To discuss the passing of Val Kilmer, Christian welcomes back to the show Cayley from Once Over with Cayley (AKA Lucy Tightbox from Who Are These Podcasts?) and Adam "Hughezy" / "The H Man" Hughes. Plus, in his prestigious Bladtcast debut, Trucker Andy of the All Apologies podcast and also Who Are These Podcasts. They discuss some of their favorite roles from Val Kilmer's filmography including "Top Secret", "The Island of Dr. Moreau", "The Doors", his one-man shows as Mark Twain and Christian's hot take that he was the best on-screen Bruce Wayne. They also react to some clips from "Life Is Short", "Entourage" and the shockingly brilliant DVD commentary for the film "Spartan".

Send us a textEpisode 170You're born into a world you don't quite fit into. Aberdeen, Washington—blue-collar, gray skies, a town where dreams don't stretch much further than the sawmill. You're just a kid, quiet and sensitive, drawing pictures and listening to music. Then your parents split, and it shatters something inside you. You start to feel like you don't belong anywhere—not at home, not at school, not in your own skin. But then you hear music. The Beatles at first, then punk rock—loud, raw, unapologetic. It feels like someone has finally put words and sound to all the anger and pain boiling inside you. You pick up a guitar and teach yourself to play. It's not about being good; it's about feeling something, anything. You find a friend in Krist Novoselic, and together, you start a band. You call it Nirvana. For a while, it's simple. You're playing shows in dive bars, hauling your own gear, and living off scraps. It's dirty, exhausting, but real. You write songs about the things that gnaw at you—the hypocrisy of society, the weight of expectations, the deep ache you can't seem to escape. The words come easily because they're yours, ripped straight from your soul. Then comes Nevermind. You record it, not expecting much, and suddenly, the whole world is listening. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” blows up, and now everyone knows your name. They call you the voice of a generation, but you don't want to be anyone's voice. You don't even know how to speak for yourself half the time. The fame feels like a prison, the adoration suffocating. People want pieces of you—your music, your words, your pain—but you don't have enough of yourself to give. You find some escape in heroin. It numbs the physical pain—the chronic stomach issues no one can diagnose—but it also drowns out the noise in your head. You marry Courtney Love, and together, you burn bright and fast. She's as chaotic as you are, and you love her fiercely, even when the world tries to tear you both apart. When your daughter, Frances Bean, is born, you want to be better for her. But the darkness is always there, dragging you down.By the time In Utero comes out in 1993, you're exhausted. The album is raw and jagged, a deliberate rejection of the polished success of Nevermind. You want to tell the world, “This is who I am, not what you want me to be.” But the world doesn't listen. They keep asking for more, and you have nothing left to give.In the spring of 1994, you try to escape—to find peace, or maybe just silence. Rome, then Seattle. You write a note. You pick up a shotgun. And then, it's over. But you're still here, aren't you? In the music, in the words. Every time someone plays Nevermind or sings along to “All Apologies,” they're listening to you. And maybe, in some way, you've found what you were searching for all along: to be heard, to be understood, even if it's too late for you to hear it.Music:Smells Like Teen SpiritAll ApologiesSupport the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta
Stone Temple Pilots, often abbreviated as STP, burst onto the rock scene in the early 1990's, becoming one of the most commercially successful bands of that era. Their debut album, Core, was released in late September 1992, and we're highlighting it in January 1993 when many of their hits were on the charts. The DeLeo brothers form the heart of the band: Dean DeLeo's guitar work provides the sonic foundation, and Robert DeLeo's bass playing adds a groove to the band's sound. Eric Kretz anchors the rhythm section on percussion. And front man Scott Weiland completes the lineup with his charismatic presence and distinctive vocal style. Weiland's emotion and raw energy helped make "Core" a pivotal release in the grunge movement."Core" hit he airwaves with a sonic explosion, with an energy that captured the angst and spirit of the early 90's grunge movement. Several tracks from this album would become anthems of the 90's generation, led by tracks like "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing." Despite its commercial success (reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200), "Core" was initially met with poor critical reviews, with many critics considering it too derivative of other grunge artists like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Over time, however, "Core" would receive more positive reviews as it took its place as a seminal release of the grunge movement.Lynch takes us on this journey back to 1993, when the Stone Temple Pilots were introducing themselves to the world. CreepThis song is a slower, more introspective track that highlights the band's grunge influences. The lyrics deal with feelings of isolation and alienation, with Weiland delivering a haunting vocal performance. The acoustic arrangement is a nice contrast to the heavier tracks of the album.Sex Type ThingThe opening track to the album features an aggressive guitar riff and a powerful vocal performance from Weiland. It was controversial due to its lyrical content, which is written from the perspective of a rapist. Despite the controversy (or perhaps because of it) “Sex Type Thing” became one of STP's most recognized songs.PlushThis track is arguably the most famous song from the album. “Plush” showcases STP's softer side with its acoustic guitar intro and catchy chorus. Weiland's lyrics were inspired by a news story about a woman who was found dead in San Diego, adding a layer of mystery and intrigue to the song. The video for "Plush" won the band an MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and features the band playing in various desert scenes.Wicked GardenA hard-hitting rock track known for its gritty guitar riff and energetic chorus, this may be considered a deeper cut. The song deals with the loss of innocence and the darker side of human nature, themes that recur throughout the album. Over time “Wicked Garden” has become a fan favorite and a staple of STP's live shows. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme to Star Trek: Deep Space NineThe third entry into the Star Trek franchise takes place on a fixed space station near the border of the Federation. It had its debut in January of 1993. STAFF PICKS:Love Is On the Way by Saigon KickBruce leads off the staff picks with a one hit wonder. Miami-based Saigon Kick released this single from their second album, "The Lizard," and it went to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jason Bieler provides guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals for the band, and wrote this song. Lead vocals are provided by Matt Kramer. Additional band members were Tom DeFile on bass and Phil Varone on percussion. Regret by New OrderRob brings us the lead song from New Order's sixth studio album, "Republic." The single went to number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. New Order formed from the remnants of the band Joy Division. The album was made in order to save the Hacienda - a Manchester club part owned by the band. Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now) by CrackerWayne's staff pick is from Cracker's debut album, and features catchy, clever, ironic songs. The lyrics take a swipe at late 80's and early 90's folk rock songs. Interestingly, the lyrics do not include the words "Teen Angst." The track got airplay on alternative radio stations, and went to number 1 on the new Billboard "Modern Rock" chart. All Apologies by NirvanaLynch closes out the staff picks with one of Nirvana's most poignant and introspective works from their third and final studio album "In Utero." Songwriter and front man Kurt Cobain describes the song as a tribute to his wife and daughter, but it took on significance as a farewell note of sorts after Cobain's death. COMEDY TRACK:Bedrock Anthem by "Weird Al" YankovicWeird Al channels a couple of well-known songs from the Red Hot Chili Peppers for this prehistoric parody. By 1994, Sinéad O'Connor had established herself as a musical powerhouse willing to take risks behind the microphone and under the hot spotlight of the media. Following up her third album, the 1992 release Am I Not Your Girl?, consisting mostly of jazz standards, O'Connor returned with an album of diverse musical styles, blending elements of folk, rock, and traditional Irish sounds. The mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation, from the trip-hop flavored singles "Fire On Babylon" and "Thank You For Hearing Me," bookend a much more subdued and intimate affair, including a cappella tracks and a hushed cover of "All Apologies" by Nirvana. While some of the 90s electronic production ends up sounding dating, overall the album reflects a generational talent pushing the limits of mainstream music. In episode 67 of Practical Criticism, Rebecca and Ajay surprise each other with songs and compositions drawn exclusively from their respective algorithmically-generated Spotify "Wrapped" playlists! Pieces include Erza Furman's "Can I Sleep in Your Brain"; Linked Horizon's "Guren No Yumiya" (from the Attack on Titan soundtrack); Lucy Dacus's "Night Shift"; The Smashing Pumpkins's "Mayonaise"; Monteverdi's "Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria"; Phish's "Cavern" (from Atlantic City, 10/30/2010); CeeLo Green's cover of "No One's Gonna Love You" by Band of Horses; and Nirvana's "All Apologies." Along the way, the conversation turns to overcoming the All-Roads-Lead-to-Coldplay-Problem of automatic curation, the subtle and the transformative, time changes and genre conventions, unadorned pop and unromanticized classics, the dialectic of sincerity and absurdity, cute aggression and martial pop, fascist aesthetics, narcissistic injury and pathic projection, epics of the ordinary, the strange proliferation of 2-part pop songs, soft edged vs. soft with edges, unleashed elegance, what the machine wants you to listen to, coolness and anomie, the many modalities of anger, musical artifacts and ur-forms, ariosos vs. arias and the nascent opera of the early 17th century, brilliant failures, and, above all, writing soundtracks. Listen to what rises out to shine from the digital (and other) mucks of 2023.

All Apologies and The Hope that Kills You are the final two episodes of Ted Lasso Season 1. Here are my notes for the podcast discussion: Big ticket items to discuss: Guess the Golden Line. Dank "Rape Me" bekamen sie doch wieder Aufmerksamkeit Der Song "Rape Me" gilt als sehr umstritten. In this inaugural episode of Once Every Two Weeks, Mark Ricks and Thom Crowe discuss the revolutionary impact of Nirvana's iconic 1994 MTV Unplugged in New York. They explore the risks the band took in creating a set that looked "exactly like a funeral" and Kurt Cobain's insistence on the lesser known Meat Puppets to join the performance. Nirvana wasn't a stranger to mixed reviews, which is great because that's what they get when we talk about their third and final studio album: In Utero. It turns up on the Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums list at #173.To help us talk our way through this rougher, tougher version of Nirvana is Andy Keatts - the co-host of Rock Docs, a podcast about music documentaries. “All Apologies” by Nirvana is the last song on the band that rocked a generation's third and last album, In Utero. If the last song on an album is an indication of what might come next in musical terms from a band, fans may have had many more textured, beautiful, dynamic songs like it to look forward to, had Kurt Cobain not died at age 27 just months after it was released. Like many of his songs, the lyrics are often misheard, and even those misheard lyrics seem to make sense when he sang them. Unravel the lyrics and story of this haunting and timeless song, forever a reminder of a once-in-a-lifetime talent gone too soon, in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast. Why is it so hard to be accountable and admit when we're wrong? More importantly, why are we so afraid of creating space to have those conversations? This week we look at Episode 9, the penultimate episode, of What Would Ted Lasso Do? - All Apologies - and explore what's at the heart of forgiveness. We also dive deep into the connection between empathy and forgiveness, the perfectionistic tendencies of high performers, the importance of self-compassion, and what the audacity to BELIEVE looks like. “Forgiveness is ultimately about growing from the process. … Oftentimes we forgive people not for them, but [for] us. It's about what we carry and what it does to us. How do you sit down with someone who has destroyed [you] and forgive them?” In This Episode ● Belief, forgiveness and empathy (02:41) ● Difficult conversations and leadership (04:12) ● What do you do when you're wrong? (08:16) ● Why forgiveness is one of the most difficult – and important – things to do (13:41) ● How selfishness can distort forgiveness (19:48) ● The connection between identity and change (23:29) ● The purpose of our inner critic (28:23) ● The audacity of belief (34:49) ● Why we stay in jobs we hate (38:07) ● Performative activism (45:37) ● Asking “What would Ted Lasso do?” in real life (55:20) Resources & Links Mentioned in This Episode Brene Brown on empathy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw&t=2s mPEAK https://www.mpeakcoaching.com/mpeak Big Magic https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/books/big-magic/ Patricia Moreno and intenSati https://patriciamoreno.com/intensati/ #WWTLD · https://www.wwtldpodcast.com/ · https://twitter.com/wwtldpodcast/ · https://www.facebook.com/wwtldpodcast/ · https://www.instagram.com/wwtldpodcast/ Learn More About Dimple Dhabalia ● https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/ ● https://twitter.com/dimpstory ● https://www.instagram.com/dimpstory/ ● https://www.facebook.com/dimpledhabalia ● https://www.linkedin.com/in/dimpledhabalia/ ● Why Radically Human Leadership Is More Important Than Ever https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/why-radically-human-leadership-is-more-important-than-ever ● 4 Steps to Creating A Human-Centered Organization https://www.rootsintheclouds.com/blog/004-4-steps-to-creating-a-human-centered-organization Learn More About Jeff Harry ○ https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/ ○ https://twitter.com/jeffharryplays ○ https://www.instagram.com/jeffharryplays/ ○ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffharryplays/ ○ https://www.youtube.com/jeffharryplays ○ https://www.tiktok.com/@jeffharryplays ■ Building Psychological Safety At Work https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/building-psychological-safety ■ Solve Your Problem With Play https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/coaching ■ Jeff's Positive Psychology Playlist https://www.rediscoveryourplay.com/playlist

Episode 69 covers the third and final Nirvana studio album, 1993's "In Utero." Nirvana intended to depart from the more polished sound of their previous album, Nevermind (1991), with a greater range of sounds and moods. To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, they hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero over two weeks in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and Nirvana's newfound fame. Mark, Kevin, Alex, and Chris take you on a historical journey surrounding the album as well as share our favorites and not-so favorites from the record. We go on a deep dive track-by-track listen of this album as well as share personal stories of discovering Nirvana's "In Utero." Tune in next week for Episode 70 for a wrap-up Nirvana discussion episode where we reflect on what we've gathered from listening to the entire Nirvana studio album discography.Available at https://lightthesky.net/podcasts/nirvana/nirvana-in-utero/ and on all podcast streaming platforms (just search "Light the Sky Podcast.")Follow "Light the Sky Podcast" on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to stay up-to-date with all things LTS.LTS Website: https://lightthesky.net/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lighttheskypodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/LighttheSkyPod1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LightTheSkyPodcast/Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/lightthesky

In episode 47 of the Podcast for Social Research's “Practical Criticism” series, Ajay Singh Chaudhary plays Nirvana for Rebecca Ariel Porte. They talk pop avant-gardes, Kurt Cobain's voice, exhausted croons, experiments in sound, experiments in masculinity, depression and melancholy, Burton's anatomy of melancholy, developing variation, word play, disillusion and disaffection, and Nirvana's Gen X musical legacy in the sonic avant-garde and depressive realism of the (largely feminine and queer) singer-songer writers of today. Songs include: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"; "The Priest They Called Him" by Kurt Cobian and William S. Burroughs; "Pennyroyal Tea"; "All Apologies" and Mitski's "Your Best American Girl." P.S. Our (Millennial) editor Cora would like to note that Mitski is indeed a proper Millennial, not Gen Z as indicated in the episode. PPS. Omitted further thoughts on the class nature of Nirvana hopefully forthcoming. You can read Ajay on generational and class politics in "OK, OK, Boomer: The Critical Theory of Contemporary Angst."

A recap of how we talked to Dean Cameron, Hollywood Palms is a good movie, it’s apricot and cherry season. Will quarantine make us all more patient? Brian has a history of great wedding performances. Traffic still exists, and John Adams liked hookers. What are memories and what are stories? A Gene Hackman movie keeps popping up. Brian’s All Apologies obsession from 25 years ago. Skynyrd is dead (sort of).
The most influential band of the 1990’s or victims of heavy-handed hype from a ruthless record industry? Always controversial, whether as the adopted darlings of the ‘heroin-chic’ fashion press or simply by refusing to play the game; Nirvana never strayed far from the radar of popular culture. This film draws on performance footage from concerts and shows including the MTV Music Awards and Saturday Night Live alongside highlights ranging throughout the entire back catalogue. Also included are in-depth interviews with Kurt’s grandfather, Leland Cobain; Philip Luce, a childhood friend and neighbour; Dave Reed, parental guardian; Warren Mason his guitar teacher and many others, the causes to the worldwide effect that was Nirvana are finally laid bare.Featuring highlights from Smells Like Teen Spirit, About a Girl, Sliver, Polly, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, All Apologies and more.

Welcome back, Helsingers! Battlestar Galactiica alum, Aaron Douglas appeared this week as Colonel Nicholson. He’s there attempting to track down Julius, Violet, Jack and Ivory after they made their televised debut in the previous episode. Of course, the Colonel also seems to have information on Axel’s background and his last official mission. Protecting a certain sleeping Van Helsing. Hit play and listen in as Brad and Cort this week's all-new episode. Violet and Jack go their separate ways in their respective missions. Jack wants to find their father, while Vi is focused on finding those missing pages. What did you think of Violet’s confrontation with the only father she’s ever known? The Dark One is down a Bride after Jack and Ivory infiltrate the Sisterhood in a vulnerable moment for Michaela. The Sisterhood is now #TeamVH. Who saw that coming?!! Not us. Bathory appears far too happy about Willem/Hanson going missing. What is she up to now? How cool was it watching Axel and the Colonel’s interplay? Here’s hoping Colonel Nicholas sticks around for a bit. We need to know more about what’s happening with the world. Two more episodes to go and then the season is done! We’re not ready. Give us a listen and then be sure to drop a comment or in our Facebook group with your thoughts on the episode. You can also send us an email at bradandcorttalk@gmail.com. This week's episode, "All Apologies" was written by Neil LaBute and directed by Lynn Stopkewich.

Can you imagine PJ Harvey walking down a small-town Main Street? Kurt Cobain antiquing in farm country? Yup, that happened. It was all thanks to Pachyderm Studio, a rural recording facility that used to be a family home. In this episode, we'll meet that family, plus a dozen musicians and engineers who've recorded some unforgettable work at the studio. Engineer Steve Albini tells us why Pachyderm is so special, and Lori Barbero from Babes in Toyland shares a story about taking Nirvana to the Mall of America. Music sampled: Lazerbeak - "Winging It"; Nirvana - "All Apologies"; Ramblin' Jack Elliot - "The Buffalo Skinners (On The Trail of the Buffalo)"; Soul Asylum - "Bitter Pill"; PJ Harvey - "50 ft. Queenie"; Babes in Toyland - "Bruise Violet"; Gully Boys - "Dizzy Romantics" Stock media provided by SplashStudio / Pond5

Hann mætir með uppáhalds ROKKplötuna sína klukkan 21.00 Plata þáttarins er In Utero, þriðja og síðasta plata Nirvana, en í dag eru 25 ár síðan Kurt Cobain stytti sér aldur á heimili sínu í Seattle í Washington. Kurt var 27 ára gamall. In Utero kom út 1993 á vegum DGC útgáfunnar. Hljómsveitinni fannst metsöluplatan Nevermind sem kom út 1991 og gerði Nirvana að stjörnum um allan heim aðeins of fínpússuð. Liðsmenn Nirvana töluðu um það eftir að platan kom út og planið var að In Utero yrði mun hrárri en Nevermind og meira í ætt við það hvernig Nirvana hljómaði á tónleikum, sem hún svo sannarlega er. Upptökustjórinn Steve Albini sem gerði In Utero með Nirvana er þekktur fyrir hráleika og einfalda upptökustjórnun. Platan var tekin upp á tveimur vikum í febrúar 1993 í Pachyderm Studio í Cannon Falls í Minnesota. Skömmu eftir að upptökum lauk láku út þær fréttir að útgáfufyrirtækið væri ekki nógu ánægt með plötuna, hún væri of hrá og ekki líklehg til vinsælda og mikillar sölu. Bandið neitaði þessu en þrátt fyrir það var ráðinn maður (Scott Litt upptökustjóri R.E.M.) til að endurhljóðblanda nokkur lög plötunnar, t.d. All Apologies og Heart-Shaped Box sem voru mestu útvarps-lög plötunnar. Steve Albini vildi ekkert gera meira fyrior upptökurnar en hann var búinn að gera. Þegar platan kom út fór hún beina leið í fyrsta sqæti bandaríska vinsældalistans og fékk mjög góða dóma almennt. In Utero hefur í dag selst í meira en 15 milljónum eintaka. They still humbly realise there are still votes to be cast in the Podcast Awards 2011... http://podcastawards.com/ In other news: Matt Ryan is the latest quarterback to realise he isn't as good as Aaron Rodgers; the Bills sent the Eagles to 1-4, making the Dream Team a nightmare; the MLB play-offs mean Nat can't sleep; Don Cherry loves headshots; Helsinki is the capital of hockey; it's still a lockout and David Stern tells us so; sneakers are still huge business; fantasy league update; truth killers brought to justice in Corrections and Clarifications; listener action in Mailbag; new game All Apologies and much, much more...

Even if you've never heard of Christian Berishaj aka JMSN (pronounced Jameson), you have already heard him sing. JMSN sang back up vocals on many of the tracks on Kendrick Lamar's now classic debut record good kid, m.A.A.D city--including the big single "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe." Before that Christian was already an industry veteran, He was part of two major label acts. He was the frontman of a punk band called Love Arcade and he was part of an embarrassing pop project called Christian TV. These two projects taught Christian that he'd rather make music his own way. Even though JMSN sounds a lot like Justin Timberlake, his music is often called PBR&B or Hippy R&B because JMSN looks like he should be working in a marijuana dispensary instead of dancing in his suit and tie. As I walked into the backstage area of the Electric Owl, tendrils of smoke swirled from behind JMSN's dressing room door. Two beautiful women darted past me as JMSN's manger ushered me inside for the interview. Listen to our chat! Tracks played on the show... 1) Kendrick Lamar, Good kid, mA.A.d city (2012) "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" (background/partial) 2) JMSN, JMSN The Blue Album (2014) "Street Sweeper" 3) JMSN, JMSN The Blue Album (2014) "All Apologies" 4) The Game, Jesus Piece (2012) "Pray" (ft J. One Life Left prides itself on its news team. Ann has been with the show as a cub reporter and we've seen her grow into the excellent news journalist that you hear today. But she doesn't really get the support from Simon and Ste that she deserves. As you will hear in this week's episode where the lads don't expect her to get any proper journalism done with respect to Atari and their LGBT statement. You can expect to hear the All Apologies music next week.We didn't have to apologise to our Super-Special Guest this week who was Darren Grey from Roguelike Radio. He managed to help clear up the differences between Rogue and Roguelikes. Luckily we didn't ask him what the difference was between a Roguelike and The Like as it would have gotten terribly confusing. However, after our advice he will have to amend the name of his podcast slightly or he may be hearing from our legal team. Also on the show Simon asks a rather technical programming question. He's changed. Ann thinks of skinny jeans and Ste talks about cricket. They haven't changed. Sega Badawi reads the local news and Super Roger World speaks to his agent. And if you would like to change the list of contributors (by creating a new feature) then send something in to the usual address. Thingy's going to do one again and she's been away for AGES.There's a review of how our second #THIRDSDAY went down amongst the footy fans and Ann promoted the show during the Radius Festival by not actually mentioning the show. But that's because she's a journalist not a promoter. Plus Ste wasn't there to point at her, which is the usual gesture that makes her say our web address.Cheerio!Team OLL xLinks:https://twitter.com/dgrey0http://www.roguelikeradio.com/Track list:1.
