The developer's application is still pending, and the council requested Bridger to hold town halls and gather input from residents before submitting new plans. The city's Historic Board of Review previously recommended denying Bridger's design. Mayor Steve Tumlin expressed the need for the project to comply with city code. Bridger, an Atlanta-based developer, does not require rezoning but needs the council's approval due to the property's location in the downtown historic district. The possibility of litigation remains, but both parties expressed a willingness to negotiate. STORY 2: Wheaton ** Christian Jamar Harris, a 32-year-old man from Acworth, Georgia,  was arrested on April 27 for possessing over 100 videos of Lewis Wheaton, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Biological Sciences and the Ward 7 city councilman in Smyrna, has resigned from his position after moving out of the area he represented. Wheaton had been in the position since 2019 and announced his resignation at the Smyrna City Council's May 1 meeting, citing "happy and unexpected life circumstances." Despite moving out of the ward, Wheaton and his family will still reside in the city. The Smyrna City Council is now working on a plan to replace Wheaton before the November election when his former seat is on the ballot.Top of Form       Story 3: Nurses   On May 10, the Cobb County School District recognized National School Nurse Day by honoring their school nurses for their essential role in promoting student health and ensuring readiness for learning. For some residents, this will mean an increase in their property taxes. Homeowners have 45 days to appeal if they believe their home has been overvalued. The growth means an increase in tax revenue for Cobb County, its cities, school districts and community improvement districts. The number of home sales in Cobb was down by 21.6% in April of this year compared to last April, according to the Georgia Multiple Listing Service. However, the April median sales price grew by 3.2% year-over-year.   Story 7: Sentenced   The Georgia state Board of Education has approved new English/language arts (ELA) standards for public schools, completing the process of abandoning Common Core. The new standards were created with input from teachers, parents, students, business leaders, and community members. The ELA standards prioritize learners and aim to give students a strong foundation for both literacy and success. The standards place a strong emphasis on fundamentals in the early grades, reflecting the importance of early literacy to all future learning. Fields led Ohio State to two College Football Playoff appearances and was a Heisman Trophy finalist. When Adam Getz first joined the military, his plan was to finish his initial enlistment as an Army musician and separate. As his roles changed within the military, Adam decided to serve for 20 years with the goal of having a second career in the private sector.  Adam earned an MBA, PMP and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certifications to prepare him for his next career in project management. When Adam left the military4/2021, he spent a year as a Senior Project Manager in pharmaceutical contract manufacturing. Today, he is a Senior Project Manager in Supply Chain Operations at Indiana University Health. Adam finished his MBA earlier in his Army career. Once he focused on becoming a project manager, he completed his PMP and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt closer to retirement. Adam used a full 24 months to prepare for his transition by attending TAP classes, leveraging LinkedIn and networking . After using The 20-Minute Networking Meeting book as a guide on how to conduct an informational interview, Adam conducted close to 100 interviews. With each conversation, Adam learned more about project management in the private sector, gained new mentors and ultimately confirmed that he did want to pursue project management. His interactions helped him to translate his Army skills to industry standard terminology. As an introvert, networking did not come naturally to Adam. At first, he felt like he was imposing on people but then realized after a few informational interviews that people are eager to help.  Adam reflects on the differences of project management between the military and the private sector. Because rank is not a factor in his current position, it's not always obvious how to get something accomplished. The job of a project manager is to lead cross-functional teams as an individual contributor and yet influence people to meet deadlines and finish projects. Building relationships and having expert knowledge are keys to being a successful project manager.Adam discusses how asking questions has earned him respect with coworkers and supervisors in his post-military roles. He learned that people are eager to help and asking questions builds teamwork, relationships and rapport. Adam encourages veterans to check their ego and stay humble. While some people will show appreciation toward a veteran, others are indifferent.When job searching, many roles do not post a salary range.  Adam discusses how his informational interviews and mentors gained through LinkedIn helped him uncover a desired salary range based on his background and skills. Adam and Lori end the podcast discussing leaving jobs in the private sector, sometimes even in the first year. While Adam acknowledges that finding a job that you are passionate about is ideal, it's not realistic for everybody. He instead encourages people to find jobs that match their skillsets and ones they enjoy in some capacity. When a job isn't right for you, it's okay to find something that is a better fit. Her past experiences, interactions, careers, and partnerships have led her to grow the roles she holds in the community; the VP of Volunteers with Conscious Capitalism Arizona, Sales Development with YellowBird, and the host of the Culture Crush Business Podcast. She is a spartan racer, past animal trainer, previous magician's assistant, and has a weakness for Oreo cookie shakes. Her journey working with people actually started working with animals as a teenager (don't worry we won't go that far back for her bio). She worked for over 15 years in the zoo industry working with animals and the public. Her passion for working with animals shifted into working with people in education, operations, and leadership roles. From there her passion for leadership and helping people develop has continued to grow. Her oldest daughter was the inspiration for her forming Black Girls Do Engineer Corporation when she stated that she wanted to be a Software Engineer at eight years old. Black Girls Do Engineer is passionate about developing young women in all areas of STEM. Black Girls Do Engineer provides mentoring, personal growth regimens, STEM projects and activities, and guidance on career paths based on insight from professional women that are leaders in the STEM industry. Our organization goals are to provide access, awareness, and advocate for two million Black-American girls to pursue STEM careers by the year 2050. Kara is an alumnus of The Prairie View A&M University and hold a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business in Executive MBA. Black Girls Do Engineer was founded based on Kara personal experiences in the STEM industry and always wishing she had someone who looked like her to show her the way. Now she is here to be the one who look like you to show you the way. She has gone through a lot of trails but now she has developed a STEM program to help girls ages 9- 21-year-old prepare and thrive the STEM industry. Her STEM program challenges girls to be critical thinkers and encourages girls to choose STEM and they are. Her challenges are paying off. She took girls in her organization who had no STEM background to finalist in the NASAWear Challenge, where they beat out 70 plus teams around the nation. In her 5-year career, she has managed 10 plus improvement projects starting at $1 million to multi-million dollars in the Oil & Gas industry and now serve as a Project Manager in the Space Industry. She has served as a Science and Engineering Lead and Diversity & Inclusion Region Chapter Leader for ERG groups in Corporate America. She also holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification and is one semester away from completing her Executive MBA. She was selected to participate in the National Black MBA Association Accelerator Program due to the impacts her STEM program has made not only in Texas, but California and South Carolina as well.
