In this episode, the trio breaks down the Tamil film Good Bad Ugly starring Ajith Kumar in three parts — the good, the bad, and the ugly — just like the title promises but never delivers. They start with the Good section, appreciating the brief glimmers of hope the movie shows in its stylish opening, only to see it spiral into chaos. The Bad part dives into the film's meandering plotlines, lazy mid-section, and character arcs that go nowhere fast. Finally, the Ugly section wrapped up with a hilarious imaginary pitch meeting where the director convinces Ajith with, “Sir, this is like all your greatest hits — but louder, slower, and with three heroines who exist only in flashbacks,” leaving everyone wondering if this film was a tribute or a parody in disguise.---------------------------------Support Us---------------------------------------- Support The Modern Akatsuki if you feel like it . I first met today's guest, Ajith, when he emailed me with a couple of questions back in 2024. He'd come across The Happy Saver while on the hunt for some motivation to keep pushing towards the goal that he and his wife Arya have to become debt-free by his 39th birthday, which is in 2028. When they began to lose patience and motivation, hearing both my journey with money and that of others helped to keep them on track. This couple are in their mid-thirties, with an eight-year-old daughter and live on the East Coast of the North Island. When I spoke with them at length in October of 2024 and again in February 2025, they were debt-free except for the $223,000 mortgage they have on the home they had built in 2021. They have also been investing in their KiwiSaver plus in investments outside of KiwiSaver. I wanted to share their journey today because his email to me and our subsequent kōrero threw up the dilemma of paying down debt fast vs investing. I think you will enjoy it.

In this episode, Monika explains why investment planning is just one piece of the larger financial planning puzzle. Many investors focus solely on where to put their money but overlook critical aspects like cash flow management, risk protection, and long-term goal setting. She walks listeners through the fundamentals of financial planning—starting with tracking expenses and setting savings targets, then building essential safeguards like an emergency fund, medical insurance, and life insurance before even thinking about investments. She emphasizes that true financial security comes from having a well-structured plan that includes retirement and estate planning, not just picking the right stocks or mutual funds.Monika also breaks down the concept of an asset, clarifying common misconceptions. An asset isn't just something you own—it must generate income or appreciate in value. From stocks and bonds to property and even a taxi used for earnings, she explains how different assets work and why some, like insurance policies, don't qualify. Understanding assets is key to making informed investment decisions, and Monika highlights why a thoughtful approach to asset allocation is essential for long-term wealth creation.Listener queries bring up diverse financial concerns. Himanshu Sharma from Wellington questions the need for asset allocation when small caps tend to outperform over the long term. Dr. Aishwarya from Bengaluru faces major life decisions, including moving cities, having a baby, and buying a home, while managing a partner who prefers to keep his money in a savings account. Finally, Dr. Ajith from the UK seeks Monika's insights on whether index investing in mid- and small-cap funds is a smart strategy.Chapters:(00:46 - 08:01) Why investment planning is just one piece of financial planning(08:02 - 08:56) Understanding assets: What qualifies and what doesn't(09:31 - 12:08)Asset allocation and compounding (12:10 - 14:43) Balancing homeownership, career moves, and family planning (14:45 - 16:44) Index investing in mid and small caps If you have financial questions that you'd like answers for, please email us at mailme@monikahalan.com Monika's book on basic money managementhttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-money-english/Monika's book on mutual fundshttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-mutual-funds/Monika's workbook on recording your financial lifehttps://www.monikahalan.com/lets-talk-legacy/Calculatorshttps://investor.sebi.gov.in/calculators/index.htmlYou can find Monika on her social media @monikahalan. Of Concepts and Methods is K. Murali's new collection of essays, which covers a wide range of topics that are tied together by the author's ongoing endeavor of “deepening the critique of mechanical thinking.” Written mostly in prison, these texts grapple with different trends of post modernism which have had a stranglehold on “new” thought for that last several decades, Chavismo and “21st Century Socialism,” and the particularities of the manifestation of fascism in India. The essays not only delve into critique and analysis of contradictions in the world today, but also investigate questions about the basis for a materialist ethics, the politics of liberation, and the essential qualities of a vanguard party in current times. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/foreign-languages-press/support

We have seen how D.T. Suzuki's take on zen was a very modern thing, tailor made in Illinois as a bourgeois ideology. This time, under the guidance of Ajith's dialectical materialist critique of Brahmanism, we take up the Bhagavad Gītā (India, post 5th c. BCE), especially its modern bourgeois idealist interpretations as represented by Tilak's Gītā Rahasya, a foundational text for India's comprador Brahman classes and their English masters. We notice here the emphasis on karma yoga, the spiritual practice of carrying out one's varṇa dharma or caste destiny, within an absolute monist worldview of advaita, non-dualism. Is this “class rule as spiritual practice”—relatively obscure in the premodern Japanese Buddhist tradition but so beloved of the Anglo-American bourgeoisie for similar reasons to their enthusiastic embrace of the Gītā—the secret ingredient in D.T. Suzuki's zen? And what happens when we read the Gītā from the dialectical materialist perspective which accords so much better with South Asian thought?Critiquing Brahmanism https://foreignlanguages.press/new-roads/critiquing-brahmanism-k-murali-ajith/K. The recent big announcement in Tamil cinema is the collaboration of director Nelson (Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, yet to release Beast with Vijay) with Rajinikanth. Since the time Rajinikanth collaborated twice with Pa. Ranjith and once with Karthik Subbaraj, there have always been calls for the biggest stars - meaning male actors who guarantee huge weekend openings at box office - to work with young, promising filmmakers making a different kind of cinema, themselves a coterie that came into being around 2008 in Tamil cinema. The list of filmmakers has only grown since then and it's been a great decade. From calls for Kamal Haasan at his height of stardom and experimentation to work with some of them to Rajini working with them and Vijay collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Ajith with H. Vinoth (and we've had more than a decade of Dhanush-Vetrimaaran), fans believe this is a treat. Currently we have upcoming films like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram with Kamal Haasan, Vijay's Beast with Nelson, Vetrimaaran's Vaadivaasal with Suriya and Pa Ranjith's film with Vikram to name a few. At The Other Banana, we wondered how healthy these pairings are for Tamil cinema? An industry notorious for the way it manages production and budgets, do the numbers make sense and does the quality suffer? What is the equation between the star actor and the filmmaker? What do they get out of each other and are they satisfied? Who are the biggest stars today, who were the stars we thought could take Tamil cinema to great heights in 2005 and where are they today? What do distributors feel about this subject? Do the filmmakers matter to them the way they do for fans? To talk about all these things and more, reporter and journalist Subha Rao joined us. Subha has covered Tamil cinema for close to twenty years now and she has been at the forefront from the days of Rajini-Kamal to today's Ajith-Vijay. Young kids might find it hard to believe but there was a time when Ajith used to give interviews and Subha has interviewed him among others like Vikram et al. We've linked to some of her recent and past works before. She comes armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience and stories from distributors and filmmakers and what they think about this topic. Listen on. Participants: Aditya Subha Anantha Ashoka Edited by Ashoka Show Notes: Subha's Ajith interviews from back in the day here and here.
