Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. Classic kitchen sink drama this week featuring a powerful performance from Albert Finney This week, Scott and Steven are joined by Anthony, the host of the Film Gold podcast Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, released in 1960, still remains one of the finest of the Angry Young Men movies that emanated from England in the late 1950s and '60s. In his first starring role, Albert Finney played a charismatic man who seems destined to follow in his parents' and grandparents' footsteps by pursuing a mundane, working-class lifestyle. Employed as a lathe operator in a Midlands factory, Finney's Arthur Seaton lives for the weekend, when he drinks and womanizes to excess. However, when he has an affair with a coworker's wife, he finds himself facing decisions he never expected to have to make. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was based on the first novel by British author Alan Sillitoe, who wrote the screenplay. He based the grim but compelling story line on his own experiences working in a factory and used the plot as a plea for the younger generation of Brits to break the bonds that restricted them to predictable and unfulfilling lives. An accomplished stage actor, Finney earned international acclaim for his powerful performance. "Don't let the bastards grind you down!" Alan Sillitoe spoke to David Freeman when his novel Birthday was published in 2001. Birthday is the sequel to Saturday Night and Sunday Morning which was published to great acclaim in 1958. So why did it take so long to write the sequel?
Aric and Marisa travel across the pond to explore the films of the United Kingdom, specifically during the '60s and with a little detour into the '90s. They look at how the perspectives of these films are shaped by the social and economical circumstances of everyday people, and how these perspectives have much to illuminate about today's prevalent issues. The six films this episode highlights are a mix of heavy hitters and tender stories of identity: SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING (1960), a Karel Reisz picture studying the attitude of a man who plays by the rules during the week, then lets loose on the weekends, VICTIM (1961), the suspenseful story of a man blackmailed by his homosexuality and his fight to be himself against the law, THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER (1962), a character study about a talented young runner who questions discipline and the authority behind it, THIS SPORTING LIFE (1963), a story of a man who wins everything except his unrequited love, THE LEATHER BOYS (1964), a film about a newlywed couple in crisis when the husband develops feelings for a member of a rival biker gang, and LIFE IS SWEET (1990), a Mike Leigh film about a working class family enduring the mundanities of life while hanging onto their personal dreams. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by AgileThought colleague and return guest, Sam Falco! Sam is an Agile Coach and Certified Scrum Professional with an extensive background leading Agile development teams. A few episodes ago they discussed Scrum and empirical process control and today they’ll be doing a deep dive on Scrum values! One of the problems many people tend to face with Scrum is that it can feel very mechanical. But luckily, there is a solution to that. There’s a statement in the Scrum Guide that the successful use of Scrum depends on people becoming more proficient in living by five values; the values that drive Scrum. These values truly put the heart in Scrum — and they’re exactly what Sam will be talking about today! Tune in to learn what these values are, why they are so critical to the success of Scrum teams, and how to apply these values. Sam also gives some examples of where he’s seen the values be really present (and, where they haven’t) in a Scrum team and the effect that it has on the organization overall. Key Takeaways The five values that put the heart in Scrum: Commitment Courage Focus Openness Respect Why these values are so critical to Scrum teams and how to apply them: You need commitment to stay on track with Scrum Openness and courage are key to having transparent and honest communication Stay focused on the work of the sprint and the goals of the Scrum team Stay focused on the sprint goal helps to eliminate distractions Don’t get distracted by side projects and focus on the main task at hand (Sam recommends using personal Kanban boards) Respect all members of the Scrum team to be capable, independent people Show respect by showing where you have dependencies with the Scrum team Show respect by not expecting everyone to know what you know With openness and courage: share the whys, share the issues you ran into, how you overcame them, and where you need to escalate them How to strengthen these values in your Scrum team: See where they’re present and figure out where they can be strengthened Bring it up in a retrospective and have some deeper conversations about it Mentioned in this Episode: Sam Falco (LinkedIn) The Scrum Guide Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 23: “Scrum and Empirical Process Control with Sam Falco” Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 21: “Why Are Games Important to Agile? Simon Heffer continues his highly-authored and passionate exploration of British cinema by viewing five New Wave or so-called "Kitchen Sink" films of the late 1950s and 1960s. Having explored the stereotyping of working class characters in his previous series of Essays on British film, Simon Heffer turns his gaze upon the films written and directed by a new generation of grammar school-educated young men, whose gritty depiction of the lives of ordinary working men and women was to shock and delight the cinema-going public in the 1960s.3.The Loneliness of the Long Distance RunnerSimon Heffer examines a second Alan Sillitoe novel, this time turned into a cinematic masterpiece by Tony Richardson: the story of Colin Smith, a boy whose chance to escape borstal and, possibly, to improve his life chances, depends on his talent as a cross-country runner. He has swapped Sillitoe's 1950s Nottingham setting for London in 2012 just after the Olympics. Mark talks to Williams, director Marcus Romer and the star of the new production, Elliot Barnes-Worrell, about re-imagining the story for a contemporary audience - and the art of running on stage. Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the writer Alan Sillitoe. 50 years ago his debut novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning captured the truth and brutality of post war working class life. It was a world he knew intimately - he grew up in the tight, terraced streets of Nottingham and, from a very young age, harboured an ambition to escape. As a child, he read voraciously and knew he wanted to explore the world. During the war he was a navigator in Malaya but, when he returned to Britain, he was shocked to be told he had contracted tuberculosis. As he convalesced in hospital he started writing and, once he had been discharged, his disability pension gave him the security to sustain him while he pursued his career. When Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was published, critics said his was a more authentic voice than D H Lawrence's. But the extraordinary reviews made scant impact on Alan Sillitoe - he says he had developed a healthy scorn for the opinions of critics - but he remains grateful, he says, to the book that brought him security and which has allowed him the freedom to write throughout his life.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Le Ca Ira by Edith Piaf Book: The Air Publication 1234 (RAF Manual) Luxury: A communications receiver (receiving only).

But the extraordinary reviews made scant impact on Alan Sillitoe - he says he had developed a healthy scorn for the opinions of critics - but he remains grateful, he says, to the book that brought him security and which has allowed him the freedom to write throughout his life.
