Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Can AI power the Global Mapping and Quantification of Animal Suffering? The Pain Atlas Project, published by Wladimir J. Alonso on June 26, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This article examines how AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), could soon enable tackling the enormous challenge of systematically quantifying the main sources of suffering across humans and animals. Two years ago, a post by James Özden and Neil Dullaghan in this forum, on Megaprojects for Animals, highlighted the significant gap in the evidence base to inform effective strategies for animal welfare. They estimated a growth rate of research to inform the animal welfare evidence base lower than 1% of the growth rate seen in global health. We argue that leveraging AI offers a promising solution to address this gap. Drawing inspiration on the success of AlphaFold in rapidly advancing the field of molecular biology, AI can similarly revolutionize the mapping and quantification of animal suffering, providing the much needed evidence to inform and optimize animal welfare interventions, policies and decision-making in general. Because it channels existing knowledge and scientific evidence in a systematic way to inform estimates of animal suffering, the Welfare Footprint Framework (WFF) is an analytical approach especially well-suited to make use of AI's capabilities. Providing a glimpse of what might be possible in the near future with the use of AI, we introduce the Pain-Track AI Tool. This tool is designed to describe and quantify negative affective experiences in animals, offering a starting point for the description and quantification of any source of suffering. Building on this foundation, we also introduce the Pain Atlas Project, envisaged as a large-scale initiative aimed at comprehensively mapping and quantifying the primary sources of human and animal suffering. This project, which we anticipate could have an impact in terms of knowledge advancement comparable to AlphaFold's achievements in molecular biology, foresees three core components: Mapping of Suffering: a comprehensive analysis of the primary source of suffering endured by different species throughout their lives. Quantification of Suffering: using the Cumulative Pain metric to estimate the magnitude of suffering associated with each of the sources of suffering identified. Visualization of Suffering: use of visualization tools to construct a detailed and global landscape of suffering across species and living conditions, guiding decision-making and intervention strategies. The description of the AI tool and Pain Atlas Project is available here. We invite everyone to provide feedback in this forum and discuss potential collaborations (feel free to also reach out to us at AI@welfarefootprint.org). Thanks for listening. Episode #21 of the Ground Shots Podcast This episode of the Ground Shots Podcast features a conversation with Alicia Toldi, who currently lived in Oakland, California. Alicia co-runs Piney Wood Atlas. According to their website: "Piney Wood Atlas is a collaborative project between citizen artists Alicia Toldi and Carolina Porras and was formed out of a desire to help spread the word about the magical world of artist residencies. Through a series of regional road trips, we travel across the country unearthing small, emerging and unconventional artist residencies. Visiting is essential in absorbing the atmosphere, embedding into the space as if we were residents ourselves. We share meals, conversations and experiences with facilitators and artists. So far, we have visited around 45 residencies across 15 states and plan to visit the whole country in the next two years, representing alternative residencies through annually printed regional guidebooks, online content, and workshops. Alternative residencies offer individual character, personalized experiences and room to experiment. Featuring these kinds of spaces allows us to connect creative thinkers with places where they can become visionaries, unlocking fresh ideas that only come from being in a new environment, and thus engaging in a symbiotic relationship between the artist, the residency locale and the outside world. Piney Wood Atlas' intention is to bridge the gap between residency databases and word-of-mouth, ensuring that attending a residency is an attainable, productive, and fun adventure for all." We did this interview in Alicia's art studio in Oakland, California this past Spring after we both completed a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) at the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center in Occidental, California. I first met Alicia when I stumbled upon Piney Wood Atlas online. We have communicated online about the project over the past couple years and both decided to sign up for the Spring PDC at OAEC without realizing the other had also. It was a sweet surprise to finally meet Alicia. She hosted me a bunch this Spring as I came through the Bay area for interviews and meet-ups with folks. I appreciated being welcomed by Alicia and her partner and able to fit my big truck camper home in her tiny driveway by the freeway in the heart of Oakland. In this conversation with Alicia, we talk about: a little bit of the story of how Alicia co-found Piney Wood Atlas the nature of artist residencies and how they can be designed in many ways, including their ability to be accessible to everyone some of Alicia's favorite residencies featured in the PWA zines. So far the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest zines are out, and the Midwest themed zine will be out soon adventures in road-tripping for the PWA project Alicia's personal story of living in different places as an artist on the east and west coasts, and coming back home to the Bay area a few of our post-permaculture training reflections Alicia's relationship with spoon carving and making things We're giving away one copy of the Piney Woods Atlas 'Southwest' zine to a Ground Shots Project Patreon subscriber. The real world is complex. It is changing very fast. So the optimal solution probably doesn't exist. If it does exist, it doesn't stay the optimal solution for long. To the extent that Artificial Intelligence focuses our choices and behaviors on the optimal solution, we're in trouble. If we put too much pressure on the algorithms to only make optimal selections, then we're going to end up with very fragile systems that lack diversity. There are already some big examples of this. Look at the US political system. You have Republicans who are being shown the best social media messages, the optimal messages, that will make them click or tap. You have Democrats who are being shown the best social media messages, the optimal messages, that will make them click. Result? A more fragile public sphere. These two forces live in tension with each other. Mixing is inefficient if you are trying to optimize the number of clicks. But put too much pressure on Mixing up our usual patterns, and that's not helpful, either. (If every day my news feed shows me a random collection of stories, it's very hard to learn. My world becomes chaotic.) But there's a zone in between these two extremes, where the power to select what fits our pattern and the power to see our pattern and break it up, balance each other out. And we know that zone exists. Because_ Mixing and _Selecting, these two forces, are the same forces responsible for natural evolution. They are the forces that made us, in nature. http://kutarna.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/evolution.jpeg If we can build algorithms that can help us find that zone, faster, more often, in business and society…wow. We would accelerate the evolution of human technology and culture and society. This is the zone in which evolution happens. In which learning happens. In which innovation happens. In which we develop resilience to systemic shocks, like climate change, or fake news, or a sudden swing in consumer demand for our product. If you can see this picture of AI, then you start to see all the mistakes people and businesses are making with AI today. All the opportunities being missed. And you can communicate a powerful vision for the positive role that AI can play in getting us all to a different, more beautiful, more advanced world. Faster. We talk about all this and more in this episode of The Atlas Project. Our conversation was inspired by Chris's most recent newsletter. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have started an ambitious project to build a brain atlas. According to neuroscientist John Ngai, the goal is to create a catalogue of different brain cells. "The human brain contains about 80 billion neurons, nerve cells. And of the neurons we suspect there could be hundreds, if not thousands of types of distinct types of those cells, but until recently we really haven’t had a way of categorizing or classifying those cells in a quantitative or rational way." But why do researchers need this mapping tool? "In order to understand how the brain processes information and gives raise to things like cognition, emotion, we really need to know what different parts are." Ngai also hopes this atlas will help scientists understand brain cells’ connections well enough to launch new therapies for treating cognitive and neurological diseases.
