Women have been left on the sidelines when it comes to sport and exercise research. Research finds a measly 6% of studies in the field have exclusively focused on women. That's bad. But for menopausal women, it's worse. Of that 6%, menopausal women account for only 9% of total study participants, with only 16% of female-only studies focusing exclusively on older women. This despite the fact that 40+ women have been lining up in greater numbers in sports of all kinds. We deserve better and this week's guest, women's health and performance researcher, Kelly McNulty, PhD, has a lot to say about it. We talk about what she has learned studying menopausal women of all walks of life and how education and information can make our lives exponentially better. Kelly McNulty, PhD, is a research assistant at Northumbria University currently investigating endocrinological, lifestyle, and psychosocial determinants of brain health outcomes in female veterans. She is a graduate from Northumbria University, with both a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Sport and Exercise Science and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Strength & Conditioning. Her research interests are in the area of female physiology; the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraception, breast health, pelvic floor health, pregnancy, menopause, as applied to sport and exercise. Kelly is the founder and podcast host of 'The Period of the Period'; a digital education platform on a mission to change the narrative for women's health and performance in sport and exercise by promoting awareness, increasing evidence-based education & providing support.ResourcesExperience of the menopause transition in Irish women and how it impacts motivators, facilitators, and barriers to physical activity engagement hereInvisibility of female participants in midlife and beyond in sport and exercise science research: a call to action here“Invisible Sportswomen 2.0”—Digging Deeper Into Gender Bias in Sport and Exercise Science Research: Author Gender, Editorial Board Gender, and Research Quality hereJoin the Feisty Girona Gravel Camp: https://www.thomsonbiketours.com/trips/feisty-girona-gravel-camp/ Subscribe to the Feisty 40+ newsletter: https://feistymedia.ac-page.com/feisty-40-sign-up-page Follow Us on Instagram:Feisty Menopause: @feistymenopause Hit Play Not Pause Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/807943973376099 Support our Partners:Hettas: Use code FEISTY20 for 20% off at https://hettas.com/ Midi Health: You Deserve to Feel Great. The episode is in English – scroll down for the English description. In English: In this episode, Lubo and Dr. Maggie Liu explore the universe and discuss the role of Artificial Intelligence in the space sector. Although the human factor and manual work in astrophysics are still extremely important, the use of AI in processing and filtering millions of gigabytes of data supports most of the work of the scientists. However, it turns out that in addition to processing huge amounts of data, AI can also be useful in more humanitarian areas. For example, observing the Earth from space may reveal places where slave labor is still used. Listen to the episode for more interesting topics, such as: - The future of AI in science - Astronomer's work in 2023 - The modelling of super rare cosmic events - Machine learning and its importance in astronomy About the guest: Dr. Maggie Lieu is an accomplished astrophysicist who's is working on unravelling the mysteries of dark matter, dark energy, and the origins of our universe using galaxy groups and clusters. Using advanced statistical methods and machine learning, she extracts groundbreaking insights from complex data sets plagued by noise. Beyond research, she is an avid public engagement enthusiast and has appeared in various media outlets to discuss topics including space launches and Mars. Dr. Lieu is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders. She currently lectures and supervises students on the Machine Learning in Science MSc program at the University of Nottingham. What are the many wine flavours found in the various wine aromas wheels with descriptions such as strawberries, apple and vanilla? So, when you smell wine, the alcohol volatilises and carries these lighter-than-air aroma compounds into your nose. Each wine can contain hundreds of different aroma compounds and each compound can affect the flavour of a wine. From a chemical perspective, flavours are the manifestation of compounds that are released at different stages during the wine life cycle. When we smell these compounds, a stimulus is transmitted to our brain that compares it to a “memory” of known sensations – eventually conjuring a final impression.Being fascinated by science and empirical research, in this episode, I spoke to Sietze Wijma a MSc Sensory Science graduate and founder of the art of tasting who will walk us through some of the major flavours compounds, their names and chemistry, explaining how they come about and some of the faults in wines and what are the key compound that one should know.Specific anosmia of flavour compounds Specific anosmia (smell-blindness) is the phenomenon where a person is unable to detect a specific flavour compound, where they otherwise have an intact sense of smell. For example, 30% of the population is unable to detect rotundone (black pepper-like aroma). β-ionone (violet-like aroma) has a 50% specific anosmia rate. Isoamyl acetate (banana-like aroma) has a

This week's guest is sex educator and sex science communicator, Eva Bloom (they/she). In this conversation, Eva shares about the journey that led them to the work they do in the world now. Along the way, Eva lets us into their own personal journey. They share with us about being a queer person who didn't have conscious awareness of their queerness until after adolescence. As with others with a similar story, Eva recounts lots of  those hindsight's 20/20 examples where they could see their queerness budding and expressing itself before they were really aware it was doing so. They go on to share about the gradual evolution of queerness coming more to the forefront and about their initial queer experiences, the ongoing coming outs we do, navigating patriarchal systems, and so much more. This was such a great conversation and I feel so grateful to Eva for wanting to come on and let us all into their story. About the guest:Eva Bloom (they/she) is a non-binary, queer award-winning sexuality educator and sex science communicator. Video version https://vimeo.com/492486581 About the Podcast Today I invite Brian Strobel, VP of Corporate Quality at Sierra Nevada Corporation (the aerospace company, not the beer guys) and author of the upcoming book, “Pursuing Excellence: A Values-Based, Systems Approach to Help Companies Become More Resilient” (2021), in addition to his previous book, “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (2015). We start off the conversation with the notion of “truth”, what is it and who holds it.  In this regard, Brian and I agree that neither he or I are the holders of the truth when it comes to people, leadership, and followership – and that we both are skeptical of people who claim to be the holders of the truth when it comes to topics which are nuanced and contextual. After obtaining an AAS in Metrology and then a BA in Physics, and having considered signing up for the nuclear Navy, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for fifteen years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft.  Highlights of his career include three carrier deployments, a two-year exchange tour with the Royal Australian Air Force, Quality Assurance Officer for the US Atlantic Fleet, and Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the largest squadron in the Marine Corps. The conversation continues to his transition out of the Marine Corps, to civilian life and the various companies he worked at the roles he held; and with each incarnation having increased responsibility and authority and his leadership skills matured and where honed.  The experiences, stories, and insights gained that Brian shares through his civilian career hold a lot of wisdom and is a particularly good listen. And he shares details of his books; why he wrote them, who he wrote them for, what he hopes people gain from their reading them, and experiences of the writing process itself.  So if anyone is thinking about becoming an author, there is some good guidance here. About Brian Strobel Brian has been leading people in operational environments for nearly thirty years.  His initial academic pursuits trained him to be a physicist, but life had other plans.  He’s served in roles from leading large-scale military operations to leading change across large companies and is certified as a trainer for Situational Leadership, a Professional Coach, a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and a Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence. Brian’s professional career started as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps where he served for 15 years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, primarily with F/A-18 Aircraft.  Following the Marines, he worked at various companies serving the Department of Defense including; Harris Corporation, Northrup Grumman, and L3 Technologies before landing his current role at Sierra Nevada Corporation.  Within each company, and in changing companies, the roles Brian held increasingly had more responsibility. He is the author of “Leading Change from Within: A Road Map to Help Middle Managers Affect Lasting Change” (available on Amazon) published in 2015.  And his latest book is “Pursuing Excellence: A Values-Based, Systems Approach to Help Companies Become More Resilient” whose website is here and is due to be released in February of 2021 and available on Amazon. Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Physics from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, his Master of Arts (MA) degree in Management from Webster University, and his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Executive Leadership at the University of San Diego School of Business where he studied under Ken Blanchard. Although Brian’s path has been different than most, he has always focused on pursuing excellence.  This path ultimately revealed how his life’s plan was coming together where he is now fully dedicated to its pursuit, living in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada with his wife and his new dog.  When not serving as the Vice President of Quality helping a special company pursue excellence, you can probably find him with his wife and that dog enjoying the mountains. Carnot Capital is an investment management company, specialized in the area of energy and resource efficiency. Carnot Capital is a signatory of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and measure the impact of their investments by mapping the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Andres Gujan is the Cofounder and Portfolio Manager at Carnot Capital. Andres Gujan was an analyst for engineering, real estate and electricity companies at Valartis Bank. In this context he was responsible of the investment portfolio of Valartis Bank, has been a consultant for institutional clients and involved in the issue of derivative investment products. Prior to that, he held leading positions in financial analysis at Bank Vontobel and at Kepler Equities, where he was a responsible analyst for the first share placement of BKW FMB Energy. Andres Gujan started his career at UBS. Andres Gujan is a graduate of the University of St. Gallen (lic.rer.publ.HSG) and is a chartered financial analyst (CFA). Dominique Sekyra is the Head of Business Development at Carnot Capital. Dominique used to work for Knight Vinke (Switzerland) AG where he was responsible for Investor Relations. Prior to this, Dominique worked for the UHNWI team of Bank Vontobel AG's Private Bank. Dominique holds a Master of Science (MSc) in International Business Economics from the University of Westminster in London. Highlights: “We don’t buy sustainability reports, we buy good companies” “At the time there were a lot of sustainable funds around, but we thought that these funds were not that sustainable. Because sustainability is also a financial aspect. A lot of these funds disappeared because they were investing in business models that were not sustainable in the end. So companies that went basically bust.” Carnot capital has two well established  funds - Carnot Efficient Energy Fund and Carnot Efficient Resource Fund. They also recently launched a circular economy index together with Bank Vontobel. Investing in established companies with products and services in industrial, transport and buildings technology, rather than energy transition into renewables. They also invest in resource efficiency such as food sector for example fisheries, agriculture, clean air and clean water. “And only if you ask those specific questions, you actually drill a little bit deeper than the usual biannual analyst call which is mainly very financial heavy, and governance heavy. We are able to ask a different set of questions to competing funds and that is our edge.” There is a lag between how rating agencies analyse these companies and how we interpret these companies with dialogue and deeper research and ESG ratings. Heatmaps of aggregation of the portfolio companies and SDG impact “In our experience, it is impossible to do impact investing without being an active investor.” “I think there will be two streets, two avenues. Either you analyze everything, and you analyze it with not enough depth or granularity, or you focus like us on a specific sector or even a specific portfolio.” How partnerships with banks can scale impact investing -1) create actively managed certificates and create derivatives themed around resource funds 2) traditional managed accounts where they pick out the best qualities from niche impact investors The challenges of climate change and resource scarcity will still be around after the coronavirus crisis. Highlights: [03:24] What is sustainable and impact investing? [07:00] How the investments moved from reducing energy consumption to sustainable and impact investing [16:20] Engagement with companies to push for efficiency numbers and realising these for investors [21:00] Regulatory coming in that will impact footprint and handprint [26:24] Methodology for assessing and measuring environmental impact [31:46] Investor clients coming to Carnot Capital [34:00] Active investing vs ETFs and passive investments [36:07] Challenge of scaling funds like Carnot Capital’s [38:09] Coronavirus crisis and its impact on the market  [43:00] More about Andres and Dominique and what inspires them [47:25] Call to action Useful links: Andreas Gujan’s Linkedin (https://ch.linkedin.com/in/andres-gujan-39207015) Dominique Sekyra’s Linkedin (https://ch.linkedin.com/in/dominique-sekyra) Andreas Walther - Chief Impact Officer of Carnot Capital Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-andreas-walther-797564146/) Carnot Capital (http://carnotcapital.com/) Carnot Efficient Energy Fund (https://www.carnotcapital.com/investor/carnot-efficient-energy) Carnot Efficient Resources Fund (https://www.carnotcapital.com/investor/carnot-efficient-resources) Circular World Index (https://www.carnotcapital.com/news/180-carnot-capital-publishes-the-second-edition-of-its-impact-investing-research-paper-2-1) Carnot Capital Twitter (https://twitter.com/carnotcapital) Carnot Capital Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/company/carnotcapital/) Belimo (https://www.belimo.com/) Bertrand Piccard - Solar Impulse (https://solarimpulse.com/) Jeremy Rifkin - The New Green Deal (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-New-Deal-Jeremy-Rifkin/dp/1250253209) Connect with JP Dallmann on Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jp-dallmann/) , Twitter (https://twitter.com/JPDallmann) , or Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/inspiredbyjp/) . Jeff Tang: Demystifying “Fileless” Malware       The only difference between a hacker and a remote systems administrator is who is employing them  -- Unknown   Want to hear some numbers that might scare you? Or… they might confirm what you already know. Or… they might just be numbers.   63% of IT security professionals say the frequency of attacks has gone up over the past 12 months, according to Ponemon's 2018 State of Endpoint Security Risk report   52% of respondents say all attacks cannot be realistically stopped. Their antivirus solutions are blocking only 43% of attacks   62% of respondents said that their organizations had experienced one or more endpoint attacks that resulted in a data breach  -- 6 Ways Malware Can Bypass Endpoint Protection; Maria Korolov, contributing writer CSO   By now, everyone is familiar with the concept of file-based malware. Malware typically is delivered in the form of executable files. When it comes to “fileless” malware however, there’s a lot of confusion and misunderstanding due to the evolving nature of the term.   Fileless malware originally took shape in the form of exploit payloads that reside only in-memory and never touched disk. Later on, the endpoint security industry adopted it to encompass file formats that were not traditionally recognized as executable but instead served as a host container to run arbitrary code. As attackers have revamped their techniques, the term has gone on to include misusing built-in operating system utilities to conduct their operations.   In this episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson spent some time with Jeff Tang to find out what the hell all this means and why it matters. Think you know? Might want to tune in just to make sure   About Jeff Tang Jeff Tang(@mrjefftang) is a Senior Security Researcher at Cylance focused on operating systems and vulnerability research. InSecurity Podcast: Jeff Tang is Beggin’ You… Stop Trying to Make “Weaponized” Cyber Happen     The Missing Persons tried to tell usin the 1980s… “Media overload bombarding you with action It's getting near impossible to cause distraction Someone answer me before I pull out the plug What are words for when no one listens anymore” When it comes to cybersecurity, who is telling you the right things? And we don’t mean who is telling you the truth. We mean who is using the right words to describe the things and the actions that are affecting you and your ability to protect your data. Everywhere Jeff Tang looks, he is besieged with news stories using terms like “weapons-grade exploits” to describe the latest malware outbreak. The narrative constructed that results from this colorful language is detrimental to the progress of securing our computer networks, because it seeks to categorically apply the metaphor of military conflict to cybersecurity - and not every incident in cyber conflict qualifies as a military-style “attack.” In today’s episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson chats with Cylance Executive Mischief Consultant Jeff Tang about the value of words in cybersecurity. Jeff explains why it is mind boggling to compare the inconvenience of not being able to access your social media or online banking to a real-world kinetic attack that causes mass human causalities. Join us and understand that, while computers work in a world of binaries, that doesn’t mean our thinking about them has to be binary as well. It’s time we transition away from these military terms when discussing cybersecurity – or face the real-world consequences. The most recent data indicate that 30 per cent more Albertans took their lives in 2015 compared to 2014.   Some attribute this grim statistic to the downturn in oil prices and the economy, but what really lies behind these suicide statistics?  What are the causes of depression, and why does Alberta have such a high suicide rate?  The speakers will explore what some of the early warning signs of depression are and what preventative measures can be taken.
