On this episode, join Dennis, Kate, Garrett, Ed, Karen, and returning from her sabbatical is Caitlin! We're talking about the 1986 shoujo sci-fi movie They Were Eleven, based on the 1975 manga series by Hagio Moto, one of the authors who helped bring about the golden age of shoujo manga. Part Among Us, part Survivor, and add in a touch of romance, the new Esperanza crew have to survive 53 days in space, or else they...can't go to space college? There's unfortunate nicknames, space intuition, an emotional support guitar, juicing mice, gender fluidity, plant robots, and a food fight. 0:00:00 - Intro & The Watchlist 0:24:12 - Some Anime News 0:37:59 - Production Notes 0:49:10 - The Exam 1:16:23 - The Esperanza 1:38:50 - The Blue Sun 2:09:10 - The Accused 2:48:19 - Voices, Final Thoughts, & Kanpai Unfortunately, They Were Eleven is currently out of print, but you can still support the show by donating to our Ko-Fi link below. Astra – Avaruuden haaksirikkoiset on Kenta Shinoharan scifiseikkailu, jossa koululaisryhmä yrittää selviytyä takaisin kotiin ja selvittää, kuka heistä on petturi ja miksi heidät haluttiin hengiltä. Ajankohtaisina aiheina puhumme INKR Comics -sarjakuvapalvelun (eli entisen Manga Rockin) uusista käänteistä sekä siitä, miten Seven Seas alkaa julkaista kiinalaisia poikarakkausromaaneja. Kat, Leo, and Bcom discuss the 11th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! Bcom compares the 1986 anime They Were Eleven with its modern counterpart, Astra Lost in Space. The Dumbbell girls celebrate New Years by walking up and ungodly number of steps. The Maidens decide it’s time to protest the oppressive regime at their school, so they can let their freak flags fly! Tanjirou gets the help of some little butterfly girls who help him stretch, train, and breathe in an effort to level up to be an even more effective Demon Slayer. Charce truly becomes Kanata’s right-hand man, in the penultimate episode of Astra Lost in Space, in a manner that causes Leo and Bcom to lose their minds. It turns out Watermelon girl’s watermelon helmet was way more essential than Kat ever expected, and to Bcom’s delight Dr. STONE re-designs it to be an everlasting part of her character design. We wrap up the final episode of Given and discuss how we felt about the way it concluded (or didn’t conclude) its various storylines. Apparently, Smokey the Bear never told the Vikings that “only you can prevent forest fires,” because they find themselves in the middle of a raging inferno. Carole & Tuesday set up for their final episode, with plans for one big concert to try to send a message to the people of Mars who are going down a dangerous path.Recorded October 11, 2019. Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!Returning guest Rachel is back to chat with me about all things related to the anime adaptation of Moto Hagio's sci-fi shoujo, They Were Eleven! Listen as we discuss why this 80s anime (and the original 70s manga it's based on) still resonates with us today, and how Hagio's work was an early introduction to things like classism & gender roles to young anime fans back in the day. All this wrapped up in a cool sci-fi mystery! Since this title is a bit more obscure, we discuss the work relatively spoiler-free up until around the 41:05 mark...after that, plenty of spoiler-filled discussion for those who are already familiar with the work as we dive a bit deeper. Covers They Were Eleven, A, A Prime, and A Drunken Dream, all short works by Moto HagioIn honor of the release of The Poe Clan by Moto Hagio, longtime manga reviewer Kate Dacey (@manga_critic on Twitter) and Shojo & Tell host Ashley take a look at some of Hagio’s shorter works. They talk about how rare and refreshing it is to read a shojo scifi story, Hagio’s influence on the space of girl’s comics, and how the exploration of gender in THEY WERE ELEVEN and A,A' does or doesn’t align with our modern understanding of gender. The Otaku Spirit Animecast hosts have explored many of the archetypes in anime, but never tackled one in-depth. After some recent discussion about the anime trap, they decided to dive into what it is, why it exists, and talk about some of their favorite characters that have come out of it. Topics this episode: The Broken Trap Term, Traits, The Draw, History or Origin, Usages In Storytelling, and character breakdowns! The intro for this episode is the OP for Gatchaman Crowds called “Crowds” by WHITE ASH. The outro for this episode is the OP for Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 2 called “Imawa no Shinigami” by Megumi Hayashibara.
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars. The fifth in the series and the second animated entry, this movie ties in more to the original than any other sequel in the series. After being assigned to a backwater satellite on Mars, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) is stuck training a bunch of novice troops. After learning of a massive bug uprising, Johnny brings his crew to Mars to investigate. Meanwhile, vile things are afoot with Sky Marshall Amy Snapp's (Emily Neves) publicity campaign surrounding the Q-Bomb. Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars delivers a story featuring more satire, more action, and more relevance to the original film. Casper Van Dien and Dina Meyer returning to voice Johnny Rico and Dizzy Flores bring depth to their performances. A live-action remake of the original Starship Troopers is in the works. One hopes it will be less bland than the Total Recall remake. Mat caught Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters and felt it was the most inconsequential Star Wars movie to date. He also appreciated how the Netflix documentary series The Toys That Made Us focuses on the business end of classic toys rather than the collectors themselves. Thrasher enjoyed the trailer for The Happytime Murders, a live-action R-rated puppet film from director Brian Henson. He also liked the tight storytelling of They Were Eleven, a science-fiction anime feature from the 1980s. Ratings for Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars: Mat: Sequel Yes Thrasher: Sequel Yes Follow the show on Twitter @Sequelcast2 Like our Sequelcast 2 Facebook Page The theme song to the Sequelcast is written and performed by Marc with a C. Hosts: Evan "Vampt Vo" Minto, Hisui (Alain) and Narutaki (Kate) Topic: Shjo anime that appeals to guys This episode is also called "The Answer is ALWAYS Golgo 13!" Today I am joined by the Reverse Thieves, a blogging duo that has probably been on this show more than recommended by most physicians, to discuss shojo anime specifically the kind that can appeal to boys as well as its traditional target audience of girls. The four series up for discussion are Ouran High School Host Club, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Rose of Versailles, and They Were Eleven. I have no idea what's going on for next episode, but I can say that Mitchy has been playing Assassin's Creed 2 and I plan to do the same very soon, and we are both itching to talk about Sword of the Stranger. We'll see what happens... next time on Dragonball Z the Ani-Gamers Podcast!

Hell yes it's "engaging!"Oh Animerica, the world is a sadder place without you. Since out last podcast was on stuff that was really new, we decided to check out something that’s a little bit older. So in honor of Cinco de Eleven we talked about They Were Eleven*, an anime adaption of the manga by Moto Hagio. *Hey it was this or Ocean’s Eleven. Which begs the question, if they ever did a sequel using the same premise, would it have been called “They Were Twelve… No Wait, Still Eleven” followed by perhaps “They Could Have Almost Been Thirteen, But Nah! Still Eleven.” And the answer is actually no, it’s “Horizon of the East, Eternity of the West.” Color _me _disappointed. Musical Interlude: Koda Kumi – Taboo (Cynispin Remix)! Perhaps you have hear of Dou(gai)jin Recordings? That group of rag-tag brash musical reimagineers? Well their leader, their Red Ranger if you will, is man known as DJ Cynispin. You can hear the full version of his track, and other awesome tunes in the Dou(gai)jin Recordings 2009 Promo EP. OSMnotes This is Makinami Mari Illustrious. Yeeeep. Like we said in the podcast, now that Central Park Media is gone this DVD is out of print. But you can still find it pretty cheap, if you act on it soon. So here are a few places to buy it. Honestly between the six days ago when we recorded this and today’s release, prices on They Were Eleven and other CPM stuff have already started to go up. And this is a show that every one of you should have in your collection. Did we mention just how awesome Frol is? Frol is one of the most fun characters to watch do their “thing.” And by “thing” I mean “run around being onrey for onrey’s sake.” For a movie like this, good levity is key and Frol is some of the best at it. Keeping our promise, our pact, to you dear listeners you will note that we have to the side the images were talking about of Mari Illustrious Great Gatsby the III. See the wonders of her frog-like nature! Will she actually roll out with some form of awesome motorized wheel chair? Will said wheel chair also have it’s own AT Field? If so, will be represented in it’s eventual inclusion into some Super Robot Wars game? The world may never know. But what we want to know is your opnions! Hence our latest contest: Four wheels of THUNDER! Or something, I dunno. The contest is easy! Simply send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com and tell us what you thought about the new Dragonball Evolution live action film. Perhaps you liked it! Or mayhap you hated it with a passion of a thousand suns. It could even be you are somewhere in between. Hell it can even be about the PSP game. No matter what the opnion is, we want to hear about it. To sweeten the pot, we are giving away two Dragonball Evolutionn posters. One is for our faveorite email, and the second will be an email picked at random. Once you get said poster, do with it whatever you desire. Put it on your ball, or burn it in effegy! We don’t care!
This week we review Air Gear the manga, They Were Eleven and Birdy The Mighty OVA. Also we talk incessantly throughout the news section. Oh well. You're not listening to this show for the intellectual quota. Oni talks about furries (I think), I talk about Bandai Visual USA (I'm sure) and we both talk about Miller and Baileys(I'm certain). Better show notes to follow. It's 2:45am where I am and I'm frigging tired. Finally I have to spologise for the audio quality. I'm still installing all of my old audio programs into the new laptop so bear with us. Well, you'll just have to listen and find out. He's been waiting to join the show for a while but only recently could he do so. The tone of the show is going downhill from here on in. Yes, the hardest working Internet launched anime in history is coming Here's hoping this doesn't turn out to be another Azumanga Daioh...[Link] Also on 25th January just under 1/4 of a million people viewed the special ending of Haruhi from volume 7 of the Japanese DVD when it was posted up on YouTube. A quarter of a million people!?! Have these people no real lives!? Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong person to ask that question... [Link] Mushishi is being courted for a release of it's l;ive action version. God, I must have missed this when it first came out. So, on the podcast no offense was meant to Mushishi fans at all. Betcha one of parties interested in the film was ADV and another was Harmony Gold. I mean without any new licences, they only have Robotech to fall back on for profit. Right? Right!? RIGHT!?! Oh here's that link to Jo Odagiri's ANN page. [Link] Funimation announced they have the rights to Mushishi the anime, Ragnarok The Animation and Suzuka. OK, let's just hope they finally fix their subtitle problems this year....YEAH, RIGHT!!!Christ, I can't escape from Mushishi! And it's been given one of the worst re-titles for this year. BugMaster! (As Weevil Underwood(English Version)): Oh no, you've broken my Great Moth! We hate that voice actors take on Underwood. Also Funimation expand their programming block on their Funimation Channel. Now we can watch more DragonBall then ever before! YouTube and Google reps met with members of the The Japanese Society of Rights of Authors and Composers (JASRAC) and The National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan. With literally hundreds of thousands of copyrighted clips of anime available on YouTube, JASRAC is starting to get nervous. What!?! They're only getting nervous now?!? The GITS DVD we were talking about can be found here but is now out of print. You might be able to find it on Yahoo.co.jp Auctions but it's up to you. And finally, as I promised here is the Wiki Entry on Pentacost Reviews Air Gear Huh? Where's the review? Sorry the section with Oni ran long so it's going to be next week before you can listen to Eeeper review this. Project A-Ko This amazing movie from 1986 remains one of Eeeper's favourite anime of all time and set a benchmark for parodies of anime and manga to come. Captain Harlock, Maison Ikkoku and Fist of the North Star are some of the titles that get poked to death in this treat. Eeeper goes all over the world for sport in this review before actually getting to the PLOT. Try and stay with him on this one, it does pay off. Central Park Media released this movie along with the OVA sequels comprising of the DVD volumes Love and Robots and Uncivil Wars. Oni watched Uncivil Wars but Eeeper didn't so only the first film and part of the OVA's are covered. This film was one of three VHS available to rent from 24-Hour Video in Eeep's hometown (the other two being Giant Robo Part One of the OVA and StreetFighter II: The Animated Movie) so it got serious playtime in the Eeep household.
