Your Internal Compass: A Beacon for Faith and Action   Shannon and Dana are joined by Shandra Madson to discuss following our Internal Compass which is our ability to hear from God and be inspired and directed in our lives.   Shandra Madson started a campus of the Columbus Adult Education Center in her community which teaches English to refugees and immigrants. Shandra had become aware that about one in every five people in their community did not speak English because of a large influx of refugees. She said, “They were new to our city, new to our country, and it created a lot of different dynamics and concerns and ways that these people needed to feel loved and just helped along their path. So the Columbus Center is basically there to teach English, but really it's just a beautiful place where people were able to come and feel God's love for them. And I think that was kind of our main goal. English obviously was important, but they needed somewhere that they could come just to feel safe and feel loved, and just have that humanity where they weren't feeling it otherwise in their lives.”   00:00 Introduction and Welcome 00:39 Meet Shandra Madson 03:23 The Columbus Center: A Beacon of Hope 07:07 Trusting in the Lord: Shandra's Journey 09:30 Success Stories and Impact 19:06 Encouragement and Final Thoughts   “God doesn't care where we live. He doesn't care what our address is. He wants people to feel loved no matter where they are.” - Shandra Madson   “We don't have to know everything to be able to contribute and support.” - Dana Robb   “I think it's a beautiful thing that all of God's children are born with that light, and I think it's just a matter of are we willing to flame that light and just help grow it. and I think every little choice we make, every way we help God's children, that light just grows brighter and brighter. . . .It takes effort to recognize and effort to follow.” - Shandra Madson  “Another thing that's been really interesting is that some maybe came in with different biases or prejudices against another nation. And because we serve so many nations, and they're learning together and have become united through that, I've seen some of those guards that they came with be let down, and actually become friends with [eachother] and realize that they have more in common than they thought at first, and that some of these prejudices that they had in the beginning were really unfounded. . . . That's been such a beautiful, one of my favorite parts to witness, that happening at the center.” - Shannon Russell   “I think anytime we just reach out a hand of love and fellowship and kindness, it doesn't go unnoticed. People notice and feel that love of God as they serve.” - Shandra Madson   “One thing I love is just that we all came here with different talents, and it's so easy to compare with somebody else of like, “Wow, they've done this thing,” or “They have this ability or this talent,” but it's neat to see how God can use all of our talents differently, and it can help grow to be something beautiful for all of us.” - Shandra Madson   “I love that you said be still, you know, let's quiet yourself down. We live in such a rushed world, but really in order to connect to that internal compass, we have to take moments of stillness every day and quiet our minds and, and listen in.” - Dana Robb   Shannon Russell treasures her roles as a wife and mother, finding that the journey of learning and growing alongside her family is the most rewarding experience of her life. At her core, Shannon is passionate about helping others. Whether it be as a real estate agent guiding her clients to one of their most significant investments – their homes, or volunteering at the Columbus Center supporting refugees in learning English and become assimilated in the United States, or creating nonprofits focused on educating youth, she loves serving those around her and is committed to making a positive impact in her community. Shannon loves connecting with women from diverse backgrounds and perspectives through Big Ocean Women where women are empowered to generate solutions that enable them to live a life of joy and abundance. Her favorite pastimes are playing pickleball, board games, hiking, anything that puts her in nature, and being a beach bum. Whenever presented with the opportunity for adventure, Dana Robb is all in. Currently, this includes riding the local mountain biking trails with her husband, canyoneering, and climbing the hills of southern Utah. She loves to learn and explore with her six kids. She is drawn to the opportunities being involved with Big Ocean Women provides. Dana loves connecting to a global sisterhood where women's issues are being addressed through reframing and an abundance mindset.   Shandra Madsen is an entrepreneur at heart and has owned several businesses over the past couple decades.. Shandra and Todd have been married for 26 years and have 5 beautiful children, one son-in-law and two grandchildren. Being parents and grandparents is her ultimate joy. She enjoys spending time with their large extended family, camping, vacationing, playing games and enjoying the outdoors. Her love for Jesus Christ is foundational to who she is and serving her community and neighbors. She has loved serving as the Director with her husband of the Herriman Columbus Adult Education Center that helps hundreds of immigrants learn English. She is currently serving as the Chair over Humanitarian Aid with the Kamas Valley Community Foundation and excited to continue to serve in new and exciting ways.

In this episode of Uncover the Human, Alex and Cristina sit down with leadership coach Laura Shepherd for a rich conversation about following your internal compass. Laura shares her journey from corporate success to scuba instructor to coach, describing what it feels like when the compass spins, how she learned to recognize misalignment, and what it's like to step into the “exciting discomfort” of growth. Together, they explore the power of weekly reflection, rewarding progress along the way, and the courage it takes to leap when the next step isn't clear.Listeners will hear how authenticity, reflection, and self-leadership intertwine to create alignment that fuels both personal energy and effective leadership. Laura explains how leaders who do their inner work show up more fully, set clearer expectations, and create safe, trusting environments where teams can thrive. With metaphors ranging from compasses and mirrors to buses and statues, this conversation invites you to reflect on your own path—and consider whether you're moving toward possibility or simply checking boxes.

Why does Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz's law firm symbol incorporate the taiji / yin yang / supreme ultimate symbol with the scales of justice? Because powerful balance and constant internal strengthening is needed to beat the disharmony of a prosecution, and because for decades Jon has incorporated his taijiquan / t'ai chi ch'uan martial art (the Yang style 37-posture short form modified by megaster Professor Cheng Man Ch'ing /CMC ) into his pursuing the best defense. Jon writes here about applying taijiquan and other vital internal practices to defending his clients. https://katzjustice.com/transcending-poop-in-virginia-defense-view-of-fairfax-criminal-lawyer/Our guest for this episode is Jon Katz's amazing taijiquan teacher and author T. Julian Chu, whose teacher Benjamin Pang Jeng Lo was a senior stident of Professor Cheng. Jon has himself been blessed to have attended several weekend taijiquan training sessions taught by Ben Lo, learning firsthand what Master Lo meant when saying "No pain, no gain. No burn no earn" and "My name is Ben Lo. Bend low." Jon has also had fhe good fortune talking with Ben several times during breaks from those teaching sessions. Julian Chu is an amazing teacher, person, taijiquan practitioner, and altruist for teaching this martial art. With only a week's advance notice to him of this podcast episode, Julian convincingly illustrates not only why taijiquan helps everyone, but also how this martial art benefits litigants and their lawyers, including criminal defense lawyers, even in the presence of an angry prosecutor and a very firm judge. Among the many lessons taught by Julian in this episode are the power of active softness (not limpness and not brittleness), balance, quieting the mind, and investing in loss. Julian talks about the powerful moving meditation and mindfulness aspects of taijiquan, and about the science that shows why this practice works beyond one'a imagination. Julian recommends the following website for learning more about taijiquan, where several of his articles are included https://taijidc.wordpress.comIf you wish to study taijquan, Julian recommends his senior students at Wei Hwa Chinese School in Fairfax County (https://www.weihwa.org), and Li Ming Chinese Academy in the Capital Beltway area (http://li-ming.org/en/)If you wish to see highly advanced taijiquan practitioners in action, visit one of the weekly Sunday (starts 10:00 a.m.) summer taijiquan gatherings, where Julian (occasionally, as he transitions to North Carolina), many of his students and others practice the taijiquan form, push hands, sword, spear and saber. These Sunday morning summer sessions have started, taking place at the David C. Chen Memorial Tai Chi Court in Cabin John Regional Park, Potomac, Maryland. This podcast is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. Dana Robb, Shannon Russell, Andrea Garn, and Grace Raje discuss the tenet, “We recognize and follow our internal compass to speak and act with integrity.” “One thing is certain, [this internal compass] is like your own personal language, if you will. The more you learn to understand this language, speak it, and more importantly, act upon it, the better your choices become.” – Shannon Russell “Choosing to listen to your inner compass will help you to heal, and it will allow you to feel the most beautiful joy that there is to offer in your life.” – Shannon Russell “That's what we want most, isn't it? As moms is that our kids find their compass and find their connection with love.” –Andrea Garn “As we're talking about finding your inner compass and learning to listen to it, I thought it would be really important to bring that up for any listeners to maybe be able to identify times of dissociation in their life, especially if they've been through some trauma.” – Grace Raje “Grace and I felt like this really goes along with finding your inner compass because it's hard to listen to what your body is telling you when there's dissociation, when there's trauma. It takes more practice and more love to get those answers.” – Andrea Garn “In eating disorder recovery, even just with like basic anxiety management, understanding my body's cues has been one of the most helpful things.” – Grace Raje “Everything is a system. You know, the universe is a system, our society, our family, and inside of ourselves. We are the manager of our heart and of our emotions, and of the parts of us that are holding onto the trauma and the parts that are protecting ourselves by holding on in different ways. And so as we find that inner compass, we're able to create safety in all of the systems and creating safety in our internal system, can create it in our family and in the world.” – Andrea Garn “Sometimes we look to external sources, and those are important when you're trying to gather tools, right? But sometimes we put so much into the external sources that we deplete our own empowerment… we have that within us to heal.” – Shannon Russell “It's really the way we can heal. Nothing outside of us can do it for us. It's our work to do, and that's very empowering and beautiful.” – Andrea Garn “Take deep breaths, take time in nature, find out what things help you feel calm and help you feel better and feed you just like you would find out what your child likes or what your plant needs to grow” – Andrea Garn “When you take a walk to sort something out, that is literally therapy, because the movement of your feet back and forth is helping your mind untangle and process emotions and thoughts and feelings.” – Andrea Garn “As you listen to your inner compass and take action on that, the voices will get stronger. You'll start to notice and pay attention to when you're feeling calm, when you're feeling connected to nature, connected to your family, connected to your higher power.” – Andrea Garn “Surrounding yourself with people who are intentionally trying to tap into that inner compass is a huge support” – Grace Raje Andrea Garn, LCSW, has been a supporter and participant in Big Ocean Women for 7 years. She is trained in trauma and EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems, and specializes in supporting periods of transition in hospice care and as a licensed birth doula. She believes finding our inner compass is the way to heal ourselves, our families, and the world. Grace Raje has been a leader with Big Ocean Women for 7 years occupying various roles along the way. Did you know there are two major ways in which people receive feedback? That's right. Most people fall into a category of using an Internal Compass or an External Compass and depending on which you use it can drastically change the way you receive (or even give) feedback. This is why one person can walk up to a stage to receive their MVP of the year award and not even believe they deserve it despite the fact that everyone is whistling and clapping for them, whereas another person can walk up and fully enjoy their moment. I dig into this and so much more on this week's podcast. Listen now. Martine van Bijlert is a writer and researcher from the Netherlands. Now 52, she grew up in Iran and worked in places like Kabul, Grozny and Tehran as an aid worker, diplomat and researcher. She now divides her time between her own creative projects and her work for the Afghanistan Analysts Network, a Kabul-based think tank she founded with friends.  She is self-identified autistic and ADHD, and says she feels like she has always been surrounded by neurodivergent people, as a child, during her studies and in her work abroad, and perhaps because of that she thought things were easier for her than for other people, not harder - which is probably one of the reasons it took her a while to unearth her own neurodivergence. We talk about: ➡ Finding life more difficult as she's got older ➡ Realising that most of her family were probably neurodivergent, including her Bible-smuggling grandfather ➡ Being drawn to foreign countries after spending her early childhood in Iran ➡ How her neurodivergent objectivity, pragmatism and cool-headed logic helped her in dangerous situations ➡ Her experience of burnout after setting up and running an organisation in Kabul - and its links to neurodivergent idealism and how we can lose our internal compass as a result Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences. I'm Amy Richards, and after being diagnosed autistic at the age of 37 I'm now on a mission to learn more about different perspectives and issues around being a neurodivergent adult in a world that feels like it doesn't quite fit.   EPISODE LINKS: Martine's website: www.martinevanbijlert.com  Her (beautiful!) Hosts Kim Landeen and Carolina Allen discuss this month's tenet: “We are each unique and innately worthy of respect.” “I feel as though the world would be completely different if everyone truly understood what this tenet really means.” – Carolina Allen “As we really focus on the uniqueness, our individual uniqueness, and the uniqueness of those around us, and we see the worth, the divine and inherent worth within that uniqueness, great things can happen.” – Kim Landeen “There's an Islamic proverb that I love that says, ‘A lot of different flowers make a bouquet.'” – Kim Landeen The Mother Tree: Discovering the Love and Wisdom of Our Divine Mother by Kathryn Knight Sonntag -          Set your roots, engage in the work of the root, discover who you are, do the hard work of soul engagement -          Grow, don't just stay in the root work and “self-discovery,” get out of yourself and serve others “The term ‘self-care' has been kind of co-opted to mean ‘self-indulgence' in a way.” – Carolina Allen “I know as moms we give a lot, … I get it, … we are stretched thin, but also like there's power in that, like we're actually building something, it's not for nothing, you know, and it's worth the effort, it's worth the work.” – Carolina Allen “You can gain internal peace without needing to gain justice.” – Kim Landeen “We get to really know what we're made out of and who we are when we're put to the test, like when we have to actually engage and apply these things in very real ways and the best way to do that literally is to be there for people and serve them.” – Carolina Allen “I believe we need to reclaim ourselves… as maternal feminists, the reclaiming of who we are, are divinely inspired, empowered women, that show up in our homes, our communities, and this world. We need those women.” – Kim Landeen “As we sacrifice for the rising generation because of our maternal identities and because of … know the sacrifice that our physical bodies go through just to even bring about life and nurture that life after that life has been born, because of that there is a very powerful thread that we hold as an authority to the rising generation by way of influence. Meaning, because I am a present loving selfless person within the walls of my home with my children, … all of that authority built from love and from sacrifice has a very unique influence over that child ... in a sense that ‘My mom has been there for me, … I'm going to listen to what she has to say.' And If you live in a selfish manner, it's not there, you don't have that sway, you don't have that pull, you don't have that influence. The influence, to me, in my book is the greatest power that exists on the planet which is why I think mothers and this maternal work has been so undermined and has been so devalued throughout time to kind of make us forget … what it is the power that we really have … the way to exercise that power, like that self-empowerment, is to lean into the selflessness not the selfishness. And I think that there are … contradicting messages in our society. I'd say there's a really strong message in our society to lean into the selfish component and I think that we need to be really careful with that.” – Carolina Allen “To be a mother is to hopefully have influence… The jobs that we do in our home influence not just today or not next week, it influences generations.” – Kim Landeen “It's easy to pit these two against each other. It's easy to say you can either be selfless or selfish, and by definition, that's correct… I think it goes back to the intention of what you're doing and why you're doing it. It is selfless for me to say I am going to have structure in my life so I can get up and I can get the things that I need to get done so I can be present with my children when they are awake. It is selfless for me to say I'm going to take care of my body and refuse the things that I want to indulge in so I can have the energy and the stability to show up in the world when I need to show up. It is selfless of me to say I am going to study and I'm going to develop these different qualities so that I can then engage in political and social conversations. All of those things, the waking up early, the eating what I want to eat, the exercising, all of those could be seen as selfish components of what I'm doing, but it's the intent of what I'm doing… That's what it comes down to is the intent… It ultimately comes down to why are you doing what you are doing? What is it doing for you? What is it doing for those around you?” – Kim Landeen “These identity markers are important; they are deeply important to who we are… but how am I going to show up as that person? And that is where uniqueness comes in. That is where those divine gifts start to really shine. And there are moments of reflection, there are moments of going down into the roots and those are so important, so don't lose those moments of reflection. Don't say I'm just going to sacrifice everything and just keep going and going because there is burnout, there is lack of focus, there is lack of intentionality, that's where those roots come… When you disengage from what you're doing, and you get on this superficial level and you're not truly becoming a better person and you're not truly rejuvenating, you're not truly feeding yourself in a way that your body needs.” – Kim Landeen “I really wish that for everyone in the world, number one that everyone can understand that they're innately worthy of respect, … and that they are valuable irrespective of external circumstances or validation, that there is something unique about each and every listener, everyone on this planet that that means that like you as a person are valuable ... My single wish is that we can feel that, you know, that we can really feel in in the most humble the most beautiful but the most confident way and that we can have … courage to go and share our talents and not hide our light under a bushel but to stand and have this confidence this kind of inner confidence and inner … peace about us that can really influence the world.” – Carolina Allen “Healing truly comes from connection… There is also deep connection and healing that comes from reaching outside of yourself having those that are dependent on you be able to trust you and depend on you.” – Kim Landeen “The way I think the world needs to change is unique to my experiences. I've seen things that I want to improve.” – Kim Landeen Call to action: Engage in a way that you feel like you need to engage in to make the world better because of your unique experience.    Carolina Allen is the founder and leader of Big Ocean Women, the international maternal feminist organization representing perspectives of faith, family, and motherhood throughout civil society. Our emotions are like magnets that can point us to true north. But they can be really hard to fully feel and dissect in our busy, everyday lives. Also, as Jen acknowledges in this episode, a lot of this internal work can feel like naval gazing. There can be a temptation to either stay on the inside and never do anything with the new information acquired or to skip it altogether in favor of tackling something more active. But the truth is that if we want to connect more fully to our values, we must begin by cultivating this deep self-awareness. And then - equally important - move towards action informed by what we learn. We don't want to get stuck just in feelings. We want to progress to where we can identify the deeper truth that the feelings are trying to signal us to. And we explore ways to do just that in this episode of the Magical Mindset Moments Podcast. In today's episode, we're going to focus on a concept that I've mentioned numerous times on the show but never fully explained. It's an idea that undergirds all episodes of the podcast and a resource for anyone struggling with how to stay true to themselves. I call it: The Internal Compass. This naturally built-in navigation system manifests as a mental and emotional reaction to matters large and small. It offers sometimes clear, often subtle guidance on making decisions that fall in line with who you are, who you want to be and what you genuinely want to do. Everyone possess their own internal compass, but no one receives a manual on how to use it. Throughout their lives, most people — including myself — struggle with interpreting the compass's direction, leading to feelings of confusion, discontent and wasted time. Fortunately, I believe there are certain steps one can take to avoid this predicament and the trappings of self-deception.

In our day-to-day life, we have both internal and external tools for figuring and feeling stuff out. If you need to know how much of a tip to leave when eating out, you can do some math in your head or you can do it on a calculator. The same is true when it comes to navigating and negotiating the affairs of the heart - the relationships we have with ourselves, with each other, the Divine and the world around us. Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking about getting to know and when to use our inner calculator and inner compass, also known as the head and the heart, the intellect and the intuition. Decisions can be made from both places, and I think sometimes it behooves us to check in with the wisdom and guidance they each hold. When you have decisions to make or need guidance to create and choose - just know that you have incredible tools within you and available to you that require a little willingness, trust, faith and deep listening. It's simply a matter of making wise use of each of them where needed and not relying on only one of them all of the time. KK's Key Takeaways: • Where Is North (4:22) • Internal Compass (9:20) • Intellect Vs Intuition (14:40) • The North Star (18:46) • Compass & Calculator (23:09) • Sometimes People Are Too Busy (30:51) Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, writer, author, speaker, and the host of The Karen Kenney Show Podcast. In this episode, Sue and Marsha talk about the energy in the world right now and how to connect to our own internal compass. Our internal compass is the guide to how our body is feeling and handling the stress around us, as our bodies are giving us cues all day long.  It is our job to tune in and take responsibility for our choices, decisions and responses. If we are feeling more reactive then it is our job to figure out what is missing or what we need to change in our own lives. We also discuss the identity changes and shifts we are experiencing right now.  In this episode we discuss: 1) The heightened energy in the world right now, and learning how to listen to what we need and pouring it back into ourselves. It is time to look at our own energy and know when we need to pull back and connect back to ourselves. We have to learn to tune into our nervous system and what it is telling us that we need, because our nervous system is regulating our behaviour. 2) That it is normal for our energy and emotions to change, we are still responsible for how we choose to respond. If you are in the space of being triggered or upset, check your responses and energy… if you wouldn't say it to someone's face, please put the phone down and walk away.  3) Solution based thinking… both Marsha and Sue discuss the feelings of helplessness, especially right now, and this is a prime time to focus on solutions based thinking.  This means focusing on why to what, and zeroing in on awareness to change the pattern to ultimately change our energy and mindset. This takes it back to ownership, choices, boundaries and self-care. 4) Every single relationship we have in our lives stems from our relationship with ourselves first. Marsha shares some tips, strategies of how she moved from living in anger, resentment and frustration to allowing herself to receive support from others.Connect with Marsha: mvanwyn761@gmail.com  Connect with Sue: susan@flickit.ca Join the Every Body Holds a Story Facebook Group to be the first to hear about the launch details.  If you are an absolute yes and want one of the limited spots reach out to connect :https://www.facebook.com/groups/582412896496298 Application for Every Body Holds a Story Collaborative Bookhttps://www.marshavanw.com/assessments/2147512206 Follow us on Instagram:https://instagram.com/everybodyholdsastory Tune into Sue's podcast, Love Your Cells: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/love-your-cells-podcast/id1478170164 Tune into Marsha's podcast, Own Your Choices Own Your Life:https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/own-your-choices-own-your-life/id1445904739

Everyone has an internal compass. Unfortunately, a lot of people are walking around with broken compasses not knowing their needle is not pointing at true north. There are many forces in our culture competing to control your compass, such as politics, religion, and social media. The spirit of antichrist is working hard in the earth to move the needle in everyone's compass. Make sure you know where true north is (Christ), and know how to use the Bible to move your needle.

The path of least resistance in a career is not always the best long-term fit, nor the most fulfilling. And worst still is when we ignore the persistent voice in our heads telling us exactly the career path we know is right for us. Dr. Malea Maynard learned all these lessons and then some, as she transitioned mid career from Audiology to Medical Doctor. She had known since she was a young child that she wanted to be a doctor but somehow convinced herself it just wasn't meant to be. At age 32, while in the midst of her work in Audiology, she decided to go to medical school. She simply could not ignore the persistent inner compass that kept telling her that this was the work she was meant to do. In exchange for heeding this compass and with the investment a lot of time, effort, and money into this path of medicine, Dr. Maynard has been handsomely rewarded with fulfillment and purpose as a Family Medicine physician
