Kris and David are guestless as we discuss the week that was April 12-18, 1999.We start off by talking about Davey Boy Smith, as this was when he was stuck in a Calgary hospital in severe pain from a spinal infection and got fired by WCW. We talk about all the issues that he had leading up to this and what his future held. From there, we go to WCW proper for a wild week with a very newsworthy Nitro full of big matches and angles then a Thunder that was appropriately Thunder-esque. We also have all the wild drama that is par for the course in WCW in this era, featuring Arn Anderson having a pretty rough week, Eric Bischoff speaking on WCW Live, bad morale in the company and so much more.International is next, as Vader wins the Champion Carnival tournament in AJPW, Atsushi Onita goes back to school, Yuki Kondo becomes the King of Pancrase, and tons more. Then we go back to the United Status, where Paul Heyman speaks to the Torch about ECW's mounting financial issues while they are actually doing some decent house show business and producing some solid TV, plus news on TNN picking up a wrestling show, Randy Hales baring his soul on Memphis TV, and lots more.We then close with the WWF, as they make some roster cuts (sort of), and we go over why that is happening despite the record business they were doing at the time, plus a crazy episode of Monday Night Raw, Steve Austin being hit by a car (in real life), interesting quotes from members of company management in Raw Magazine, and a show-closing news item that is almost surely the most ominous closer in BTS history. This is a slam-packed show here, folks, so you definitely don't want to miss this!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 Davey Boy Smith0:23:29 WCW1:49:41 Japan: AJPW, NJPW, Atsushi Onita, BattlARTS, CAPTURE, IWA Japan, Pancrase, Arsion, & JWP2:24:19 Classic Commercial Break2:29:18 Halftime2:59:26 Latin America: AAA, CMLL, Tijuana, & WWC3:09:29 Other USA: NWA, ISPW, ECWA, ECW, TNN, Power Pro, MAW, Tor Berg/WNWA, & Portland3:46:09 WWF5:35:15 Patreon Preview: Owen Hart has zero fucks to give in his comments about Mike TysonTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. We start this recap in Japan which will be the same place we finish it with Pancrase 305, and then we have some interesting news bits to cover from Rizin and Deep Jewels. Pancrase 305 was a really good card, I’ve been watching Pancrase since back in the day so I really enjoy their shows on a nostalgia level. I’m going to put the full results up at AsianMMAPodcast.com so you can check that out there. First I want to talk about the main event where we saw Isao Kobayashi unify the featherweight strap against a game intern champ Nazareno Malegarie. This was a 5 round banger that had me on the edge of my seat. I had both men winning two rounds going into the 5th This is where Kobayashi turned it up and put on a pressure to win the round and secure the victory to unify the belts. Talk about a fight to cap off a great card, this was it, this was the fight you wanted to have. The back and forth, the drama, the story that emerged. This is what fighting should be. The other fight on this card that really stood out to me was between two legends of the game, Yuki Kondo and Akihiro Gono. Both have careers spanning back to the 1990s and have fought in the biggest organizations in the world, UFC, Pride, Shooto, Deep, K1 and of course Pancrase. Just what an epic match to have on the card. This one went all three rounds and saw Kondo take the unanimous decision win. And it was the pressure and work rate from Kondo that made the difference in this fight. Fantastic fight, if you haven’t seen it, go watch it. Moving on This coming weekend we have RIZIN 16, which looks to be an awesome card. For sure I’ll be covering that in next weeks weekend update. But they also announced that RIZIN fighter Rena Kubota will be facing Lindsey VanZandt at Bellator 222 June 14th at MSG. This will be Rena’s first time fighting outside of Japan, so it will be interesting to see how she does. That time shift can be difficult going in both directions. But hopefully, that won’t be a factor. In other news from Japan, we now know that UFC, Rizin and Pancrase veteran Rin Nakai will return after more than a year away from the sport at Deep Jewels 24 on June 9th. Her opponent will be 0-2 Thai fighter Kaew Prachumwong. Both of her previous fights have been in Bangkok based promotion Full Metal Dojo, Here’s and odd fact, I reffed her last fight back in 2017 which was a losing bid against Cambodian fighter Tharoth Sam. I hate to say she’s just being fed to Rin as a tune-up, but that’s sort of how it seems. Phil Baroni talks to the Ringside Report a week before his big Strikeforce bout with Joe Riggs. One of the most controversial and outspoken fighters in the sport, Baroni made his MMA debut on July 5, 2000 and TKO’d John Hayes just 0:45 into the first round at “Vengeance at the Vanderbilt” in Plainview, New York. Due to his charismatic personality and devastating punching power, the Long Island native would go on to become one of the hottest properties in MMA. However, after some tough losses in the UFC, Baroni eventually moved to Japan to fight in PRIDE events, where he recorded notable wins over the likes of Yuki Kondo and Ryo Chonnan before returning to the states in 2007 to provide closure to his heated Internet feud with Frank Shamrock. In what would prove to be one of the top fights of the year (June 22, 2007, SHOWTIME PPV), Baroni suffered a second round TKO loss to Shamrock after Shamrock put him in a rear naked choke. Showing a warrior’s spirit, Baroni refused to tap, instead opting to pass out, forcing the referee to decline Shamrock submission victory. Soon after the fight, the California State Athletic Commission announced that Baroni had tested positive for two types of steroids, Boldenone and Stanozolol. He was suspended for one year and fined $2,500. Baroni has denied the accusations throughout and mounted an appeal in hopes of having the suspension overturned. While the suspension was never overturned, it was reduced from 12 months to six. He returned to action on March 15, 2008 in the ICON Sport promotion in Honolulu. After a strong first round, Baroni showed signs of a fighter who was coming off an extended layoff and ultimately lost the bout at 1:45 of round 5 against Kala Kolohe Hose in a contest to decide the vacant ICON middleweight championship. Baroni has reeled off three straight wins since moving down from the middleweight to welterweight division.
