The Mindful Marriage: Breaking Cycles and Building Connection in Christ with Ron Deal Ep.701

    Awesome Marriage Podcast

In this episode, Dr. Kim sits down with Ron Deal to talk about what it really means to build a mindful marriage. Ron shares lessons from his new book, Mindful Marriage, and how restoration therapy helped him and his wife Nan find healing and deeper connection. Together, they explore how faith, self-awareness, and emotional regulation can transform your relationship from the inside out.   Episode Insights: Authenticity is the foundation of lasting happiness. Emotional dysregulation is normal.  Our brains respond to threat, not fairness. Pain cycles drive repeated conflict. Growth and redemption matter more than blame. Quotes from Today's Episode: 'Happy wife, happy life' sounds catchy, but in reality, it's an empty promise. Lasting happiness in marriage comes from authenticity, not performance or pretending everything is okay. Every single one of us gets thrown off-balance emotionally. Some stay there longer, others move through it quickly, but emotional dysregulation is part of the human experience. There's nothing wrong about you because you get dysregulated. The brain can't tell the difference between a rattlesnake, a near-miss in traffic, or your spouse's criticism. Threat is threat. Our brains are wired for survival, not perfect communication. You don't have fifty different fights in marriage. You just have one ongoing pain cycle. Once you identify and understand your pain cycle, you can finally move beyond it together. Ignoring your pain doesn't make it go away—if anything, it makes your pain stronger, more insistent, and harder to escape. It's easy to point out the flaw in someone else, but it's vital to focus on your own growth. You may not forget your pain, but you can redeem what it does in your life. Choosing redemption over resentment is liberating. Couples Conversation Guide: Are there areas in our marriage where we tend to “perform” or pretend things are okay instead of being real with each other?    When conflict or hurt arises between you, how aware are you of what's really going on beneath the surface—your emotions, triggers, or past experiences? What's one practical step you can take this week to be more mindful in your marriage—whether that's pausing before reacting, praying together, or choosing to listen with empathy?   Mentioned in this episode: #1 Amazon Bestseller is available! On today's Promoted Episode of Experiencing Data, I'm talking with Lucas Thelosen, CEO of Gravity and creator of Orion, an AI analyst transforming how data teams work. Lucas was head of PS for Looker, and eventually became Head of Product for Google's Data and AI Cloud prior to starting his own data product company. We dig into how his team built Orion, the challenge of keeping AI accurate and trustworthy when doing analytical work, and how they're thinking about the balance of human control with automation when their product acts as a force multiplier for human analysts.   In addition to talking about the product, we also talk about how Gravity arrived at specific enough use cases for this technology that a market would be willing to pay for, and how they're thinking about pricing in today's more “outcomes-based” environment.  Incidentally, one thing I didn't know when I first agreed to consider having Gravity and Lucas on my show was that Lucas has been a long-time proponent of data product management and operating with a product mindset. In this episode, he shares the “ah-hah” moment where things clicked for him around building data products in this manner. Lucas shares how pivotal this moment was for him, and how it helped accelerate his career from Looker to Google and now Gravity. If you're leading a data team, you're a forward-thinking CDO, or you're interested in commercializing your own analytics/AI product, my chat with Lucas should inspire you!     Highlights/ Skip to: Lucas's breakthrough came when he embraced a data product management mindset (02:43) How Lucas thinks about Gravity as being the instrumentalists in an orchestra, conducted by the user (4:31) Finding product-market fit by solving for a common analytics pain point (8:11) Analytics product and dashboard adoption challenges: why dashboards die and thinking of analytics as changing the business gradually (22:25) What outcome-based pricing means for AI and analytics (32:08) The challenge of defining guardrails and ethics for AI-based analytics products [just in case somebody wants to “fudge the numbers”] (46:03) Lucas' closing thoughts about what AI is unlocking for analysts and how to position your career for the future  (48:35) Special Bonus for DPLC Community Members Are you a member of the Data Product Leadership Community? After our chat, I invited Lucas to come give a talk about his journey of moving from “data” to “product” and adopting a producty mindset for analytics and AI work. He was more than happy to oblige. Watch for this in late 2025/early 2026 on our monthly webinar and group discussion calendar.   Note: today's episode is one of my rare Promoted Episodes. Please help support the show by visiting Gravity's links below: Quotes from Today's Episode “The whole point of data and analytics is to help the business evolve. When your reports make people ask new questions, that's a win. If the conversations today sound different than they did three months ago, it means you've done your job, you've helped move the business forward.” — Lucas  “Accuracy is everything. The moment you lose trust, the business, the use case, it's all over. Earning that trust back takes a long time, so we made accuracy our number one design pillar from day one.” — Lucas  “Language models have changed the game in terms of scale. Suddenly, we're facing all these new kinds of problems, not just in AI, but in the old-school software sense too. Things like privacy, scalability, and figuring out who's responsible.” — Brian “Most people building analytics products have never been analysts, and that's a huge disadvantage. If data doesn't drive action, you've missed the mark. That's why so many dashboards die quickly.” — Lucas “Re: collecting feedback so you know if your UX is good: I generally agree that qualitative feedback is the best place to start, not analytics [on your analytics!] Especially in UX, analytics measure usage aspects of the product, not the subject human experience. Experience is a collection of feelings and perceptions about how something went.” — Brian Links Gravity: https://www.bygravity.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thelosen/ Email Lucas and team: hello@bygravity.com

We share practical ways we've learned to weather the storms in our own lives, from simplifying life to immersing ourselves in Scripture. We have all heard it. Someone looks at you with a smile and says, "Just be yourself." Nice idea, but have you ever tried it? It turns out being yourself is not nearly as simple as it sounds. In this episode, Dr. Bray digs into the science of authenticity and why the version of you that shows up at work, at home, or even at dinner with friends is often a carefully constructed blend of performance, prediction, and protection. You will hear how the brain's prefrontal cortex, default mode network, and even the amygdala shape your sense of self and sometimes keep you from showing up as the real you. We will explore why decades of cultural conditioning, family expectations, and even old survival strategies can bury your authentic self under layers of habit. More importantly, Dr. Bray shares the practical side of neuroscience: how neuroplasticity allows you to rewire your brain and excavate the parts of you that feel the most genuine. So whether you are leading a team, building a career, or simply trying to feel at home in your own skin, hit play. Dr. Bray will show you how science can help you do it, and maybe even convince you that the project of becoming yourself is the most worthwhile work you will ever take on. Quotes by Dr. Bray "Just be yourself" sounds easy, but your brain is running layers of predictions, protections, and performances that you may not even notice" "Your sense of self is shaped by repeated neural pathways—the habits of thought and behavior that you practice again and again" "Sometimes you uncover trauma responses—protective adaptations that once kept you safe but no longer serve you"

Their hope had been nailed to a cross and buried in a tomb. Disappointment hung heavy in the air as the promise of the resurrected Jesus was nowhere to be seen—until a stranger joined them on the road. Step by step, He listened, questioned, and opened the Scriptures until their cold hearts began to glow with the hope of the resurrection. Join Pastor Tommy Bailey as we walk that road together. In Luke 24:13–35, we'll see how Jesus meets us in our confusion, rekindles our faith through His Word, and turns the ache of “we had hoped” into the joy of hearts set ablaze.Sermon Notes & Quotes: https://thevillagechapel.com/resources/luke-24-13-35/To find more resources like these, follow us:Website: https://thevillagechapel.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVTzDbaiXVUAm_mUBDCTJAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tvcnashville/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tvcnashvilleX: https://twitter.com/tvcnashvilleTo support the ongoing mission of The Village Chapel go to https://thevillagechapel.com/give/. No matter what you do in life, do it with passion. We start the fourth week of our 7-week series of quotes based on themes from my book, "Senior Salute," with four quotes on the theme of "Passion."If you don't have passion for the things you endeavor to do, you will struggle to succeed. Passion ignites us to do our best. It fires us up to go out and attack whatever it is that we are passionate about. Those with passion bring more to the experience, both for themselves and for others, and their passion is contagious. Attack your endeavors with passion, excitement, energy, and enthusiasm. Put your heart and soul into all you do and show it to the world. When that happens, nothing can stop you from becoming all that you seek to become. I wrote "Senior Salute" as a follow-up to my most popular book ever, "Inspiration for the Graduate." Both are gift books for coaches or parents to give to their senior athletes. "Inspiration for the Graduate" makes for a great graduation gift, and "Senior Salute" is a great gift to give on Senior Night or at the End-of-Season Banquet. Each book is filled with quotes based on various Team Themes that, hopefully, the coaches have talked with and worked on with their teams at some point in the season. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.
