Thomas "Tex" Rosser of Virginia, he is desperate to get this new information to Meade before it is too late. The only problem is that Wilson's entire cavalry division -- over 3,000 men and horses -- is completely cut off from the rest of the Union Army. No one is coming to save him or his men.Notable Quotes"I had had no word from Sheridan that day and knew absolutely nothing as to his whereabouts or even as to the position of any part of the army except my own."-- Brig. Bondo that follows the Overland Campaign led by General Ulysses S. Grant as he drives the Army of the Potomac on its 47-day, 113-mile military campaign South against the Confederacy in 1864. Quotes "Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives, you may win Southern independence if God be not against you, but I doubt it. I tell you that, while I believe with you in the doctrine of states rights, the North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche; and what I fear is, they will overwhelm the South." -- Sam Houston, after refusing to swear an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy to which the legislature of Texas declared his governorship vacant, February/March 1861. Ep.48 - The Future is Nigh Tim and Kyle make their third annual podcast industry predictions about the future of podcasting, podcasting companies, and content in 2021. Episode at a Glance Tim and Kyle share their 2021 Predictions Since we hit 75-percent correct in 2019 AND 2020, these predictions are something you should pay attention too Turns out that Tim and Kyle CAN see the future -- 2-years in a row! Tim and Kyle's Predictions for 2021 Tim and Kyle are constantly making predictions about the Podcast Industry. Here are the predictions Tim and Kyle came up with before 2021: #20 – (Tim) Amazon will be a big player and will be the next one to set up a paywall — (Kyle) Amazon enters the content war by challenging Spotify and Apple with “music, podcast, and audiobook” killer apps. [20.1 - Not only a paywall... but one of the first ones to monetize your podcast.] #19 – (Kyle) Apple will start hosting podcast content and threaten indy podcast hosting companies. This will cause indy podcast companies to start buying out their competitors to form bigger hosting monsters and see the rise of New Podcast hosting companies appearing to support podcasts that have been kicked off of bigger platforms. [Podcast Pontifications with Evo Terra] #18 – (Tim) Disney will set up a paywall for all of their content (including podcast content). #17 – (Kyle) Localization and Local Podcast hubs will finally become a real thing. [Mathew Passy's interest in local podcast discovery] #16 – (Tim) Virtual conferences will increase in attendance outpacing in-person events historically (Podfest Global will beat last year’s record) [Chris Krimitsos' Podfest Events] #15 – (Kyle) Video podcasts will become synonymous with Audio podcasts. Meanwhile, Audio podcasters will have to adapt to the influx of new “video podcasters” but become pretentious “old guard” elitists. #14 – (Tim) Clubhouse will be the next big thing (Like Anchor) when it opens up to Android but will fizzle out quickly unless it is bought out by a big player. (Kyle) Clubhouse will die a quick, unceremonious death this Summer when everyone stops caring. #13 – (Kyle) This arrival of a new standards organization will flip IAB certification upon its ear because it will not be “good enough” for some. The result will create a few NEW standards that will renew the statistics war in podcasting. [Shake-Up at the Podcast Academy] #12 – (Tim) Samson Q9U microphone will come out this year. #11 – (Kyle) Adapt or die – The push for an “improved RSS feed” protocol will gain momentum and force the old RSS feed to finally be phased out. #10 – (Kyle) The number of Spanish-speaking podcasts will overtake English-speaking podcasts in a total number of active shows. [#10.1 - A new iTunes like application will emerge for Spanish Speaking podcasts. #10.2 - A lot more Bi-Lingual Podcasts, and English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations of podcasts.] #9 – (Tim) Apple Podcasts will hit 2-million total podcasts by November, (Kyle) forcing Apple to FINALLY fix their horrible search engine. #8 – (Kyle) Tons of active podcasts will DIE and the number of ACTIVE podcasts on Apple Podcasts will fall BELOW 100,000 as the Content Wars put more and more active podcasts behind paywalls. [#8.1 - Tim thinks below 200,000] #7 – (Kyle) Education-based podcasting will finally formalize to create new and better “podcast universities” where you can actually get a certification or even a degree just from listening to podcasts. #6 – (Tim) President-elect Joe Biden will have a podcast similar to Roosevelt’s Fire Side Chats (that Tim will produce) as (Kyle) every politician in 2021 running in 2022 (or not) starts a podcast — ALL OF THEM! #5 – (Kyle) Hollywood will use podcasting to continue to prototype new TV and Movie content creating a whole cadre of podcasters who become showrunners, writers, and producers for REAL production companies. Additionally, these podcasts will feature a tidal wave of known A/B/C level actors. [Actors in audio drama podcast The Oyster] #4 – (Tim) The first space podcast based in outer space will be started by Space X. [#spaceforce] #3 – (Kyle) The Content Wars heat up as media companies start buying up podcasters, podcast networks, podcast content, or any audio content not nailed down or copyrighted. #2 – (Kyle) Content gets EVEN SHORTER to support smart speaker content exclusively and most big podcasters will have a Shorty version of their shows to adapt to this trend. #1 – (Tim) Podwrecked will reach 75 episodes. [Recount: we actually hit #50 in 2020] Big Thoughts from this Episode "2020 was the year that we had to think about the coming changes; 2021 is the year that we now change how we think." -- Kyle M. You did a good job of explaining what was coming on the show, and what the show was about. The only thing you did, is you introduced the four horsemen at the beginning of the show, and then you did the intro, and then you introduced them again. This time with sound effects, but being that it had only been a few minutes since you introduced them, we had not forgotten them. I would just say, "So the first horsemen we are tackling is.." and went right into it. Then to transition, you can say things like, "Horsemen number 2 of the Racing Apocoplyse is..."If you have any credentials you might want to add that to answer the question, "Why should I listen to you?"If you'd like a full review of your podcast check out Podcast Review Show or if you need Podcast Consulting, Book and Appointment Today Check out our podcasting host, Pinecast. Welcome to the Merchants of Dirt Podcast Episode #30, hosted by Reckoneer.com founder Kyle M. Bondo. This is your insider's guide to practical recreational engineering where I teach you the art and science of building, promoting, and directing off-road races. In this episode, I illustrate how to turn a No into Yes and get into places you’ve never raced before by using an approach that will help you form better relationships with your local trail steward organizations. An Example of a Beautiful Partnership I explore an interesting example found in a recent article in Dirt Rag Mountain Bike Magazine of how to form a relationship with trail stewards The article titled ACCESS: Tomorrow Sometimes Comes - Flood Becomes the Catalyst for a Beautiful Partnership by Ben Davis (DirtRag Issue #199, Pages 54-58, July 1, 2017) talks about how a 2013 flood helped change mountain biking in Golden, Colorado forever. By understanding his story, you not only see how he helped transform the perception of mountain bikers in Golden, but how you too can use this approach to: Build better relationships with trail stewards by being the first to volunteer Take on a servant-first/benefits-second attitude when it comes to your view of trail maintenance Partner with other trail users (e.g. equestrian groups, hiking clubs) can be mutually beneficial Understand why you need to be the one to set the example Call to ActionThank you so much for listening to Merchants of Dirt Podcast. Always Be Racing Building volume has everything to do with the number of races you host in a season. Consider it your racing portfolio and it is an essential part of a new approach I want to teach you today called ABR -- a simple term that means “Always Be Racing”. Welcome to the Merchants of Dirt Podcast Episode #28, hosted by Reckoneer.com founder Kyle M. Bondo. In this episode, you learn why waivers your first line of defense against personal injury lawsuits and remind you that it is your duty as a race promoter to avoid being negligent. Having a Solid Liability Waiver is VitalAll off-road sports are inherently dangerous and involve clear risks, but so is not having a well-written liability waiver. Not only are waivers your first line of defense against personal injury lawsuits, but they remind you that, as a race promoter, it is your duty to avoid being negligent. By making your racer’s sign a liability waiver, you require them to read and acknowledge that they assume the risk of injury that could result from a race. However, it also reminds you that a waiver only covers you to a point. You should probably know the answer to this question long before you ever hold your first race. Sponsor Spotlight - Reckoneer.comReckoneer.com is your #1 resource for the race promoter who didn't major in business. Enjoy the best lessons learned in event design, race management, and race promotion that will help you grow your racing business, or give you a place to START on the path to becoming successful off-road race promoter! Build better races with Reckoneer.com today Steps to a Good WaiverWhen you’re ready to start changing, start applying the techniques of: #1 — Don’t make it up yourself In classic liability waiver cases, a racer injured while participating in your off-road race will have a questionable liability claim due to their signing of a liability waiver. That is if your liability waiver is valid and enforceable. Don’t try to save a few bucks and leave yourself unprotected by trying to create a weak liability waiver yourself. #2 — Don’t race without knowing your State’s law Liability waivers in most States are a mixed bag of legal issues when it comes to enforcing them outright. In simple terms, a liability waiver does three things for both you and your racers: It informs them that off-road racing is inherently dangerous and involve clear risks It limits their right to sue you in the event of injury It provides an assumption of risk defense that can be utilized by you in the event of a legal claim #3 — Don’t be surprised when you get sued Unfortunately, being sued is a part of being in the race promotion business. We all know that injuries are going to happen, and most are going to be self-inflicted. But regardless of the liability waiver, an injured racer’s signed, a few will still try to come after you for damages. The study cited by Stites & Harbison stated that of the over four million extreme sports injuries reported between From 2000 to 2011. many of them showed that exculpatory clauses (e.g. liability waivers) were found to valid and enforceable under common law principles. When the exculpatory clauses (e.g. liability waivers) violated public policy or the damage was the result of willful or wanton conduct on the part of the defendant, they were found to be not valid and unenforceable. In other words, when the injury is a result of the race promoter’s gross negligence or deliberate misconduct, the liability waiver did not provide any legal protection. Show Notes Welcome to the Merchants of Dirt Podcast Episode #25, hosted by Reckoneer.com founder Kyle M. Bondo. This is your insider’s guide to practical recreational engineering where I teach you the art and science of building, promoting, and directing off-road races. In this episode, I talk about what strategies you can use to improve your next events registration numbers. How to sell out your race How Pre-Registration Works: Getting an event set up on an event registration site gets your event on their front page, in their search engine, and out on the Internet for your racers to hopefully find. This allows you to generate a cash flow long before your event’s race day. The Pre-Registration Sellout Myth: Popular events have created a huge mythos around the success of online pre-registration. This has created a false impression for most new race directors that think that pre-registration is the end all and be all of getting folks to their races. Unfortunately, what registration websites do not provide you with is a guarantee that racers will actually register early. Low Pre-Registration Fallout: Additionally, professional timing companies (especially the ones with those nice radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips) don’t come to races that cannot attract more than 100 pre-registered racers. But to make matters worse, venues like State and Regional parks also have issues with low pre-registration turnouts. Pre-Registration Tactics #1 – Create a Brand Identity: Create an event name that is memorable, not boring. A customer that can remember the name of your event will most likely remember it nine months later when it comes time to sign up and race it again. #2 – Create Collateral: Develop your own trail maps, event flyers, and branded materials that you can give to racers and businesses. Having handouts — both printed and digital — is a quick way to share your event without having to explain it over and over again. #3 – Have a Real Website: A real event website not only states that you are serious about producing your event but also creates a home for building a branded product. #4 – Create Advertisements: Now it’s time to get the word out to your audience and inform everyone that one of your event dates is approaching (within three months). This is when you open your pre-registration site or page on your website, advertise how early registration can save them money, and add any new info (videos, blog posts, sponsors) to your website. #5 – Open Pre-Registration: If you’ve primed the engine of anticipation with your customer base and determined your graduated pricing levels and change dates, you can now finalize and open pre-registration at least two months before your event. Final Thoughts The Early Promoter Catches the Racer. Proper planning and early management of your event are critical to giving you enough time to effectively change tactics if things start to go wrong. Without the luxury of a time cushion, attempting any of these steps within only a few weeks of your race will most likely end in low turnout or worse, having to cancel your event. If you follow the above five tactics as part of your event management process, your pre-registration numbers should improve. And now you know. Coming Up Next In our next episode, I had the chance to interview Cy Sack from Adventureracehub.com. Cy gets into the analytics surrounding Adventure Racing and gives us a view into the State of American Adventure Racing that you will not believe. That makes SSB Racing only one of two Adventure Racing promoters to do any 24-hour events in Virginia. You can find out all about these epic races over at sbbracing.com. Mark gets into all of this and more! Coming Up NextI’m going to get into strategies you can use to improve your race registration numbers. Welcome to the Merchants of Dirt Podcast Episode #22, hosted by Reckoneer.com founder Kyle M. Bondo. This is your insider’s guide to practical recreational engineering where I teach you the art and science of building, promoting, and directing off-road races. In this episode, Michelle Faucher and I walk step by step through her latest adventure race launch and we learn how to Brake the Habit. Interview with Michelle Faucher Adventure racing is one of those sports that is really a bunch of sports all wrapped into one big sport. It’s like an off-road triathlon in the woods, but with canoes... and orienteering... and maps... and you get to decide the course. Wow! Adventure racing is really NOT like triathlon at all! So how would you ever go about building one of these races? I get a chance to talk a little Adventure Racing 101 with Michelle Faucher, Founder and Executive Director of Adventure Addicts Racing. There are a lot of reasons to want to pay attention to what Michelle and Adventure Addicts Racing is doing. AAR currently produces not one but four Adventure Races a year -- probably THE toughest formats to build in off-road racing. And if that wasn’t tough enough, they are involved in hosting this year’s XTERRA Charlottesville. Michelle is also the ONLY race promoters in the United States to produce a Women Only Adventure Race -- called The Buff Betty! You can find out all about these epic races over at adventureaddictsracing.com. Michelle gets into all of this and more! Call to Action Thank you so much for listening to Merchants of Dirt Podcast. Get Lost in Season 1: Trek and Trail Master the endurance sports that make up off-road racing by learning what they are, how they work, and what makes them great. What the heck is Get Lost Racing? The Get Lost Racing Podcast, hosted by Kyle M. Bondo, is a podcast about defining off-road racing disciplines! Each episode takes a look at an off-road sport and explains what it is, how it works, and how you can experience it. How am I going to do that? By teaching you what they are, how they work, and how you can experience them. One discipline at a time. Why one discipline at a time? Ask yourself, "What is off-road racing?" Some define it as a format of racing where various classes of specially modified vehicles compete in races through off-road environments. Where does a mountain bike fit into that definition? Isn’t a mountain bike race an off-road race? Then you get someone to raise their hand and ask, "Don’t you mean endurance racing?" To which others define endurance racing as a form of motorsport racing which is meant to test the durability of equipment and endurance of participants. Motorsports again! Only this time its teams of multiple drivers attempt to cover a large distance in a single event. Sound like the motorsports rampage of the Baja 1000, not the mountain bike endurance race of the Whisky 50. Still, others might try to call it endurance sports. So what is endurance sports? Now, this is where it starts to get tricky. Endurance Sports is a relative description of just about any sport depending on the nature of the athlete in the sport. It could go on to describe any intense effort that lasts over 1 or more hours. A trail runner could consider a 5-mile run as an endurance sport, while an ultra-trail runner doing 100 miles would feel very differently from that definition. You could be overly scientific and determine that endurance sports are prolonged efforts in which you use your aerobic system more than your anaerobic system. Or you could use my definition, which is an off-road sport (like a 12-hour adventure race) that starts off fun, but then at some point in the middle, you find yourself saying, "Why do I do this?" Only to come full-circle about 10-minutes after it's all over, loving what you just did and wanting to do it again. The point is, off-road or endurance sports are very hard to define. No matter how you try to define it you'll always be left with someone pointing out that you forgot to consider one sport or another. The Mission of Get Lost Racing The Get Lost Racing Podcast is an attempt to explore each would-be off-road and endurance sport I can find, and find out what makes it tick. My plan is to select only sports that meet these three rules: #1 - It can’t have a motor #2 - It must take place in a rural, rugged, or non-paved environment, and #3 - It must look somewhat fun to race If it meets those rules, it's on the list. So far, those rules create a very long list! But it also provides plenty of off-road and endurance sports to chose from as I go through each one. We’ll see if changes over time. And we’ll also see if I can find some definitions for off-road and endurance sports that can improve on what's out there now. I Look Forward to you Listening Meanwhile, I look forward to having you join me on this journey of sports mastery. My wish is that you find some of these off-road sports interesting, and maybe even try a few yourself. Until then, I hope you Get Lost Racing!
