Had a wonderful podcast today with Sarah Webber. I've known Sarah for over 20 years and she's a very interesting person. Sarah brings a unique perspective to the podcast because she's an individual who's not only been an artist for over 20 years, but was in art sales, working for various art galleries. As a result, she has this component that allows her to look at the world that she inhabits (which is as an artist) but from a different viewpoint that involves the business chops that are required to succeed. As I mentioned, this is a very unique podcast featuring a wonderful voice in the world of art. I really had a great time with this interview. Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 243, with Sarah Webber.
This week we continue the AmphibiCast Artist Series with Laura Airey Le. Laura works with colored pencil to create stunning drawings of a myriad of species including arachnids, reptiles, and dart frogs.

When “kitsch” was first considered by art critics and historians, the prevalent view was that gaudy roadside attractions were good for a laugh and a bit of banal gratification thanks to sentimentality. Motoring visitors to the Pacific Northwest, however, are inclined to perceive such icons as a quirky welcome to the neighborhood. Harriet Baskas shares her appreciation of these beckoning behemoths.

Erik Abel is an artist, surfer, and world traveler. He lives in Southern Oregon, an area I know quite well because my mom and her family are from there. Before settling in Ashland, Oregon with his family, Erik surfed and traveled all over the South Pacific. Always sketching, he worked to develop his own unique style, which includes images of ocean waves, nature, animals, and abstract figures. Erik paints with acrylic on boards, and enhances his art with pencils and paint pens. He shows his art in galleries, but he has also completed many commission pieces, sometimes for surfing events. He recently added a large detached studio behind his house, and he's working to get it filled and see how it helps his art business. Claudia talks to Jeffrey Bussolini, a phenomenologist with a keen interest in feline experiences, about how art and aesthetics can provide a novel way of exploring and reconceptualising animals' experiences. Date recorded: 16 September 2020 Jeffrey Bussolini is Co-Director of the Center for Feline Studies and the Avenue B Multi-Studies Center, and associate professor at the City University of New York. He studied at Georgetown University, CUNY, the Sorbonne (Paris 1), and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Since 1995 he and colleagues have researched the phenomenological dimensions of feline and human interaction, focusing especially on the spatial, ethological, and social dimensions of feline-feline and feline-human relationships. Among the topics they have pursued are dualist versus monist conceptual foundations for phenomenological accounts, the surprising practice of cats eating chile peppers, and cats as artists and artmakers. In 2016 he and others curated the first exhibition of cat produced artworks at New York City gallery Adjacent to Life. Part one was so well received, we thought we'd better dish out part 2 pretty swiftly for you! Huge thanks goes out to Lisa Ann Watkins of Animal Art by LAW for giving up her valuable time to chat with us, it was great fun all round and interesting to have an insight into a successful artists lifestyle. And of course, you must listen to the end, just to hear Jills story about her Arun jumper, honestly - it's pure gold! We also totally lose it today when we get in-depth about inner voices, you'll have to listen to find out what poor Bob Ross and his evil brother Dick have to do with all of that! Next week we'll be back to our normal format of talking nonsense with some helpful, factual stuff thrown in for good measure, plus we'll also be doing our usual recommendations too. We thoroughly enjoyed doing this interview and already have a few more in the pipeline. We'd be ever so grateful if you could leave us a review, and don't forget to share the podcast with your arty peers and join us over on the Life and Pencils Community on Facebook.
In this episode I got to interview Darcy Walker, the artist behind Darcy Walker Art. This is a special episode because she is the first guest that is a family member. This goes right into the message of inspiration being all around us...even on our own family trees.Darcy not only paints the art herself but for a number of years she has been teaching as well as participating in community art shows. The folks she teaches range from all age groups; she does group classes and also private lessons too. Her home is her studio and I got to see all the behind the scenes action that goes into her art work, and the business behind it as well.It was exciting to learn everything that she was doing and how she is growing her business; she takes us back to how it all started coming out of college and evolved with raising a family. Today a great conversation with Michael, Theresa and Hetty Baiz. Hetty Baiz is an artist. Hetty Baiz adds a new voice to Singer’s writings about animal ethics with her large-scale collages of animals raised for food or laboratory testing. She views the mistreatment of animals raised on an industrial scale as part of the larger picture of a degrading planet. The artist first developed a connection to plants, trees, water, insects and animals as a child, summering at her family cottage in Pennsylvania. During more recent visits, observing hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the region, she sought to express her angst and caring through animal collages – a project she had already begun, with rhinoceros, elephants, iguana and others. Baiz thought about how integral animals are to the environment. Animals are the very embodiment of nature, and yet man’s activities often lead to their extinction. She read Singer’s book and felt called to action.
