Michael McFaul, Obama's Ambassador to Russia, tells Michael Krasny a new cold war is shaping up in a kind of three way with China, Russia and the U.S. as main players. While the geopolitical dynamics are familiar, the stand-off between autocratic regimes and the self actualizing west is different.Grey Matter host Dr. Krasny got specific. How does Trump's tilt toward Russia explain what's going on? What about the Ukrainian mining deal? Michael Krasny brought up President Trump and statecraft as well as Trump's tariff strategy, the way he views U.S. allies and his overall mendacity. Krasny and Ross went on to talk about Yasser Arafat, which led the Ambassador to highlight what he could have done better with the PLO leader, and to reflect on the Camp David talks and what he wished he had done. The architect of the Oslo accords, Ambassador Dennis Ross, who worked in five U.S. presidential administrations trying to broker peace between Israelis and Palestinians, joined us on the heels of the deaths in Gaza, at the hands of the Israelis, of seven humanitarian workers. Ambassador Ross spoke of the present conflict as the worst he has witnessed and he discussed the trauma of both the Palestinian and Israeli sides as well as the differences in the Israel, West Bank and Gaza governments, the security misreadings by the Israeli government, the diversions of humanitarian aid by Hamas and the legacy of October 7th and the hostages taken by Hamas. Ambassador Ross spoke, too, of Israel's fraught political stability and the likely future for Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition. He also provided an assessment of Hamas militarily and gauged the effect on the region of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the role of Turkey's Erdogan and Egypt under El-Sisi. He spoke, too, of the perniciousness of Hamas as well as condemning the Israeli occupation and the incorrect use of the word genocide to condemn Israel. We had the opportunity as well to speak with the Ambassador about Iran's role in the region and the prospects of a single versus a two states solution and what to expect after the war is over. A wide-ranging, incisive discussion replete with first-rate insights.

It is the week between Christmas and New Years so I wanted to do something a little different this week and bring you one of my favorite episodes from deep in the archives. Now, I started Global Dispatches ten years ago, in 2013. And back then, aside from the BBC, there weren't really any international affairs and world news podcasts. Today, of course, the landscape is a bit richer and I am happy for that--I don't view other international affaris podcasts as competition, but rather believe that a rising tide lifts all boats so the more the merrier. But ten years ago the podcast industry was in its infancy and the format of Global Dispatches was a bit different than it is today. I would sit down with people who had interesting lives or careers in foreign policy and international affairs and interview them about their life and career, with digressions about the historic foreign policy moments in which their or career intersected. I did around 200 of these longform biographical interviews over the first several years of the podcast. I did so many of these I can't name them all here, but some names you might recognize include George Mitchell, James Stavridis, Joseph Nye, Nick Kristoff, Robin Wright, Fareed Zacharia, Jessica Tuchman Matthews, Dennis Ross, Linda Thomas Greenfield, and so many more. These interviews are mostly behind a paywall at this point, and unlocked for paying subscribers via apple podcasts or Spotify. But for today, I wanted to bring everyone my 2016 conversation with Clarissa Ward. She is CNN's chief international correspondent. At the time, Clarissa Ward had recently snuck into rebel held territory in Syria, including Aleppo. And it was because of her several excursions into Aleppo that she was invited to brief the Security Council later that year. We kick off with a long conversation about the mechanics of sneaking into rebel held territory and the risks that entails. We then have a long conversation about how and why she became a journalist, including her time in Beirut and Baghdad.   And I have been thinking about this nearly 8 year old interview because in December Clarissa Ward became one of the first, if only, western journalist to enter Gaza without embeding with the IDF. She filed a harrowing report from a makeshift hospital in southern Gaza, which I will link to in the shownotes of this episode. 

As the war in Gaza continues, it may seem the worst possible time to revisit the idea of a permanent political resolution of the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict. US President Joe Biden however, says a two-state solution is still possible. So how realistic is that aspiration? If not two states, what alternatives are there and which country, if any, is trusted by both sides to broker a deal? Amidst the violence, is there any reason to hope? Shaun Ley is joined by: Anshel Pfeffer, an Israeli journalist based in Jerusalem who writes for the Economist and the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
