RS399 - Why hitting your goals never feels like enough

You've hit milestones that once felt huge - and somehow, each time you got there, the feeling you were chasing had already moved on to the next thing. Anna Lundberg explores why hitting your goals never feels like enough, what's actually driving the pattern, and the slower work that changes it. Key takeaways: The milestone treadmill is real - and almost universal. This pattern runs through nearly every established independent Anna has worked with. The arrival keeps not quite arriving, across very different businesses and very different definitions of success. Milestones are solving for a feeling. The implicit deal - once I hit X, I'll feel Y - doesn't pay out, because the feeling doesn't come from the achievement. It comes from somewhere more internal, and slower. The goalpost moves because of a belief, not a lack of evidence. The question running underneath every milestone ("I'm legitimate, I belong here, I'm enough") predates the business. Stacking more proof doesn't resolve a belief. Plateaus are part of the pattern - and not what they feel like from inside. They're usually where the real integration work happens, not where everything stalls. The work that shifts the pattern is slow and usually needs outside support. Self-awareness helps you describe it. Getting outside of it is a different thing. Read more about Atelier, Anna's one-to-one coaching, at onestepoutside.com/atelier.

You scroll LinkedIn and wonder why everyone else seems to have it together. In this episode, Anna Lundberg pulls back the curtain on the gap between the polished public version and the private reality - and why finding a room where you don't have to perform changes everything. The performance habit is imported from corporate - We left the office politics behind, or so we thought. Anna explains how the habit of managing impressions follows solopreneurs out of corporate and simply finds a new audience. Everyone is editing, not lying - The sold-out workshop, the confident pricing post, the clear niche: Anna shares what people actually tell her behind the scenes, and why the gap between that and the public version is wider than you'd think. The real cost is loneliness - The exhaustion isn't from the performance itself. It's from having nowhere to put the real picture - not with clients, not with family, not with peers who are still in corporate. More strategy doesn't fix this - What actually helps is a room with a different agreement: you do not have to perform here. Anna explains what that looks and sounds like in practice. How to spot genuine peer spaces versus sophisticated performance - Small, trust-built, same-stage: the conditions that make honest conversation actually possible. You know the email you should send. The price you should charge. The post you've been sitting on for two weeks. Anna Lundberg goes one layer underneath the to-do list to look at the beliefs - formed long before you started your business - that are quietly running the show. Success scripts aren't discipline failures. When you know exactly what to do and still don't do it, the problem almost certainly isn't a productivity system. It's a belief that's been running quietly in the background since school, a first job, or the corporate culture you came from. Selling feels icky because of the story, not the act. If you believe selling is pushy or sleazy, no script or sales training will help. The belief filters through everything - the energy you bring, the words you choose, whether you hit send at all. The imagined audience is mostly fictional. The old colleagues you're worried about judging your LinkedIn posts? Most of them aren't watching. And the ones who are, are probably curious - or a little envious. Naming the script is the first step. Once you can see the belief clearly - where it came from, whether it still serves you - you have a choice about it. Still not easy, but it is a choice. You probably can't spot your own scripts alone. You're too close to them. Which is exactly why the people around you matter - and why those people need to be willing to name what they see. Plenty of advice. Plenty of experts. And still that nagging sense of figuring it all out alone. In this episode, Anna Lundberg unpacks the peer gap - why the advice you're getting often doesn't fit, and what to look for instead when you're building a business on your own terms. Key Takeaways Most advice is calibrated for someone else's model. Whether it comes from beginners, mega-influencers, or training company founders, well-meaning advice is shaped by their context, not yours. Old strategies don't always apply now. Facebook challenges, automated webinars - what worked five or 10 years ago has shifted, and AI is reshaping things again. Even good advice can be out of date. When you're building something deliberately different, the blueprint doesn't exist. That's the whole point of defining success on your own terms - but it means there's no one ahead of you on your exact path. You don't need someone who's done it identically. You need peers close enough that the advice maps, plus someone to help facilitate the conversation and ask the right questions. The right room is hard to find by accident. A small, consistent group of people who've chosen their own version of success will respect yours - and that's worth more than another course or mastermind. If today's episode resonated, Off Script is the community Anna built for established independents who want a small, consistent room of peers who've made the same kind of choice. What if success meant living authentically rather than chasing the next milestone? Anna Lundberg sits down with Nick Whitnell - coach, writer, and host of nature-based gatherings - to explore how he re-engineered his work and life around values, self-compassion, and real human connection, all while still paying the bills and putting the bins out. Key Takeaways Success as authenticity, not achievement: Nick shares how he moved from measuring success by salary and status to defining it as living truthfully and treating himself and others with compassion. Re-engineering income and lifestyle: Instead of scaling up to match a growing salary, Nick worked backwards - asking what he actually needed to live well, and building his work around that. The fringe business model: Coaching, nature-based gatherings, monthly events at Patch in Bournemouth, and a weekly newsletter - Nick refuses to fit into a neat marketing box, and explains why that's a deliberate choice. Building trust through depth, not performance: Why consistency, credibility, and showing up as yourself beats algorithm-chasing every time, even if growth is slower. Working with the parts of you that hold you back: Drawing on Internal Family Systems, Nick explains how procrastination and people-pleasing often have good intentions - and what happens when you stop shaming those parts. Something is shifting for solopreneurs and independent experts: the hunger for genuine human connection is growing, and it's not being satisfied by another webinar or WhatsApp group. In this episode, Anna Lundberg explores what's driving this trend, why community is a genuine competitive advantage for independent workers, and what investing in real connection can actually look like in practice. Key takeaways: Independence is not the same as isolation. There's a version of solo working that romanticises going it alone - but the most sustainable independents build deliberate communities around themselves. A trusted peer, a mastermind, a room where you can say the things you can't say elsewhere: that's not a nice-to-have, it's infrastructure. Three forces are driving the hunger for real connection. AI-generated noise is making genuine thinking and real relationships stand out more than ever. Transactional networking fatigue is real and widespread. And community - the right kind - turns out to be a genuine strategic asset, not just an emotional comfort. What "real connection" actually looks like in practice. Not grand gestures or big commitments. Anna shares the concrete things she's doing: a small quarterly supper club, monthly founder gatherings locally, and a more deliberate openness to conversations and collaborations. Permission to change with the season. The protective, time-guarded approach may have been exactly right for a previous chapter. But it's worth pausing to ask whether it's still right now - because we often keep running the same patterns long after the context has shifted. Start small and specific. One gathering. One person you keep meaning to reconnect with. One peer relationship you could invest in more deliberately. Know whether you're energised by one-to-one depth or group energy - then go from there. If you're an established independent looking for exactly that kind of room - real accountability, genuine connection, people to think out loud with - Offscript is Anna's community built for that. After two-plus years of experimenting with AI tools - switching platforms, building custom tools, and making plenty of mistakes along the way - Anna Lundberg shares what she's actually learned about using AI as a solopreneur: what it's genuinely good for, where it falls short, and why the most valuable thing you bring to your business can't be outsourced to any tool. Key takeaways Your tool choice matters - and so do the ethics behind it. Anna shares why she moved from ChatGPT to Claude, and what she considered beyond just the feature set. The thinking partner use case is the most underrated. For solopreneurs without a team to sanity-check ideas, having a daily outlet for half-formed thoughts and strategic questions is genuinely valuable - if you use it right. AI-generated content erodes the thing that makes you worth following. Your voice, your perspective, your experience - these can't be replicated, and outsourcing them is a strategic mistake, not a time-saver. There's a useful three-tier framework: use AI generously for thinking and sense-checking, carefully for drafting, and thoughtfully for research - and verify anything that matters. You don't need a strategy to start. One small experiment with a task you find tedious is enough to begin, and it puts you ahead of most people who are still sitting on the sidelines. From a senior corporate career to coaching, festivals, and a master's degree - Kelly Keating's story is about what happens when you stop letting life happen to you and start designing it deliberately. Anna Lundberg talks with the founder of Wild and Wiser about building a portfolio life after 40, navigating the financial realities of leaving a stable career, and why "enough" looks very different when your values are finally doing the driving. Key takeaways: Success on your own terms takes time to define. Kelly's shift came not from burnout or crisis, but from a gradual deepening of self-awareness through coach training, parenthood, and a late ADHD diagnosis - all of which changed what she was willing to tolerate. The try-before-you-buy approach to leaving corporate. By building her coaching practice part-time over eight years while still employed, Kelly made the leap with far less financial and psychological risk than if she'd jumped cold. The financial case for leaving is often stronger than it looks. Most people never sit down and properly do the maths. Kelly found that stripping out the "emotional spending" that comes with an unfulfilling job made the numbers far more workable. Portfolio working is a season, not a system. Between coaching clients, associate work, a master's degree, and a festival she's launching, Kelly's week looks different to most - and that's entirely the point. Freedom and flexibility aren't the same thing. Kelly is arguably working more hours than ever, but the nature of those hours - the variety, the autonomy, the alignment with her values - is what makes the difference. If Kelly's story has you thinking about your own next chapter, a good first step is a conversation. Book a free clarity call with Anna at onestepoutside.com/call.

A few years into your business, you have enough clients, enough experience, and enough reputation to be selective - and yet somehow you still end up working with people who aren't quite right, doing work that isn't quite what you want. Anna Lundberg unpacks exactly why this keeps happening and what to do about it. Key takeaways The filter problem - Your ideal client criteria was right for where you were three years ago. If your expertise and positioning have shifted but your filter hasn't, the business will keep pulling you in a direction you're trying to leave. Obligation masquerading as opportunity - A warm referral, a loyal long-term client, someone who genuinely wants to work with you. None of these are bad things. But they're not reasons to say yes to work that isn't right. The question to ask: if this came in cold from someone I didn't know, would I want it? The call is not a filter - By the time someone is on a call with you, you're already invested. Qualification needs to happen before that point - through an application form, a questionnaire, or at minimum a clear statement on your website about who this is and isn't for. Choose discomfort over resentment - Saying no has a short-term cost. Not saying no has a longer-term one. Most of us overestimate the first and systematically underestimate the second. Have the conversation earlier - If a client relationship has drifted, it only gets harder to address the longer you leave it. A simple, honest reset conversation is almost always better received than you'd expect. You set up the systems, hired the support, and made the commitments - all sensible decisions at the time. But there's a point in many established businesses where the infrastructure quietly takes over, and you find yourself reactive, stretched, and not quite sure why. Anna Lundberg walks through four common examples - team members, open calendars, content commitments, and long-term clients - and shows you how to reclaim control without blowing everything up. Key takeaways When your team sets your priorities - The person you hired to handle something can gradually start deciding what matters most in your week - without either of you noticing it's happening. The open calendar problem - An unfiltered booking link made sense in year one. Leaving it unchanged into year four means you're still making early-stage decisions in a business that has grown well beyond that point. Content commitments that outlive their purpose - Posting every day or sending a weekly email builds momentum when you're starting out. But if that commitment is now driving your week regardless of results or relevance, it's worth questioning. Long-term clients and unspoken scope - When a working relationship becomes comfortable, it can quietly expand in ways that were never agreed. You're the expert - and you still get to set the terms. Take ten minutes to get a clearer picture of what's actually driving your business right now. A few years into your business, something shifts. The model that got you here starts to feel like it's holding you back - but changing it feels far riskier than building it ever did. In this episode, Anna Lundberg unpacks exactly why redesigning an established business is harder than starting one from scratch, and what to do about it. Key takeaways Past decisions become constraints - The offers and structures that built your reputation can trap you in a model that no longer fits, even when walking away feels too risky. More at stake means more resistance - The fear of disrupting income, client commitments, and a hard-won reputation isn't irrational. But letting it freeze the redesign entirely is where the real risk lies. Identity is the hidden blocker - A few years in, the business isn't just something you do - it's become part of who you are. Real redesign requires separating your identity from your business model before you can change either. Tweaking is not redesigning - Adjusting prices, redoing the website, and shifting messaging can all feel like progress without ever touching the structural issue underneath. Start with one room, not the whole house - Pick the single change that would make the biggest difference - who you work with, what you charge, or how you deliver - and work on that before touching anything else. Voted most likely to succeed at 17, Anna Lundberg has spent years asking what that actually meant - and whether it still matters. This episode traces the quiet question so many high-achievers carry but rarely say out loud: is this it? And reframes it not as a sign that something's gone wrong, but as evidence that something's ready to shift. "Is this it?" is a signal, not a crisis - When the life or business you've worked hard to build starts to feel like friction, that's not failure. It's evidence you've outgrown something, and it's asking you to grow in a different direction. Conventional success has a hidden cost - From Elon Musk to Arianna Huffington, the pattern holds: external achievement is rarely measured against what it costs in health, relationships, and presence. Our relationship with work is a design choice, not a natural law - From Ancient Rome to hustle culture, the way we've been taught to measure success has a history - and it can be redesigned. Success changes with the seasons of your life - Each chapter calls for a different definition. Running an old script past its sell-by date isn't loyalty, it's avoidance. The third way exists - Between pushing through and blowing everything up, there's a quieter option: pausing, examining the inherited scripts, and redesigning deliberately rather than reactively. Forty percent of professionals under 35 now earn from multiple income streams - and yet most people who end up with a portfolio career stumble into it by accident rather than by design. Anna Lundberg explores what a portfolio career really is, why it's rising so fast, and how to build one with the intentional architecture it needs to be both sustainable and fulfilling. Portfolio careers have a name now - and momentum: Over 63% of UK adults already have or plan to have multiple roles, but most people arrive at a portfolio by accident rather than conscious design, which is where the overwhelm starts. There's a real difference between a portfolio and just having multiple jobs: A genuine portfolio requires a coherent umbrella, deliberate architecture, and an honest view of which strands are anchoring your income, which are building your future, and which are feeding your passion. Context switching has a cost: Moving between different client worlds and problems is cognitively demanding - the solution isn't to do less, but to structure your time and identity around the portfolio model intentionally. The identity shift matters as much as the practical structure: Introducing yourself as someone with a portfolio career - not someone who "does a bit of this and a bit of that" - changes how you show up, how you make decisions, and how others see you. An audit is the place to start: Before adding anything new, label what you already have - anchor, growth, or passion layer - and decide what needs to drop to make space. Key takeaways A restructure at work can become a reset point when you define your non-negotiables first (family, health, flexibility). Underpricing is often a confidence issue, not a competence issue — especially when you already bring decades of experience. Visibility is more sustainable (and more human) when it's rooted in contribution, relationships and conversation. Picking a lane can make it easier for the right people to find you — and trust what you're known for. If you're craving more clarity, smarter strategy, and a business that actually suits your life, this episode is tailor-made for you. Key takeaways: Brilliant Planning Starts with the Right Foundations: Setting new goals and colour-coded calendars is pointless if your underlying business model is misaligned or not delivering what you need. First, get clear on what's working, what feels heavy, and what simply isn't serving you. The Stop, Start, Continue Method: Anna advocates for the "stop, start, continue" framework—identify what to stop doing (low-ROI activities or things that drain you), what you must continue (your proven efforts), and a mindful approach to what new things you start (beware shiny-object syndrome!). Prioritise Simplicity Over Overwhelm: Avoid the trap of planning a million changes. Anna's approach focuses on a light reset—refining your core priorities and picking only one or two key shifts for the first quarter, keeping things achievable and aligned. Check Your Business Model and Message: Review where your income comes from, what's profitable, and whether your delivery modes (coaching, mentoring, speaking, etc.) align with your capacity and energy. Sharpen your messaging so it stands out in a busy marketplace. Michael Sheen is an award-winning actor. After finding his love for the stage with the West Glamorgan Youth theatre as a teenager, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He spent the 1990s making a name for himself as a stage actor, shining in the classics from Romeo and Juliet to Peer Gynt as well as in 20th century masterpieces such as Look Back in Anger and Amadeus, receiving several Olivier Award nominations along the way.A relocation to the US in the early 2000s with his then partner, the actress Kate Beckinsale, and their young daughter Lily prompted a move into films. His breakthrough came in 2003 when he portrayed Tony Blair in a Stephen Frears film called The Deal. It was the beginning of what became an unlikely specialism: morphing into real people from recent history: Kenneth Williams, David Frost, Brian Clough, Chris Tarrant, and Prince Andrew – with two more outings as Tony Blair thrown in for good measure.Michael was born in Newport, South Wales, in February 1969, the eldest of two children to Meyrick and Irene. He grew up in Port Talbot from the age of eight and considers it his hometown. His first love was football, and he was spotted as youngster by an Arsenal talent scout to play for their youth team. His parents decided against moving the family to London and he turned to acting instead and graduated from RADA in 1991.Alongside the classic dramas, his range extends to appearing in fantasy and science fiction films such as The Twilight Saga and Tron: Legacy. Michael has said that the most meaningful project to him was a modern restaging of the passion play in Port Talbot in 2011, which involved the participation of a thousand local people, because it opened his eyes to the difficulties many of them were experiencing. He has since used his own money to fund the 2019 Homeless World Cup in Cardiff and set up an organisation which supports community groups. Are you resisting structure in your business because you're craving freedom, creativity, and flexibility? In this episode, Anna Lundberg debunks the myth that structure stifles creativity and explains how the right systems actually give you more space to breathe, more focus, and more joy in your work. Tune in if you're tired of juggling everything yourself and want your business to run more smoothly - without losing the freedom you left corporate to find. Key takeaways: Structure = Freedom Loose schedules feel freeing, but lack of structure can lead to decision fatigue, inconsistent income, marketing chaos, and, eventually, burnout. Simple systems set you free by eliminating wasted energy and providing consistency. The Cost of Chaos Not having systems actually keeps you stuck—leading to sporadic visibility, inconsistent clients, and being the bottleneck in your business. Professional, reliable processes attract high-calibre clients. Simple Systems to Set Up You don't need complicated tech to start—simple, manual systems can transform your workflow. Key takeaways: The Market Has Shifted—But Opportunity Remains The economic landscape is more demanding, with budget cuts and changing priorities making it harder to attract attention. However, clients are still investing—just more selectively, and with a focus on immediate, tangible results. Three Reasons You're Not Booked Out Unclear or Uncompelling Offers: Vague, long-term, or “fluffy” messaging doesn't resonate in a risk-averse market. Offers need to address urgent, concrete business needs. Positioning That Undersells You: Many experts, especially women, downplay their expertise instead of confidently owning their experience and value. Visibility That Lacks Consistency and Focus: Sporadic or unfocused marketing often leads to getting lost in the noise. Clear, intentional pathways to your ideal clients are essential. Mission vs. Messaging: What Sells Now Lead with what your client needs—typically profit, productivity or specific outcomes—then weave in your bigger mission once you've opened the door. Anna Lundberg reveals why your true business growth might come from the quiet “lurkers” - those who never like or comment, but are listening, learning, and ready to buy when the time is right. Listen in to learn how to spot and serve these invaluable silent followers. Key takeaways: Redefining Success Metrics Vanity metrics like likes and comments often mislead—true business traction frequently happens quietly. It's more important to focus on meaningful metrics such as inbound messages and discovery calls. Who Are the Lurkers? Lurkers are thoughtful, discerning potential clients who do not engage publicly, but are your target audience. They notice your content, and when the moment is right, they get in touch quietly. Marketing with Depth Over Noise Instead of chasing trends and performative content, focus on creating consistent, quality posts that speak directly to your ideal client's real pains and desires—even if engagement appears minimal. This episode is for independent experts who want to move beyond random content and start building relationships that actually lead to business - without feeling pushy or “salesy.” Anna Lundberg shares hard-won sales insights and practical steps for converting interest into income in a way that feels authentic, human, and strategic. Key takeaways: 1. The Difference Between Marketing and Sales Marketing promotes visibility and builds your brand, but sales is about having real conversations and converting interest into action. For lasting business growth, you need both visibility and a thoughtful sales system. 2. Why 'Selling' is Actually 'Serving' Selling isn't about manipulation; it's about helping. If you believe in what you offer, guiding people to work with you is an act of service, not of pressure. Relationships (not long sales pages or viral posts) matter most—especially for high-trust services and B2B. 3. Reimagining the Traditional Sales Funnel It's no longer a simple linear path; instead, think of it as a tapestry or ecosystem, with many touchpoints (referrals, workshops, posts, conversations) leading up to a client's decision. 4. The Power of Follow-up Only a small percentage of people are ready to buy right now; regular, kind follow-up keeps you top of mind for when they are ready. Tracking conversations and continuing gentle outreach is necessary, not “pushy.” 5. Create Your Own Sales System There's no one-size-fits-all template—map out discovery, experience, and purchase stages that suit you and your clients. Consistently focus on your “momentum moves”: those daily or weekly actions that build relationships and sustain your pipeline. Do you adore your work but lately find it draining rather than energising? In this episode, Anna Lundberg explores the hidden pitfalls of passion-driven businesses - how loving what you do can still lead to burnout, and practical steps to reclaim balance and sustainability. Tune in for a refreshing perspective and actionable advice designed to help you protect your wellbeing while delivering your best work. Key Takeaways Loving Your Work Doesn't Make You Immune to Burnout: Passion is powerful, but over-delivering and poor boundaries can lead to exhaustion - even when you deeply care about your business and clients. Boundaries Are Essential for Sustainable Success: Building boundaries into your business model and daily routines is vital to prevent draining your energy and sacrificing your personal life. Revisit Your Pricing and Offers: Ensure your fees reflect both the emotional and energetic load of your services. Let go of profitable offerings if they consistently leave you depleted. Intensity Isn't Sustainable: While occasional busy periods are normal, constant overworking should not be the status quo. Design your business to support your capacity and lifestyle as it is now. Sustainable Growth Is Possible (and Necessary): You don't have to choose between ambition and wellbeing. Success can - and should -come without sacrifice, with systems that allow you to thrive long-term. Feeling drained by the very business you built to give you freedom? If your passion is starting to feel like pressure, and your business is taking more than it gives... it's time to rethink how you're growing. Inside the Business Accelerator, you'll redesign your expert business for more energy, more income, and more ease - with smarter structure, sustainable offers, and boundaries that protect your time (and your wellbeing). Are you finding that your business growth is coming at the cost of your freedom, ease, or sense of fulfilment? In this episode, Anna Lundberg shares why “more” isn't always better - especially if more clients and more revenue are leaving you stressed, overworked, or simply feeling boxed in by the business you've built. Tune in to discover practical strategies for recalibrating your business so it delivers not just profit, but also genuine freedom and satisfaction. Key Takeaways Rethink What Growth Means for YouMore revenue doesn't always equal more freedom—sometimes, it simply means more stress. Anna urges listeners to reconsider what they truly want from growth, challenging the notion that scaling up is always the best path. Sustainable Growth Over Stressful SuccessIf growth is making you feel less in control or more exhausted, it's a sign to recalibrate. Sustainable growth should energise you, not drain you. Practical Shifts for Sustainable Success Streamline and narrow your offerings to avoid overwhelm. Firm up your boundaries—know when to say no and protect your time. Fix “leaky systems” in your client onboarding, communication, and delivery to maximise efficiency and profitability. Simplify your marketing efforts to avoid burnout and ensure every action works harder for you. Quality Over QuantitySometimes, fewer (but higher quality) clients can mean more fulfilment and profit with less stress. Regularly Audit and Adjust Pause periodically to assess what's working (not just financially, but energetically), and be willing to refine your business model, pricing, and delivery accordingly. Ready to grow - without losing the freedom you left corporate for? If you're finding yourself stretched thin, constantly juggling clients, or scaling in a way that doesn't feel like success… it's time to recalibrate. Inside the Business Accelerator, you'll redesign your expert business for more revenue and more freedom - with a smarter model, sustainable offers, and clearer boundaries to grow in a way that actually works for you.
