated persona choosing the characteristics they think will resonate and be well received, but if you do that, the people who need to hear your message and connect with you through your God-given personality, will flee from you. They will notice that something is off because you are not being true to yourself. Full disclosure, there will be someone who will not like you anyway, but what is really important is to establish connections with the right audience, with the ones who are meant to hear you and follow you, and that will only happen if you embrace all of who you truly are, who God made you to be, and show up with honesty and integrity. In this episode:Questioning the concept of fitting inThe importance of embracing your calling and doing things your own way, guided by God's planThe importance of authenticity in business and personal life, not imitating others for successThe importance of being open to God's directionShowing both the messy and beautiful sides of your personalityWanna go deeper? A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host for this show. A few weeks ago, I published a video on planning 2023 on my YouTube channel. In that video, I encouraged viewers to create a note in their notes app and to begin a two-month brainstorming period where they looked at a few areas of their lives and thought about what they would like to change.  These areas were around what they would like to change about themselves, their work and their lifestyles. Plus a couple of questions about goals and bucket lists.  The idea here is to open you up so you can go deeper than your usual new year's resolutions and to give you time to think about the person you want to become.  Well, that two month brainstorming period is coming to an end and it's time to start looking at what you can do in 2023 that will move things forward on the areas you would like to make changes and in this week's podcast, a break from the normal format, I will take you through the process of building a plan for 2023 that will be achievable, fun and more importantly will be the catalyst for the changes you will need to turn these ideas into reality.  So, this week, the Mystery Podcast Voice will be having a break, and we'll get straight into the answer. So, if you did the annual planning exercise, you will hopefully have quite a lot of ideas written down on your planning sheet.  Now, don't worry if you haven't done the annual planning exercise; there's still a little time left for you to do it.  So, the four main questions on the planning sheet are: What would I like to change about myself? What would I like to change about my lifestyle? What would I like to change about the way I work? What can I do to challenge myself? Each of these questions is designed to get you to explore a different part of your life, from you as an individual to the way you work. The final question on challenging yourself is there to help prevent you from stagnating and getting stuck inside the dangerous comfort zone.  If you have completed this exercise over the last six to eight weeks, you will, by now, have quite a list. The problem is you will not be able to complete all of these ideas in twelve months. The trick now is to look at your list as a whole and look for a pattern.  Often you will find in the part about making changes to yourself that there will be some areas you have not been happy with for a while. Your time management might be bad, or you may not be happy with the state of your health.  To give you an example, last year, I wanted to improve the quantity and quality of my sleep—which was not healthy. This led me to look at my day as a whole and to see why I was not getting sufficient sleep. I had too many early starts and late finishes. I could see from my calendar that this was not sustainable, so I created a few rules.  Now, I must be finished at my computer by 11pm and be in bed by 11:30pm. I also changed my morning start from 6:00am to 7:30am.  I also made a point to read Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep, which is a fantastic book and learned a lot more about ensuring I had a better quality of sleep each night. I have not been perfectly consistent with this, but I have made a lot of progress and will continue to refine this going into 2023.  And this is something you will discover. It's unlikely you will be able to change something perfectly—most things we are working towards will always be works in progress—but the act of starting and building in new routines and habits will lead you towards where you want to be.  When it comes to the lifestyle question, what we are looking at here is the way we are living our lives. Three years ago, at the end of 2019, I realised I had got stuck in a rut in where we were living. A few years earlier, my wife and I had decided we wanted to move to the east coast and away from the noisy and poor air quality of the big city, but we were doing nothing about it. I saw that our reliance on the public transport system was great if we wanted to stay living in the big city, but was the reason we were ‘trapped' there. We decided that the best way to break this would be to get a car. And that became our goal in 2020.  This meant I needed to get serious about saving money, and that is what I did from the start of 2020. Now, I was helped by the pandemic. That reduced our expenditure significantly because for a large part of 2020, we were unable to go out.  In September of that year, we bought our car, and that changed everything for us. We travelled around the country once a week, discovering new places, and in December, we found a guest house on the east coast that we could rent monthly, and we took the plunge. We signed up for an initial three-month stay in January, and that led to us staying the whole of 2021. At the end of it, we had let our apartment in the city go and moved to a new home on the east coast.  None of these changes would have taken place if I had not identified areas we were not entirely happy with. It was taking the time to look at things as a whole and seeing where we could make changes that would lead us to where we really wanted to be.  Now, what about the way you work? Here you have greater control over things than you may imagine. The pandemic has brought more flexible ways to work, and that's a great thing. Research suggests that if you are more of an extrovert, you thrive in an environment surrounded by people. Conversely, if you are more of an introvert, you will find working from home incredibly satisfying and productive.  So, perhaps one of the first things you want to investigate is what kind of person you are. Where do you do your best work? Alone, in a quiet place or when surrounded by people and noise.  But there are other things you can look at with your work. For one, identify what your core work is. This is the work you are paid to do. Look at your job description. For instance, a departmental manager is employed to manage a department. What are the core tasks involved in managing a department? Where do you think you could improve in these areas?  For instance, if you want to improve productivity within your team, the best thing you can do is improve your communication. If your way of communicating is not simple, direct, and to the point when assigning projects, that will profoundly affect the outcome of the project.  The method is to tell your team in clear terms what the outcome you want is, and to trust that your team will use their skills and knowhow to deliver the results on time. Interfering, calling too many meetings, and micro-managing will result in a team that performs poorly and is demotivated.  Learn to tell them what you want to and let them get on with it. Develop simple reporting systems that require little time from your employees so they can stay focused on the objective.  If you are a salesperson, what could you change next year that would improve your overall performance? Where do you feel you are weak and what could learn, change or develop that will improve that area?  And that brings us to the final question: what can you do to challenge yourself? One of the biggest dangers in our lives is our comfort zone. Our ancestors had to deal with war, revolution, disease and predators. Today, for the majority of people on earth, our lives are incredibly easy by comparison. We have an abundance of food, safe houses and access to clean water.  This has made our lives far too easy, and we no longer put ourselves in challenging situations. Without challenging ourselves, we stop growing and when that happens our lives atrophy and we fall behind. You cannot let that happen. It's devastating on your mental health and leaves you feeling left behind.  Set yourself a challenge in 2023. That could be to climb the tallest mountain in your country, or to do the from couch to 5k running race. Alternatively you could sign up for a challenging course such as a masters degree or to design a 30 day challenge for each month of the year.  Something that would really challenge you.  The great thing about setting yourself something challenging is you will reintroduce yourself to the concept of failure. Failure is the best way to learn and to grow. It's through failure we learn what works and what does not work. From my own personal experience I've learned that failure is the greatest teacher there is.  It teaches you to analyse where things went wrong, where they went well and and helps you to reframe problems and difficulties so you find a way around them.  The important thing to remember is you do not have to change everything all at once. Changing slowly over a number of years is likely to give you better results than trying to change everything in one year. One of my favourite Tony Robbins' quotes is “Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can accomplish in a decade”  So, think long-term. Having an approach of CANI—Constant And Never-ending Improvement will help you to achieve the things you want to achieve and bring you a lot more fulfilment that trying to change too much too fast and giving up. That destroys your confidence and leaves you feeling terrible about yourself.  Thank you for listening and it just remains for me now to wish you all a very very productive week.

How to create a plan you'll follow through on starts with setting a clear foundation for that plan. Many clients come to me when they aren't following through on achieving something they want. Even when they have a plan, they still aren't doing what they think they need to do to achieve it. Once we dig in the reason is usually based in a lack of clarity around what they really want. Or more specifically, the motivation underneath what they think they want. Without that clarity, most people end up creating a plan that is misaligned. Misalignment will naturally create additional resistance to taking action, which adds to the stress inherent in change. In this episode of Unlimited, I explore what it looks like to create an aligned plan that supports follow through to achieve your goals.  Some of what I talk about in this episode includes:Being vs DoingThe question to stop askingStructure of a planThe importance of buffer time Staying accountable without shame Planning for distractions LINKS REFERENCED IN THIS EPISODE:What's Killing My Motivation episodeValerie's Resources PageIf you found this episode helpful, please share it!
