On this episode Juliet is in conversation with Swedish wildlife artist Per Ekros.  Always fascinated by faces, expressions and bodies, animals are an intrinsic part of Per Ekros's life, and they form naturally and intuitively as the subject matter of his artworks. His heart lies within the animal kingdom and our consumption of their environments, which impacts him deeply and the psychology of this is a reflection of this. The podcast discusses his series of polar bear portraits from the 2021 series The King without a Kingdom and how Per captures emotional response through his selection of material and media.  His approach to a reductive painting style enables the characterisation of his chosen animal to be simplified within the composition which  provides an emotional intensity in his painting. Current works from the To The Ark series are exhibited at the Nordic Art Agency gallery during the Summer Exhibition and a solo exhibition of Per Ekros's painting will be held in the gallery from September 21st - November 16th 2024.

Sarah brings a unique perspective to the podcast because she's an individual who's not only been an artist for over 20 years, but was in art sales, working for various art galleries. As a result, she has this component that allows her to look at the world that she inhabits (which is as an artist) but from a different viewpoint that involves the business chops that are required to succeed. As I mentioned, this is a very unique podcast featuring a wonderful voice in the world of art. He's just a unique human being and a joy to get to talk to and to get to know. He spent most of his career in the illustration world doing all sorts of things, working for Hallmark for four years, going to Hollywood and working there for 20 years, and doing some amazing movie posters. You name it, he probably did it in L.A. in terms of advertising for big-time companies, whether it's Coca-Cola or Anheuser-Busch, Ezra worked across the entire illustration world. Then we get to where we are today. This is a two-part podcast and the second part is about how he reinvented himself basically around 2001 and goes into what he had been interested in doing for years - which is fine art. That whole journey was a treat to hear about, as well as Ezra's efforts to bring to light the African American involvement in Western cowboy culture. It's huge and it gets breezed over so easily but Ezra's efforts have not been in vain. It's an incredibly important part of who we are, of the West, and how the West was built. It was a wonderful podcast and I enjoyed every moment of it. Twelve years of work attempting to find common ground between developers and conservationists in southwest Florida goes down the drain because the developers cheaped out.Our gest this week is Moni Basu who visited the Spiritualist community in Cassadaga and wrote about her experience for Flamingo Magazine. What Basu found differs greatly from advertisements popularizing Cassadaga as the "Psychic Capital of the World."Now is the time to visit the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art in St. Pete to see it's latest temporary exhibition, "Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West." On view through January 8, 2023, "Black Pioneers" explores the path of Black history in the West with a timeline of original pictorial quilts. The timeline begins in 1528, which marks the arrival of Africans in the American West, and continues through the Civil Rights Movement. Dispelling the myth that Black people in the old West were mostly cowboys, the exhibition shows rich diversity in their occupations and achievements in society, religion, education, and the arts. Choosing quilts as the visual medium for this exhibition accentuates the intersections of African Americans in the Western Frontier while informing others about the art form and its important role in African American history."Welcome to Florida" is also presented by Windstormproducts.com, a Florida company which has grown to become the largest online supplier of hurricane hardware in the world. Eventually, she found her way into America and started painting Western art, which was a thing she didn't even know existed. Fast forward to today and she's one of the top artists in America painting wildlife and western figurative realism. She's done Native American subjects as well as cowboy subjects and is in more than 25 museum collections. It's just really fun to just hear how somebody from a little town in Australia can have a dream that a lot of us in the art world have/ had and pursue it so successfully. That's a big deal, right? To leave your country,  leave your family and friends,  follow your dream, and find success and security from your passion.Krystii will tell you her motto is: "How hard could it be?" Julie came to the Hoffman Process to heal her fear that there was something terribly wrong with her. As a member of YPO, she discovered many other YPO members had also completed the Process so she thought she'd give it a try. But, Julie really wasn't sure what she was getting into. Her biggest fear was that she'd have to share her feelings and deepest secret with everyone else - her fear of unlovability. Once at the Process, Julie experienced a huge revelation. She shares: "I have wasted so much time dying for people to love me and they don't even know me." The grief of this made her feel physically sick. She realized that all the things she was doing to keep herself safe were really only keeping her small. The healing of this very human fear of unlovability is one of the profound outcomes of doing the Hoffman Process. After both Julie and her husband completed the Process, they hosted a reunion to bring their two Process classes together. Years later, they are still hosting this reunion. It has grown to include many other Process graduates who want the Hoffman connection. For someone who never felt she belonged, Julie now celebrates the "incredible fraternity of people" she calls her Hoffman family. In this week's episode of the Jackson Hole Connection, Stephan visits with Dick Scarlett. Dick is a father, husband, grandfather, veteran, entrepreneur, author, banker and a community leader. Dick grew up on a ranch in Wyoming, graduated from University of Wyoming and moved to Jackson in 1981. Stephan and Dick talk about why communication is so important and why a bank needs to be a community partner and not just a lending institution. Dick founded the United Bancorporation and helped grow the Jackson State Bank into the largest bank in Wyoming until it was sold in 2008 to Wells Fargo. Dick and Jackson State Bank helped develop Jackson into what it is today, including the creation of the Aspens and supported the founding of The National Museum of Wildlife Art. Dick & Maggie Scarlett along with Charlie Craighead published a book titled ‘Sagebrush to Silver Dollar', the history of Jackson State Bank. You can find a copy at https://store.jacksonholehistory.org/collections/jackson-hole/products/sagebrush-to-silver-dollar (Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum) or at http://www.valleybookstore.com/ (Valley Bookstore). Love Maine Radio with Dr. Lisa Belisle

Rachel Walls is the owner of the gallery Rachel Walls Fine Art, located in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. The gallery is currently exhibiting the artwork of Dahlov Ipcar and Walls is also organizing exhibitions at the University of Cincinnati and Bates College, which will open this summer. Walls, who grew up in Cape Elizabeth, first encountered Ipcar as a child when the artist came to Pond Cove Elementary School through a visiting artists program. A skiing accident in 2010 brought Ipcar into Walls’ life again. She was seriously injured and had to re-learn to speak and write. When one of her doctors suggested looking at children’s books, she gravitated to the Dahlov Ipcar books she had loved as a child. And after much work, Walls regained her speech and writing skills, all the while never losing her interest in creativity and visual beauty. By 2015, Walls was representing Ipcar professionally and the plan to exhibit her personal collection was well underway when the artist passed away in February 2018 at the age of 99. Walls, who graduated from Bates College, began her career at the National Museum of Wildlife Art before becoming the director of exhibitions and design conferences at Western Interiors and Design magazine. After leaving the magazine, she executed the development of educational programming for the American Institute of Architects and the Town of Portola Valley, California using the first LEED Platinum Civic Center in the Untied States as a case study for architects as more efficient municipal centers began to be realized in 2008. She has curated design exhibitions for the U.S. Green Building Council, West Coast Green, and the Urban Land Institute featuring sustainably produced, non-toxic home furnishings and home building systems. Most recently, she curated fine art exhibitions featuring Marguerite Zorach, Ipcar and William Zorach at Samson Projects in Boston from June to August 2015; Ipcar at Frost Gully Gallery in Freeport from November 2015 to January 2016, and Ipcar: Stories at the Portland Public Library in Portland from October to December 2017. https://www.themainemag.com/radio/radio-guests/rachel-walls/
