Joining Jill and Doron on the 36th episode of the podcast, the eighteenth and final of our second season, to tell us his story is British journalist Matthew Engel, who attended Carmel College from 1959 to ‘69, preceded by his two older brothers. Matthew attended Manchester University and became a journalist, mostly for The Guardian and later the Financial Times. Initially, he specialized in sport, and has covered over 70 different sports, from cricket and football to tiddlywinks and underwater hockey. Over the years, he reported on just about everything, including the First Gulf War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11 - and from all seven continents, the South Pole included. He lives on a farm in rural Herefordshire, where he is now a county councillor, with his publisher wife Hilary of 34 years, their daughter Vika, and their two dogs, three cats and three horses. Hear Matthew talk about Carmel's horsehair mattresses; listening to ‘Around the Horn'; ‘what's wrong with the world today'; smoking in the pillbox; becoming known as the school cynic; an attempt to bribe the school barber; Carmel's moment in The Guardian's newsroom; the golden age of newspapers; and the most important piece he ever wrote, “The Day the Sky fell in” (see https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2005/dec/03/familyandrelationships.health). Thank you, Matthew Engel, for turning us again to Carmel days! Lt. Col. Tom Williams USMC (Ret.) - Doorsteps of Hell: The Arizona & Tropical Jungles 1969 -1970; The Heart of a Marine Series, Book 1. This is episode 721 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. On 20 December 1944, Tom Williams was born Tom Collins in Savannah, GA. Abandonment by his biological father at the age of six months old, profoundly impacted Tom's early life causing his mother to farm him out to relatives while she worked to make a living for them both. At the age of six years old, Tom's mother met and married U.S. Air Force Major Carl F. Williams Jr. This fortuitous marriage would bring about a radical change in Tom's life. As a military dependent, he immediately found himself traveling the world, living in foreign lands, learning about Ancient Roman history and archaeology, assimilating a basic conversance in the French, Arabic, and Japanese Languages, as well as being immersed in their respective cultures. After Tom's dad retired, his family moved to the Williams' ancestral homestead established in 1832, in Dooly County Georgia. Yet again, living, working, and learning to manage the family farm would have another major influence on Tom's future interests, especially regarding his love for the agrarian way of life. From 1964-68 Tom attended North Georgia College (NGC) acquiring a BA degree in history and a minor in psychology and political science. He then attended the Marine Corps' Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, Va., where he set the Marine Corps' record of 52 seconds for the Obstacle Courses and was the Platoon Honor Man. He then completed The Basic School (TBS) for all newly commissioned Marine Corps 2nd lieutenants, also at Quantico, graduating in the top 10% of his class. Before leaving Quantico, Tom then attended and graduated from High Intensity Language Training (HILT) for Vietnamese. As an infantry officer, Tom deployed as a 2nd lieutenant to Vietnam in 1969-70 where he commanded an infantry platoon in Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, followed by commanding a reconnaissance platoon as a 1st lieutenant in Alpha Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Subsequent to this combat tour, Tom commanded the Shore Party Platoon at the 1st Marine Brigade, followed by commanding the 81mm Mortar Platoon in 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station, Hawaii. Twenty-five months later, on two days' notice, Tom was redeployed back to Vietnam, as a captain, where he served as a school trained aerial observer. During this second combat deployment, Tom was imbedded with a Vietnamese O-1 Bird Dog squadron flying 183 combat missions from Hue Phu Bai Airfield, during the 1972 Easter Offensive. During his twenty-nine-year career, Tom participated in six amphibious deployments: four Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) and two Marine Expeditionary Brigades (MEBs). In 1976 as a school trained Communications Officer, he participated in the Non-Combat Evacuation Operation (NEO) of Beirut, Lebanon. In 1980-83, under secret orders, he was assigned as the regimental operations officer for developing the one-of-a-kind Mechanized Combined-Arms Task Force (MCATF), at Twenty-nine Palms, CA. In 1983-86, he was the Infantry Weapons Officer at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) Washington, DC, responsible for replacing or improving all Marine Corps infantry weapons. From 1986-90, he was the Amphibious Operations Officer for Commander Sixth Fleet's NATO staff, Commander Striking Forces South (CSFS) in Naples, Italy, responsible for coordinating all NATO amphibious training exercises throughout the Mediterranean Sea. That was followed by his participation in the First Gulf War, 1990-91, as a G3 operations officer with I MEF HQ. His last major active-duty assignment was as the G3 for the first Marine Component HQ to the European Command (EUCOM), in Stuttgart, Germany, 1993-96. After retiring in 1997, he spent eleven years as a contract mentor and trainer, six years in Saudi Arabia (1998-06) and five years in Afghanistan (2006-12). Currently, he lives an agrarian life on a 75-acre cattle property, Camelot, located on the Lamington Rain Forest Plateau in southeastern Queensland, Australia. He raises beef cattle, sells free-range eggs, and is a beekeeper, a gardener, and is developing his home into a Bed & Breakfast, while also writing a series of books, Heart of a Marine, in which he shares his Marine Corps experiences and his life's lessons learned. Our focus will be Col. Williams book series Heart of a Marine - Book 1 - Doorsteps of Hell: The Arizona & Tropical Jungles 1969-1970 Incredible book. Amazing conversation. So much to learn. Send us a textRet. Ambassador Chas Freeman, Jr., discusses the widening wars in the Middle East, Israel's hegemonic ambitions, and the catastrophic collapse of U.S. influence in the region as a result of the Biden administration's one-sided, ineffectual diplomacy. By arming and funding Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza and brutal war in Lebanon, the United States is breeding hatred in hundreds of thousands of people who are being bombed by U.S. weapons. He notes that "If you bomb people, they bomb back," and warns of the grave consequences if the United States does not change course. Freeman was in the U.S. Foreign Service for 30 years. He served as President Nixon's principal interpreter during Nixon's ground-breaking visit to China in 1972 and was the U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the First Gulf War. He is the author of three books on foreign policy and two books on diplomacy,
VBC Scuttlebutt welcomes bestselling author Tony Swofford to talk about his iconic memoir, Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles. The book is a raw and unflinching memoir that delves into the experiences of a Marine sniper during the First Gulf War. Swofford, who enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at a young age, offers a gritty, firsthand account of the psychological and emotional challenges faced by soldiers both on and off the battlefield. The book begins with Swofford's grueling training as a Marine, where he is shaped into a skilled sniper. The narrative is filled with vivid descriptions of the dehumanizing aspects of military life, where individuality is stripped away, and soldiers are conditioned to kill. Swofford doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of military culture, including the intense physical and mental pressures that lead to a profound sense of alienation and existential angst. When Swofford and his unit are deployed to the Saudi Arabian desert during Operation Desert Storm, the anticipation of combat weighs heavily on the soldiers. However, much of their time is spent in a state of frustrating inactivity, enduring the boredom and psychological strain of waiting for a battle that never comes. The memoir captures the paradox of modern warfare, where the soldiers' most significant battles are often fought within themselves rather than against the enemy. Swofford's account is deeply introspective, exploring his inner turmoil and disillusionment with the war. He reflects on the violence and destruction inherent in his role as a sniper, the moral ambiguity of war, and the impact of his service on his sense of identity. The book is not just a war memoir but also a meditation on the personal costs of being a soldier—the loss of innocence, the struggle with post-traumatic stress, and the difficulty of reintegrating into civilian life after experiencing the horrors of war. Jarhead is notable for its stark, unromanticized portrayal of military life. Swofford's writing is direct and honest, offering a sobering view of the emotional toll that war takes on those who fight it. His account challenges the glorified image of war often seen in popular culture, revealing the deep psychological scars left on soldiers. In 2005, Jarhead was adapted into a Hollywood movie directed by Sam Mendes and starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Anthony “Swoff” Swofford. The film stays true to the tone and themes of the book, focusing on the boredom, frustration, and internal conflicts faced by Marines during the Gulf War. While the movie captures the desolate landscapes and the tension of waiting for combat, it also highlights the camaraderie and dark humor that soldiers use to cope with the psychological stress of war. The film was well-received for its performances and cinematography, though some critics noted that it, like the book, is more of a character study than a traditional war movie. It emphasizes the psychological effects of war over action, making it a unique entry in the war film genre. Both the book and the movie offer a compelling look at the complexities of military life and the lasting impact of war on those who serve. For those that watched the non-stop news footage of the first Gulf War (1991), it is easy to think that this was a war fought entirely from the air. In fact, this is considered to be one of the most successful uses of military aircraft in history. But what about the warriors on the ground? What was it like to cross the open desert on foot and engage with a dug in enemy? My guest today is retired Marine Corps Lt. Col, John Foldberg. John had a long and distinguished career in the Marine Corps that included leading a Marine infantry company to a an engagement with the Iraqi Army as Desert Storm was just beginning. This story brings out the human side of a major military operation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why were the 1980s pivotal in so many respects? Think the giddy days of glasnost and perestroika, the end of the cold war—of the whole Soviet Union in fact, liberalisation and globalisation, GATT and open borders, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the rise of Rajiv Gandhi—who stepped on the gas and pushed the country towards a more open economy.I became a lobbyist in Delhi in the 80s. I was barely twenty when I joined as a fresher, in 1980. When I quit my job and returned home to Bangalore in 1988, I had aged more than the chronology of the eight years would suggest. As a young man growing into his own, I was privileged to have been in the middle of the most pivotal period of Indian administration and world history since WWII. Up close and in the middle of it all. It was a lesson in how policy and administration works, it was a lesson in understanding the scale of their enterprise, and it was a lesson in humility. When you are in your twenties, you have the answer to all problems—and there's a good side to that because you feel both empowered and a participant, with access to the centres of power. But my guest today was one of those who was, himself a centre of power—Chinmay Gharekhan. Of the many important offices he held, one of which was in the Prime Minister's Office—both during the time of Indira Gandhi and then Rajiv Gandhi. And then he was India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. His book is a memoir of his days at the Prime Minister's Office, the real seat of power in India and following that in the United Nations Security Council during the period of the First Gulf War—another greatly pivotal period for us.Chinmay Gharekhan is the author of the memoir, Centres Of Power - My Years In The Prime Minister's Office and Security Council. It is always fascinating to think of our history—as these things influence the way we think today—and when you have someone who had a ringside seat to those events, you listen carefully. And joining me from his home in Scarsdale in New York is Ambassador Gharekhan.ABOUT THE AUTHORChinmaya R. Gharekhan, a distinguished member of the Indian Foreign Service, served in several capitals in different continents. He had the unique privilege of working with two prime ministers, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, for a period of about five years. He spent the better part of his career dealing with the United Nations. As ambassador of India to the United Nations in New York, he represented India on the Security Council during 1991–1992 and was twice president of the Security Council. He was appointed prime minister's special envoy for West Asia and the Middle East Peace Process during 2005–2009.Buy Centres Of Power: https://amzn.to/3DmnM2uWHAT'S THAT WORD?!Co-host Pranati "Pea" Madhav joins Ramjee Chandran in "WHAT'S THAT WORD?!", where they discuss the etymology of "HOIST WITH ONE'S OWN PETARD"CONTACT USReach us by mail: theliterarycity@explocity.com or simply, tlc@explocity.comOr here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theliterarycityOr here: https://www.instagram.com/explocityblr/

Here is Dr. Fuller's Bio from his website https://theoldgrayman.com My name is T.C. Fuller. I am originally from California. I grew up in some occasionally rough places, in a shattered family, and was out on my own at 16. I put myself through prep school and college, got a degree and a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, then headed off into the world. After my initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, with all the “usual” infantry officer schools, I was off to the races. Over the next decade, I served in a variety of jobs. Most notably, I was an mechanized infantry platoon leader in the First Gulf War, then an Explosive Ordnance Disposal company commander twice, first in the Sinai Desert, Egypt as part of the Multinational Force and Observers, then at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After that, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I served in various capacities in the FBI, working just about every investigative area in the Bureau's jurisdiction at one time or another during my 20 year career. Lots of street level criminal investigations, several years of counter-terrorism investigations, and even the occasional counter-intelligence case. There were other jobs in the FBI as well, including interrogator in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, time doing all kinds of stuff in Afghanistan, Firearms Instructor (both in the field and at the FBI Academy), Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Congressional Liaison up on Capitol Hill. In my spare time, I added a Master's of Education and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, as well as publishing a book under a nom de plume. Once I retired, I opened my own firm, doing private investigations, executive protection, and consulting (www.thehorusgroup.net). I have lived and worked in all kinds of places, doing all kinds of things. Importantly, that includes living and working across the U.S. and overseas, including war zones. And I have survived this long not only based on luck, but by being a Gray Man. By passing unnoticed when possible, seeing trouble before it sees me and leaving, escaping trouble when it finds me despite my best efforts, and, when all else has failed, by forcing the issue in my favor.I know what has worked for me, what has allowed me to survive long enough to earn my gray, to become an Old Gray Man. I want to use that knowledge and experience to help you, should you want to pursue a low profile approach in your own life.Be safe and stay low! This is the incredible but true story of an Englishman—a dockworker in Bombay in the 1940s, who became a smuggler around the time of Independence. Not far offshore from the Ferry Wharf in Mumbai is a small island. It's only some 100 metres out by boat, and you can see it from Ferry Wharf. It's called Cross Island. You can see Cross Island on Google Maps. But even people who have lived in Mumbai all their lives are not aware that this island even exists.Mystery has always shrouded Cross Island. And like every abandoned or uninhabited place, it is beset by urban legend. The usual stuff… it's haunted… it has ghosts… but the most compelling mystery of Cross Island is the story of the gold supposedly buried there. My guest today, Godfrey Pereria reads a passage about the gold that was buried on Cross Island because of the doings of the famous Portuguese poet Luis de Camoes. And about how the ship captain who actually hid the gold on the island was killed in a fight and how, since then, no one has been able to find the gold.Godfrey Pereira is the author of the book, Four And Twenty Blackbirds. He chanced upon the story of an Englishman, Charlie Strongbow,—an Englishman, born and raised in Bombay and a dockworker in the Bombay docks.Charlie Strongbow was one of a few Englishmen who were in India at the time of Independence, but did not leave India. Returning to England was not an option for them as they had nothing there. He and 23 others—hence four and twenty—British people move to Cross Island to set up a smuggling operation. We have all read colonial and independence and partition stories all of which tend to be about people at the top of society or who are responsible for historical events. But Godfrey Pereira's historical fiction novel highlights another point of view. It focuses on this group of Britishers of lowly status—men of calloused hands and base desires—trying to survive independence. It's a new perspective on the colonial era.And of course, there's always gold. There's no evidence that the poet Luis de Camoes decamped with stolen gold, but the damnedest thing is that in 2021—just two years ago—workers dredging in Cross Island found two bars of gold stuck in their dredging equipment. Was this the gold that de Camoes had decamped with? Or was it all urban legend Godfrey Pereira joins me from his home in West Palm Beach, Florida so we can ask him.ABOUT GODFREY PEREIRABorn in Pali Village, Bandra, Bombay, Godfrey Joseph Pereira graduated from college with a degree in English Literature and Philosophy. What followed was a career in journalism. He worked with leading national magazines and worked as War Correspondent covering the First Gulf War from Israel. His first novel Bloodline Bandra was published by HarperCollins in 2014. His second novel is Four And Twenty Blackbirds, a work of historical fiction. He has just finished his third novel The Incredible India Brownwash. He has lived and worked as a journalist in Bombay, New York City and New Jersey and now works and resides in West Palm Beach, Florida. In this episode of Somebody Gets Me, I am joined by Peter Man, CEO & Founder of Virginia-based Oransi, a leading air purification company known for its efficient, intuitive, and reliable products. Peter, proudly identifies as autistic and is on a mission to raise awareness about autism in order to improve the lives of others. He discusses the stigmas that come with being autistic and how society can work towards changing them, stressing the importance of embracing one's differences and focusing on their strengths to achieve success. Peter touches on the challenges faced by the autistic community, specifically the high unemployment rate. He believes that the problem lies not with autistic individuals, but with the neurotypical hiring process that is not inclusive. The interview process is often designed for social extroverts, which makes it difficult for those who are not wired in that way to succeed. He offers support to those Neurodivergent individuals who need help navigating that aspect of the business world. Peter encourages a mindset of diversity and inclusion to help solve complex problems and emphasizes the need to have awareness about oneself and society in order to set proper expectations. Throughout the episode, the speaker shares their experiences and insights gained from being a part of the autistic community, highlighting the importance of compassion and self-love. Ultimately, the episode serves as a call to action for society to be more accepting and accommodating of those who are different than the historically perceived norm. ----------------------------------------------------- Peter Mann is the CEO & Founder of Virginia-based Oransi, a leading air purification company known for its efficient, intuitive, and reliable products. Eight soldiers from the Britain's Special Air Service flew deep into northwestern Iraq on the night of January 22nd, 1991. Their callsign was Bravo Two Zero. Their mission was to destroy the SCUD missiles Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was using against Israel. A young goat herder stumbled across the patrol after it was on the ground for less than a day. With their cover blown and no way to call for help, the eight solders attempted to fight their way more than 100 miles across the desert to Syria. Only one made it. This book was written by Bravo Two Zero's patrol leader and tells the story of what happened.

I spent a lot of time at my dance studio during childhood—the Tri-Cities Academy of Ballet was like a second home to me and the owners/teachers, Joel & Debra Rogo, became an extended family, as did my fellow dancers. Many big life moments happened while I was at the studio, including the moment the First Gulf War began (while my brother was on the front lines as a sniper in the Marines) and the first time I asked someone out on a date. Today, I'm going to share five life lessons that I learned from my time as a dancer. What You'll Learn: Why it's often best to mold something to fit you instead of molding yourself to fit it How focus is a proactive behavior that can help you move from fear to freedom Why loosening up and stretching (physically and emotionally) is beneficial How balance is not static and requires constant realignment How the real purpose is not to get to a certain place, but to enjoy each step These are just five of the many powerful life lessons I learned from being a dancer. Whether or not you have ever danced, you can apply these teachings to your own life so that you can live a life with more freedom, ease, and joy. Douglas Hostetter – Mennonite and Conscientious Objector -- served in the middle of a hot zone during the VietNam War supporting the people who lived there. His is an amazing story. Rebecca McKean and I spoke with Mr Hostetter at Gebhard's Beer Culture Bar in Manhattan's Upper West Side on Juneteenth and Father's day, 2022. We will post our conversation with Douglas in two parts. In the second part of our conversation, Douglas Hostetter describes his daily activities in and around the Tam Ky battle zone during the Viet Nam War – his interaction with the American Marines and a very different relationship with U.S. officers who saw his positive work with the local population – as sapping GI morale. This led to a decision he had to make when he learned that the CIA was putting out rumors that could lead to his assassination. He describes surviving the violence of the 2 -week TET offensive of 1968 – and the human devastation that he witnessed afterwards. Douglass Hostetter's Viet Nam experiences established his life path working for peace throughout the world -- in Nicaragua during the Contra War – in Iraq with his attempts to prevent the First Gulf War by trading a plane-full of medicine with the Iraqis for American and UN hostages -- and his work to save Bosnian students from genocide in the 1990s . In a world rife with intense violence -- this story of a man of non-violence should be heard.Alan Winson See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

You may have heard about the first Gulf War - basically the entire world vs. Saddam Hussein. But though 34 countries - 34! - entered the alliance against Iraq, Israel didn't. So why on earth did missiles begin to rain down on Israel? In this episode, Noam breaks down how the 1991 Gulf War affected ordinary Israelis, tested the US-Israel relationship, and even challenged the long-held Zionist ethos. ~~~~ This season of Unpacking Israeli History is generously sponsored by Marci & Andrew Spitzer and Barbara Sommer & Alan Fisher, and this episode is generously sponsored by the Center For Advancement of Jewish Education, and The Jewish Federation of Northern NJ. ~~~~ Bibliography: Alston, Adam Eley and Katie. “The Ex-CIA Agent Who Interrogated Saddam Hussein.” BBC News, BBC, 4 Jan. 2017, https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38497767. “Saddam Hussein -- Iraq's 'President for Life'.” The Christian Science Monitor, The Christian Science Monitor, 26 Aug. 1981, https://www.csmonitor.com/1981/0826/082659.html. “Before The Revolution | Trailer.” YouTube, uploaded by Journeyman Pictures, 9 March 2016, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMrmK2VGmmg&ab_channel=JourneymanPictures. “Persian Gulf.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/place/Persian-Gulf. “Saddam Hussein.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saddam-Hussein.
