Our 24 day really starts when go to sleep.  If slept well, we will be more productive.  If not, it will be a less productive day. The saying “get twice as much done in ½ the time” is a myth. The thought of trying to do that raises our anxiety --- we work less effectively with less clarity when we are anxious. Build downtime into the white spaces of your schedule. Know what is your “go-to” downtime technique to clear your mind and how to get to a calm state. The starting point is knowing your “capacity of time” for each day AND how much time task(s) will take.  Then schedule accordingly. Know what routines/checklists really work for you. Build more of them into your day if you can – adds to your efficiency and gives your brain a rest from decision making. If you are only eating sweets once a week instead of once a day, you can prevent the addition of those holiday pounds. Lastly, be sure to set limits on your day, both work and night life. How often are you looking at your skin? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You should do a thorough skin evaluation on yourself at least once a year. Make sure someone else is also checking those hard to see places, like your back. Believe it or not, 70,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year right here in the United States. When looking at moles, notice any changes, irregular borders, the color of the mole, and the size. Talk to your doctor about the moles you have and don't assume they are nothing to worry about. If caught early, skin cancers can be removed and the cancer can be stopped. Also, be sure to use SPF 30 when out in the sun and use it year round, not just in the summer months. If you have ever been around a preemie, you know how fragile they are. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The special intravenous nutrition is what helps preemies thrive outside the womb. The University of Montreal made a great discovery which may save the lives of hundreds if not thousands of preemies. They studied babies between 26-31 weeks being fed intravenously with a highly nutritious substance. When's the last time you inventoried your medicine cabinet? That's probably too long. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today's tip is all about cleaning out the bathroom cabinet. Things like cough medicines, sunscreens, antiseptics, and even bandaids can expire and go bad. Expiration can either mean that they are no longer effective or safe. When you start your inventory and replenish task, look for expiration dates, unsealed packages, bandaid wrappers that have discolored and toss them out in the trash. Even sunscreen from last year should be replaced, especially if you exposed it to high temperatures. Just remember to keep a list of what you throw away so that you can replace it. There's nothing worse than headed to the cabinet only to find that your peroxide bottle is empty or you don't have any antibiotic cream for a cut. Keep your medicine cabinet neat, tidy, and up to date because it's something you normally don't' think of until it's too late. Are you fan of e-cigarettes? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. E-cigarettes are being passed off as a healthy option for smoking, but they come with real health risks. So you decided to stop smoking regular cigarettes or you think it might be cool to start “vaping.” Well, not so fast. The New England Journal of Medicine has reported that these e-cigarettes may contain high levels of a chemical like formaldehyde. As you know, formaldehyde causes cancer. Currently, e-cigarrettes are not regulated and the FDA is trying to decide the best way to monitor the health risks. My advice to you – don't even think about it. First of all, you don't look cool. Secondly, it's not worth the risk. If you need something to do with your mouth – try keeping healthy snacks on hand– but don't try e-cigarettes or any type of cigarette for that matter. What do you really know and understand about Parkinson's disease? This is Judy Gaman and this is you Stay Young Medical Minute. Parkinson's effects about a million people, with around 50,000 new diagnosis each year. When someone has Parkinson's they lose control of their muscles, effecting the way they walk, their speech, and their ability to do daily activities. New research has found that exercise may make a significant difference, improving the lives of those effected by Parkinson's. Boxing, dancing, and Tai Chi have all been found to improve movement and help lesson symptoms. The key is to stick with the exercise. Do it two to three times a week and within six months there should be a significant change. Trainers have reported an improvement in patient's ability to walk, as well as improved strength and control over daily activities. So if you or someone you know is effected by Parkinson's its time to make regular exercise a priority. Look for programs in your area that are specific for Parkinson's patients. Do you have a nagging cough from allergies or lingering after a cold? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A nagging cough can be so annoying and disruptive. I suffer from cold hands and feet, almost on a daily basis. If you're like me, you need to understand the cause. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Those cold hands and cold feet may be telling you something. Everyone gets cold when they are exposed to the elements, but some people can get cold hands and feet even when sitting in a warm room. This could be a warning sign, so if you suffer from cold extremities, talk to your doctor. There are a number of things you may need to be checked for. For example, diabetes, thyroid disorder, circulation issues, or even Raynaud's. Who knew those cute little fish could have such health benefits. I remember being a child and it seemed that most houses had an aquarium, including mine. Research shows that watching fish lowers stress and anxiety, almost like a form of hypnosis. People who own aquariums have lower blood pressure and tend to sleep better. The holidays are just around the corner. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you prepared for this holiday season? I am not talking about presents, parties, and wrapping. I am talking about setting your goals and establishing limits. Start now and define exactly what your holidays are going to look like. For example, don't over schedule, set a limit of perhaps 5 parties over the course of two months. Also, give yourself a cheat day when it comes to food. If you are only eating sweets once a week instead of once a day, you can prevent the addition of those holiday pounds. Lastly, be sure to set limits on your day, both work and night life. You need to be sure you are getting enough sleep so that you can function during this busy time and not get burned out. A little prep can make your holidays healthier and more enjoyable. How often are you looking at your skin? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You should do a thorough skin evaluation on yourself at least once a year. Make sure someone else is also checking those hard to see places, like your back. Believe it or not, 70,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year right here in the United States. When looking at moles, notice any changes, irregular borders, the color of the mole, and the size. Talk to your doctor about the moles you have and don't assume they are nothing to worry about. If caught early, skin cancers can be removed and the cancer can be stopped. Also, be sure to use SPF 30 when out in the sun and use it year round, not just in the summer months. Here we go with yet another study that proves it's time to put down the cigarettes and alcohol. Not only do they make you look old, they are aging you rapidly on the inside. A study published in the American Society of Human Genetics has given us even more proof that heavy drinking and any amount of smoking or even exposure to smoke, accelerates the aging process dramatically. Next time you are tempted, take a look at that bad choice and ask yourself “Is this really worth giving up my youth?
