How do you let go of making everything perfect when caregiving? In this episode, Rachel Mark, Lucy Bellwood and I had a conversation about caregiving. Rachel Mark is a fabrication artist for stop-motion animation and an ADHD/Creative Coach. She took care of her brother, Daniel, who was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy, and her uncle, Lou, when he was diagnosed with MAL syndrome. Lucy Bellwood is a professional Adventure Cartoonist, writer, and educator. She is taking care of her father, who has moderate stage dementia. This is part one of a two-part episode. The first part is really about letting go — letting go of perfection to be a better caregiver — letting go of expectations of your loved one — and letting go of future expectations. The next part, to follow, is all about being held within (the “self-care” episode). This episode is part of a Breathing Wind miniseries titled Caregiving Journey, hosted by Breathing Wind founder and host, Sarah Davis. The Caregiving Journey miniseries explores: How stories of other caregivers can help us feel less alone Ambiguous grief and caregiving at end of life The shifting roles of the caregiver How and why to seek self-care Joy in the caregiving journey In this ~48-minute episode, Rachel, Lucy and Sarah talk about: 03:08: Background on Rachel's virtual accountability / self employed / freelancer coffee shop turned “emotional support animal” version of a coffee shop 08:30: “It's very easy to feel isolated, even when you aren't actually isolated.” 09:17: The relationship changes when caregiving 10:31: Rachel's story of caretaking for her uncle Lou with MAL Syndrome 12:55: Lucy discussing the negotiation process with another caregiver (her mom) and how she has had to let go of perfectionism when it comes to caregiving 18:56: “And I think there's a panic around when we're taking care of someone. And the only thing we can control is how well we're administering the meds on a daily basis and how well we're making sure they're doing their physical therapy. And so we kind of start obsessing and fixating on all of this little minutiae of like he has to get his breakfast exactly at this time.” 19:32: “It's a constant reminder of all the things that we can't control.” 23:28: Rachel discusses the importance of setting boundaries in her life and how it helped with caregiving for her uncle 30:30: Lucy recalling a situation when she noticed her father's decline due to vascular dementia. 31:48: “Grief is 100% the loss of your dreams of a future together and creating new memories.” 34:08: Anticipatory grief 37:18: How Rachel dealt with the coming and going, as well as staying true to herself while caregiving 39:44: Reflections on long-distance caregiving (the “Swooping in” thing) 41:35: How to get yourself out of the mindset of task-orientation to provide better care 44:22: “And so I've been trying to recognize that the things that are good for my dad are not always the things that he enjoys the most. And there are certain things that I think crisscross both directions.” To find out more about this episode and subscribe to the newsletter, visit the show notes. Join Scott and Mark with their guest, Rachel Redleaf, as they talk about auditioning for screen acting gigs in-person and online. Rachel is an actor, a coach, and a singer best known for her roles as Mama Cass in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Beth Chapin in Atypical. Soon, she will also appear as young Alma Fillcot in the second season of Paramount's Why Women Kill, definitely a show to die for. But today, Rachel will be sharing her story, from discovering her passion for acting growing up to landing several roles on film and TV since then. Auditions Amid the Pandemic When asked about the audition process, Rachel touched on how auditioning for screen acting gigs changed since COVID began. Usually, she would go to an audition in person but only had one chance to get it right. And if she doesn't hear back from the casting director in three days, it often means she didn't get the part, which is incredibly disheartening when someone's just a novice. But now, auditions are done either via Zoom calls or pre-recorded submissions called ‘self-tapes.' As much of a hassle as it may seem, Rachel still appreciates the freedom of creativity self-tapes provide. After all, with video submissions, you can do as many takes as you want and still take time to choose which one to send in. Then again, what Rachel loves about self-tapes is that it gives her a chance to truly get in character, whether through their clothing or even props available at home. And if you are looking to get into screen acting as well, listen to today's episode of Amigospc, where Rachel Redleaf gives some advice on how to audition at the comfort of your own home. Acting Is Not All Glitz and Glamour Once you make it into the entertainment industry, most people believe it's all fame and fortune from there. Even the hosts thought the same when they asked Rachel what her life was like after appearing as Beth Chapin in Atypical. But to their surprise, Rachel's experience working for Netflix while going to college was not all glitz and glamour. At first, she too believed that her life would be better after appearing in her first screen acting gig. That, once everyone saw the show, she would make more friends. Then again, being in acting school often meant your schoolmates were also competition. After all, the acting industry is no stranger to jealousy. Hence, Rachel's life in college got all the more difficult. At Chapman University, she often got bullied for her success, often told that she only got lucky or never deserved it. But despite the animosity, Rachel kept going, landing more roles during and after college. Not only that, she now advocates against bullying, serving at Kid in the Corner as a board member. In the end, her perseverance is what brought her the fame and fortune she always deserved. About Rachel Redleaf: Rachel Redleaf grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. Here, she discovered her passion for acting and singing at Scottsdale Desert Stages and Greasepaint Theaters, starting at age 4. Since then, show choir has been her happy place, especially in her time at Horizon Highschool. Meanwhile, in 2019, Rachel earned a BFA in Screen Acting from Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. She is also an anti-bullying activist and serves on the board of Kid in the Corner. Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them. Our guests on the April 11, 2021 episode of Black Canada Talking™ were Richard Miller and Rachel Xyminis-Chen of Keep6ix. Keep6ix is a not-for-profit Toronto based organization, serving the Greater Toronto Area, that was founded in 2017 to make a meaningful difference in the lives of at risk youth from racialized communities who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Keep6ix offers various programs and services to help youth avoid going down a disempowering path towards incarceration. We also support and advocate for those who are currently incarcerated and provide post-release support so that they can overcome barriers and begin to pasitively re-build their lives within the community. Keep6ix's vision is to … – Support criminalized and racialized communities to attain positivity and break the odds. – Overcome systemic barriers to support at risk youth and those criminalized by the justice system. Keep6ix's mission is to … – Provide holistic and integrated capacity-building programs to youth involved in the justice system. – Prevent youth from going down a disempowering path by providing one-on-one mentoring, career conselling and employment skills training. – Promote healthy self-esteem in youth through core life skills counselling to help build on their communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Richard Miller is the Founder of Keep6ix and a driven community leader, dedicated to assisting underserved youth. After experiencing and witnessing misrepresentation, racism, corruption, and injustices experienced by black youth and minorities, Richard decided to establish Keep6ix. It is his passion to bring healing to individuals who have been through traumatic experiences, by ensuring resources and programming are available to prevent incarceration. Richard is an experienced and savvy entrepreneur, who believes in training and developing the next generation of young professionals. He believes that with a second chance, and the right opportunities present, our young people can thrive and become successful. As a street involved youth, Rachel saw many of her friends & partner fall into the entrapment of the criminal justice system. Supporting her partner through his federal incarceration, was the turning point for her when she experienced firsthand the struggles of supporting an incarcerated loved one. One of the tenets of the Erin Holt Health practice is you can’t skip the basics. Eating a variety of whole foods is a huge piece of this, and home cooking is one of the best ways to achieve a whole foods diet. However, a lot of folks feel overwhelmed when it comes to the kitchen, and many don’t know where to start. Today Erin sits down with Rachel Mistry, MS, RDN, to unpack the barriers to entry when it comes to navigating the kitchen. They give practical advice for one pot dishes, pantry staples, maximizing time, overcoming uncertainty, and enlisting help. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll want to tune in to get some great ideas! Rachel Mistry is a registered dietitian specializing in functional medicine. This is one of the most interesting--and rare--perspectives you will ever hear. Rachel has had a fascinating multi-dimensional career as a sex worker and is now a vegan cooking educator. Genuine, honest, clear, and thoughtful are a few of the ways I would describe this wonderful human being. Rachel is a UK-based public speaker and former sex worker. She talks openly about her experience working in the sex industry in the hope of educating people about the reality of sex work and dispelling misconceptions. After eight years in the sex industry, she has strong views about the need for clear and honest sex education. She is also the face of the vegan cooking Youtube channel, Auntie Rachel’s Chaotic Kitchen.Quotes to remember: “There’s a lot of interest to keep women suppressed physically, emotionally, sexually.” “You can’t live your life for other people, because it’s exhausting.” Takeaways:Enjoyment of work often comes from freedom to chooseWomen who take control of their sexuality are demonizedThe more comfortable we are with ourselves, the more comfortable we can be with othersSelf-deprecation in its extreme can become self-humiliationPorn is not representative of sex and looking for it often expresses a desire to get sex educationMany people use porn as a way to self-sootheSweet potatoes are extremely versatile in foodTry buying something in the grocery store you’ve never gotten before, to make cooking a fun explorationWhat you’ll learn:How Rachel got into sex work and what motivated herWhy sex work is stigmatizedHow to wear your past as your armor Why she is open about her experiencesIdeas on better sex education and porn literacyHow we can reconsider what porn addiction is Why Rachel became vegan (more than health benefits)How to go vegan if you’re a beginner or you’re intriguedMentioned on the podcast: http://racheltalksreality.com/Auntie Rachel’s Chaotic KitchenHannah Gadsby@DrDavidLey - Author. Nadine N. Bone lives, loves, and works in Paris, France. She is a "by-referral-only" web designer & "by-application-only" brand consultant who facilitates the breakthroughs her clients need to create the visuals that represent their brand. Most of these clients want to show up as leaders and thought leaders in their community. They come to Nadine because their web designer is about to fire them! Here's what we covered on the episode: How I knew who Nadine was because she worked with Rachel Luna, and how I've been a fan of Nadine's work since we connected back in 2012 Nadine talks about how male dominated the design field was when she first started in 2011 and how it was all about databases, WordPress, code and the back end of things, so she wanted to bring a more feminine side to what they were already doing and add visuals When Nadine decided she wanted to make a statement and help improve people's lives with design she turned to technology and shares there were a few courses you could take at the time to help you level up your design skills and that's when she started integrating that expertise into her practice Because Nadine does a wide variety of services in her business, she says it's important to think about a website as a product that makes your business tangible on something that is intangible, which is the internet How people are going to decide in a split second whether or not they like something, so the design needs to be more about storytelling than just fonts and colors When Nadine designs a website and starts off with the HTML, code or core parts of the website she likes to add the storytelling layer with the strategy, thinking about why people are on the website, where are they going next, etc. to help build a foundation where they keep coming back Nadine shares that when she first got started, Rachel Luna was the first person who gave her a shot; Nadine saw that she was launching a book and asked to get together because she had some ideas for it and talks about how she was able to help Rachel reach her goals After helping Rachel with her book, Nadine was on other's radar who wanted the same experience for themselves and in their business How Rachel introduced Nadine to a lot of influential people and how she ended up working with a 6 figure entrepreneurs and most recently worked with Miss Universe 2019 Nadine knows no two clients are the same, so when getting to know them she has her clients share why they do what they do, what their next challenge is, etc. and if there is consistency between what they are saying and what they are capable of doing, it's probably a good fit When working with a client, Nadine says it's your responsibility to help them decipher their priorities because sometimes as entrepreneurs we tend to take on more than we can handle Nadine shares that she always does custom proposals for clients because each project is different and because she takes clients by application only, so it's a lot of returning clients and clients that come from referrals Because Nadine does the design, development, SEO, etc. she likes to really understand her clients so she can personalize every single item on the list for them Why it never worked for Nadine to charge for calls before the proposal is because she likes to build a rapport and have a free-flowing conversation to see if they would make a good fit for each other first Nadine explains that our biggest strength as entrepreneurs is that we can fire our clients, that's why it's important we are clear on boundaries, how fast response times are and to ask them what their experience was like working with other designers so we can get a better understanding Because Nadine is more established, she likes to take time with her calls and shares she does close to an hour for sales calls because she treats them like an easy coffee conversation, where they can get to know each other Even though Nadine has a relaxed approach, she still pays attention to red flags that can come from bad attitudes, or from someone talking negatively about people they worked with on a recent project To keep things on track during a call, Nadine likes to have the clients assets available, like their website or brochures so she can go through a critique with them Nadine gives an example of a critique she did for her current clients, who are in real estate and says their brochure was using stock images of homes, so she suggested adding a more human dimension to the brochures, which they loved How Nadine used to take on up to 12 clients at a time, doing a wide range of projects but has since scaled down to taking on 2 or 3 because she just got engaged and is starting to plan the wedding When you first start as an entrepreneur or creative Nadine says the number of clients is important, but when you're more established having seasoned clients is more important and shares that she works with clients anywhere from 2 months to 3 years, depending on what they need Nadine explains that the creative process is not linear and that people get inspired in different ways — she gets inspired by music, TV shows, video games To stay current on what's going on Nadine shares that she's subscribed to the bigger websites like, Fast Company, and award design blogs Nadine wants to remind people that even though we are in a world crisis, it's important to stay in touch with your why and ask yourself the same questions you ask your clients — why did you start this business, why do you keep taking on challenges, etc. How as designers we think that the only important work we do is going to happen during our peak years but Nadine reminds us that we are creating something beyond that, we are building a legacy Nadine designed a eulogy exercise as a way to be more appreciative of everything you've accomplished and everything you've survived and shares that sometimes we get so caught up in moving forward in life and business that we forget about the kind of mark we want to make and leave behind How during these times it's especially important to sit down and think clearly about the difference you are trying to make in the world Connect with Nadine on nadinenbone.com, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest — email her and reach out to say hello Links mentioned: Nadine's Website Fast Company Connect with Nadine on Facebook Connect with Nadine on Instagram Connect with Nadine on Pinterest Like what you heard? We are on Day 4 of Nashville Week! This episode we are thrilled to be joined by another Nashville-based designer, Rachel Halvorson, of Rachel Halvorson Designs. Rachel found big success at a young age gracing the cover of Garden & Gun and she’s also been featured in LUX, Traditional Home, Southern Living and Better Homes & Gardens. Her work is incredibly varied; from farmhouse to contemporary to mid-century modern (MCM). We talk about how her approach is unique across every project, yet she manages to keep a clean style. We also talk about her go-to elements, her love of lighting, and the highly controversial “bookcase bathtub” that we mentioned in our last episode with Stephanie Sabbe. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Rachel found herself on the cover of Garden & Gun for her custom-designed porch swings. How Rachel makes a farmhouse, a very popular Nashville look, feel more authentic and elegant. Don’t rush the process! Designing your home is a journey. Rachel shares her approach to designing her own space. The highly controversial “bookcase bathtub” picture from out last episode with Stephanie Sabbe‘s was actually Rachel’s. How she came up with it and why she got hate mail on it. One of the most fascinating parts of design for Rachel is interpreting what people love and how they want to live, then incorporating that into her design. She likes people to think of their home as a time capsule. Bookshelves are a particular challenge for Rachel mostly because other people ask her to pick out their books! Are people actually reading books anymore or just decorating with them? “Tammywood” was an MCM project Rachel did for two members of the Little Big band. It was every bit as eclectic as her client; a kind of Hollywood glamour meets Bohemian. More than ever with people being at home, they want their homes to reflect them and their style. Rachel’s go-to elements are anything that has patina or is aged to give a house a sense of history. In terms of window treatments, she goes for lightweight to bring the outside in. Rachel likes to use texture, rather than additional pieces, to add layers and a statement to a room. Rachel is a fan of mismatching and adding in small vintage pieces to give a space character and make it feel “lived in”. Beds are the hardest part of her job; while room-planning and lighting are the easiest. Rachel uses things like sconces and lamps to create soft, flattering lighting; partially inspired by her grandmother. Mentioned In This Episode: Rachel Halvorson Designs Rachel Halvorson on Instagram Decorating Dilemma Hi Sarah, This is a very cute room! The first thing Rachel always does in a project is paint and lighting. We would pull the dark blue color from that rug (and push that rug under your sofa a bit!) and paint around the fireplace and even the built-ins in a semi-gloss. We would even consider painting the shutters that same color…even the trim! There is a lot of attention on the TV, so we would suggest buying a Samsung Frame. Then when it’s off, it acts as a piece of art. For the bookshelves? Go get more books! Old leather books from a used bookstore could be really nice. If there is an outlet by the bookshelves, little lamps on either side would be a great addition. How about those teeny lamps you already have on your acrylic table? Then add one single larger lamp on that table. Maybe add some floor lamps and some sconces on the panel wall. You do need more furniture. You could fit two chairs; stay away from matching chairs but two in a neutral fabric would be nice. Toss some throw pillows with maybe the same dark blue and/ or the red brick. A small chair by the fireplace would be very cozy and help round out the room. Another side table on the side of that sofa will also work. For window coverings definitely go for some lightweight or sheer curtains. If that’s a working fireplace, put some wood in it and use it. If not, some pretty birchwood or fireballs for a nice ambience.

As many of you know, my daughters have been competing in pageants for quite some time now and have learned so many valuable life lessons and skills throughout their time at these events. However, when they first came to me with the idea to enroll, I was hesitant, to say the least. All I really knew about the pageant circuit was from what I had seen on those reality shows, which wasn’t exactly the ideal picture I wanted to have going in, especially as a Mother. After eventually deciding to embrace their interests and immerse them in this new world, I got the opportunity to meet so many wonderful and talented people through pageantry. Joining me today is one such individual, Rachel Bailey! Rachel is a Director of Coaching at ‘Genius Unlocked Coaching Institute’, former Athletic Figure Skating Coach, and crowned winner of multiple pageants across the country. Through competing, she has gained self-confidence, reassurance, and guidance in her life path and never thought pageantry was something that would one day help her overcome so many insecurities. In this episode, we discuss how Rachel became involved in pageantry, how she has taken ‘S.M.A.R.T’ goals a step further in her coaching sessions, and why practicing gratitude is so vital to our own personal growth. Self Publishing School : Learn How To Write A Book And Grow Your Business
Joining me today is Dave Hollis, author of #1 New York Times Best-Selling author and top motivational speaker, along with his wife, Rachel Hollis, to build their company. The Hollis Company exists to arm people with the tools to make positive and lasting change. They implement their lifestyle by creating media, products, inspiration, and community for a better version of their business. Founded by #1 New York Times Best-Selling author and top motivational speaker, Rachel Hollis has expanded from a small lifestyle blog to an inspirational powerhouse. Dave tells the story of scaling his business while he was in the process of building his own business, growing from four to 40 employees in one year. At first, he didn't want to publish his book; however, his wife Rachel decided to move forward with publishing. Now, with over four million copies sold and growing business, he is happy his wife didn't listen to him. He reflected on his business and his personal life, "Is there the possibility that in unpacking some of my own struggle in talking honestly about where I've been but also the type of tools that I've applied to become a better version of myself as a dad and husband, that it might afford someone seeing themselves in my story the opportunity to get out of their own way?" From this start, his writing journey began. He knew he needed to be honest about his struggle, and Dave found talking honestly about his challenges was the hardest part of writing his book. "As part of the PR for Disney, I would talk about how great things were. As someone who was a Spin Doctor of sorts, I had become a Spin Doctor in my personal life as well as professional life. The idea of owning all of the details and putting them all onto paper was hard." Listen in to find out how Dave's book became therapy for him, why it's hard to tell stories of people that are critical of your work, and how he has pivoted his book launch with COVID. Learn why Dave had to show up differently because of the pandemic, his thought process on delivering his book, and how their giving into their community has resulted in over 300 book reviews for his latest book.
