Founder and Publisher Daniel Power started powerHouse Books in 1995, and was joined by Craig Cohen in 1996. The early years had Power and Cohen tag-teaming on a few books at a time, raising the bar each season when, in 1998, PowerHouse Books had its first best-seller, Women Before 10 A.M. by Véronique Vial. Power and Cohen followed up on that success in 1999 with the critically acclaimed cult monographs X-Ray by François Nars and Life is Paradise by Francesco Clemente and Vincent Katz. In 2000, Cohen became a partner in the company, assuming the title of Vice President and Associate Publisher, serving as Executive Publisher between 2008 and 2019. He quickly signed up for the next company bestseller, Back in the Days by Jamel Shabazz, and in the same year, he developed a packaging deal with Capitol Records to produce the Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science. With the publishing program growing rapidly, Power and Cohen hired Sara Rosen, who served as Publicity Director from 2000 to 2009. Since then, the company has redefined the cultural landscape of the illustrated book, becoming the only U.S. independent publishing company to do so. He collaborated with photographer Larry Fink on the latter's posthumous retrospective monograph, Larry Fink: Hands On / A Passionate Life of Looking. From the late 1940s to the mid 1960s, Peru's rapid industrialization and anti-communist authoritarianism coincided with the rise of mass-produced cookbooks, the first televised cooking shows, glossy lifestyle magazines, and imported domestic appliances and foodstuffs. Amy Cox Hall's The Taste of Nostalgia (U Texas Press, 2025) uses taste as a thematic and analytic thread to examine the ways that women, race, and the kitchen were foundational to Peruvian longings for modernity, both during the Cold War and today. Drawing on interviews, personal stories, media images, and archival and ethnographic research, Cox Hall considers how elite, European-descended women and the urban home were central to Peru's modernizing project and finds that all women who labored within the deeply racialized and gendered world of food helped set the stage for a Peruvian food nationalism that is now global in the twenty-first century. Cox Hall skillfully connects how the sometimes-unsavory tastes of the past are served again in today's profitable and pervasive gastronostalgia that helps sell Peru and its cuisine both at home and abroad. Dr. Amy Cox Hall is Associate Dean of the Bard Prison Initiative at Bard College, and a writer and cultural anthropologist who specializes in Peru and the U.S. with research focused on science, race, photography, national heritage, and most recently, food. Why listen to Alexandra Pringle? Because Richard Charkin told me that she's the best editor in the English speaking world, that's why.   Alexandra was editor-in-chief at Bloomsbury Publishing for more than two decades. She was recently appointed Executive Publisher.    She began her publishing career at the British magazine Art Monthly before joining the women's publisher Virago in 1978. She became Editorial Director in 1984, and moved to Hamish Hamilton in 1991 to undertake the same role. Through much of the 1990s she was a literary agent for, among others, Amanda Foreman, Geoff Dyer, Maggie O'Farrell and Ali Smith. She joined Bloomsbury in 1999 as head of the adult publishing division where her authors included Margaret Atwood, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sheila Hancock, Anne Michaels, Ann Patchett, George Saunders and Richard Ford. Among other things we talk about editing's "what if" conversations, about houseboats, socialism, building confidence, Harry Potter, tempering criticism, teasing, instinct, luck, and yes, arm-hair.     Note to Listener: My apologies. The Zoom connection was poor on this one. But what Alexandra has to say is delightful and informative, so I hope you'll agree with me that it's worth putting up with. I plan to interview her again. In person. With a good microphone. On her houseboat.

It is easier now than ever before to get a book published but there is still a lot of misconceptions and bad information out there about what you'll need to do and what others will help you with in order to have a successful book.   To ensure our listeners get only the best information we've invited Matt Holt, Editor-in-Chief of Matt Holt Books (a BenBella Books Imprint) to join us. Matt was previously Senior Vice President and Executive Publisher at John Wiley & Sons, where he oversaw a team of 85 staff. Over his 27-year career, he's acquired over 1,000 titles and published 10,000 titles! We start with the questions you need to answer before you even set pen to paper. Matt believes you need to know the goal of the book, why you are writing it, and what publishing model will best suits your business. Having had literally thousands of proposals cross his desk Matt is able to know within 30 minutes if he wants to explore a proposal further. Matt shares what he is looking for in a proposal and even the methods he uses to look into a potential author beyond the pages turned into him. Last, we discuss the tension that often exists between author and publisher. The author is making a long-term multi-year connection while the publisher will need to move onto the next project before long. Matt explains what both sides can do to provide the transparency that will be needed for everyone to achieve their goals. If you want to ensure your proposal doesn't get discarded into the “pass” pile you'll want to listen to this episode. Three Key Takeaways: · You can get a book done quickly and cheaply, or you can get it done right. · Thought Leaders who are also practitioners often have an advantage in promoting their books as they already are in direct contact with their audience. · A book is a mass-market tool, you'll need methods of taking your content to scale if you want to fully capitalize on your book launch.
