If you liked The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, you're going to love Gail Brenner Nastasia's memoir, The Fruit You'll Never See. Now a criminal defense attorney in Massachusetts, Nastasia grew up in the fishing town of Gloucester, Mass. where she was introduced at a very young age to the underbelly of adult addictions and perversions. Growing up in a family riddled by mental illness and drug addiction, Gail experienced her childhood trauma as "normal" -- as it was all she knew. In exquisitely honest detail, Gail shares her history of abuse without anger or blame. In fact, she refuses to see the people who subjected her to abuse as bad. They are, she believes, also the victims of their circumstances. Please take a listen to this episode, sisters. For one thing, it's a master class in forgiveness, hope, healing, and moving on. For another, it is, sadly, the very last episode of Sisters Cracking Up. We have spent the last 5 years joyfully interviewing the most incredible of guests who have taught us so much. And we will miss you, our wonderful sisters, who listened in and helped make Sisters Cracking Up the success it is. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A million times over. Signing off with love, Abby and Julie

This week we talked to LA-based singer/songwriter Nastasia Kayleigh. Filled with creative energy, she utilizes photography as a supporting element of songwriting, visualizing the world of a song through a picture. She started singing when she was a child, staring as Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz and knowing she wanted to do that for the rest of her life. “Middle of the Night” is the most recent release from her upcoming album, is a song she is extremely proud of as she incorporated elements of storytelling into her lyricism. She's currency working on a debut album incorporating sounds from pop, country, and nostalgia of the 90's. Find more from her @ Spotify Instagram Find more from us @ Instagram Twitter

Nastasia is truly one of a kind. She's a friend of mine, whom I met several years back through an older acquaintance. She is a unique & witty individual, who has had her fair share of 'Trials & Tribulations' throughout life. We hadn't communicated much in a couple of years and after rekindling on Instagram through funny ass memes and exchanging random views on life, SHE pitched the idea to do a podcast together and just vibe. Without second guessing it, I quickly obliged. This was a wild and funny ass episode! Naz is a comical and outspoken woman, who shares many erotic & emasculating views, as well as her unorthodox approach to dealing with men. Though many of you probably wont agree with her beliefs, they remain very intriguing views and are immensely entertaining. On today's episode, I talk to musician Nina Nastasia. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, Nina began writing songs in 1993 but initially had no real ambitions to be a professional musician. She ended up recording many of those songs with Steve Albini, and they became her debut album Dogs, which was released in 2000. Albini sent the record to John Peel, who championed it on his radio show, and Nina began to garner both fans and acclaim. Since then, she's recorded and released seven albums on labels like Touch and Go and Fat Cat Records, and her latest project, Jolie Laide, is a collaboration with musician Jeff MacLeod, and their self-titled debut album was just released on Oscar St. Records! » questionne Alexandre Monnin. In episode 71 I talk to Marissa Paternoster about Nina Nastasia, an American folk singer-songwriter. A native of Los Angeles, she first came to prominence in New York City in 2000 after Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel began giving her debut album, Dogs, airplay. The album earned Nastasia a cult following, and was re-released in 2004. Her fifth studio album release, You Follow Me (2007), was a collaboration with Australian drummer Jim White of Dirty Three. As of 2022, Nastasia has released a total of seven studio albums, each recorded by Steve Albini. Her musical style has been described as folk and country-influenced with neo-Gothic overtones, often featuring sparse acoustic guitar accompanied by string arrangements.
Gnome trickster Floki Flanfloom leads Jhank, Thronor, Sir Parrik, Caradoc, and Benji to discover what's become of the missing dwarven monk Gorya Bronzevow, who disappeared into a labyrinth within the mountains. Aboveground, his wife Yulia and former mistress Nastasia each lead a faction of the Order of the Burning Forge and conflict simmers between them as each blames the other for Gorya's assumed death. Floki and the adventurers enter the Maze of Moradin looking for the truth, where they encounter bizarre rust myconids and cultish half-mechanical mazefolk, and awaken a raving mad Gorya who is seeking the lost library of Xothol by transforming himself into a metal monstrosity. At a stone bridge over lava, they fight fiery bats and a gargoyle who guards a secret map to the library. Ultimately the party decides Gorya is a danger to their plans and disposes of him in a dramatic manner. They discover a magical forge with the heart of a star and converse with a clingy undead mechanic before making their way back to the surface where they will have to deal with the rest of the dwarves and the consequences of Gorya's death.

It got pretty heavy last week, and whilst we're not apologising for covering such weighty topics, we do understand that some levity is required. In the form of a mighty two hour opus about Nina Nastasia's discography. Yes, you read that right - this episode is two hours long. It is perhaps our longest single episode to date. Even though Nastasia has a smaller discography than many of the artists we've covered in the past, both Chris and Vicki had a lot to say about her work, so we just let the conversation flow. We cover her entire career here, before doing deep dives on The Blackened Air and You Follow Me. There's also a fair amount of hilarity too, which we absolutely won't spoil for you, but suffice to say it really does address the balance after the sombre mood of last week's episode. What do you folks think? Is The Blackened Air her best record? Or is it You Follow Me? Or is it ANOTHER OPTION? Let us know!
This week we have the first of two episodes on Nina Nastasia, as we go deep into her career, decision to vanish from the public eye, recent events and much, much more. It's been a wee while since we did a head-to-head episode, but Chris and Vicki couldn't agree which of her albums was the best, so here we are. Vicki has chosen her second album, The Blackened Air, whilst Chris has gone for her 2007 collaboration with The Dirty Three's Jim White, You Follow Me. But there's a bit of an elephant in the room here that we felt we had to address. As of writing (September 2022), Nina is in the midst of wrapping up press for her most recent album, Riderless Horse. It's a landmark album for her in two ways: One: it is her first album in over a decade. In the time between this album and 2010's Outlaster, she essentially vanished from the public eye, except for one single that she released in 2018 called Handmade Card. Two: it is the first release since the suicide of her partner Kennan Gudjonsson. She has openly stated in interviews recently that Kennan had a lot of input into almost all aspects of her career, so this album, in her view, is also her first ever “solo” album as it is the first time she's ever made music without her former lover. In the press surrounding Riderless Horse Nina has gone into a lot of detail around the nature of her relationship with Gudjonsson, particularly with regards to his controlling, manipulative behaviour and how long it really took her to see it. Needless to say, there was no way we couldn't bring this up in any conversation about Nina Nastasia's music given how integral Gujonsson was, by her own admission, to her music. On this week's episode we chat about some more biographical elements of her life, focusing on her relationship with Gudjonsson, how it effected the music, her personally and the overall trajectory of her career. There is discussion of abuse in this episode, so please bear that in mind before listening. Next week: we talk exclusively about her music, so tune in!

At first, @DameTraveler might appear to be just another Instagram account with pretty pictures, but those who read between the lines understand that the Dame Traveler brand has long evolved to cultivate and empower an impactful community of travelers around the globe. Noticing a lack of Instagram accounts that showcase the work of female travel photographers, its founder, Nastasia Yakoub, began the account in 2014 while on bed rest recovering from a workplace injury. Through passionate dedication and a clear vision, Yakoub grew the account to its some 593,000 followers today. She has also launched the successful Dame Traveler blog and, more recently, published a book titled Dame Traveler: Live the Spirit of Adventure. But so much of how Dame Traveler — an authentic space that encourages independent women to travel — came to be is due to Yakoub's own personal background, principles, challenges and successes. In this episode of Humans of Travel, Yakoub takes listeners through a childhood heavily influenced by her Chaldean-American background; her education and work in nursing; and the very beginning of Dame Traveler, as well as the inspiration behind it. She also reveals how she confronts anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, from solo trips in Italy to long, meditative walks in her home of New York City. Alors, comment faire pour penser “out of the box ?”
