294: Starting from Scratch: What it Takes to Build a Successful Nonprofit (Courtney Johnson)SUMMARYThis episode is brought to you by our friends at Armstrong McGuire & Associates. Check them out for your next career opportunity OR for help finding an interim executive or your next leader. What does it really take to build a nonprofit from scratch, especially when you're balancing limited resources, overwhelming demands, and the challenge of staying resilient as a leader? In episode 294 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, Courtney Johnson shares the inspiring story of founding Culinary Care, a nonprofit dedicated to providing meals for cancer patients and their families. What began as a personal response to the challenges her own family faced during her father's cancer treatment has evolved into a mission to make nourishment a fundamental part of cancer care. Courtney discusses the importance of relationship-building, persistence, and staying true to your mission in the nonprofit space. She offers insights on navigating early challenges, scaling growth, and managing burnout as a leader. Her experience highlights how strategic partnerships and focusing on small, sustainable steps can lead to big impact over time.ABOUT COURTNEYCourtney is the Founder of Culinary Care, which brings nourishment, care, and joy to cancer patients and their families by delivering free, restaurant-prepared meals. In 2006, while a high school junior, her father was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Told he would have five months to five years to live, he passed away just seven months later. Amidst everything, there was always one thing that brought a sense of joy and normalcy to their lives, and that was the meals that friends and neighbors delivered each night. After graduating college in 2011, she returned home to Chicago wanting to bring meals to others fighting cancer that may not have the same community support. After searching for organizations to volunteer with, she found none; that is the void Culinary Care is working to fill. Every year, 1 in 5 cancer deaths are a direct consequence of malnutrition. In Illinois alone, that's over 6,000 individuals. With every meal, Culinary Care is helping take something off the plate for cancer patients by simply putting something on it.EPISODE TOPICS & RESOURCESReady for your next leadership opportunity? Last month, we celebrated Black History Month with three incredible leaders. In this episode of Women Who Lead, we shared ‘un cafecito' with Anita Legacy Blue, Alicia Knapp, and Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose. Listen in to be inspired by their advice for future leaders and their views on creating a legacy. Meet the Leaders Alicia Knapp - President & CEO, BHE Renewables Anita Legacy Blue - LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance 2024 President Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose - President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers The Leaders' Journeys Alicia moved up through Berkshire Hathaway by always striving to exceed expectations. She had the courage to take on challenging positions early in her career. Anita has always been a servant leader. She was offered the opportunity to work at the national level when other leaders saw her willingness to show up and be accountable. Courtney was “tapped on the shoulder” to move up into leadership roles, and initially, she said “no.” The push she received from a mentor convinced her to consider the opportunity. Understanding and Responding to Biases Anita was in the Air Force for 35 years. She understands being in a male-dominated world. She knows how to rise up, call out injustice, and bring truth to light. Courtney has learned how important consistency is. Gaining respect is not about inspiring fear in others - instead, we must consistently carry ourselves in a way that demands respect. Alicia worked with very few women on the front lines in the construction and utility businesses. She became the executive sponsor of the women's employee resource group, so she had the opportunity to encourage women to enter roles in male-dominated industries. Mentoring Others Alicia recommends leading by example. We also have to show up and put effort in when working with those we are mentoring. Courtney's responsibilities get in the way of mentoring individuals, but volunteering and acting in service are great ways to connect with mentors. Anita recommends learning to be mentored. Good mentors must be good mentees - don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Dealing with Conflict Anita suggests being empathetic and listening to others, but ultimately, we have to maintain integrity and lean into what's right. Courtney advises people to solve problems by upholding the rules that keep our organizations working. Leading assertively is easy for Alicia, while empathy does not come as naturally to her. She keeps people around her that balance her and hold her accountable. Advice for Future Leaders Courtney: Be a leader that others want to follow. Anita: Excellence in all you do, and lead by faith. Alicia: Use your strengths to uplift others. Favorite Reads and Quotes Breakthrough Success by Anita Legacy Blue, and Our Shades of Black History by Anita Legacy Blue, and her podcast. "Insurance Ins and Outs" with Natalie Mitchell and today's guest Courtney Johnson dives deep into the core principles of coverage and why it is so important. Everyone needs some type of property insurance, whether you own or rent. Insurance gets a bad reputation, but it's here to protect you! Insurance can be confusing. The core principle of insurance is to cover the losses of the few among the many to protect yourself against a potential financial loss. However, your premiums can go up due to the total party, even if you were not personally affected. An example of this could occur in a major flooding situation, where many have damages under the same plan. “Renters insurance is less per month than what I spend at Starbucks per week.” Everybody needs some kind of property insurance, whether renting or owned. In a renting situation, you as the owner are ultimately responsible for any damages. It is always on you to make sure everything is sorted out - you are running that business. Condo insurance is a special situation – you as the owner still need your own insurance, but it is more optional than when owning a single-family home. Condos have three different insurances available as well: building, unit (owner), and tenants (renting). Natalie and Courtney walk us through when each can get triggered in a condo situation. Insurance is there to protect you when you do something you should not – or when you do not do something you should. These are the things we do not think about… “it's not going to happen to me”. Insurance is moving online, and it is just going to get easier and easier for people, so there is even less of a reason for people not to have it! It is even possible to write off the cost insurance as one of your expenses against the rent that you charge. It is smart to have, and it is critical! And if property damages have not happened to you, it just has not happened to you yet. Make sure you have great insurance. — Enjoying the show? One important question I like to ask women in my coaching program is this - What would you do if you could do anything? What's the change you'd like to see in the world? The answer is always a variation of ‘I want to help people.' And whether young, old or in midlife, the universal desire to be of service is rooted in our DNA. However there is a disconnect between the desire to be of service and the courage to start. A lot of women are scared of ever taking that first step, so they end up at jobs they don't enjoy, doing things they don't want to be part of to sustain their family. All while never fulfilling that strong desire to be of service. My guest today, Courtney Johnson, was only 23 when she decided to follow her own prompting to use her life to be of service. She founded an organization called Culinary Care, providing meals to people undergoing cancer treatment, and has been at it for a decade. How did she do it? How did she take that bold step to start, build this service and scale it over the past 10 years? In this episode, Courtney shares how she birthed the idea for Culinary Cares, found people who needed help, and was able to scale and sustain her non-profit over a decade. Listen in… Show Highlights Include: How the idea for Culinary Care was birthed out of tragedy (and what you can learn from that). (4:27) How to find people in need for your service by learning the exact steps Courtney took to find hers. (10:58) Why you need to wear all the hats early on in your service business (and why it isn't sustainable in the long term) (16:37) The number one attitude you should always have as an entrepreneur.
