Welcome back to a great episode about bodies, minds, aging & perspective. We - Nicole & Sarah - are of an age where our bodies have displayed signs of the wear and tear we put ourselves through in our earlier decades. These issues have caused not only physical pain, but emotional pain as well. Today we explore what happens when our bodies stop doing what we want them to do - and how it affects our headspace as well.  We talk about: When you break, you can come back stronger How to shift our identities when they are so wrapped up in "what we do" and not "who we are." Perspective is key When you can't fix yourself on your own - and need to turn to medicine & more We even mention female fitness icon (and so much more), Jane Fonda, and her philosophy on fitness in her 80s.  Just for you, our listeners, use code POD20 for 20% off Skirt Sports and Momentum Jewelry.  Tune in weekly-ish to hear us riff on the topic of the moment. Money has always been a taboo topic. This topic is perfect for the holidays. While some of us are able to find and connect with our people during this time of year, many others go through huge waves of loneliness - from loss, distance or pandemics. While we want it to be a time of connection, it is often the opposite.  Instead of feeling despondent and helpless, we share some ideas on how you can take action and find your people.  1) Think about your current core beliefs. The best tribes share values. 2) Practice unconditional self-acceptance. Stop saying "I'll finally fully love and embrace myself after I achieve xyz!" 3) Make room for "and"  4) Prioritize healing yourself.  At the end of the day, you won't make progress unless you're willing to put yourself out there. Two years ago, Nicole received an email from Sarah Ratzlaff, a follow up from six months prior when Nicole was looking to do a cross-promotion for her business Skirt Sports.  Nicole's response: "No I'm not looking for a cross-promotion right now, but if you want to buy my business, I'd love to talk." Thus began one of the most important relationships in both of their lives, and the framework for the baton hand-off of Skirt Sports was sparked. How it started: May 6, 2020 Nicole was sprinting down the finish chute, slapping hands, and dealing with all the emotions that arise when the end of a huge race is near. Sarah was sitting in the grassy field in the middle of the track watching the events unfold around her, thinking about which one she wanted to do next. How it's going: May 6, 2022 Nicole is chilling out on the high jump mat, recovering after her long race, cheering on her teammates as they zip around the track Sarah is sprinting lap after lap after lap. Working hard, pushing her limits & taking in all the support she can along the way.  When is the last time you took a snapshot of an important moment in time and analyzed what has changed since? It's easy to think that you're not really getting a lot done, but when you really start checking the boxes, you realize you've been more successful, busy and productive than you ever imagined.  Today: Take a moment to list out what you have done in the past two years. Whether we choose to add it, it is forced upon us, or someone else dictates the new-ness, we must adapt to the change or face a life of misery and suffering! Nicole recently got a puppy. Her last puppy was 20 years ago when she and Tim were 30, with boundless energy and no child! When their child was born 10 years ago, Wilder literally joined this world a dog-whisperer. It was obvious she NEEDED a dog. Last year, they decided on a french bulldog due to Instagram reels of love and cuteness (not really, but kind of!). On Christmas, they committed. Pickle DeBoom joined the family in April.  And all hell broke loose!  Nicole asked Sarah to help guide her through this stage of newness, of change, of adding something to a perfectly happy life that has the power to create angst, imbalance, and fear of constant accidents on the carpet!  As they talked, it became obvious that Nicole's puppy counseling far transcends that experience. The lessons and advice apply to anyone who is facing change in their lives.  Notables: The plan is great in concept but a flexible mindset is the key to success since plans rarely (or never!) go accourding to plan! It's important to eliminate an attachment to outcome. The beginning: It feels like chaos. You don't have the skills, routine or bandwidth to deal at first. Meltdowns are to be expected. How do we persevere? How do we not "return to sender" when times are tough? STICK-TO-IT-IVE-NESS! Persistence is key. Literally - hang in there - it will get better! The truth is you have 3 options: Send it back Incorporate it into your life Use it as an opportunity to carve a new path, a new Identity, a new exciting future. It's up to you.

It's an important topic especially in light of last week's conversation about imposter syndrome.  Notables: Women have historically tried to shrink their bodies which carries over to their minds.  Sara's goal is the opposite; to help women take up space We ask for permission partly because it has been modeled that way - women have been trained to ask for permission before we allow ourselves to do things Own your superpower: Be really clear about what we're good at. Say it out loud. How do you identify your superpower? It's often what we're naturally good at, what feels easy to us. It's okay to pick the easy thing, Give yourself permission to not be good at everything. For moms who are raising boys: What do we do to help them support strong girls and women? Honesty - Imperfection - Connection How do they fit together and why is it important to nurture and embrace them? Honesty: Honesty builds trust. Honesty and transparency are friends. Being transparent is important even while you protect yourself and your privacy.  Imperfection: There is no perfect, yet most of us want to portray an image of perfection, even as we are built on imperfections! When we allow others to see us as the imperfect humans we are, we grant ourselves freedom to be exactly who we are, to stop apologizing and to stop spending time and energy trying to seem perfect. Being imperfect is relatable. Being imperfect is endearing. Let's be clear that by sharing our imperfections we want to make sure that it doesn't tear down our self-esteem.   Connection: This is what makes the world go round! Notables: Sarah shares that she has always struggled with connection because she's so afraid of sharing her imperfections.  The Bullshit Factor: Everyone has it, it's just a matter of how much.  How much do we share? Is there a line between being honest and too honest with our imperfections? Part of the beauty of sharing vulnerable things is to gain comfort in the fact that you are not alone. If we are perfect, or appear to be perfect, we can avoid criticism. This is valid because criticism is hard to hear! So our ask for you today is this - Share something that you perceive as an imperfection & see what happens. ❤️

We all have ideas all the time. Some are worthy of pursuing. Some are worthy of building a business on! But how do we know which ones? Listen to Sarah and Nicole discuss all things IDEA! Start with your own gut: Does this idea include your passion, your expertise? Is it something you could wake up and do everyday? Does it inspire you? Having ideas is scary mainly due to the fact that we worry about what other people think, namely that they may think our idea is stupid.  Take baby steps to put it out in the universe: Say it out loud to yourself. Today we hear from community-builder & movement-maker Maria Solis Belizaire. Activist, Speaker and Marathoner, Maria is the Founder and CEO of Latinos Run & Latinas Run, two national organizations that promote running as way to improve physical and mental health of the Latino community. As a child, Maria was actively involved in athletics, but as she entered her teens, life would take a turn for the worse when her mother became incarcerated. As a way to deal with adversity, Maria turned to running and became a member of her high school track team. Years later, her twin sister invited her to take part in a local fun run which became the first organized race she would enter. Soon after Maria would be introduced to an Ultra Marathoner who encouraged her to join their local NYRR's club with a goal of completing her 1st NYC Marathon. From that day on, running became a life changing experience for her. After participating in countless races across the United Sates including six marathons with family and friends, Maria began to think about the impact health had not only on herself but others in her community. Having lost her mother and friends from cancer and other heath issues including obesity and heart disease, she knew she had to do more. In 2016, unable to find a group that catered specifically to Latinos, she decided to take action and form the running group Latinos Run in honor of her late mother Miriam Calderon Solis. Soon after she would form a sister group Latinas Run which focuses on Latina Women. Throughout the year, Maria travels extensively throughout the United States to meet other Runners and empower Latinos to lace up and get Running. She is also a frequent lecturer and a powerful voice for the underserved in her community. Today we talk about the power of finding purpose in your passion, and harnessing that passion into a business that helps others. Things we talk about: When work is your passion, it doesn't feel like work. Collaboration is key - "I don't know everything." Have a vision. Write it down. Don't be afraid to do it.  Why safe spaces are important. The big questions are "Why?" and "How do we stop ourselves?"  Today we talk with Dr Candice Seti, author of The Self-Sabotage Behavior Workbook: A Step-by-Step Program to Conquer Negative Thoughts, Boost Confidence, and Learn to Believe in Yourself.  We define self-sabotage as "engaging in behaviors that stand in our own way." Think about it. You say you want to do something, then you stand in your own way! Why we do this is fairly simple - fear. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of change.  Candice has identified 9 different type of self-sabotagers - we talk about all of them today and different ways that we can Stop the Sabotage!  For more on Dr Candice Seti, check out her website and buy her book!

Saying yes seems to be the path to all of these things. What we've learned over our lifetimes is that saying no just may be even more important!  Today we talk about the Power of No in our lives.  Takeaways: 1) We only have so much to give. When you say yes to something, you say no to something else. Which is more important?  2) Observe your behavior when you say yes. If you're not sure, "Sleep on it." 3) Build up your NO arsenal. Work on all the ways you can say no while still maintaining a positive environment around you.

(and some takeaways!) The standard of perfection is made up, often by someone else who has no idea who you are and what your life and circumstances are. Consider this scenario. Someone we love is blaming herself for a situation and using negative self-talk to punish herself. What do we do? Generally, we try to help her turn the situation around, see the positive and eliminate the negative self-talk.  Why then is it so difficult to do that for ourselves?! We wouldn't talk to others that way, why do we talk to ourselves so negatively?   Today we have a conversation about the process of acceptance and self-forgiveness with Mindset Coach Melissa Wolak. Make sure you listen all the way to the end, there are some surprises in store!   Takeaways - the process of self-forgiveness 1) Ask yourself, "What emotions am I actually feeling right now?" Name them. This will help you accept. 2) Check in, "How would you talk to your best girlfriend?" Shift so that you are talking this way to yourself too. 3) Acceptance of where you actually are 4) Recognition: What was I actually trying to achieve? 5) Be patient. Compassion. 6) Check your expectations - think about your "should"

Meredith Atwood is a speaker, writer, coach, podcaster & more. Her work is about empowering women to change their lives and reach their goals.  But what she's currently making waves about is not the work she does with other women, but the work she has recently had done on her own body.  After years of frustration with the loose skin on her belly (she calls it the "apron") due to childbearing and weight loss, she decided to have a procedure that included both a "tummy tuck" and ab muscle repair to bring her abs muscles back together. Her goals were not to look hot, although she admits this is a great side effect, but to kick some ass on the weightlifting stage.  In true Meredith Atwood form, she has been open, vulnerable and honest about her journey. We decided it would be a perfect time to get her on the show to talk about our changing bodies, our rights to make our own decisions about our bodies, and how to deal with other people's opinions about our own decisions.  You will learn about the actual process that Meredith went through, but more than that, this episode is about the ultimate goal we all hope to achieve someday: Love and acceptance of our own bodies - however we need to get there.  Takeaways:  1) Meredith Atwood is awesome and we're so happy to know her! 2) You CAN change your life, step by step, just keep showing up. Keep following a path even if you don't know what it is and look inside at what is happening in there. What are you covering up? Keep trying to solve that little by little.  3) The minute you say, "I have got this," you need to turn around and dig back in because the universe is going to show you that you don't. 4) When you realize something is taking up too much negative headspace, that is the moment it is time to make a change. We wrap a lot of emotion around our food, and we often tie negative emotions to our food journeys. We are starting a series on Eating & Nutrition that starts with our own food journeys. In this episode we open up about our relationships with food and how what we put in our mouths has impacted our health, self-esteem and more.  We also recognize that many people suffer from disordered eating of all kinds. Our goal is not to minimize anyone's struggles with food, but to normalize that we both have complicated histories with food and eating. In other words, we want to emphasize that you are not alone!  We called this episode the Eating Confessional because it felt like a safe place to share the highs and lows of our own journeys, not because we think there are any sins involved in eating! Takeaways: 1) Eating has to be about what feels good to you. Every body is different. 2) The side effects of experimenting with eating patterns will lead to empowerment. 3) If there is negative self-talk in your head, think about this question, "Who wins when I feel this way? Who benefits when I feel bad about myself?"
