Flung is the moniker of Seattle-raised and Oakland-based multi-instrumentalist Kashika Kollaikal. Her 2024 album, 'All Heartbeat,' is the result of listening deeply to her surroundings, tuning into what she calls the “hum of the world.”Kollaikal joins KEXP’s Isabel Khalili to talk about her approach to the record and how she finds inspiration in her physical environment. They also discuss the field recordings that made it onto the record, the making of her own music box, and how her mother's harmonium became the central hum of the record.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Each Sunday, TED shares an episode of another podcast we think you'll love, handpicked for you… by us. Today we're sharing an episode of Far Flung. "I thought I'd come to paradise,” said Jane Ball Groom upon arriving in Soul City, North Carolina. It wasn't amenities or location that made Soul City paradise, but the promise of what it could be: a city built by Black people, for Black people. Our guests take us back to 1969 when the city was founded and built from (below) the ground up — and while the city itself was short-lived, we'll see how the seeds it sowed laid roots for spaces that celebrate and center Black culture today. For photos from the episode and more on the history of Soul City, head to the Souvenir Book of Soul City in the North Carolina digital collections.Special thanks to Shirlette Ammons who we could not do this story without, and our guests Charmaine McKissick-Melton, Jane Ball-Groom, Lianndra Davis, Lou Myers, Tobias Rose, and Derrick Beasley. Extra special thank you to Alan Thompson, who recorded the saxophone music you heard in this episode from Parish Street on Durham's Black Wall Street. Hosted on Acast. Have you ever looked up and noticed a pair of worn-out running shoes, with laces tied together, an hanging on the telephone wire or the power line above? Have you ever wondered why they're there? When it comes to answering that question there doesn't appear to be a consensus. In Isaiah, the prophet tells us to "Lift your eyes to the heavens." And he reminds us that "the earth will wear out like a garment." When it comes to the pairs of shabby sneakers and flung footwear here's a way that they can serve as a handy reminder.
Femme theory, bisexual butches, racy footnotes – the brand-new edited collection Queering Desire has it all. The brilliant editors, Róisín Ryan-Flood and Amy Tooth Murphy, join me for a chat about what the book means to them and how challenging and rewarding interdisciplinary research on lesbians and sapphics can be. They dive into the multi-faceted contributions and how they matter to queer culture today and also generously share their personal experience in collecting the many gems that make up Queering Desire. Which challenges and benefits of working across disciplines do they mention? Can you think of others? Another important thread is queerness across different generations. How do you experience queer kinship across generations? What do you think the term ‘queer lineage' might mean? What might femme theory be? Please look up the term and see what you find. It's been an eventful week... David Mooney is joined by City fan Chris Higginbottom and, from Sporting News, Dom Farrell to try and sort out everything that's happened in the aftermath of the 2-2 draw with Arsenal and the 2-1 win over Watford. Dan Burke runs through everything that's been said from both camps after the Arsenal match, while we take a look at the 'dark arts', following the tetchy end to the match. Then there's Rodri's injury - did we get any clues how that issue can be covered over the last two fixtures? The Athletic's data maestro, Duncan Alexander, speaks to the show about the ridiculous record that Erling Haaland has since he arrived at City, while we also hear from Pod on the Tyne panelist and Athletic journalist Chris Waugh about Newcastle's start to the new season. ========== To get more podcasts or to listen without the ads, join our Patreon. Our Mid-West Correspondent Cathy O'Halloran reports.
We're meeting Tal Bassali in this episode, a passionate, ambitious individual whose vision was to create something “so beautiful that it united people together but enabled them to remain individuals.” Enter the Zehud school, a Jewish online school teaching Hebrew and Judaic Studies to Jewish children. Living in Venice, Tal quickly realized that the type of Jewish education she wanted for her children wasn't available locally. In creating what she needed for her children, she's enabled hundreds of other Jewish children in far flung communities to join her community and receive a powerful, joyous Jewish education wherever they are in the world. In addition to education, Tal and I discuss the weight of our collective European memory, being a reluctant public speaker, and how to grow into your role - all in this episode of Women's Gallery. Mild parental advisory warning: The b-word is used once or twice. On this episode, the recent launch of the series “Ripley” on Netflix gives us a reason to discuss Flung Out of Space: Inspired by the Indecent Adventures of Patricia Highsmith, by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer, published by Surely/Abrams ComicArts! While freelancing for a pre-Marvel Comics Stan Lee to pay for a psychiatrist to “cure” her, she falls for Virginia, a member of her therapy group who helps inspire her to write “The Price of Salt,” which would become a landmark of queer literature. This podcast offers a reflection on the temptations that Jesus encountered in the wilderness (as recorded in the Gospel of Mark, chapter one). Instead of considering "Who we are?" a better question might be, "Who do we want to become?" “The men and women who are truly filled with light are those who have gazed deeply into the darkness of their own imperfect existence.” – Brennan Manning

In Episode 138, Gen and Jette discuss the graphic novel Flung Out of Space by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer. It reimagines the life of author Patricia Highsmith and the inspiration for her classic lesbian novel The Price of Salt. Show NotesWe've begun a bit of a tradition of reading a graphic novel as our second episode of the year, and we're loving it. It's especially fun to talk about the illustrations alongside the writing. It was fascinating to learn more about Patricia Highsmith—both the good and the bad—and we'd love to learn more.Did you catch the Paper Houses references? We're going to have many more coming when we read the follow up book, Pale Shadows, in early February. Our next episode we'll be talking about The Twist of a Knife by Anthony Horowitz.Don't forget to read along with our current book club pick, Her Majesty's Royal Coven by Juno Dawson. The Great American Beer Festival is right around the corner, and since we're attending again this year, we're providing an audio guide to what to drink at the fest while also sipping on some previous medal winners. These aren't just any Illinois medal winners; our four choices here are a good drive from Chicago while also representing more traditional styles. For the GABF preview, we cover what Illinois breweries are pouring, which “new-to-us” breweries have us the most excited; whose familiar faces we can't wait to see; and which “steady hand” brewers can't be missed. Also, Ryan's sharing an irrational fear, we develop an open floor taproom concept to maximize turnover, and we both agree the judges are pretty good at what they do. Eric, Wendy, and Shinjini discuss some excellent questions at length. If you want to pick and choose questions and answers to listen to, consult the timestamps below. Question Timestamps: Jonathan: What's so great specifically about the Gabler edition? (16:01-41:42) Terry: Can you sympathize with Stephen if you don't know A Portrait? (41:42-59:57) Terry: Tell me, why do I enjoy hearing you talk about the book more than reading it? It stymies me! I would love to hear you all talk about how the novice reader can best reap the benefits of this almost-impossible book. (59:57-1:18:56) Jonathan: If you could go back and tell yourself one thing prior to first reading Ulysses to help you navigate the text, what would it be? (1:18:56-1:28:05) Terry: Why is "Oxen" like that? I loved what Wendy said about it being like the gestation. More on that? (1:28:05-1:35:17) Rick: Lacking a specific love/hate/don't-get passage, I'll share what I may like most about the episode: that it brings all of Bloom's characteristics to their utmost. Here, he is most defensive of perceived quirks and faults; most expansive of his proposals to improve society; and, of course, most immersed in his sexual and other idiosyncrasies. (1:35:17-1:42:09) Mentions: Michael Groden, “Perplex in the Pen-and in the Pixels: Reflections on ‘The James Joyce Archive,' Hans Walter Gabler's ‘Ulysses,' and ‘James Joyce's ‘Ulysses' in Hypermedia.' Today, an episode of Far Flung with Saleem Reshamwala, another podcast from the TED Audio Collective. Icelandic is an ancient and iconic language that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien when he wrote "The Lord of the Rings." But with the digital age, and the strict rules surrounding its grammar, Icelandic is losing ground all over the country -- specifically to English. Now Icelanders are split, using English for social and online interactions and Icelandic for more formal conversations. Listen to why some Icelanders are concerned about this linguistic tug-of-war and why others are celebrating this new, multi-language way of communicating. Saleem also sits down with Elise to give us a book recommendation that dives deeper into these ideas: "Gold Diggers" by Sanjena Sathian. This episode is part of the TED Talks Daily summer book club, a series featuring talks and interviews to inspire your next great read.

But before that, something different. We're sharing an episode of another podcast Saleem hosts called More Than A Feeling. Most of us have gotten at least a little emotional at some point recently. It's natural. But why do we have emotions and how much should we pay attention to them on any given day? Can we learn to skillfully choose which emotions to listen to and which ones to just let move on by? On this podcast from Ten Percent Happier, Saleem will experiment with neuroscientists, dive into stories with historians and philosophers, and document how musicians, therapists, hairdressers and airplane pilots work with emotions. In the first episode, they get philosophical and ask: what are emotions anyway? Saleem was always trying to figure this question out when he was growing up as a mashup kid: bouncing back and forth with his family between India, Japan and North Carolina. It turns out there are some hidden clues to be found in how we try to translate words for emotions from one language to another. And this opens up a new universe of possibilities for how we describe and relate to our feelings. If you like the show, you can hear more by following More Than A Feeling wherever you're listening to this.
