    The Network: Your Manufacturing Lifeline

Your industrial network isn't just infrastructure—it's the lifeline of your manufacturing operation. Without a properly designed and installed network, you're setting yourself up for productivity losses, frustrating downtime, and potentially compromising worker safety.Manufacturing environments present unique challenges that office-grade networking equipment simply can't handle. Vibration, contaminants, extreme temperatures, and electromagnetic interference quickly destroy standard components, yet many facilities continue using consumer-grade solutions that inevitably fail. From patch panels duct-taped to beams to unshielded cables running alongside power lines, these makeshift setups might save money initially but prove catastrophically expensive when they fail at critical moments.A comprehensive network assessment prevents problems before they escalate into expensive failures. This process examines everything from component selection (choosing appropriate cables, connectors, and switches) to performance requirements (understanding latency needs from basic HMI applications to precision motion control systems). Security implementation through frameworks like CPWE ensures protection at every level while maintaining operational uptime. What makes industrial networks particularly challenging is that they only grow larger over time. Today's network is the smallest it will ever be, as facilities continually add devices, sensors, and capabilities. This constant expansion demands forward-thinking design that can accommodate growth without compromising performance, particularly for time-sensitive applications where even microsecond delays cause significant problems.Ready to take control of your industrial network? 3 Ways To Begin Your Smart Manufacturing Journey

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2025 22:43 Transcription Available

The path to smart manufacturing excellence is paved with strategy, not just technology. As manufacturing facilities face increasing pressure to modernize, many struggle with where to begin. The answer lies not in rushing to install the newest devices, but in gaining clarity about your current state. We unpack three essential steps that form the foundation of any successful smart manufacturing journey. First, the installed asset analysis—a comprehensive evaluation of your facility's electrical and control infrastructure that delivers objective truth rather than assumptions. This critical assessment reveals obsolete equipment, identifies gaps in critical spares, and highlights potential safety hazards that could derail your operations. When you understand what you truly have, you can make informed decisions about what needs to change. The second step involves exploring possibilities through a smart tech review. This immersive, hands-on approach demonstrates how modern technologies can improve diagnostics, connectivity, and performance in your specific environment. By bringing together diverse stakeholders—from maintenance technicians to IT personnel—these reviews transform into creative workshops where your team can imagine future possibilities. Finally, progression planning bridges your current state with your desired future through a strategic roadmap. This multi-year plan ensures every replacement moves you forward, standardizing on smarter, connected devices while establishing data collection priorities aligned with your operational goals. The key is collaborative development across departments to turn upgrade necessities into innovation opportunities.Manufacturing excellence doesn't require perfect conditions to begin transformation. Start small with targeted assessments, build momentum through incremental improvements, and partner with experts who understand both the technology and the practical challenges of implementation. Your smart manufacturing journey begins with understanding where you are—then deciding where you want to go.Keep Asking Why...Smart Manufacturing Resources:Smart Manufacturing GuideRead our latest article on Smart Manufacturing herehttps://eecooline.com/inspire/smart_journey_beginOnline Account Registration:Video Explanation of Registering for an AccountRegister for an AccountOther Resources to help with your journey:Installed Asset Analysis SupportSystem Planning SupportSchedule your Visit to a Lab in North or South CarolinaSchedule your Visit to a Lab in VirginiaSubmit your questions and feedback to: podcast@eecoaskwhy.comFollow EECO on LinkedInHost: Chris Grainger

    Progression and Smart Devices

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2025 21:29 Transcription Available

Digital transformation in manufacturing isn't achieved through sweeping overhauls—it happens through progression. Like mountain climbers confronting "false summits" where they think they've reached the peak only to discover more climbing ahead, manufacturers often face discouraging plateaus on their journey toward modernization. The key to conquering these challenges? Smart devices that provide the connectivity foundation for everything that follows.Smart manufacturing begins with standardization of your network infrastructure. Before implementing any technology, you need clear standards for communication protocols across all levels—from field devices to enterprise systems. Without this foundation, scaling becomes virtually impossible. Following the wisdom to "think big, act small," successful implementations typically begin with a single production line or process cell as a test bed. Define what data you need, prove the concept works, and only then scale across additional systems. The most challenging aspect for many manufacturers isn't collecting data—it's transforming that raw information into actionable insights that drive meaningful decisions. Power meters, temperature sensors, motor overload relays, and other smart devices provide tremendous data, but without standardized formats, monitoring mechanisms, and analytics tools, that information remains underutilized. When evaluating smart devices, focus on capabilities that provide relevant insights for your specific applications rather than being distracted by features that won't deliver practical value. As you progress in your smart manufacturing journey, prepare for emerging technologies by establishing Ethernet standardization, enabling mobile integration for real-time access via smartphones, and exploring how AI can prevent downtime through predictive analytics. Remember that progress happens incrementally—one small, intentional step after another. The marathon toward modernization is won through continuous improvement, not overnight transformation.Smart Manufacturing Resources:Smart Manufacturing GuideRead our latest article on Smart Manufacturing herehttps://eecoonline.com/inspire/smart_manufacture_conceptOnline Account Registration:Video Explanation of Registering for an AccountRegister for an AccountOther Resources to help with your journey:Installed Asset Analysis SupportSystem Planning SupportSchedule your Visit to a Lab in North or South CarolinaSchedule your Visit to a Lab in VirginiaSubmit your questions and feedback to: podcast@eecoaskwhy.comFollow EECO on LinkedInHost: Chris Grainger

Debriefing can have a powerful impact on business when done correctly. In this powerful conversation Robert "Cujo" Teschner breaks down the idea behind a debrief and to execute them to achieve significant results.  His definition of a debrief is simple and elegant - Debrief is the constructive evaluation of the quality of our decisions and associated actions measured against the objectives we set out to achieve. The key words of that definition are what Cujo unpacks in detail.  He starts by differentiating between a debrief and feedback.  Current business culture puts a heavy emphasis on feedback and while that has its benefits it often is met with a negative connotation.  A debrief has an entirely different objective and when the culture is created to execute them efficiently, consistently and with a high level of vulnerability magical things begin happening. Cujo gets tactical into how you can begin executing debriefs that make a true impact.  He covers the importance of perspective and ensuring that every seat at the table has an opportunity to be heard.  He breaks down the importance of debriefing wins and not solely focusing on areas of improvement.  This is a monumental shift in thinking as most organizations never take the time to research why and initiative, process, sale was such a big win and spend too much time discussing what went wrong. This conversation you want to have a notepad ready as the wisdom Cujo shared will move the needle.  By the way Cujo is a former fighter pilot and his stories are absolutely incredible!  We thank him for his service and how he continues to make those around him better everyday. Michael Van Keulen does a phenomenal job of breaking down the role of technology in procurement. He has a passion for procurement and  believes that best-in-class procurement outcomes depend on three factors: PeopleProcessTechnology Without the right combination of these three elements, sustainable best-in-class procurement outcomes will not be achieved. For technology to make a meaningful contribution to procurement outcomes, it should be viewed as an enabler that allows procurement professionals to focus on those areas that drive more value, such as risk mitigation, better quality, better lead times, payment terms, cash flow optimization, and environmental and social governance. Michael believes that technology should be easy to use and be adopted quickly by both internal users and supplier communities to reduce friction and break down silos between the two groups. He gave a sneak peek into his life outside of procurement and you will be amazed at his incredible journey.Remember to keep asking why!Guest: Michael Van Keulen - Chief Procurement Officer at Coupa Software Coupa SoftwareHost: Chris GraingerExecutive Producer: Adam Sheets
