Another October, another sad ending for Philadelphia Sports fans. BUT. We were given a sweet consolation on 10/18 when Netflix released a short documentary - "The Turnaround." This 25 minute film, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, digs deeper into the story of the man who inspired the country's most notoriously brutal sports fans to pick someone up when they were down. Rachael & Elizabeth shared this story last October and think that you should both give this episode a re-listen, and check out The Turnaround on Netflix so that you can revel in and respond to the power of kindness and compassion.
Tek & Prem welcome Coggin of Crossing Broad on the VetLine for the Phils 2024 eulogy. Another October ends without a parade down Broad Street, as the bats go silent, the bullpen collapses, and a division-rival dismisses them in 4 games. Many questions about this team abound, the makeup of the guys, the mental toughness and ability to perform when lights are brightest. Only a handful of Phils came to play and the rest of the team was essentially a shell of their regular season form, a form which saw the team win 95 games, the 6th-most in a single season in franchise history. The Eagles host the woeful Browns off the bye week and are fully healthy after the layoff. Jalen Hurts has many doubters to prove wrong and it remains to be seen if he will. The defense needs to produce pressure and there is no better time to start than against one of the worst offenses in football thus far. Historically, Cleveland holds a 14-10 record in Philly, but have dropped 5 of the last 6 games against the Birds overall. Next, on the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attacks against Israel, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt talks about the rise in antisemitism in the past year and how to honor the lives lost. Dr. Thomas Sheahen and Dr. Stacy Trasancos present on How Science and Theology Read One Another (October 29, 2022)Pope St. John Paul II began his famous encyclical, “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth.” Dr. Thomas P. Sheahen, with a Ph.D. degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, examines truth from the wing of science. Scientists depend on empirical data for conclusions. Dr. Stacy A. Trasancos, with a Ph.D. in chemistry and M.A. in dogmatic theology, explains how we find truth from the wing of faith. Theologians derive formulations from divine revelation. Most hunters dream of filling a tag on a great deer during the season, let alone two within the first 2 weeks of the season. Rick Kiely of New York did just that. Rick hunts a combination of small parcel and public land. This October he had the magic touch taking two great bucks while going against the grain and hunting mornings, and resisting the urge to hunt old familiar places. He broke out of his comfort zone and changed his game this summer seeking new stand locations and was rewarded. If the two bucks weren't enough, his instagram feed is full of videos of shooters he filmed on stand after tagging out! To listen to the podcast click the orange play button at the top of the page.
