If you're a therapist, even if you're far from your practicum days, you can probably relate to the feeling of sitting in a session and being distracted by the thought of whether you're living up to the standard of a good therapist. And you've probably had a moment where you're sitting with a client or group and you heard something come out of your mouth and immediately thought, “That doesn't sound like something a good therapist would say.”Who is this mythical good therapist? What are their qualities and where do those ideas come from? When you think about that archetypal good therapist that you compare yourself to, is that therapist a blank slate?Does a good therapist take all the most challenging cases? Do they self-disclose? Do they diagnose and write treatment plans? Are they a quiet introvert? Do they have it all together? Nancy Jane Smith and I are talking through some of these questions today and how uncomfortable it can be when we sense we're going out of the “good therapist” box.Nancy Jane Smith, MSEd., LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor trainer, and author specializing in high-functioning anxiety. Nancy completed her postgraduate training in Gestalt Therapy at the Gestalt Institute of Central Ohio and is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. She has over 20 years of working as a counselor and coach and most recently created Self Loyalty Schoo,l an audio-based program to help quiet high-functioning anxiety. IN THIS EPISODE: What does it look like and how does it feel when we have our own back The three internal voices that we have Why the third voice – our biggest fan – is the one we really want to strengthen The role that self-loyalty plays when dealing with our inner critic Why Nancy avoids thinking “I deserve this” and how this thought-process may lead to false self-loyalty ABOUT MY GUEST:Nancy Jane Smith is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Coach specializing in High Functioning Anxiety and has spent 20+ years working as a counselor/coach. Nancy first joined me on this podcast back in 2018 when we talked about her book, The Happier Approach: Be Kind to Yourself, Feel Happier and Still Accomplish Your Goals, and specifically the three voices that we have in our heads: the Monger, the BFF, and the Biggest Fan.I invited Nancy to join me again so we can have a follow-up conversation about these internal voices/characters, and to talk about self-loyalty. If your program doesn't fill, first of all, welcome to the club! This secret club includes me and almost all of the people you see running successful programs right now. On one level, when your program doesn't fill, it means absolutely nothing. It means nothing about your future success, your brilliance, or your ability make this business fly. In this episode I'll share how it felt to me when my own program didn't fill years ago, a mindset process you may go through when a program doesn't fill, and then some questions to help you analyze what might have caused your program not to fill so that you can make changes for next time. Here's some of what I talk about: The stuff I told myself when my own program didn't fill Nancy Jane Smith's helpful approach to an anxiety producing situation like this How to know when you're ready to do a post-launch analysis (hint: don't do it while you're still in free fall!) Specific questions to ask yourself about your launch An argument for creating a 1:1 replicable offer first How to decide when you're ready to launch a group program My pep talk about why this wasn't just a failure How you can get my help with your pilot program Here are the questions to help you analyze post-launch (but only when you're ready to be kind to yourself): Question #1: How viable was your niche? Did you choose a niche of folks who were invested in solving a clear problem? Did you choose a niche that's specific enough? Did you go through a thoughtful process to clarify that niche? (niching is the MOST important element of this whole analysis. without a viable niche you're gonna do some HEAVY lifting from here forward.) Question #2: Did your offer clearly help to solve the problem for that niche? Question #3: How clear and effective was your messaging? How well did you communicate in your sales page and all of your messaging about how your offer helps solve that problem? Perhaps you didn't talk about your offer and the problem from your participant's point of view. Perhaps you focused on the approach you use, or you wrote or spoke with your colleagues in mind. Question #4: Did you get the word out to everyone you know with enthusiasm? Or did you hide a little bit? If you're not speaking with excitement about your offer in all the places, and you're just hoping people will find it...they won't. If you don't love the hell out of your offer it's hard for others to. Question #5: How big is your audience within this niche? (This part is really just math.) If not enough people know about your work, you can't fill a program yet. (Emphasis on yet.) It's often not possible to fill a small-group program with less than 100 or 200 people on your email list, unless you're already well known in your community for this particular work. Question #6: How many people were you expecting or hoping for? (Maybe it wasn't a realistic expectation yet!) When deciding whether to start with a 1:1 program or a group program, figure out what level of risk you're comfortable with. Starting with a replicable, structured 1:1 program beyond private practice is a GREAT option. Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/162

Welcome back to Therapy Chat! In this week's episode, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C resumes part two of her interview with Saj Razvi, LPC, a clinician and director of education for the Psychedelic Somatic Institute. Listen in for a fascinating discussion on how psychedelics can help us go deeper in the process of healing trauma. Saj explains how psychedelics help us access different states of consciousness and why this matters in therapy for complex trauma. He explains the various models of psychedelic-assisted trauma therapy and how Psychedelic Somatic Institute teaches therapists to legally provide psychotherapy to clients using psychedelic medicine in private practice settings, and how this contributes to greater access to these healing medicines than has been available previously. In my book Sell From Love I do a deep dive into the five protector strategies we use when we feel fear, uncertainty, doubt, guilt or the pressure to meet expectations. The 5 protector strategies are perfection, pleasing, proving, performance and punishment. I've fallen prey to these more often than I'd like to talk about, and overtime have learned what I need to pay attention to and the triggers that activate one of these protection strategies. It's made it easier to manage and even avoid because I know whenever I do something outside my comfort zone, inadvertently I can evoke a need to prove, perform and please. My guest today, Nancy Smith is a licensed Professional Counselor with eleven years in private practice and has spent over two decades working as a counselor and coach. She is an expert in High Functioning Anxiety where she helps successful, driven, type A professionals see through their perfectionism, people-pleasing, and tendency to compare themselves to others as a manifestation of their high functioning anxiety. In this episode Nancy enlightens us on what the difference is between trusting ourselves and being loyal to ourselves like we would to others. You may not always trust or believe in yourself in that moment however as you move forward to that goal, task or conversation. However when you approach it with a loyalty towards yourself where you are kind and compassionate to yourself no matter what the outcome is - your presence, power and leadership are transformed. Nancy gives us a way forward a simple 3 step process on how to overcome the tendencies to please, compare and be perfect and manage the voices going on in our head so you can go out there use your brilliant difference to make a meaningful impact to your clients and company. I can't wait for you to listen to this episode and get inspired to be as loyal to yourself as you are to others Nancy Smith shows us her way. For years, the month of December was my month of debauchery. My BFF (the voice of false self-compassion) ran the show. After months of being told what I “should” do by my Monger in December, I could throw all the rules out the window. December was the one month out of the year that I gave myself permission to not listen to the shaming voice of the Monger: I gave myself the free pass of December because I knew come January, my Monger would drop the hammer and criticize me into submission. I believed, on January 1st (well, 2nd really because on the 1st, I was still recovering from all the December merriment), I would magically become a new person. Someone who loved vegetables and hated sugar, desired to work out every day, easily abstained from drinking, and uber-productive. I am sure you could guess how that went. Long story short, come mid-January, my Monger had a field day with all the ways I was failing. This all-or-nothing thinking ran my life for years---decades really. But something changed, thanks to the practice of self-loyalty. December isn’t a magical month of no consequences anymore. Instead, I have days where I overeat sugar and drink too much caffeine and days where I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. And my worthiness isn’t linked to any of it. Whether I eat five sugar cookies or five carrots, I am still me: broken, imperfect, smart, funny, overly-sensitive, loyal Nancy Jane Smith. But the idea of change and resolutions still intrigues me. So on this episode, I am bringing back my podcast producer Sean McMullin. You might remember him from episode 155 and episode 161 where we discussed meditation and mindfulness. This is part one of this conversation and I’m so excited for you to hear it. Part two will be released next week! It's just you and me for this episode. I've been watching you, and I see where you're getting stuck in your business. You start out wanting to make a bigger impact and wanting to work in more creative ways. You feel drawn to expanding. You're scared. And you're excited. You start taking action. Then you run into obstacles from outside and also inside. Here are a few of the places I see you getting the MOST stuck and what I see you doing to get through that stuckness: The quitting trap. You take any little sign that this isn't a good idea. You walk away, or at least consider walking away. Examples of what you experience that makes you want to give up: Observing a colleague in your niche Running into a tech issue you don't know how to solve Nancy Jane Smith, author of The Happier Approach explains that our inner Fake BFF encourages us to quit. The way through this trap: Commit to your idea completely for a designated time. Set a date when you'll reconsider this, but commit to it until then. Don't allow yourself to waste time on quitting and restarting until you've followed through. The vagueness trap. You aren't willing to get specific enough about your niche, about who YOU are, or about how you work. Examples of when you get vague: You start clarifying your niche, then you remember people you've helped who fit outside that niche...and you try to serve everyone. You start getting specific about how you work, then you meet someone who doesn't like that way of working...and you try to please everyone. The way through this trap: Allow yourself to be uncomfortable with taking a stand for your specific right fit participant, and for YOUR way of working. Allow discomfort when people don't like it. I'm not for everyone. I'm willing to get specific about who I am and who I'm for and how I work. Some people walk away, and the gift is getting to reach the people I'm meant to work with. The planning trap. You get stuck in planning, researching, and creating behind the scenes. Examples of how you over-prepare: You build an ENTIRE course in private before getting feedback. You take 80 courses and listen to 100 podcasts on marketing before you actually get your thing out there. You talk to lots of friends and family members trying to get their approval of your idea before you start talking to potential collaborators or participants. The way through this trap: Allow imperfection. Get your idea out there before it's ready. Be honest about what you don't know. Don't insist on bringing certainty. Don't sell yourself short as you are right now. You will improve your offer through every iteration. Talk to the people who need what you do and talk to the people who also serve who you want to serve. Build collaboration and openness into the DNA of your business. If you're ready to create your pilot program and make a bigger impact with your work, join me for Create Your Program. I've designed this experience to help you NOT get stuck in any of these ways. Be a boss. Hustle hard. Love yourself. Make it happen. You decide the outcome. Do these phrases and mantras sound familiar? Usually, these sayings are used in the self-help world to boost your confidence both in life and work. The self-help industry makes us believe that we can make anything happen—but what if these mantras we hear repeated in the self-help industry actually make you feel worse? Enter High Functioning Anxiety. High Functioning Anxiety—HFA for short—is when you experience anxiety but instead of freezing you up from making progress, it actually propels you forward. While this might sound like an efficient way to meet or exceed your goals, it can also lead to over-functioning, perfectionism, self-doubt, and the false belief that endless worry somehow contributes to our success. On today’s episode, I’m talking with Nancy Jane Smith, an author, counselor, and therapeutic coach all about high functioning anxiety. Nancy has a Masters Degree in Higher Education and in Community Counseling from the University of Dayton. Nancy is also a licensed professional counselor and coach specializing in high functioning anxiety with 13 years in private practice and has spent over 20+ years working as a counselor and coach. I want to talk about when an investment seems like a pretty straightforward payoff—but taking advantage of that opportunity might conflict with your values. Today, I’m talking with two guests, Nancy Jane Smith and Bonnie Gillespie, about their thought processes behind making some big business decisions. - What if the ROI could be great, but it conflicts with your values? - Why Nancy decided to fully pull her business activities out of Facebook and Instagram—and why they were at odds with her personal values - What Nancy’s noticed in her business since leaving social media and how she’s grown her email list without the help of Instagram - How Bonnie uses her Facebook account strictly for business (and how she’s set it up that way) - The strategy behind Bonnie’s Facebook ads and why she prefers Instagram and Facebook to other social media or professional platforms

We all know those people that are always on the go: they never seem to rest, they are always busy doing something and they seem to accomplish so much. Perhaps you are one of those people! But did you know that this could also be a sign of high-functioning anxiety? In this podcast, I speak to therapist and licensed counselor Nancy Jane Smith about the signs and symptoms of high-functioning anxiety and how to overcome it, as well as how to deal with perfectionism, people-pleasing and avoid burnout. High functioning anxiety is a form of anxiety that you won’t get diagnosed with, but it is similar to generalized anxiety, and also involves gastro symptoms, headaches, panic attacks, racing thoughts and so on. It is essentially a way of coping that pushes you harder and faster, which often leads to perfectionism, people-pleasing and burnout. On the outside everything may look great, but, on the inside, everything is falling apart, which is why high functioning anxiety is so hard to recognize. In fact, a lot of people aren’t aware that you don’t have to live with this kind of “hustle, hustle, hustle” mentality this because they do not share how they feel with the people in their lives. I shared this blog post a few months ago about me sitting on my couch in the full sunshine feeling so calm and peaceful, only to be interrupted by this gross sewerage smell. I wanted to get all irritated, frustrated and angry about it. Quickly my mood and emotional response was shifting from calm and peaceful to cranky. I realised that I could have both. I could feel a bit frustrated and also still maintain that sense of peacefulness. I couldn’t not feel happy sitting in the sun, and yet there was still some discomfort. In this episode I share 5 strategies for holding all the emotions – the positive and the negative – at the same time. Our emotions are how we experience our life. The more we can welcome in all of them the fuller our lives become. And I know that’s what you want for yourself. It’s also a topic Nancy Jane Smith and I dive into in more detail on her podcast The Happier Approach. Look out for the episode later this month. And in the meantime come sign up for my emails to get all the extra details (I promise my emails will make you feel good). >>> www.thedaisypatch.co.uk/weekly.

I started learning about high-functioning anxiety from our guest today, Nancy Jane Smith. The way Nancy described anxiety was nothing like what I thought of anxiety to be... but was everything about my experience of the world. I've shared on the podcast before that only recently did I realize I was living with chronic anxiety. I had always identified as dealing with chronic depression and didn't recognize my normal-for-me mental state was one of high anxiety. But the more I've learned from Nancy, the more I've learned about my own brand of anxiety. Nancy is an expert in High Functioning Anxiety. Nancy is trained as a licensed professional counselor and therapeutic coach. She's the author of The Happier Approach book and the host of The Happier Approach podcast. And, she lives every day with high functioning anxiety. People with high functioning anxiety respond to anxiety by over-performing, by showing up to do all the things, by trying to be so good that nothing bad can happen. That's pretty much me in a nutshell. And it's absolutely how I started off this whole crisis. I figured that I could perform my way into sanity and certainty. Well, listener, I could not. And neither can you. Now, Nancy and I recorded this interview before the cancelled events, the lockdowns, and the economic uncertainty. So we don't talk about this collective experience explicitly. But if you listen between the lines, you'll hear it. It's there. We might not have known it was coming yet but everything we talk about applies to this unique period of time because high functioning anxiety is so dang predictable. In this interview, Nancy and I talk about how she thrives with high functioning anxiety as a business owner, how she's structured her business to support her with this challenge, and who she relies on for the support she needs. Whether high functioning anxiety is your normal to or whether you're listening as someone who is interested in the many ways we find what works for our unique situations, I think this episode will be really enlightening. The post EP 280: Thriving With High Functioning Anxiety With The Happier Approach Host Nancy Smith appeared first on What Works.
I deal with a lot of anxiety. Sometimes people don't know that because I usually appear calm. And I tend to get a lot done. I cope with my anxiety BY getting things done. But my anxiety isn't only helpful. It's also kind of nasty. I have an inner critic that speaks up when I'm anxious, and I don't like that. It hurts. Still, me and anxiety are such old friends, and we've gotten so much done together. My productivity is fueled by my anxiety. How am I gonna give that up? Who would I be without anxiety? would I get anything done? The work of Nancy Jane Smith has really helped me step out of this binary way of thinking about my anxiety and my productivity. When I recorded this interview, I had just finished her book The Happier Approach. It's been a couple months now, I'm still using her concepts regularly, and they're helping. In fact the pandemic classification and shelter in place happened after we recorded this. So anxiety much? Yes! I'm glad to have read this book. I appreciate how she shares her OWN journey with anxiety in this interview. You'll also hear a lot about how she developed her unique message about high functioning anxiety and is building her company around that unique message. Here's some of what we talked about: Her realization that she wasn't using the tools she was teaching (and how she changed them) Why starting and running your own business WILL bring up anxiety How losing her father led to clarity about her unique message Pivoting to working with "High Functioning Anxiety" How she rebooted her podcast, stepping up the quality and the focus Struggling with her own anxiety as she goes into the next stage of her business How she increases her productivity using Voxer Setting her schedule in a way that works best for her energy Using the Pomodoro Technique for time management Working through her blocks about getting paid well for providing what comes easily to her Show notes at http://rebeltherapist.me/podcast/123
Sometimes, the most difficult issues to work on are the ones that are in our blind spots. The ones that are masked by external factors or achievements that make us believe that we’re ok….when we aren’t. This week, we’re talking about one of those potential blind spots: high-functioning anxiety. This week we’re speaking with Nancy Jane Smith. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with eleven years in private practice and has spent 20+ years working as a counselor/coach. She has written three books on living happier, most notably The Happier Approach: Be Kind to Yourself, Feel Happier and Still Accomplish Your Goals. Much of Nancy’s work involves working with people who have high-functioning anxiety, which is an incredibly sneaky form of anxiety, and it’s not what you think. In this episode, you’ll learn: What high-functioning anxiety is. HINT: It’s not what you think! The role that achievement can play in masking it for so many of us. The ways in which high-functioning anxiety can cause problems in our lives And ways we can start to deal with it The end of this episode is jam-packed with actionable steps that you can take to begin quieting your mind (and still achieve your goals). You won’t want to miss it. As someone who resonated with so many of the characteristics Nancy shared in this episode, I’m so excited to share this information with all of you. I hope it helps. Nancy describes herself as a wife, daughter, sister, friend and “mom” to three furry creatures – saying she loves her job and can’t believe she gets to make a living from helping people live more calm, present lives. She spent lots of her life wondering if she really fit in because she was always doing things “differently” and never gave herself much of a break for doing so. After her Dad passed away she started embracing this “rebellion” more. Now a license counsellor, trainer and writer who supports people experiencing High Functioning Anxiety to live a happier life. We talk about how being a human can be messy at times, our inner critics (and what to do with them), and how embracing her “rebellion” made Nancy much more intentional (and happier) in her life. For more details see shownotes at www.thedaisypatch.co.uk/podcast.

Today, I talked with Ashley Gartland and Nancy Jane Smith about how they use Voxer to communicate with their clients. Primarily a voice messaging app, Voxer allows them to replace both email and in-person meetings, helping them save time and streamline the way their clients receive value. The key takeaways: - Using Voxer in managing and minimizing client meetings - Using Voxer in a way that the technology doesn’t become a distraction - Putting in place boundaries and processes so clients know what to expect - The challenges of transitioning from a typical client meeting structure - The impact of the new approach on operational capacity

In this week’s episode we talk to Nancy Jane Smith about her new book, “The Happier Approach” where we talk about quieting negative self-talk, or our “mongor” as she calls it. Nancy gives us tools on how to pull out of a situation where our negative self-talk is crowding out all other noise. We talk about how we dislike the phrases “love yourself” and “be grateful” and what we can say instead. We talk about busyness as a distraction from facing our feelings...you’ll hear me saying a lot of “ooh” and “ahh” in this one because the things Nancy say are just so true and inspiring and empowering and I hope you feel the same. Today I’m thrilled to welcome my friend and newly published author, Nancy Jane Smith, to the Beyond PRO Podcast to continue our exploration around doing more brave things. Nancy and I met back in 2012 at Chris Guillebeau’s World Domination Summit in Portland, Oregon where we got to hear Brené Brown speak (and sing) live. It remains a stand-out memory of mine. Nancy’s here to help deal with your inner monger, understand why your BFF might be secretly sabotaging your success, and guide you to access your biggest fan (really important!). And she shares some personal examples of how she navigated the ups and downs of publishing and promoting her book, The Happier Approach. She’ll walk you through her three-part A.S.K. framework, which will equip you with the awareness and tools to expand your happiness and bravery. Enjoy the episode!
