Today's disagreement is on The Telepathy Tapes, Autism, and the Paranormal. If you're not familiar, The Telepathy Tapes is a cultural phenomenon and podcast that launched in Fall 2024. By early January, it was the number one podcast in the country. Today, it's still in the top ten. Its core thesis is quite provocative: that there are non-verbal autistic young people who possess telepathic powers and are able to read the minds of their parents and teachers. In this episode, we use The Telepathy Tapes as a springboard to ask some big questions about science, skepticism, and the nature of truth. Is telepathy real? How should we evaluate the claims in the podcast? Do these claims adversely affect–even harm–the autistic young people being celebrated? To have this conversation, we've brought together a journalist and a religious scholar with very different approaches to understanding the truth.Zaid Jilani is a journalist whose work has appeared in The Intercept, News Nation and Alternet. He writes about politics and culture on his Substack The American Saga.Jeffrey Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University and the Associate Director of the Center for Theory and Research at the Esalen Institute. Jeffrey is also the author of thirteen books, including most recently: How to Think Impossibly. Before we get started, a note. In The Telepathy Tapes, the nonverbal autistic young people use a controversial method to communicate with the outside world. It's called “facilitated communication.” There is an adult that helps to facilitate the young person's communication—usually through some form of touch and holding a letterboard that the young person point to. We get into this in-depth on the podcast.Questions or comments about this episode? Email us at podcast@thedisagreement.com or find us on X and Instagram @thedisagreementhq. Is it a hoax?), near-death experiences, and how science falls short when studying the metaphysical and supernatural abilities. Jeffrey explains how the very attempt at measuring extra-sensory abilities could make them unmeasurable. Mayim and Jeffrey explore the possibility that those with autism, ADHD or who are nonverbal may be able to tap into another realm and how fear plays a large role in limiting our perception of these abilities. Jeffrey J. Holy Heretics: Losing Religion and Finding Jesus

Episode Summary:John Philip Newell is best described as “a wandering teacher with the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar.” Formerly the Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, John Philip joined me from his home in Edinburgh to offer a new, yet ancient way forward in a time when the empire has once again wedded and bedded Christianity.Long before the colonizing forces of imperial Christianity made their way to the British Isles, an indigenous form of spirituality nourished those sacred souls living in the borderlands of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Celts believed divinity pervaded every aspect of life. There was no distinction between secular and sacred, human and divine. The Celtic vision of the world is essentially sacramental, perceiving God's presence in ordinary things like rocks, forests, springs, groves, hills, and meadows. “The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common,” writes Esther De Waal. For them, the natural world is the container of the sacred and a gateway to the luminous—the holy intersection between mortals and the supernatural. These tribes bewildered the Roman church because they were relational rather than rational, inspirational rather than institutional, and indigenous instead of imperial. In this modern age, when we find ourselves divorced from the natural world, addicted to technology, controlled by institutional religion, and victims of an empire of our own making, there is a great deal to learn from the ancient Celts. We need nothing less than a reclamation of our humanity, a rekindling of the Beltaine Fire burning in every human heart. Most of us are still reeling from the recent presidential election. The dark forces of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and white supremacy are chronically ingrained in the highest levels of government, blessed and absolved by white Christianity. But here's what I'm slowly starting to believe—every dark ending births a new beginning. Evil never has the last word. We've been given a dark gift, a chance to resist and re-imagine the world as it should be. We are living in liminal time, “when we can't go back but we can't see the way forward,” writes my friend Melanie Mudge. What better time to wake up, “dream new dreams,” and rekindle the sacred flame in every human soul. As John Philip reminds us:“We live in a threshold moment. We are waking up to the earth again. We are awakening to the feminine and the desire to faithfully tend the interrelationship of all things. In this moment, politically, culturally, and religiously, we are witnessing the death throes of a shadow form of masculine power that has arrayed itself over against the earth and over against the sacredness of the feminine. This shadow form of power, however, has no ultimate future, for it is essentially false in its betrayal of the earth and the feminine. So in fear it is lashing out with unprecedented force. But it is not the deep spirit of this moment in time. Something else is trying to be born.”Celtic spirituality is needed now more than ever. Allow John Philip to lead you into deeper streams of indigenous wisdom where action and contemplation, vision and profound mystery light our collective way forward. His latest book, The Great Search, is out now. Bio:John Philip Newell (b 1953) is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being.Canadian by birth, and also Scottish, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including his award-winning publication, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book, also with HarperOne (and published in the UK by Wild Goose), is The Great Search (August 2024), in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' (or scotus vagans as they were called) seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He continues, however, to see himself as ‘a grateful son of the Christian household' seeking to be in relationship with the wisdom of humanity's other great spiritual traditions. In 2011 John Philip was awarded the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC for his prophetic work in the field of spirituality and compassion. In 2022 he received the Sacred Universe Award from the Well Center for Spirituality in Chicago, IL in recognition of his significant work in furthering humanity's relationship with the sacredness of Earth. Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! From precognitive dreams and telepathic visions to near-death experiences, UFO encounters, and beyond, so-called impossible phenomena are not supposed to happen. But they do happen—all the time. Jeffrey J. Kripal asserts that the impossible is a function not of reality but of our everchanging assumptions about what is real. How to Think Impossibly invites us to think about these fantastic (yet commonplace) experiences as an essential part of being human, expressive of a deeply shared reality that is neither mental nor material but gives rise to both. Thinking with specific individuals and their extraordinary experiences in vulnerable, open, and often humorous ways, Kripal interweaves humanistic and scientific inquiry to foster an awareness that the fantastic is real, the supernatural is super natural, and the impossible is possible. Jeffrey J. Kripal holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. He is the author of numerous books, including The Superhumanities: Historical Precedents, Moral Objections, New Realities, The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge, Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred, Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion, Mutants and Mystics: Science Fiction, Superhero Comics, and the Paranormal, and just published, also by the University of Chicago Press, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else.

Guess what? Jeffrey J. Kripal, you know him, you love him, is on this episode of Earth: A Love Story. Jeff holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. He worked with Rice's special collections director to create and host the Archives of the Impossible, which is a collection of accounts detailing the supernatural, including thousands of firsthand abduction accounts, letters written to Whitley and Anne Strieber, once highly classified government remote reviewing files and has become one of the largest and most significant collections of research materials related to these marginalized and tabboed topics in the world. Jeff also organized the Archives of the Impossible conferences. He is the author of over a dozen books, including Authors of the Impossible: The Paranormal and the Sacred, Esalen: America and the Religion of No Religion, Kali's Child: The Mystical and the Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna and The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge. His present areas of writing and research include the articulation of a New Comparativism within the study of religion that will put “the impossible” back on the table again, a robust and even conversation between the sciences and the humanities, and the mapping of an emergent mythology or “Super Story” within paranormal communities and individual visionaries. Jeff's new book, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief and Everything Else is out now. Through my own personal lens, there have been a few really pivotal interactions with Jeff's work which have informed my own journey and work. First, Jeff is the one who said, in reference to experiencer accounts, If you haven't heard about the trauma or the sex, you haven't heard the whole story. Second, he said We need to tell better and better stories so that we can have better and better experiences. We essentially control our future and our children's children's future. We can constantly make a different ‘movie' that we then exist in and experience ourselves in. (Which, you guys, I think is evolution through creativity). “Historically, there's no such thing as a pure tradition. And I also think as human beings, we transcend these religions and we transcend these cultures. And so the cherry picking is an affirmation of our transcendence. It's like, no, you are more than your religious tradition. You are more than your culture. You are more than your body. And you are also your body and your religion and your culture. Yes, yes, yes, all that. But you are also more. So I think, again, the power of the modern period is that we're all so super connected and in communication with everything that we know that, we know that in a way that we didn't know that, you know, four or five-hundred years ago.” So says Jeffrey Kripal, who holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. Jeff is the author of many, many, many books that span a massive academic career—books on Kali, books on Gnosticism, and books on supernatural phenomena. He's also the author of a short and immensely readable book called The Flip: Who You Really Are and Why it Matters, which is the focus of our conversation today. As an academic and historian of comparative religion, Jeff writes and speaks beautifulyl about the way that we're losing our collective stories, and the way that we're splitting ourselves apart, divided between the sciences and the humanities. In The Flip, Jeff recounts how both science and spirituality are using different languages to explain and explore the same experiences, and what emerges when “The Flip” happens, those often mystical moments when the minds of scientists across time have cracked open to see the world in a different way. I loved this book and I love Jeff's wide-ranging and yet imminently approachable and kind mind—I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyedwesty having it. The division between humanities and sciences in the study of UFOs and the exploration of the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos has become a common practice. But why? Why can't either of these fields find common ground in an area of study that no one has a definite answer to? Jeffrey J. Kripal, a professor who holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University, joins me in a discussion on various intersections of UAP, Theology and science. Though out of discussion we stubble into our human inherent religious tribalism. Is this hindering our progression of understanding our place in the cosmos in light of potential life elsewhere? And why in Abrahamic regions we view ETs "as us and them, and God is on our side." Meanwhile taking a deeper look at why some experiencers turn to myths and symbols of Christian demonology for answers.  Join us as we get rebelliously curious.   Watch the YouTube interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oq6-yjbp98 Follow Chrissy Newton: Winner of the Canadian Podcast Awards for Best Science Series. Elizabeth G. Krohn & Jeffrey J. Kripal (authors of Changed in a Flash) detail the events surrounding Elizabeth's near-death experience the day she was struck by lightning, her 2-week experience in heaven, and the newfound knowledge and abilities she returned with. A prior spiritual skeptic, Elizabeth provides visceral descriptions of the sights and sounds of the afterlife and its nonlinear nature, and discusses making the difficult decision to leave her "home" in heaven and return to the cloudiness and uncertainty of earth. She explains why she thinks everyone's experience of heaven is different, what changed about how she saw the world after her experience, how she revealed the unexplainable occurrence to her friends and family, and even how it changed the way she parented her children. Elizabeth opens up about the pre-cognitive nightmares she experienced predicting natural and manmade disasters, the synesthesia and aura-reading abilities she acquired, why she is hesitant to utilize her psychic abilities with others, and how she handles responsibility of knowing what's going to happen. Jeffrey Kripal (Philosophy and Religious Thought, Rice University) helps us make sense of near-death experiences as he considers the patterns he sees throughout people's experiences, attempts to apply scientific models to explain them, and explains precognitive experiences in relation to the space-time continuum. Elizabeth discusses her personal sexual trauma, how she thinks trauma can open us up to other realities, why she think this near-death experience happened to her, whether or not she believes in reincarnation, and how her specific story can empower us all.Changed in a Flash, by Elizabeth G. Interview begins @ 5:00 Scholars who investigate paranormal, religious, philosophical, metaphysical, and other similar topics fall under the umbrella of the humanities. However, many professors are hesitant to delve into topics that cannot be explained through empirical data or scientific methods. Cultural historian and scholar of religion at Rice University, Jeff Kripal, has dedicated much of his work to exploring these questions. In his latest book, "The Superhumanities," Kripal argues that the humanities must expand beyond their traditional scope and engage with supernatural and paranormal phenomena that challenge our understanding of what it means to be human. Kripal suggests that the people we revere in the humanities were "weird" and had altered states of consciousness, embodiment, precognitive dreams, out-of-body experiences, and mystical experiences of unity with the cosmos. He argues that these alternate states of consciousness and embodiments were, in fact, the origins of their thinking. To fully understand and appreciate the humanities, Kripal believes we must embrace the strange and eerie in our academic and cultural discussions. In this interview, Kripal discussed his new book and the significance of embracing unconventional phenomena in the humanities. The conversation covers a range of topics, including the fractals of social systems, psychotherapy as a means of adapting to a sick social system, listening to the symbolic communication from experiences of the paranormal, metaphysics and the U.F.O., the beauty of not knowing, Christianity and the paranormal, Christianity as a modernized sociological tribal container, black critical theory, feminist theory, psychoanalytic theory, queer theory, post-colonial theory, & ecocriticism, and gender and the modern world. Overall, Kripal's work emphasizes the need for scholars in the humanities to expand their focus beyond empirical data and scientific methods to explore the strange and mysterious phenomena of life. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be human and how we can navigate the complexities of the world around us. Bio: Jeffrey J. The wonders of modern technology mean many men now spend most of their working lives sat at desks or screens, exerting very little physical energy. We now pay money to do the kind of labour for which our forebears were themselves paid. What are the hidden costs of this today? Have we become less active, less fulfilled, and less purposeful in the world as a result? The "Muscular Christianity" movement in the 19th century saw these problems well in advance. At a time where Christianity, for many men, was becoming overly intellectual and impractical, the Muscular Christians exhorted men to rediscover the positive use of their bodies as a spiritual and theological imperative. Although this led some towards a more "social gospel", the movement grasped key aspects of the Christian faith which have again been neglected today, such as the cultivation of character through brotherhood and sport, the significance of distinctly male and female bodies, and the need for virtuous men who can use their strength to protect (rather than abuse) those weaker than men. What might a revival of a more "muscular" Christianity look like in our own time? ** Please help Pod of the Gaps by ... - Liking us and/or leaving a review on your podcast provider - Sharing an episode with a friend (or two or three) - Supporting us (https://www.patreon.com/wkop) RESOURCES: - https://twitter.com/MrT — for our cover image this episode - Greg Morse, 'The Search for Manly Men of God: A History of Muscular Christianity' (2022) https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/the-search-for-manly-men-of-god - Thomas Hughes, Tom Brown's Schooldays (1857) - W. In The Dreamer and the Dream: Afrofuturism and Black Religious Thought (Ohio State UP, 2021), Professor Roger Sneed illuminates the interplay of Black religious thought with science fiction narratives to present a bold case for Afrofuturism as an important channel for Black spirituality. In the process, he challenges the assumed primacy of the Black church as the arbiter of Black religious life. Incorporating analyses of Octavia Butler's Parable books, Janelle Monáe's Afrofuturistic saga, Star Trek's Captain Benjamin Sisko, Marvel's Black Panther, and the philosophies of Sun Ra and the Nation of Islam, Sneed demonstrates how Afrofuturism has contributed to Black visions of the future. He also investigates how Afrofuturism has influenced religious scholarship that looks to Black cultural production as a means of reimagining Blackness in the light of the sacred. The result is an expansive new look at the power of science fiction and Afrofuturism to center the diversity of Black spirituality. Roger A. Sneed is Professor and Chair of Religion at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. Our thought patterns are colonized in many ways, though many of us don't recognize this phenomenon. The colonial way of thinking has become so embedded in our culture that few people even realize that they hold belief systems that are counterproductive and counterintuitive to their well-being. In order to fully embrace traditional belief systems, we must overcome unconscious thoughts of Eurocentric superiority. Doing so is a process. Jeff joins us from Houston. He is the current Associate Dean of the Faculty and Graduate Programs in the School of the Humanities and the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought at Rice University. He is also the Associate Director of the Center for Theory and Research at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. In this conversation we explore the “3rd space” that Jeff occupies and a wide array of topics therein and all connected to the esoteric: a term that is important to Jeff. We discuss Jeff's position on the physical world vs the immaterial world, Belief vs Beliefs, the importance of the Humanities and the porosity of the human being. We delve immediately into the Paranormal and learn how old religious heterodoxy allowed what we could accept and what we should ignore and linked to how many scientists (social and otherwise) are “in the closet” about these experiences. We discuss how our culture is trying to change itself today as we share our experiences without the societal / cultural shackles of our recent ancestors. We learn more about his thoughts on religion as a mechanism to tap into paranormal forces and then attribute to an external deity. We discuss being in your own story, creating your own story versus believe that you are your own story. We talk about religion as an art, the self, reincarnation, the importance of acting, the persona – and the Friendly Neighbourhood Spiderman.   Soo much to talk about and too little time!   To DONATE to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. Do Christians become Gods? Explaining Theosis with Michael ReardonWhat does it mean to be a partaker of the divine nature? What does it mean to have the life of Jesus manifest in our bodies? What does it mean to grow up into mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ? Well, the ancient church called it Theosis. In short, theosis is the deification of the Church. But in what way and to what end is the church deified? As an evangelical protestant, hearing the phrase “deification” causes an involuntary Gag reflex deep within me. However, after a good bit of study, I don't think the doctrine of “sanctification” is sufficient to express all that Christ has provided for us. There may be something in the doctrine of theosis that evangelical protestants may want to rediscover. In this episode, my new friend Michael Reardon is with us to discuss the doctrine of Theosis, with a special emphasis on Ecclesiological Theosis. Michael is the Professor of Biblical Languages and Religious Thought at Canada Christian College in Ontario. I had the privilege of sitting in on Michael's presentation at ETS this year and thought he would be great to have on the show. Donate (Paypal)https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=GC2Z86XHHG4X6___________________________________________________________________________________Exclusive Content (Patreon)https://www.patreon.com/TheRemnantRadio__________________________________________________________________________________We're social! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheRemnantRadioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theremnantradio/___________________________________________________________________________________Our Favorite Bookshttps://www.amazon.com/shop/theremnantradio___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Rowntree's Church Wellspringhttps://wellspringdfw.org/___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Miller's Church Reclamation Churchhttps://reclamationdenver.com/___________________________________________________________________________________Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classes__________________________________________________________________________________The Gospel Of Mark Group Packets https://the-remnant-radio.creator-spring.com/listing/the-gospel-of-mark-workbooks
