There are a lot of things that attract young farmers into the industry. Heritage, new technology, philosophy on food and food production. All those things have kept Anthony Panke engaged. He's the vice president of Family Farm Defenders, an organization that focuses on food sovereignty and keeping small farms viable. Panke grew up on a farm in Fond du Lac County, but today he's teaching at a university in San Francisco. Why does he still come "home" and focus on farm policy? He explains to Pam Jahnke. Weather gives us a break for the weekend, but there's moisture on the way. Stu Muck explains. Wisconsin's detected another case of high pathogen avian influenza in Barron County. Dr. Darlene Konkel, WI State Veterinarian, explains how they monitor the area and update livestock owners. Sen. Joan Ballweg is cleaning out her office at the state capitol. Ballweg, who's been a part of the state legislature since 2004, is leaving behind quite the "to do" list for the next session. She shares that list with Pam Jahnke. The rural voice is really going to matter this election year - and that influence will ripple beyond the presidential decision.  David Bowen, Associate State Director of Advocacy for AARP of Wisconsin is busy now making sure candidates understand where priorities lie. Bowen says big bullet items they want all Wisconsinites discussing with candidates include social security and maintaining its funding.  Bowen says other elements of conversation include services like high speed broadband in rural communities. Bowen notes that the latest polls only accent how important rural voices and their interaction with candidates will be in fall election outcomes.AARP Wisconsin is seeking legislative volunteers to help educate lawmakers, candidates, opinion leaders and the public about its priorities, including support for family caregivers.Volunteers are needed throughout the state, but particularly in southeastern and southwestern Wisconsin. Activities include sending emails to legislators, writing letters to the editor, making phone calls and attending hearings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This year we're back with new hosts, new topics, and awesome guests! Listen to host Chasity Shaw, RN, BSN, MSN and Blake Hutson, an Associate State Director at AARP, discuss what it would mean for APRNs in Texas to have full practice authority in Texas. APRNs can practice to the full extent of their education and training only when they contract with a physician to “supervise” their practice. Meanwhile, research shows that expanding practice freedoms could increase access for patients and lower care costs. Where does that leave Texas nurses - and their patients? Listen to AARP's Reggie Nance, Associate State Director for Multicultural Outreach, as he talks record utility bills, record drug prices and more with host Danny Tisdale, on The Danny Tisdale Show.Reggie Nance, AARP Associate State Director for Multicultural Outreach, to talk to us about the fact that Harlem residents pay some of the highest utility bills in the nation, yet unlike most states, New York lacks an independent utility consumer advocate with the power to challenge unfair rate hikes in court. Americans already pay the highest brand-name drug prices in the world – prices that ballooned four times the rate of inflation from 2006 to 2017. Nationally, 46% of African Americans did not fill a prescription, according to an AARP study. The Canadian government estimates that U.S. consumers pay twice as much as Canadians for patented prescription drugs and 20 percent more for generics – and in some cases drugs sell for 10 times as much in the United States than in Canada. Consumers are forced to wait an average of 17 months for cheaper generics because of “pay to delay” deals, and health plans can increase drug costs in the middle of a contract year. Utility consumers and New Yorkers who rely on prescription medications need relief!Check out our post-Harlem AARP Members Head To Albany To Fight Rx Costs And Help Utility Consumers.SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for more videos: www.youtube.com/harlemworldmagazine.comwww.facebook.com/harlemworldmagazine.comwww.harlemworldmagazine.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/theharlemworldmagazinepodcast)
