What makes you excited about your work? How can managers encourage creativity within their teams? In this episode, Dr. Teresa Amabile answers these questions and more. What You'll Learn: 1. What is inner work life and how does it affect your creativity and innovation? 2. How positive emotions lead to creativity. 3. What makes small wins so important to a healthy work life? 4. Setbacks have a negative effect 3 to 4 times stronger than the positive effects of progress. 5. How can you get a positive spiral moving? 6. The importance of meaning in our work. 7. How to include setbacks in your positive work environment. Who is Teresa? As Director of Research at Harvard Business School, Dr. Amabile has had the opportunity to interact with managers at all levels from a variety of industries. Most recently, Teresa collected over 12,000 diary entries from over 200 people working on 26 project teams. These diary entries gave Teresa insight into the inner work lives of the employees, allowing her to parse out what fosters creativity, progress, and ultimately a successful project. The results of this research can be found in her book: The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with Stephen Harvey, an operations-focused HSE professional who takes a pragmatic approach to risk. Currently senior health and safety partner with Origin Energy, he shares his extensive experience of embedding contemporary safety practices and positively impacting organizational safety culture.Steve believes safety management is too boring, and he's on a mission to infuse more fun and connection into the industry. He's passionate about developing relationships with frontline workers and helps safety professionals become a conduit between the office and the field. Steve believes in the power of humor and stories and explains how his hobby - standup comedy - has made him a more effective HSE professional.Language is very important to Steve, and he demonstrates how the words you use can change your organization's safety culture. At the same time, he feels safety data is over-relied upon and highlights the importance of collecting the stories (qualitative research) underlying the metrics to uncover actual safety performance.Another key focus for Steve is unpacking the safety bureaucracy that slows people down, and he has great advice on making checklists more relevant.Steve has an alter ego on Instagram - Safetybhoy, and he explains how embracing social media can make safety more interesting and start new conversions. It's a fun interview, full of great stories and you won't regret connecting with Stephen Harvey! The book about checklists(!) that Steve recommended:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Checklist-Manifesto-How-Things-Right/dp/B07MMNM9Z5Sidney Dekker's seminal safety book that Steve encourages HSE professionals to read:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Field-Guide-Understanding-Human-Error/dp/1472439058Steve also recommends this non-safety book - The Ministry of Common Sense:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ministry-Common-Sense-Eliminate-Bureaucratic/dp/B08P3VW75DThe podcast recommended by Steve:Rethinking Safety ⚠️ on Apple PodcastsSafetybhoy on Instagram:Stephen Harvey | Safety (@safetybhoy) • Instagram photos and videosStephen Harvey on LinkedIn:Stephen Harvey | LinkedInSafety Labs is created by Slice, the only safety knife on the market with a finger-friendly® blade. Kutsuimme vieraaksi Ylämuistialan kartanolle kirjailija ja reserviupseeri Helena Immosen, jonka viime syksynä ilmestynyt Operaatio Punainen Kettu-kirja on karmivan realistinen kuvaus modernista sodasta. Time management issues? Today, we break down the idea of time management from a leadership perspective. But first, you need to understand that there’s no such thing as time management. You see, the person who builds a billion-dollar business has the same “24 hours in a day” as the person who never makes over $50,000. But it's not so much of what you have – it’s about how you use it. Technically, there’s no such thing as time management. But from a leadership perspective, there are three areas that you need to master in your business or organization. In this episode, you will hear: Self-mastery, planning mastery, and delegation mastery Changing your habits to change your life Does it only take 21 days to change a habit? Debunking the concepts of time management and multitasking The Pareto Principle and the Eisenhower Matrix How the human mind can perceive more than 90 days out How to expand your capacity when you reach your time limit The elements of good delegation Subscribe and Review Share your thoughts and ideas with us and email me at stephen@experienceleadership.com. The article discusses how Continuous Integration and Delivery (CircleCI) and Firebase serve as alternatives to older pipeline technologies such as Jenkins and AWS. Andrew Evans talks about the versatility of Firebase CLI utility and its use as a platform for younger developers with little experience on CI/CD or any type of cloud deployment. It took Andrew a year to get proficient in Jenkins whereas with CircleCI he had a much easier learning curve. Andrew then mentions another article he wrote entitled “How the AngularFire Library makes Firebase feel like Magic”. They also discuss whether CircleCI matches up to Jenkins on a larger scale workflow deployment. Andrew gives the example of a weather app named “Goose Weather” he is working on that uses “NgRx” that has a more robust workflow. He mentions that initially he was working on it for a CapitalOne blog but then took it up as a side project and started working on it by himself. They decide that even though Jenkins owns the market on large scale workflows, CircleCI’s ease of use is a very strong feature. Andrew also mentions that although he didn’t have a chance to test CircleCI on a high-level enterprise project, he feels that it would be a good experience. They also briefly compare the Jenkins and CircleCI on ease of rollbacks and license fees. Shai shares his own experience of how he also really likes Netlify because it automates the commit process like CircleCI. They briefly touch on DevOps. Andrew shares his own experience using CircleCI to do deployments to AWS. He feels the documentation and the blogs really help with the learning process. Andrew explains the meaning of: EWS: Elastic Container Service ALB: Application Load Balancer ELB: Elastic Load Balancer” The panelists jokingly wonder whether Andrew should give them 50% of his profits from the weather app Goose Weather because he basically outed himself to CapitalOne on the show by revealing he was working on it on the side. These articles tell of the broad meaning for “Front-End Web Developer” talking of how “HTML + CSS along with JavaScript” all fall under the same title causing confusion with job interviews and even once a developer gets into the job. It is neat to hear perspectives of Alyssa Nicholl and Joe Eames together as Alyssa is more on the HTML/CSS side of Web Dev and Joe Eames is more with the JavaScript side. The panel also discusses difficulties with interviewing for jobs. Charles Wood leads a discussion on what the interviewers could improve on in hiring the people they actually want. In 1985, Mark Malin was gripped by a vision for a different kind of church in Kokomo, Indiana. He wanted to create an environment where people who did not know Jesus could come and begin to explore what it means to follow Him. Fueled by a passion for people who typically wouldn’t attend church, Oakbrook Church was born. From Oakbrook’s early days of meeting in a movie theater to their present days as a multisite church meeting in 3 locations across central Indiana, their mission and vision has not changed. Executive Pastor, Jason Lee from Oakbrook Church in Kokomo, Indiana joins Playlister CEO, Grant Glas. Books referenced in this podcast.
