From an early age, Erykah Pasha '24 has been driven to provide a voice for those who have been systematically oppressed and suppressed in her hometown of Syracuse, and she always knew Syracuse University was where she wanted to study. Enrolling in the dual degree political science and sociology program in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences, Pasha credits the University for providing her with the resources and, more importantly, the opportunities to effect change. On this 'Cuse Conversation, Pasha, a Kessler Scholar and McNair Scholar, discusses her research, how she hopes to create change through this summer experience and how her time on campus helped her find her voice. As Pride Month is celebrated across the country, Pasha, who identifies as queer, shares how both the Intercultural Collective and the LGBTQ Resource Center play a pivotal role in her development as a campus leader and how the programs and engagement efforts offered through the LGBTQ Resource Center created a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

Well, how about we look at uniqueness from a "construction" point of view. Instead of just trying to dream up the uniqueness, how about we look at it with "guardrails" so that we hit the target every time? The Nonlinear Library
EA - EA might systematically generate a scarcity mindset that produces low-integrity actors by Severin

The Nonlinear Library

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 26, 2023 6:01

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA might systematically generate a scarcity mindset that produces low-integrity actors, published by Severin on April 25, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic status: Highly speculative quick Facebook post. Thanks to Anna Riedl for nudging me to share it here anyway. Something I've noticed recently is that people who are in a bad place in their lives tend to have a certain sticky sleazy black holey feel to them. Something around untrustworthiness, low integrity, optimizing for themselves regardless of the cost for the people around them. I've met people like that, and I think when others felt around me like my energy was subtly and indescribably off, it was due to me being sticky in that way, too. Game-theoretically, it makes total sense for people to be a bit untrustworthy while they are in a bad place in their life. If you're in a place of scarcity, it is entirely reasonable to be strategic about where you put your limited resources. Then, it's just reasonable to only be loyal to others as long as you can get something out of it yourself and to defect as soon as they don't offer obvious short-term gains. And similarly, it make sense for the people around you to be a bit weary of you when you are in that place. And now, a bit of a hot take: I think most if not all of Effective Altruism's recent scandals have been due to low-integrity sticky behavior. And, I think some properties of EA systematically make people sticky. We might want to invest some thought and effort into fixing them. So, here's some of EA's sticky-people-producing properties I can spontaneously think of, plus first thoughts on how to fix them that aren't supposed to be final solutions: 1. Utilitarianism Yudkowsky wrote a thing that I think is true: "Go three-quarters of the way from deontology to utilitarianism and then stop. You are now in the right place. Stay there at least until you have become a god." Meanwhile, SBF and probably a bunch of other people in EA (including me at times) have gone all four quarters of the way. If there's no upper bound to when it is enough to make the numbers go up, you'll be in a place of scarcity no matter what, and will be incentivized to defect indefinitely. I think an explicit belief of "defecting is not a good utilitarian strategy" doesn't help here: Becoming sticky is not a decision, but a subtle shift in your cognition that happens when your animal instincts pick up that your prefrontal cortex thinks you are in a place of scarcity. Basically, I think Buddhism is what utilitarianism would be if it made sense and was human-brain-shaped: Optimizing for global optima, but from a place of compassion and felt oneness with all sentient beings, not from the standpoint of a technocratic puppet master. 2. Ever-precarious salaries EA funders like to base their allocation of funds on evidence, and they like to be able to adjust course quickly as soon as there are higher expected-value opportunities. From the perspective of naive utilitarianism, this completely makes sense. From the perspective of grantees, however, it feels like permanently having to justify your existence. And that is a situation that makes you go funny in the head in a way that is not conducive to getting just about any job done, unless it's a job like fraud that inherently involves short-term thinking and defecting on society. Whether or not you treat people as trustworthy and competent, you'll tend to find that you are right. I don't know how to fix this. Especially at the place we are at now, where both the FTX collapse and funders' increased cautiousness made the precarity of EA funding even worse. Currently, I'm seeing two dimensions to at least partially solving this issue: Building healthier, more sustainable relationships between community members. That's why I'm building Authentic R...

We're digging into how to know which diet is right for your fertility. POP QUIZ: What exactly makes a great diet to optimize fertility? - Keto? - Carnivore? - Paleo? - AIP? Truth is, it's none of the above. The most important factor is consuming the diet that is right for YOU ✅Because those diets may have worked for someone else, but ✅We're all DIFFERENT and that diet might not be right for YOU That's why it's so important to figure out > How food impacts your reproductive health > Which foods to AVOID to reduce inflammation > Which foods to ADD to prepare for pregnancy success Remember: If your body is under attack, it wants to survive, not procreate. Once you've figured out the foods that are right for your body, you can personalize your diet so that you can improve your fertility. One of my favorite ways to do this is by starting an elimination diet: - Take out the TOP allergens for 10 days (gluten, dairy, corn, eggs, soy, peanuts, processed sugar and alcohol) - Systematically reintroduce the foods over the course of 30 days. This is a customized approach and you'll know for sure how FOOD impacts your body. John received undergraduate degrees in Physics and Mathematics from Boston College, and a graduate degree in Physics from Syracuse University. He subsequently worked for GE (Aerospace Electronics: Utica, NY), Mohawk Data Sciences (Herkimer, NY), and Monolithic Memories (Cupertino, CA). After retiring at 34 (due to his successful investment program) he was actively involved in various community activities. In 1984 John and his wife Elaine bought a rental property in Emerald Isle, NC (sold in 2015). In 2009 they sold their primary residence in NY and moved to Morehead City, NC. Throughout this period they have kept a Summer Adirondack (NY) cottage. As a resident of the Adirondacks, he has been a participating member of several environmental organizations (e.g., the Adirondack Council, Association for Protection of the Adirondacks, Residents' Committee to Protect the Adirondacks, Sierra Club, NYS Federation of Lakes). This led to a 40+ year commitment as a Science advocate. During the initial years John was a leading individual on three NY state-wide issues: electrical energy options, water extraction, and water quality. He received no funding for any of this activity. In subsequent years, his areas of interest and expertise expanded to include climate change, COVID-19, and election integrity. John's main focus is about implementing genuine science as the basis of our technical policies. Today we will continue the accent reduction exercise with some fun tongue twisters in English. And with the help of a point-of-view story, you will learn grammar in context without memorizing any boring rules. Hi, everybody! I am Georgiana, your English teacher and founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help you speak English fluently. Do you know how you can help me? You can share the podcast with your friends and family. Tell them to go to SpeakEnglishPodcast.com and get my free mini-course. That would mean a lot to me. Thanks. Oh, by the way, remember that you can check out the transcript on my website: speakenglishpodcast.com/podcast Ok, let's start! Last week we started this accent reduction exercise by focusing on the S sound with the help of some fun tongue twisters. So, let's remember the tongue twisters we used last week to help you improve your English pronunciation. I will go fast, but if you want to practice them, you can do so by listening to the previous episode on my website. Listen and repeat: #1 I saw Esau kissing Kate. I saw Esau, he saw me, and she saw I saw Esau. #2 Santa's Short Suit Shrunk. #3 You cuss, I cuss, we all cuss for asparagus. #4 Thin sticks, thick bricks. #5 Systematically assisting Sisyphus's stealthy cyst-susceptible sister.  I hope you're having fun.  Let's practice with new tongue twisters. Are you ready? Let's go! I will start saying each tongue twister slowly, and then I will go faster. At first, they may seem very difficult, so make sure you have the text in front of you to be able to follow it better. Ok. So, I will say it very slowly: 1. She saw Sharif's shoes on the sofa. But was she so sure those were Sharif's shoes she saw? Now I will say it faster. She saw Sharif's shoes on the sofa. But was she so sure those were Sharif's shoes she saw? Ok. Even faster! She saw Sharif's shoes on the sofa. But was she so sure those were Sharif's shoes she saw? Let's continue! 2) The chic Sikh's sixty-sixth sheep is sick. Let's say it faster! The chic Sikh's sixty-sixth sheep is sick.   Even faster! The chic Sikh's sixty-sixth sheep is sick. 3) There's a pessimistic pest amidst us. Ok. Say it faster! There's a pessimistic pest amidst us. Even faster! There's a pessimistic pest amidst us. 4) Which witch switched the Swiss wristwatches? Say it faster! Which witch switched the Swiss wristwatches? Can you say it faster? Which witch switched the Swiss wristwatches? 5) She sells seashells by the seashore. Let's say it faster! She sells seashells by the seashore. Even faster! She sells seashells by the seashore. Well, that's all for now; I hope you had fun practicing your English pronunciation, and you didn't get tongue-tied like Smith. We'll see what happened to him and why he was crowned king.  But before we continue… If you want to know how to speak English using the proper techniques, visit SpeakEnglishPodcast.com and subscribe to my mailing list. Today we are going to do an accent reduction exercise with some fun tongue twisters in English. To be specific, we will practice the S sound. And with the help of a mini-story, you will improve your English fluency. A mini-story is very simple but very powerful. Here's how it works: I ask easy questions deliberately so that you can simulate a conversation. It's almost like talking to another person in English. Do you remember what a tongue twister is?  It can be a difficult phrase that we say quickly, usually because of a sequence of almost similar sounds.  For example, "Peter Piper picked a pickle of pickled peppers." Many people use tongue twisters to speak clearly, including actors, politicians, etc. These allow you to practice pronunciation and agility when it comes to producing sounds in English. And for language learners, tongue twisters are very useful to use as accent reduction exercises. So today, we are going to practice English pronunciation with new tongue twisters. Are you ready? Let's go! I will start saying each tongue twister slowly, and then I will go faster.  At first, they may seem very difficult, so make sure you have the text in front of you to be able to follow it better. Ok. So, I will say it very slowly: 1. I saw Esau kissing Kate. I saw Esau, he saw me, and she saw I saw Esau. Are you ready to speed it up? (Say it faster.) I saw Esau kissing Kate. I saw Esau, he saw me, and she saw I saw Esau. Ok. Even faster! I saw Esau kissing Kate. I saw Esau, he saw me, and she saw I saw Esau. I hope you're having fun. Let's continue! 2) Santa's Short Suit Shrunk. Ok. Now I'm gonna speed it up! (say it faster.) Santa's Short Suit Shrunk. Ok. Even faster! Santa's Short Suit Shrunk. 3) You cuss, I cuss, we all cuss for asparagus. Ok. Say it faster! You cuss, I cuss, we all cuss for asparagus. Even faster! You cuss, I cuss, we all cuss for asparagus. 4) Thin sticks, thick bricks. Ok. Say it faster! Thin sticks, thick bricks. Can you say it faster? Thin sticks, thick bricks. 5) Systematically assisting Sisyphus's stealthy cyst-susceptible sister. Can you say it faster? Systematically assisting Sisyphus's stealthy cyst-susceptible sister. Even faster! Systematically assisting Sisyphus's stealthy cyst-susceptible sister. Ok, I know that was hard. But that's it for now; I really hope you're having fun practicing your English pronunciation, but before we continue… If you want to know how to speak English using the proper techniques, visit SpeakEnglishPodcast.com and subscribe to my mailing list. It seems natural that the most skilled and talented managers should be able to outperform on a consistent basis. In reality, the data doesn't support this and it actually shows the opposite. In public markets, persistence, or the ability of the best to stay the best, just isn't shown in the evidence. If the fund managers with all their large payrolls, research, and connections can't reliably outperform then the advisors picking stocks in their client accounts are at an even bigger disadvantage. Index returns have been an amazing wealth creator over the last 100 years but indexes also have inefficiencies and pitfalls than can be avoided to target higher expected returns. Systematically targeting and improving the indexes allows for a more reliable way to seek returns above the index for long-term investors.       Have questions for an upcoming episode? Rob's formula for achieving perpetual success: systematically fusing art, science and magic. A great tagline, yes, but what does it really mean? Well, think of art as starting with you, the creator. The creator of your life, the creator of your business, the creator of every moment of your day. Science is then the ways in which you organize your creations, building systems of living and systems of operating professionally. Finally, the magic comes when art and science are working in harmony. Unseen universal forces that conspire on your behalf to push you in the direction you want to go. Applying these concepts over and over in everything you do, constantly improving and optimizing, a better life is all but inevitable. On this episode, we've got the founders of Muvez, Eric and Ryan Cruz, who first burst onto the national radar on an episode of Shark Tank. The primary Muvez product is a shoe with a detachable outsole, which then becomes a slipper, transitioning between inside and outside without ever having to take it off. They've found quite a bit of success, but now they're looking to raise money to scale the business, and Rob has some solid advice for them about the benefits and challenges of taking on venture capital. Blair Bryngelson is a serial entrepreneur and inventor whose latest product combats the “dead arm” that often results from cuddling one's partner in bed. It's called the Spoonie Pillow, and is essentially a pillow that slides onto your arm. He launched a Kickstarter campaign and sold 3,000 units out of the gate. The customers even found more use cases for it than originally intended. Now he's looking to ramp up as a direct-to-consumer business, but supply chain issues are presenting a challenge. Rob encourages Blair to plug into an existing home goods infrastructure so he can continue to do what he does best and be a great inventor instead of an inexperienced operator.
