Value investor Brian Hirschmann, managing partner of hedge fund Hirschmann Capital, makes his debut on episode 152 of The Julia La Roche Show. In this episode, Hirschmann argues that we're currently in the most dangerous time in financial history and that three bubbles—stocks, real estate, and global bonds—could all burst. Hirschmann also makes the case that we'll likely see more persistent inflation in the future, given the massive deficits and debt burden. He argues that the price of gold could soar to $7,000. For investments, he favors gold miners and exposure to international equities. Welcome back to the show, Brian Hirschman, Managing Partner of Hirschmann Partnership, also known as the “World's Most Bearish Hedge Fund.” Brian explains how many investors are unaware of how to value gold in comparison to other assets. He details a methodology for analyzing the gold price over long periods and notes that it is currently below the fifty year average, which could cause gold to skyrocket in the coming years. Brian outlines why gold did so well during the inflationary period of the 1970s, as it is the only asset with no counterparty risk. The lack of appreciation for gold may be due to bond investors remaining confident in their inflation expectations, but if that changes, gold will rise. High inflation can be caused by excessive debt, which is a problem for the United States and other Western nations, and Brian references the British Empire's debt to GDP ratio and eventual default. Japan's approach is different, but their situation is precarious as well, with Japanese depositors now getting negative returns when adjusted for inflation. This could lead to depositors investing elsewhere to seek returns, which could be a big problem for the Bank of Japan. Brian also discusses how global bubbles are worsening, and why we could see multiple collapses all at once. He gives some targets for where gold and the miners could head as a result, and explains why the Mining ETFs and equities have largely not kept up with the gold price. He notes that A.I. will likely not be the panacea to get us out of the coming crisis, and that demographics are contributing to entitlement problems and a general decline in the labor force, which is not good for GDP.

Tom welcomes Brian Hirschman back to the show. Brian is Managing Partner of Hirschmann Partnership which is occasionally referred to as the "World's Most Bearish Hedge Fund." Brian expects inflation to persist for longer than most investors expect due to massive government debt. Inevitably, the U.S. government will default which will send miners and gold far higher. We could expect some benefits from labor and supply chains improving but inflation has many causes. At some point, government debt will matter, and much higher inflation will result. Investors shouldn't be too concerned about interest rates as the bigger driver of gold will be risks of default and inflation. Markets are different today due to the enormous size of the global asset bubbles. Gold will move higher when investors realize that inflation will be here to stay. Crypto remains a much smaller asset class than gold and therefore the impact of crypto is likely not that significant. Many crypto investors are more speculative and most aren't that interested in metals. Gold is the ultimate low-risk asset whereas cryptocurrencies remain risky speculative assets. Over the long term, the gold price will drive the mining equities much higher and we're starting to see this occurring. Gold miners should go up much higher than the returns on gold when the bubbles start to burst. All governments have too much debt and are trying to keep rates low thru regulations. Banks now own four trillion in debt securities issued by the Fed. Should foreign debt holders realize the risks then they will start selling their treasuries. This could easily trigger a crisis since we can't control other countries with regulations. Marginally higher interest rates today will likely not have much impact on inflation but could impact default risks. Brian compares the status of the U.S. with that of the last European debt crisis. China's real estate bubble is even worse than that of the United States. When it pops we will see severe impacts on global markets. O longa “Marte Um” inaugurou a sessão World Cinema.

Was wissen wir heute? Tom welcomes Brian Hirschman, Managing Partner of Hirschmann Partnership, also also considered by ValueWalk to be the "World's Most Bearish Hedge Fund." Brian discusses how all the bubbles have only grown in recent months, but their gold investments continue to perform very well. Brian discusses how the US has crossed the 130% GDP to Debt level and last year, and they reviewed past outcomes of countries at these debt levels. The conclusion from the study was that default would be all but inevitable. Warren Buffet said recently, "If governments could always borrow at negative interest rates, it would have been discovered 2000 years ago." People today have too much faith in the government's ability to borrow. He explains how equities are overvalued when measured by CAPE metrics. Today we are at levels twice the norm, which means that a pullback of 60% would be required to return to normal. Bond markets are also likely to burst, which would likely mean a drop of 80%. We seem to have another housing bubble, along with the price to rent and price to income levels, all being back nearly at 2006 levels. China produced and used in one month more cement than the US utilizes in a year. If China bursts, it would almost certainly cripple global growth. The next crisis could easily be the worst crisis since the great depression. At this point, nearly anything could trigger such an event. Brian remains a gold bull and believes any crisis should be a significant windfall for investors with mining equities. Since the market cap of gold equities is relatively small, he expects a lot of new capital could come flooding in looking for a new home. He discusses how they measure and compare the value of mining equities. He argues that physical gold's nominal returns are going to underperform most other investments. This is why funds like Berkshire Hathaway chose to invest in Barrick Gold rather than physical metal. He explains how they adjust and rebalance their portfolio depending on expected future returns and why this is important for mining equities. Lastly, he touches on two markets that he feels are in bubbles, bitcoin, and global housing markets. Tom welcomes Brian Hirschman, Managing Partner of Hirschmann Partnership. They are known as the "World's Most Bearish Hedge Fund." Brian says there is some truth to that statement because they are bearish on many sectors. Brian is concerned about US government debt levels as they will soon reach 144%. Those levels are hazardous as almost all countries tend to default around 130%. The only modern example of a country that hasn't defaulted is present-day Japan, but even then, it's only a matter of time. Today, both bonds and stocks are ignoring the risks of default. He discusses how the Fed conducts it's bond purchases and why they are "the world's greatest hedge fund." If the US government has a debt crisis, he believes that could lead to hyperinflation. Not only is the United States having massive debt problems, but so are most countries around the world, including other central banks. On top of all that, China has significant imbalances, overcapacity, and mal-investment. We could have a situation where a crisis spreads from country to country and region to region simultaneously. This period could make the first half of 2020 look uneventful. He compares the global economic policy of suppressing financial crises to putting out small fires whenever they occur in a forest. Eventually, fuel (debt) builds up, and the fires become uncontrollable. Keep in mind the next debt crisis could occur at a government level, and then they won't be able to bail out the banks and private sector. Instead, you might see austerity measures. He believes the next inflation crisis will be worse than the 1970s. He discusses how high gold could go in a crisis and the best ways for investors to protect themselves. Brian talks about the advantages of smaller mining companies in terms of valuations than those bundled into ETFs. What a treat! An exclusive LIVE episode featuring Paul Adler, Silvia Dorado and Marc Ventresca talking about management classics. This was recorded from a PDW hosted by Pedro at the 2018 AoM Annual Meeting in Chicago, the purpose of which was to raise interest towards classic authors/ideas in the field of organization and management theory. It offered scholars from all levels the opportunity to reflect on insights of earlier scholarship and their relevance for current research, complementing the strong emphasis (on new ideas and approaches. This is of great importance as the field has thus far been more attentive to disruptions than continuities; pursuing novelty over tradition. In the workshop, senior scholars presented talks on four classic authors (Karl Marx, Mary Parker Follett, Mary Douglas, and Albert Hirschman) to discuss their contemporary relevance. This was followed by a roundtable discussion limited to fifty participants. The workshop demonstrated how attentive (re)readings of classic scholarship reaffirm time and time again their enduring importance. The discussion provided valuable insights on central organizational research problematics (e.g., coordination and control), stimulated complex thinking, enabled analytical comparisons between current and past phenomena (e.g., industrialization and digitization), and serve as ‘exemplars’ of academic excellence and of research that is problem-driven and focused on real-world issues.
Sometimes I feel like we are living in a Neal Stephenson novel with companies like Amazon making it’s so darn easy to flip through their app on your phone, ordering whatever you need and having it arrive almost instantly (or at least within a few hours). It’s amazing. Remember, it was not too long ago that you’d have to run from store to store searching for an item! Now your “wild goose chases” can happen right from your glowing 4 inch screen. That said, when I’m shopping and there are a bunch of similar products out there I find myself relying heavily on reviews as my guide to finding the best product. I’ve spent hours looking at reviews and deliberating. After chatting one day with my friend Matt Hirschmann of Lucid Creative, a D.C. area based full-service design firm, about Amazon, we hit upon a really important topic; the legitimacy of reviews. There was a time that we felt pretty confident referencing the number of reviews with the strength of the review to make a quick decision. But spoiler: bad apples are ruining this for all of us. There are services out there that specifically help get your product positive reviews on Amazon – good for the products, bad for consumers. In this episode, Matt shares his latest insights with me as we try to save the Amazon review system by offering up a potential startup idea for anyone willing to take it on. We recorded this episode from a pool in Key West, Florida while on brief summer holiday, so you may hear a pool waterfall or a bird chirping in the background. Please don’t try this at home, you’ll never sound as good as a bird and you could drop your recording gear. Not to mention, you’ll want to strive for better work life balance.

For years, public discourse and policy debates about people with disabilities have focused on the rights of those with medically recognized impairments. Increasingly, however, scholars in the field of disability studies, including Fellow Nancy J. Hirschmann, professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, are reshaping the way we see our bodies, the range of freedoms we enjoy, and the limitations we experience. In this podcast, Hirschmann helps us to begin to make sense of the complex relationship between freedom and disability. She speaks with NHC Vice President for Scholarly Programs Tania Munz about her latest book project, Freedom, Power, and Disability, which builds on her previous scholarship on the intersections of politics, gender, and philosophy. As Hirschmann notes, thinkers for centuries framed disability as a problem or disorder to be overcome or cured—a phenomenon now known as the “medical model.” Beginning in the 1960s, however, disability scholars began to offer a new “social model” which recognizes the ways society is organized to address the needs of certain kinds of bodies over others, whether through the built environment or societal attitudes. The social model of disability, Hirschmann argues, helps us reconceive barriers to freedom in a broader way. At the same time, however, she recognizes the model’s limitations—specifically, the risk of oversimplifying disability as mere “difference.” Along with other scholars, she advocates for what she terms a “third” or “ecological model.” Here, the body itself is not merely a social product, but also a material entity, which allows us to more fully understand the roles of subjectivity and desire in freedom. Hirschmann concludes this fascinating podcast by reflecting on what political theory can offer disability studies—and, conversely, how disability studies can help remap the coordinates of the field of political science.
If you make peace with food correctly, will you lose weight? Have you gained weight with intuitive eating so think you are doing it wrong? Or, that it isn't working? Does going back on a diet feel tempting due to these body changes, even though you know it ultimately isn't the right path for you? Listen now to hear my tips on how to grapple with this food peace struggle. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. This episode is brought to you by my FREE roadmap, PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. Join our Facebook group to get extra support! Episode's Key Points: Some diets are diets in disguise! They pretend to be non-diets, but they still focus on weight loss and tell us that certain foods are good or bad. Even intuitive eating has been co-opted by the diet industry! Intuitive eating can result in weight loss, weight gain, or sustaining our weight... intuitive eating is not about the weight!! It's about experiencing health, and letting the weight fall where it may. So if you see someone promoting intuitive eating as a weight loss solution, know that this is a diet in disguise, and not a part of true intuitive eating! Instead, this is a part of diet culture. Our weight will ALWAYS change!! We can't love ourselves thin. Emotional eating and binge eating does NOT mean that we hate our bodies! Emotional eating and binge eating are a COPING responses... if there was more permission for our bodies to be whatever size they needed to be, there would probably be less binge and emotional eating. If we eliminated dieting and a fatphobic society, binge eating and emotional eating wouldn't feel as out of control! Be careful who's advice you take in the intuitive eating world!! Not everyone who claims to be teaching intuitive eating has done the proper training. Only our body knows how much we're meant to weight, and the more we diet and experience weight cycling, the heavier we get. 95% of people regain weight after each diet, and a third to a half of those individuals will regain MORE weight than they lost... making us ultimately heavier. Weight cycling also results in a reduced metabolism. Intuitive eating and the healing process are NOT at fault for weight gain! Instead, it's the fault of the initial diet, as well as our natural set point. Work towards body neutrality by acknowledging the fatphobia in our society. Fatphobia moves us away from health!! She also shares the Health At Every Size paradigm, and the social justice aspect of the movement that tries to end discrimination on people based on shape and size. “We need to acknowledge size diversity - that people come in different shapes and sizes.” - Judith Matz This Week on the Every Body Podcast: Where the “thin ideal” in children lead to and examples of fat-shaming messages Approximate age that children start to diet and be conscious about their weight and body size How the diet-binge cycle changes the body’s physiology Damaging effects of weight bullying and how people tend to put the blame on the victims Child obesity and preconceived notions about it Why access is important in improving healthcare and healthful behavior How to teach children to be healthy eaters The significance of talking about restriction in sugar addiction research Advantages of having Binge Eating Disorders added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) Manifestations that show how deep the weight stereotypes are embedded in people Resources Mentioned: Overcoming Overeating book by Jane R. Unrestricted podcast, shares her letter about her food peace journey and struggles! None of this is your fault!! Sometimes our family dynamics produce a situation in which the children have to become their own parents to survive. This can impact our relationship with food very deeply. Ellyn Satter's food hierarchy of needs versus the Maslow hierarchy of needs: our foundational needs must be met in order to build towards needs higher up the pyramid. If we're struggling with our foundational needs, we won't be motivated to reach for our more nuanced needs. For example, food security is the foundation of the food hierarchy of needs. If someone wants to work towards wellness, food security must be established first! Some examples of food insecurity: poverty, growing up with caregivers who were always on diets or policing food etc. These environments prevent a foundational sense of food security from forming. Wellness is NOT the most important thing in our relationship with food... it's food security. Permission around foods (especially fun foods!) can be part of the big picture of healing from a past of food insecurity. Feeling our feelings is very important in this food peace process!! If we work at it, our needs around permission and food security will eventually be met. Be patient! You are worth this work!! Food peace is your birthright. Weight stigma is at the core of a lot of our food peace struggles. It is OPPRESSIVE! We need to stop the discrimination based on weight, rather than push people to change their bodies. We need to end weight-based bullying!! The media tells us which body sizes are acceptable. Representation of ALL kinds of bodies is so important. Weight-based stigma in the eating disorder community is a big problem! You can't tell by a person's appearance if they're struggling with an eating disorder. Weight is NOT indicative of health! All bodies of all sizes and abilities can strive for health-promoting behaviors, including body acceptance and intuitive eating. Self-compassion is key!! It's time we tackle our cultural eating disorder recovery and speak out about the seriousness of eating disorders. Dieting is a part of the eating disorder experience... if diets weren't normalized, we would have fewer eating disorders! On March 1st start looking for #ChangeTheGame!! Let's change the conversation around dieting. Dieting is NOT healthy eating. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! Eating disorders kill more people than any other mental illness. One person dies every 23 hours from an eating disorder. The Canary in the Coal Mine metaphor: Coal miners used to bring canaries down into the coal mines with them. If the canaries were singing, the coal miners knew they were safe. Once the singing stopped though, that was the coal miners' cue to get out quickly before the toxic gas killed them too. We live in a toxic environment focused on the thin ideal... some people are impacted much more quickly or intensely than others, and they develop eating disorders (the canaries). They are our warning to fix our toxic environment before it gets us too (the coal miners). Many people who go through classic eating disorder treatment receive a meal plan from their dietitians to guide their eating in recovery. This system may be flawed though, and potentially damaging, and we are actually discovering that we may be able to use intuitive eating much earlier in eating disorder recovery than we initially thought! What exactly is a "set healthy weight?" We really have no clue what any single person is supposed to weigh. At certain points in eating disorder recovery this "set-point" can be an important number, and is determined by past weight experiences... but it's very difficult to actually pin this number down. Our "healthy weight" CHANGES based on our age and other life factors! Some research indicates that being in larger body as we get older can be protective. It's time we change our thought process on what weight indicates! Trying to manipulate someone's weight is going to negatively impact their behaviors. What if the enemy is not food at all, and the enemies are really body hate, the need for control, the value attached to body perception, and the value we hold for the judgment others place on our bodies? We do an activity from When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies, a book that approaches recovery from a feminist perspective. How would we lead our lives if we lived in a world where all bodies were valued, no matter their size? What if we were all considered important and precious the way we are now? We DON'T know what anyone's weight is actually supposed to be, and we probably never will. We just need to accept where our body is at, no matter what. We don't have to fight against our bodies. We need you in this world, as you are now. Food is NOT the enemy! Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter. It is sent out every Tuesday morning and no spam EVER. Do you think if you lost weight you'd finally be free? Are you stuck in a loop of binge--> notice weight gain--> diet--> binge--> repeat? Feel like you would be free from its hellish grip if you could just lose the weight?? Like the binges would cease to exist once the weight was lost?? Do you wonder why you have been trapped in this for decades?? Julie sees what's blocking your path. Listen now for insight. Subscribe and leave a review here in just seconds. Key Points: Content warning: specific weight discussion Healthy vs unhealthy versions of food = food dichotomy = black and white thinking = perfectionism that doesn't even exist. This is a disordered eating pattern and will keep you stuck in this loop. Practice giving yourself permission to eat these "unhealthy foods" although not easy. Can typically take a year for this to stick. Freedom will only happen by not place your worth and value in your weight and weight loss pursuit. Pursuing weight loss keeps us in the disordered eating loop. Keeps foods in that dichotomy. The pursuit of weight loss would enhance the binge/diet loop and enhance the black and white thinking. How do you move away from using weight as a measure of health and worth?? Find a counselor and dietitian who align with these values. When seduced by the fantasy of losing weight be aware that is happening and call it out as the mindfuck that it is. Expect sadness, grief, and anger. You don't need to fight yourself to find freedom. Rather you need to fight the culture. You need to fight body hate in order to find your own food peace. Show Notes: Link to subscribe to the weekly FREE Food Peace Newsletter.
