Trigger Warning: Sexual abuse and suicidal ideation What would you do if everything you believed in turned out to be a lie? This week, Susie sits down with India Oxenberg to share her harrowing experience in the NXIVM cult, a so-called self-help group led by convicted leader Keith Raniere. India opens up about being lured into the group at 19, the manipulation and abuse she endured, and the red flags she missed along the way. She also reflects on the strength it took to escape, rebuild her life, and repair her relationship with her mother, Catherine Oxenberg, whose determination helped expose the cult. India's story isn't just one of survival—it's about reclaiming her voice, finding purpose in her pain, and helping others recognize the lies that can trap them. This compelling conversation is a powerful reminder of the strength it takes to rebuild after betrayal. Don't miss it. TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains content around self-harm and suicide and brief mention of sexual violence against children.“They tried to ‘fix' my stigmas to make me like everyone else, rather than leveraging my gifts. I said, ‘screw that, I'm gonna manage my gifts.' And I started developing my gifts and ignoring the stigma.”— Tim NelsonIn this episode of What's In Your Toolbox: An Honest Discussion on Mental Health, Bobby Koven interviews Tim Nelson about his mental health journey. This conversation is raw and authentic, and at times may be triggering to some listeners. We have noted the timestamps for the triggering content.Tim Nelson is an expert problem solver, but he wasn't always able to use his dyslexia and dyscalculia to his advantage. Tim was diagnosed in his early twenties, but through the lens of stigma. And his late diagnosis prevented him from integrating into the mainstream school system. But as a creative problem solver, Tim chose to see his diagnoses as little annoyances rather than burdens, and followed the path of his dyslexia as a gift. In his youth, Tim developed seven skills that helped him navigate his childhood through learning disabilities and other mental health challenges. The skills are creativity, coaching projects, running programs, improving people, knowing oneself, understanding interactions and defining standard work. Developing these consistent skills was key in overcoming the challenges of dyslexia and dyscalculia, and the consistency has paid off, putting Tim in charge of some of the largest projects in the world. Tim has also put his RECOVER system into practice to recuperate from life events that had a massive impact on him. RECOVER is an acronym; R is receive help, E is exhibit compliance, C is care, O is outline a schedule, V is venture out, E is establish purpose, and R is reach for the stars. This episode discusses: ✔ How dyslexia and dyscalculia impact learning and education and self-esteem✔ The seven skills Tim developed to overcome dyslexia and dyscalculia challenges✔ Tim's RECOVER acronymHighlights: 00:01 Intro02:53 Meet Tim Nelson09:10 Tim's Gifts11:33 Growing up12:48 Tim's seven skills15:08 Diagnosing dyslexia and dyscalculia20:55 Leveraging gifts22:57 Bipolar diagnosis and mania23:52 TRIGGER WARNING: Self-harm and suicide26:42 Tim's RECOVER acronym28:30 TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual violence towards children30:59 Tim's Amazing Support Team33:28 TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide35:18 Tim's advice to othersAbout Guest:Tim Nelson is an expert problem solving coach, change agent, global diversity and inclusion ambassador and author and inventor.Links:Connect with Tim:LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-nelson-0270526Website https://onefivefifty.com/To get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly: Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.org Follow us on Instagram: @living.jewishly Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw or send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.org. For this week, we have the impressive Celia Sandhya Daniels from India to talk about their career and passion to educate, empower, and advocate for gender-expansive individuals in the community and corporate world. This is PART one of a three-part piece.Trigger Warning: Sexual assault, Child abuse, Violence, Transphobia, Homophobia, Gender Dysphoria, Suicidal ideationWe dive into Celia's life in five dimensions, Dreaming, Doubt, Denial, Discovery, and Destiny. Firstly, Celia as a child dreamt to be a girl. However, as she was growing up the fear of being bullied forced them to hide their identity. Celia reveals the sexual abuse she encountered and the shame, fear, and trauma she faced alone. We learn of Celia's doubts about her being a trans-lesbian and violence in 9th grade that is commonly practiced in India. This traumatic experience led Celia to struggle with living and in denial of her existence. Once married, Celia had assumed that being with a wife would somehow "fix" her. Celia eventually began attending therapy where there was a lack of knowledge on transgender identity. Later she began to discover herself while struggling with gender dysphoria. Today, she is open with her family and finds acceptance. Lastly, Celia shares her destiny, which is to advocate and educate across the world, for an LGBTQIA+ community that holds itself with pride and dignity, where one is valued and has credibility in what they do and speak. The conversation turns to healing from trauma. Celia mentions how the film “Spotlight” and Amita's project “Mirror Memoirs” of LGBTQ survivors of color in the movement to end child sexual abuse gave them the courage to speak out. In our next episode, Celia will share her success in a long-lasting 26-year marriage. ***TRIGGER WARNING**** Sexual harassment, eating disorders, bullying, hazing First act actor Emily Nixon chats with me this week. Emily always wanted to be an actor and was able to make her dreams come true as today she's working as an actor, writer and director, with experience on screen with TV shows such as Umbrella Academy. Emily and I take a deep dive into what theatre school was like for her. She experienced harassment, bullying and a lot of hypercritical feedback from the teachers and saw many of her fellow students cut from the programme from one year to the next. We discuss the parallels between theatre school and medical school and whether theatre school is designed to prepare actors for the harsh rejections that are part of the industry. We then talk about the many benefits of doing background work and Emily tells me how she tries to appreciate every moment on set, regardless of whether she's on camera or working behind the scenes. At the end of the episode, she shares some really helpful advice that will give any aspiring actor a little bit of hope! *SKIP THE FIRST 18 MINS IF YOU WANT TO GET RIGHT INTO THE TESTIMONY & YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED IN CAMILLE'S EPIC DAY OF HEARSAY OBJECTIONS **TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual abuse, domestic violence and physical absue are discussed in graphic detail so if that's not something you want to hear about (and believe me it made me feel physically ill to listen to her say it myself) then maybe skip this one and join us again next time. I told everyone on Twitter i would be stanning Camille Vasquez this week and I am a woman of my word. The first 18 minutes of the episode are devoted to Camille Vasquez, Johnny's bad ass attorney who will be doing the cross examination of Amber Heard. We listen to her insanely effective objections & we thoroughly enjoy how much they pissed off Amber Heard. Cross examination is going to be lit with Camille at the wheel & we can't wait. I'll explain to you some of the objections and what their legal reasoning for using them is. If you don't want to hear Camille's objection compilation & learn about the different objections skip to 18 minutes. We're talking about Amber Heard's heinous and graphically detailed description of sexual abuse allegations during her second day of direct examination. There is so much to unpack and dissect here guys I actually ran out of time to get you my full analysis & I have a lot more to say which I'll get to in our next episode. Don't worry we have a week before the next trial day. We get through the horrific sexual abuse allegations & I try not to scream about the absurdity of it all. There's a lot of suspect things said today that need to be discussed at length….. We get more into things next episode and break down some of the problems with her allegations and her story. Things just aren't adding up for Amber. As an update, Court is not in session this week because Judge Penney had a prior engagement. Proceedings resume a week from the day of this episode (5/16) and by then we will be all up to date and done with our legal analysis of the case up until this point - and then we get the cross-examination which will be epic and you wont want to miss, We will definitely have a couple of episodes during this week off from trial to discuss some of my insight as a lawyer, how the trial will be different going forward, and I'm going to answer some of the questions I've gotten from listeners so please stay tuned for that! Most people don't understand what it's like to be a survivor of abuse. If you are most people please consider checking out the podcast “Narcissist Apocalypse” & you'll hear first hand the stories of abuse survivors. This week they have a male survivor speaking his truth on the show. That is an issue that is very central to the discussion around this case so I think if you're listening to my show you would and should appreciate the importance of hearing the stories of all abuse survivors including men. Dr. Vishal Kumar talks with special guest Dante D. King about some of the historical origins of health inequities, and persistent biases we see in our healthcare settings today. *Trigger Warning: Sexual assault is mentioned from 9:29-17:30. --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/selDZM --- SHOW NOTES In this episode, guest host Dr. Vishal Kumar interviews educator and author Dante King about America's history of black subjugation and persistent biases in our healthcare settings today. First, Mr. King gives examples of historical case law and statutes that disenfranchised African Americans and placed them in derogatory and undignified positions. Some examples include the Fugitive Slave Act (1850), as well as various state laws that sought to claim ownership over black people and make sexually assault of black women legally permissible. A key court decision, Geroge v. State (1872) had ruled that rape was only considered a crime when committed against white women. We follow this thread of dehumanization of black women through modern day medicine, in which the maternal mortality rate reflects significantly higher rates in African American women. Dr. Kumar highlights recent studies that show the presence of implicit bias, as well as its intergenerational effects. He notes that privilege involves more than just perks and benefits; it encompasses the lack of barriers and obstacles in society. He also encourages listeners to realize that healthcare providers deny the benefit of the doubt to certain populations, which results in harmful under-intervention or over-intervention. --- RESOURCES Dante King Website: https://www.danteking.com/ Dante King Twitter: https://twitter.com/danteking2020 The 400 Year Holocaust: https://www.amazon.com/400-Year-Holocaust-Americas-Psychopathic-Sociopathic-ebook/dp/B09Q9C43Z9 The Human Doctor Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-human-doctor/id1571000871 Yale Preschool Study: https://medicine.yale.edu/childstudy/zigler/publications/Preschool Implicit Bias Policy Brief_final_9_26_276766_5379_v1.pdf Race and Intergenerational Economic Opportunity Study: http://www.equality-of-opportunity.org/assets/documents/race_paper.pdf

*** TRIGGER WARNING: Sexual abuse, Sex trafficking, Labor trafficking, Cult, Suicide ***Amanda shares her story, starting when she was just a little girl being raised in what she described as an ultraconservative Christian cult. She was groomed from the beginning to not say no to a man and to be a homemaker. She was molested and sexually assaulted, with no idea how to deal with it at such an early age that it turned into rage. After a variety of events in her life, including sex trafficking, and a terrible car accident, Amanda became extremely suicidal, and still felt like her abuser was the only option for survival. Amanda bought a plane ticket and a puppy and flew back home, telling him where she was and waiting for him to come to find her. He never did, that's when she realized she needed more change. Amanda read books, listened to podcasts, and she started healing. She got involved with Selah Freedom, an organization for sex trafficking, working with them for several years. Then, she fully understood that she had been involved in sex trafficking as well. She started going to therapy and has been going ever since. Amanda is now in a healthy relationship, happily married, and trying for children. She has also suffered from fertility issues due to all the abuse she encountered, yet still having a positive outlook on it all. She has helped many get out of abuse and trafficking with her own experiences. About Amanda: Amanda Catarzi is a survivor. In her past she has worked for Selah Freedom, helping others find their voice and use it effectively, allowing them to heal. She is inspiring to many, using her trauma and experiences as a learning tool for others. She now is a marketing strategist and runs a successful content agency, Inkery Co., is happily married, and trying for a baby.
