Boss Barista
A Matter of Trust with Brian Gaffney [146]

Boss Barista

I first met Brian Gaffney while working at an unobtrusive coffee shop in Brooklyn called Daily Press. This wasn’t the kind of place you’d go out of your way to visit—it was located right on a busy street in the southeast corner of Bed-Stuy—and mostly, it attracted folks who lived locally. Instead, the fact that it was a neighborhood spot made Daily Press what it was. Almost every customer was a regular, someone who at least one of the baristas had built a relationship with. I remember Brian distinctly—he was friendly with everyone. He worked out of the shop pretty often, and was always curious about the types of coffee we were pouring. Although Brian doesn’t work in the coffee industry as we traditionally think of it—he even describes his relationship to the industry as being “coffee-adjacent”—he’s continued to pursue his interest, writing about coffee for publications like Standart and serving on the board of the Coffee Coalition for Racial Equity (CCRE). In this conversation, we revisit our nine-year-long friendship and discuss how to find ways to connect with customers. I continue to come back to this phrase that I think James Hoffmann, owner of Square Mile Coffee and former podcast guest, said once—one you’ll hear in this episode—that coffee is bad at telling its own story. Brian’s background is in marketing and brand strategy, so we talk about what it means for coffee people to take ownership of their own narratives. But we’re not just talking about coffee shop owners when we say “coffee people.” When it comes to coffee’s narratives, Black and Brown people are all too often left out of the equation, even though their labor, both historically and today, continues to be the backbone of our entire industry—and yet the stories and ways we talk about coffee center affluent, white consumers. Brian and I discuss what a coffee industry led by Black and Brown people could look like, and how centering the perspective of the laborers in coffee has the potential to completely rewrite the industry’s future—and reverse the descent into sameness we seem to be experiencing now. Here’s Brian.

In this episode, I take an in-depth look at the benefits of heat and light therapy with the founder of SaunaSpace, Brian Richards, who describes how he was inspired to create his own near-infrared sauna when he was looking for a natural and drug-free way to cure his acne, insomnia, and adrenal fatigue. Although Brian’s first sauna was cobbled together from scavenged parts and chicken wire, he was so impressed by the transformative effect it had on his health that he spent the next few years refining his design. Today, his company produces unique and beautiful portable saunas made from high-quality materials that enable you to create a designated healing space in your own home.Brian sets out the many benefits of sauna therapy, from detoxification and cellular rejuvenation to increased energy, better sleep, and clearer skin. He explains how near-infrared light promotes cellular healing and describes the joyful and rejuvenating experience of spending time in a specifically designed ritual healing space, free from modern technology and set apart from the stresses and demands of our everyday lives. Video version https://vimeo.com/492486581 About the Podcast Today I invite Brian Strobel, VP of Corporate Quality at Sierra Nevada Corporation (the aerospace company, not the beer guys) and author of the upcoming book, “Pursuing Excellence: A Values-Based, Systems Approach to Help Companies Become More Resilient” (2021), in addition to his previous book, “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (2015). We start off the conversation with the notion of “truth”, what is it and who holds it.  In this regard, Brian and I agree that neither he or I are the holders of the truth when it comes to people, leadership, and followership – and that we both are skeptical of people who claim to be the holders of the truth when it comes to topics which are nuanced and contextual. After obtaining an AAS in Metrology and then a BA in Physics, and having considered signing up for the nuclear Navy, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for fifteen years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft.  Highlights of his career include three carrier deployments, a two-year exchange tour with the Royal Australian Air Force, Quality Assurance Officer for the US Atlantic Fleet, and Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the largest squadron in the Marine Corps. The conversation continues to his transition out of the Marine Corps, to civilian life and the various companies he worked at the roles he held; and with each incarnation having increased responsibility and authority and his leadership skills matured and where honed.  The experiences, stories, and insights gained that Brian shares through his civilian career hold a lot of wisdom and is a particularly good listen. And he shares details of his books; why he wrote them, who he wrote them for, what he hopes people gain from their reading them, and experiences of the writing process itself.  So if anyone is thinking about becoming an author, there is some good guidance here. About Brian Strobel Brian has been leading people in operational environments for nearly thirty years.  His initial academic pursuits trained him to be a physicist, but life had other plans.  He’s served in roles from leading large-scale military operations to leading change across large companies and is certified as a trainer for Situational Leadership, a Professional Coach, a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and a Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence. Brian’s professional career started as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for 15 years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft.  Following the Marines, he worked at various companies serving the Department of Defense including; Harris Corporation, Northrup Grumman, and L3 Technologies before landing his current role at Sierra Nevada Corporation.  Within each company, and in changing companies, the roles Brian held increasingly had more responsibility. He is the author of “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (available on Amazon) published in 2015.  And his latest book is “Pursuing Excellence: A Values-Based, Systems Approach to Help Companies Become More Resilient” whose website is here and is due to be released in February of 2021 and available on Amazon. Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Physics from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, his Master of Arts (MA) degree in Management from Webster University, and his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Executive Leadership at the University of San Diego School of Business where he studied under Ken Blanchard. Although Brian’s path has been different than most, he has always focused on pursuing excellence.  This path ultimately revealed how his life’s plan was coming together where he is now fully dedicated to its pursuit, living in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada with his wife and his new dog.  When not serving as the Vice President of Quality helping a special company pursue excellence, you can probably find him with his wife and that dog enjoying the mountains. Company; Sierra Nevada Corporation Website; https://www.sncorp.com/ Headquarters;  Sparks, Nevada Year Founded; 1963 Company Type; Privately held Company Size;  4,000+ Employees in over 40 locations Specialties;  Sierra Nevada Corporation provides electronic aerospace and defense system The Company offers communication, navigation, and air traffic management systems, as well as provides intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, command, and control products.

This episode is the second of what will be an ongoing series on Steady State Economics. In my mind, this approach to the economy provides the best option moving forward in light of the environmental crises developing due to approaches to the economy focused upon economic growth. One of the things that appeals to me about this approach is that it is compatible with both capitalism and socialism, so that it is adaptable and adoptable to most of the worlds existing economies. A country does not have to switch to capitalism or socialism or deal with the struggle that would be the result of debating and seeking such a switch. My guest for this episode is Dr. Brian Czech. Brian is the founder and present Executive Director of Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE). Brian’s books are listed below, but the one this interview is based upon is his Supply Shock: Economic Growth at the Crossroads and the Steady State Solution. Although Brian does not get beyond the understanding of those of us who are not economists, he provides us with a thorough and excellent understanding of the development of growth economies and why those approaches to the economy not only are not sustainable, but are the cause of the crises we are beginning to experience. Such an understanding is necessary to recognize why a Steady State Economy is an essential solution for our future. In addition to Supply Shock, Brian’s other works include: The Endangered Species Act: History, Conservation, Biology, and Public Policy Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train: Errant Economists, Shameful Spenders, and a Plan to Stop Them All Best of the Daly News: Selected Essays from the Leading Blog in Steady State Economics, 2010-2018 The music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project. The Portland Trail Blazers look to finish strong, but has the NBA rigged the process? We're not saying yes, but there aren't a whole lot of no's out there either. How is it looking for baseball's chances in 2020? Although Brian does not cry, he is sad. Tim tries to find the silver lining in all of it as always.

"That's how [Game Changers] made a whole film, they cherry-picked their data...I'd love to make a film that couldn't be debunked. That's my whole goal." Nutrient density, millions of years of human evolution, and modern nutrition science is the framework for the "Sapien Diet". Not to be mistaken as a trendy "one size fits all" diet, but a set of guidelines and principles Brian Sanders believes how the modern human should eat. Brian Sanders, who is the host of the Peak Human Podcast & filmmaker behind the upcoming Food Lies Film, has collated a variety of perspectives on optimal nutrition and performance throughout his health journey and research. Although Brian is of the mind that nutrition lies on a spectrum and should be personalized for an individual, his Sapien Diet framework largely revolves around eating a single constant: Animal-based foods, while avoiding the obvious: Highly-processed and refined foods. The recent demonization of meat is somewhat of an oddity, given that it has historically been directly tied to the advance of human evolution. With plant-based diets on the rise, the opposite camp of the "diet wars" (carnivores) have been resistant to the mainstream popularization of plant-based nutrition. Who is right? Who is wrong? Geoffrey Woo & Brian Sanders have an informative discussion on the spectrum of nutrition, the dangers of falling too deep into microscopic research, and why the current science & historical nature of animal-based nutrition trumps a plant-based diet.   Where to find Brian

On today's episode Seth speaks to Brian D. Ridgway , "The Spellbreaker" and Founder at Level 5 Transformational Mentoring , about Self-improvement being a booby-trapped and what if there is actually a way to change your life - in all areas, all at once - by finding and shifting the ONE hidden issue creating all of the stuckness? Coming from an abusive childhood and then living with the outcomes of that on-going pain, the author invested $300,000+, 30+ years and tens of thousands of hours on self-help, personal development and business/money/success courses - as his life grew steadily worse. Finding himself, homeless, desperate, suicidal and stuck, he experienced an awakening that took him from homeless to living the dream in Hawaii in less than 90 days. Since that “miracle moment”, he has been able to help thousands around the world to take their first steps into true freedom. As program after program failed to deliver the promised “full package” of transformation, Brian became as a self-proclaimed Self-Help Junkie - eventually investing over $300,000 and tens of thousands of hours into his desperate quest for a life that “worked”. After nearly 30 years of intense research into religious, spiritual, self-help and personal development approaches failed to solve his core issues, he abandoned his skepticism and dove into more “alternative” approaches: energy work, Law of Attraction study and experimentation, belief-elimination, binaural brain-wave entrainment, meditation and “higher” spiritual approaches. His inability to find the transformation he was seeking, and the conflicting information in the self-help work led him to deeper and deeper desperation and depression. At the end of his rope, homeless and suicidal, in early 2011, he experienced his “Miracle Moment”, and went from the idea of Infinite Possibilities to the experience of Infinite Possibilities. In that awakening moment, he was given the teaching that he calls, “The Level 5 Paradigm”. Brian teaches the Level 5 Paradigm, taking people directly into the experience of Awakening and Liberation. His process includes what he calls “Spellbreaks”; through which he helps people release any undesired experiences - in any areas of life. Literal miracles and spontaneous healings are regular occurrences when Brian speaks or works with people - in his programs, workshops and live events with private clients and with his audiences, online and off. His ability to help people experience instant, deep and lasting breakthroughs is bringing him a rapidly expanding global following. Brian D. Ridgway is known to his clients as “The Spellbreaker”. Although Brian doesn’t refer to himself in these terms, people who have experienced Brian’s work have referred to him as a Spiritual Teacher and Healer. A Shaman, Speaker and #1 International Best-Selling Author, Brian helps people, mostly entrepreneurs and change-makers to step out of “the illusion of problems” and into the Conscious Creation of the body, health, business, wealth, relationships, life and world of their dreams. We’re back! As we begin the new year, we’re also starting a new season of Systematically, and we’re glad you’re with us. Although Brian and Robyn are absent (due to Christmastime traveling and sickness, respectively), Ryan and Jon ring in 2019 by discussing their children’s uncanny ability to both catch and spread seasonal illnesses, inhibiting dissertation progress along the way. This segues into a spirited conversation about Lonergan’s 1974 essay, “The Dialectic of Authority,” which appears in Volume 16 of The Collected Works of Bernard Lonergan. That essay focuses on the complex tension between power and the exercise of legitimate power (i.e., authority), especially as this tension impacts a community’s development of shared meanings and values. This tension’s historical unfolding manifests itself in widespread progress or decline. If contemporary headlines are any indication, Lonergan’s thoughts on the topic are still quite timely in 2019. DESCRIPTION   Today we are going through all the essential stages of creating a successful brand in a really interesting discussion with Kiri Masters and Brian Smith, the founder of UGG. Although Brian sold UGG a little while ago, he has some really amazing stories to share about growing the company into an internationally recognized brand, what he went through along the way and how he dealt with retailers or copycats. Brian is also the author of the book “The Birth of a Brand” and he was kind enough to share with us several insights that he included in his book. Tune in and learn more about Brian’s experience with growing UGG.   Though Brian spent several years studying accounting, he wasn’t very passionate about this field and decided to explore his entrepreneurial side by going to California to find something innovative and bring it back to Australia. After following his dream of surfing in Malibu for a couple of months, one day, while sitting on the beach, Brian realized that the water started getting cold and chilly winds began to blow. Pulling on the sheepskin boots he'd brought with him from Australia, Brian had a breakthrough. He realized there were no UGG boots in America! Though everyone knows the popular UGG brand now, it took quite a long time for Brian to tap into the consumer mind and understand how to sell the products he produced. In this interview Brian explains what he did to grow his company into the iconic brand that it has become today. We hope you enjoy his insightful journey.       KEY TAKEAWAYS Brain tells the story of how his brand was born. The first year's sales were only twenty-eight pairs of boots. How he managed to break into the consciousness of the public. Brian noticed a theme years later while writing a book when the brand had grown into the millions. The theme of Brian's book was that you can't give birth to adults. Brian explains his analogy of giving birth to adults. The stage where most entrepreneurs give up. Every business goes through a stage of infancy before the orders start coming in. If you start out with a really unique product or service, the business is bound to pass through the infancy stage and move into the teenage years. The potential danger of getting into national distribution too quickly. Brian explains the life cycle of every business. Brian's book, “The Birth of a Brand”, highlights all the stages that a business goes through. The UGG brand has gone on to gross a billion dollar per year for the last six years in a row. The different stages and turning points that Brian experienced as his brand become more and more popular. Brian broke through when he started taking pictures of pros surfing at iconic surf locations to create really powerful images for his ads. Advertising and marketing became a passion for Brian. The importance of advertising the emotional side of the benefits of your product. Brian's reaction to the copycats who started coming in. When Brian sold the company it wasn't about the product, it was all about the brand. Brian taught his staff not to obsess about their competitors, but rather to "get out first and run faster". The strategy of going for the lowest price is not always the best way to go. Staying ahead of the competitors. There is a value implication to being more expensive. How the UGG brand got into the back door of retail through the surf market. The methodology of marketing has really changed with the internet age, so you have to think and react much faster. A product that Brian sees as the new UGG brand is the Sash Bag. The power of utilizing an existing market to sell products. The importance of building personal connections. On the 30th of October, Brian has a big ad coming out in Ink Magazine to launch the audio version of his book. Brian's book is still as relevant as when it was first published. Go to Amazon on October the 30th and look for The Birth Of A Brand - it's a roadmap for every entrepreneur.   MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE   “The Birth of a Brand” by Brian Smith. The Sash Bag, another UGG style product. Leveraging Storytelling & User Generated Content with Lexi Cross.

Desert Island Discs: Archive 2000-2005

Brian May spent his childhood in Feltham near London and he learnt his first chords on his father's ukelele banjo. He soon progressed to the guitar, which he started learning when he was eight. He perfected his technique by buying records and copying the trickiest guitar parts. Although Brian's dream was to be a guitarist, it didn't seem like a reality so, encouraged by his parents, he went to London University's Imperial College to study physics. Whilst there he continued playing in bands with his drummer friend Roger Taylor. They were soon joined by art student Freddie Bulsara (who became Freddie Mercury) and John Deacon and formed Queen. Brian was researching infra red astronomy and part-time tutoring, but Queen soon hit the big time with their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack, a success on both sides of the Atlantic. The band recorded 20 albums over a 22 year period and had frequent hits around the world with Killer Queen, Radio Ga Ga and Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian wrote huge Queen hits such as We will Rock You, Fat Bottomed Girls and Flash. They were known for their flamboyant live shows, where Brian provided technical brilliance and extended guitar solos inspired by Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. When lead singer Freddie Mercury died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991, Brian and his fellow band members organised a huge tribute concert for AIDS research which was shown on television screens around the world. Thirty-one years after Queen began, the band is still popular: Bohemian Rhapsody was voted most popular British song in a BBC Radio 2 poll this year, 24 years after its first release. Brian has also written and toured with his own band and in June this year he kicked off the Queen's Jubilee concert with an amazing guitar solo of The National Anthem from the roof of Buckingham Palace. This month he came fifth in a poll to find the World's Greatest Guitarists.
