Leo: Bloody Sweet, the third installment of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, stars Tamil superstar Vijay -: the titular star Leo. The film revolves around Parthiban, a simplistic cafe owner in Kashmir who has dedicated his life to rescuing injured animals. As the film progresses, the mild-mannered protagonist becomes inexplicably caught between the crosshairs of a murderous drug cartel, who claims that he was once a part of their gang. The fast paced masala thriller has introduced a whole new section of movie-goers to the Tamil film industry.

It stars Vijay in the titular role, alongside Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Trisha, Madonna Sebastian, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Priya Anand, and Mathew Thomas. It is the third installment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, following the events of Kaithi (2019) and Vikram (2022) and is inspired by A History of Violence (2005), an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name.[1] The film was officially announced in January 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 67, as it is Vijay's 67th film as a lead actor, and the title of the film was announced a few days later. Principal photography commenced the same month in Chennai along with a sporadic schedule in Kashmir, which was again followed by another schedule held at the former location, and wrapped by mid-July. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography handled by Manoj Paramahamsa and editing by Philomin Raj. Leo was released worldwide on 19 October 2023 in standard and IMAX formats to mixed reviews from the critics but positive reviews from audience

Directed by Thea Sharrock, Wicked Little Letters is a retelling of a true story about the lives of two neighbors who must join forces to solve a mystery. Trevor: The Musical set for Disney+ releaseAn off-broadway production titled, Trevor: The Musical, focuses on 13-year-old Trevor as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The musical is based on the Academy-Award-winning film, Trevor, which inspired The Trevor Project the world's largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBTQ youth. The series is expected to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on June 24.Mohanlal and Shaji Kailas to team up for a new filmMalayalam film star Mohanlal is set to reunite with director Shaji Kailas for a new film titled Alone. The pair will reunite after 13 years with production already underway based on a script by Rajesh Jayaraman. Mohanlal is also set to release his highly anticipated directorial debut in Barroz: The Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure, in which he also plays the lead.Disney announces She-Hulk release dateThe upcoming Disney+ original Marvel series, She-Hulk, is set for an August release this year. The series follows the story of Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner/The Hulk's cousin, who receives the Hulk's powers. The series also stars Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth, reprising their roles as the Hulk and Abomination respectively. Vikram's trailer outWith only a few weeks left for the release of the highly anticipated Tamil movie, Vikram, the film's new trailer has fuelled the excitement among fans. Touted to be a high-octane action-thriller, the movie features Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil in pivotal roles. Actor Suriya will be seen in a cameo appearance in the film helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Meanwhile, the movie has landed in controversy for the lyrics of the song Pathala Pathala. As per a complaint, some of the lines from the song, penned and sung by Haasan, allegedly mock the central government. The film is set to hit the big screens on June 3.New releases of the weekAfter its blockbuster theatrical run, SS Rajamouli's RRR is set to release on OTT. The film starring Ram Charan, Jr NTR, and Alia Bhatt, will be available for streaming on Netflix and Zee5 from May 20. Acharya, the first on-screen collaboration of the father-son duo Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan, will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on the same day. Directed by Koratala Siva, the Telugu film also features Pooja Hegde.This Friday will also witness the clash of two Hindi films in theatres —Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, the standalone sequel to the superhit 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Kangana Ranaut's Dhaakad. Kartik Aaryan, Tabu, and Kiara Advani essay the lead roles in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which is directed by  Anees Bazmee. Dhaakad is helmed by Razneesh Ghai and will see Ranaut playing a spy agent. Season 2 of the hit Hindi web series Panchayat, will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from May 20. The film is set to hit theaters on March 25, and the OTT releases are expected to be around 75 to 90 days after the theatrical release. Veteran Hollywood actor William Hurt dead at 71Academy Award actor, William Hurt, passed away on Sunday due to natural causes. The film is expected to be a comedy satire surrounding Bachchan's character Ganga Ram Chaudhary.Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan to make his directorial debutMalayalam star Unni Mukundan, who recently celebrated 10 years in the industry is set to helm his own film. The Meppadiyan actor will commence work on the project as a director once he has fulfilled his commitments on a couple of Malayalam and Telugu films. Nirmal Sahadev, who penned Prithviraj Sukumaran's thriller Ranam is expected to work on the script. The Power of the Dog wins big at the Critics Choice Awards Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog continues to win big as it heads towards the Oscars. The film starring  Benedict Cumberbatch has won Best Picture and Best Director at the Critics Choice Awards. West Side Story star Ariana DeBose has also continued her impressive run at the awards circuit with yet another triumph after winning Best Supporting Actress at the Critic's Choice. The recent big announcement in Tamil cinema is the collaboration of director Nelson (Kolamaavu Kokila, Doctor, yet to release Beast with Vijay) with Rajinikanth. Since the time Rajinikanth collaborated twice with Pa. Ranjith and once with Karthik Subbaraj, there have always been calls for the biggest stars - meaning male actors who guarantee huge weekend openings at box office - to work with young, promising filmmakers making a different kind of cinema, themselves a coterie that came into being around 2008 in Tamil cinema. The list of filmmakers has only grown since then and it's been a great decade. From calls for Kamal Haasan at his height of stardom and experimentation to work with some of them to Rajini working with them and Vijay collaborating with Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Ajith with H. Vinoth (and we've had more than a decade of Dhanush-Vetrimaaran), fans believe this is a treat. Currently we have upcoming films like Lokesh Kanagaraj's Vikram with Kamal Haasan, Vijay's Beast with Nelson, Vetrimaaran's Vaadivaasal with Suriya and Pa Ranjith's film with Vikram to name a few. At The Other Banana, we wondered how healthy these pairings are for Tamil cinema? An industry notorious for the way it manages production and budgets, do the numbers make sense and does the quality suffer? What is the equation between the star actor and the filmmaker? What do they get out of each other and are they satisfied? Who are the biggest stars today, who were the stars we thought could take Tamil cinema to great heights in 2005 and where are they today?
