When she and her colleague Melissa Duren Conner hit a crossroads in their careers, they decided to join forces and create their own agency, Jennifer Bett Communications (JBC). Jennifer and Melissa wanted to create an agency that approached media relations in a strategic and creative way, focusing on meaningful storytelling and more intellectual PR. Since then, JBC has helped launch some of the top names in consumer brands, including Parachute, Magic Spoon, Recess, Cuyana, Andie, Knix, July, M.Gemi, Cuup, and more just to name a few.[00:00:41] Two friends start PR agency after realizing traditional agencies were ill-equipped for the shift in media landscape.[00:08:21] PR is essential for brand launch; many options and partners available to fit any budget.[00:15:55] PR should not be an afterthought; time should be invested to ensure messaging is communicated across all platforms and that the PR partner understands the brand.[00:21:24] Positioning Ben for success in food and beverage beyond CBD.[00:23:10] Helping brands reach their goals over time with targeted press.[00:27:27] Empowering women in healthcare, particularly in fertility, is important to Melissa and the agency. Nodal is an example of a brand doing this.[00:30:23] Food & beverage division works with innovative brands in climate tech and sustainability, particularly small, independently owned brands, with increasing presence of women.[00:33:06] Passionate founders, mission-oriented brands, and innovation.[00:35:02] Innovation and fresh ideas excite people and make them want to be involved.[00:38:44] Launched affiliate division and executive speaking division, hiring experienced talent, launching brands in various industries.PR Is Essential for Brand Launches: "I can't stress the importance of PR. I think there's a lot of brands that we've talked to and they'll come to us and they're like, listen, we decided to just launch with influencer, or we're just launching with digital marketing. And they come back three months later and they're like, Shit, we needed PR."— Jennifer Bett"The Power of PR: "We firmly believe that it is the most scalable investment you can make in your brand 100%. Because the stories that are told exist in real time, all the time. It is truly something you can repurpose for paid media. It impacts how hard or easy it is to work with influencers. It makes it much easier when you want to work with other brands for strategic partnerships. It helps with investors."— Melissa ConnerShownotes powered by Castmagic Past guests & brands on DTC Pod include Gilt, PopSugar, Glossier, MadeIN, Prose, Bala, P.volve, Ritual, Bite, Oura, Levels, General Mills, Mid Day Squares, Prose, Arrae, Olipop, Ghia, Rosaluna, Form, Uncle Studios & many more.Additional episodes you might like:• #175 Ariel Vaisbort - How OLIPOP Runs Influencer, Community, & Affiliate Growth• #184 Jake Karls, Midday Squares - Turning Your Brand Into The Influencer With Content• #205 Kasey Stewart: Suckerz- - Powering Your Launch With 300 Million Organic Views• #219 JT Barnett: The TikTok Masterclass For Brands• #223 Lauren Kleinman: The PR & Affiliate Marketing Playbook• #243 Kian Golzari - Source & Develop Products Like The World's Best Brands-----Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter hereFollow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!DTCPod InstagramDTCPod TwitterDTCPod TikTokJennifer Meyer - Founder of Jennifer Bett Communications (JBC)Melissa Duren Conner - Co-Founder of Jennifer Bett Communications (JBC)Ramon Berrios - CEO of Trend.ioBlaine Bolus - Co-Founder of Seated
Brands like Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks are making some changes to their loyalty rewards programs. Also, TikTok rolls out with new safety features for teen users. Plus, Amy Grant opens up for the first time since her bike accident. And, She Made It: the inspiring story behind “Cuyana” founders Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah whose “Less Is More” approach has helped grow their company into a celebrity favorite.
Shilpa Shah is the Co-Founder of Cuyana, a fashion brand that marries luxury-level branding with premium quality apparel and accessories, offering "fewer, better things" to women at accessible price points. Shilpa spent the first part of her career designing web and mobile interfaces for Fortune 500 companies. Although she was passionate about design, it wasn't until she was pregnant with her first son that she felt empowered to do more in her life. Unsure what the right next step was, Shilpa decided to apply to business school at 32 while having a 2½-year-old at home. Good thing she did because through the process, she met her co-founder Karla and they were inspired to create an affordable luxury direct-to-consumer brand - which might sound like the norm now but they were true pioneers in this space in 2011. Today, they've grown their SF based company profitably despite taking funding of more than $30million dollars. Cuyana has been recognized as one of the most innovative companies in America and continues to have a loyal base of customers and a strong celebrity-following.We'll talk to Shilpa about building a strong brand that is largely driven by word of mouth, why the concept of work life balance is BS, and how they've navigated multiple challenges from raising money from investors to restructuring their business in the pandemic environment that we're in.In this episode, we'll talk to Shilpa about: * How Shilpa has intertwined the creative and analytical sides of her personality. [5:47]* What prompted Shilpa to go to business school at age 32 was a desire to do more. [8:09]* Balancing being the primary caretaker and the primary breadwinner. [11:52]* One of the mistakes co-founders make in selecting one another is looking for someone similar to them. [15:49]* How the direct-to-consumer concept arose from a desire to build a fashion brand. [17:37]* The value of setting clear boundaries for what you can and cannot compromise on in business. [19:59]* Focusing on supply chain and the business model in the first two years of Cuyana. [20:36]* What makes building businesses difficult is taking the time to figure out what works. [23:52]* How Shilpa came to understand the right messaging for her customers which was critical in the brand's growth. [24:4013]* Educating their customers on Cuyana's “fewer, better things” concept. [28:00]* Why staying close to your customer and seeing how they interact with your product is key. [29:54]* Fundraising in the early days and why understanding the business is the true first step. [31:27]* Hear Shilpa's analogy for sustainability in a tech company and why Cuyana's focus was always on profitability. [33:46]* Getting male investors to understand their concept during the fundraising process. [35:44]* Despite all the challenges, Shilpa and Carla never gave themselves the option of quitting. [40:39]* How Shilpa and Carla's entrepreneurship was received by their immigrant parents. [42:12]* Why it is essential – as an entrepreneur – to become comfortable with failure. [45:27]* Discover Shilpa's perspective on work-life balance – and why she thinks balance is BS. [46:33]* Shilpa's advice for female founders with families: Make sure you're solving the right problem. [50:33]* Some challenges Cuyana has faced and how Shilpa and Carla overcame them. [53:06]* Some of the key takeaways that helped propel Cuyana forward, like thinking quickly. How do you navigate the opposing forces of business and sustainability? How can you stay true to your values while profitably building and scaling a purpose-driven fashion brand that's good for people, planet, and profit? In this episode of the Crash Course Fashion podcast, Brittany Sierra talks with Cuyana co-founder Shilpa Shah about why the Cuyana's ethos of "fewer, better" is more than a marketing message, the key to scaling a profitable purpose-driven fashion brand, her thoughts or greenwashing and critics, and why Cuyana doesn't lean on sustainability when communicating with their customer.
What began as a simple home renovation project in San Marino, CA, ended in an arrest for murder. When Johnathan Sohus' body was uncovered in the backyard of the home, investigators were able to finally pin the killing on long-time con artist Christian Gerhartsreiter AKA Clark Rockafeller, Christopher Chichester, and many other aliases. But one mystery still remains, what ever happened to John's wife Linda Sohus, who is still considered missing? This week, Savannah explores the couple's tragic story that begins in 1985 and still open-ended. Savannah details the postcards supposedly sent from the couple while they were missing that were likely sent from their killer, how Christian was able to con hundreds of people, and how he was ultimately captured. The story of Amber Smith's attack is a story of survival, but her ordeal was still horrifying. This week, Savannah details how Amber was bound, beaten and left for dead at Cottonwood Glen Park, a park near where she lived. Amber didn't remember much of her attack and the case went cold for over 4 years. As luck would have it, a man named Stefan Moon was charged with a minor felony, forcing him to enter his DNA in the system. Stefan "Sam" Moon's DNA matched that of Amber's attacker, and the more chilling detail, Amber knew Sam as a friend. Love Killer Instincts but hate the ads? Katherine Waring seemingly vanished out of thin air on June 12, 2009. When an uncharacteristically large-sum check surfaced, having been signed by Katherine (who went by Kate), it started a chain of events that ultimately lead to the horrifying truth, Kate was brutally tased, beaten and drowned by people that she trusted. This week, Savannah details the many players in Kate's disappearance and killing, including Ethan Mack, someone who was like a brother to her that convinced Kate to get into the suitcase that was used to kill her, Heather Kamp, the con artist who plotted her murder in order to steal her money and belongings, and the A-team, the group of experts that did what the police had failed to do for months, solve the case and find Kate's killers. An open place to admit no one really knows what they're doing. Christina P is joined by author, YouTuber, and licensed marriage family therapist Kati Morton in this episode of WMMA. They discuss living in Austin, Texas, where they both recently moved, how trauma is defined, the ideas behind the book "The Body Keeps A Score," ways to comfort yourself, how to understand PTSD, healthy relationship development, why Christina was traumatized by leafblowers growing up, the hard work that comes with being in therapy, and why "boring is better" when it comes to dating. Christina P. wants to hear from you since she is seriously lacking in cool mom friends. If you want to share a "Pazsitzky Effect" or "Mom Hack" please call into our voicemail (213)375-5184 and let Christina know! We want to talk to as many moms across America as we can.

Robyn Warner is known by many as @aflyonmywall on Instagram, where she shares the humor of everyday life as a mom, a wife, and a business owner. She dances, she does karaoke, and laughs her heart out with her family and followers. She's also known for her self-defense tips and creating the program S.A.F.E. by Robyn to help empower women and families with self defense tools to prepare them for what we hope never happens. Robyn's passion for teaching self-defense stems from her own attack. She was just 18 years old when she was violently attacked and sexually assaulted in broad daylight during an afternoon run. She credits her survival to a few basic self-defense tools she learned when she was 12 years old. It was those tools that saved her life, and now, Robyn is determined to help others and arm them with not only the knowledge to know what to do in an attack, but also the confidence to use those tools to fight back. https://www.safebyrobyn.com/SAFECourse?r_done=1 Use code CAKE for $25 off Robyn's S.A.F.E courseSponsors:Get 10% off your first order over $150 plus free shipping when you go to Cuyana.com/BeyondTheCake and get your individual codeGet 10% off your first month by visiting BetterHelp.com/beyondcake

Dr. Smith was stalked by a man who attended her singles bible studies group. His behavior made everyone feel uncomfortable — especially when he asked the female members for rides home. Dr. Smith alerted her church Pastor, who told him he needed to join a men's only group...and the next week her car windshield was smashed during bible study. She moved hundreds of miles away, only to be confronted by her stalker on a bus near her new apartment and at the new church she was attending. Police told Dr. Smith that if she hadn't had a romantic relationship with him she could not get a restraining order, and that they wouldn't take a report until he physically harmed her. This week, Savannah examines Jennifer's tragic final moments before she was discovered murdered in her home, why Alan was the main target from early on in the investigation, and why Alan was ultimately set free in 2008, over a decade later thanks to DNA evidence. Plus, Savannah brings to light the one suspect whose DNA was found on the scene, but police have refused to release any of his information to the public. Love Killer Instincts but hate the ads? Kim is an adult webcam model who has been the target of an online stalker for years. After she received threatening and abusive messages from a viewer, she blocked him. Then he created fake screen names to get access to her shows and troll her. She eventually received an email saying she should stop webcamming immediately or she would be doxxed. Her stalker sent her mother, her mother's employer, and Kim's new employer pictures, links to her webcams, and a note telling that Kim's mother raised a prostitute. She turned to the police, who are working with her to help identify her stalker and hopefully bring her case to a close. Check Out Our Patreon:? www.patreon.com/strictlystalking?? Instagram:? Victoria was a freshman in high school when she started receiving creepy phone calls from an anonymous deep-voiced man. She thought they were prank calls until they became more sinister, with the caller saying he was going to "take" her and that he had already "touched" her. One night he called her and described the exact pajamas she was wearing at that moment. After he attempted to break in to her house, her friend urged her to tell her parents, who turned to the police. When a man chased her down on her school campus and started touching her while telling her how long he had waited to do that... she realized she actually knew her stalker very well. In this episode, hosts Parthvi & Anya bring listeners the girl boss guest we've all been waiting for. Ivellisse Morales is a social justice advocate and CEO of her own agency called Bombilla Creative. *Side note, AOC follows her on IG! They cover a lot of ground with Ivellisse including her Third Cultured Kid childhood and how her middle school experiences eventually set her up for her current passions, Corporate Social Responsibility through racial injustice initiatives. She shares a lot about how her Puerto Rican heritage shaped the way she confronted her goals and the way in which she existed in new spaces that consisted of majorly white persons. Ivellisse talks about her experience with burn-out in a job she loved and how that forced her to take a step back to figure out her next step. She built Bombilla Creative on her own, discusses how isolating it was and gives some golden entrepreneurial advice based on that experience. Listen until the end to find out what advice she would give to her younger self and how you can learn from the major mantra she leaves us with. If you're a budding entrepreneur, or feeling stuck in the corporate world and looking for some inspiration to make it on your own, this is an episode you need to listen to.
