Take a deep breath. Half the oxygen you just inhaled came from one place, the ocean. But right now, that invisible life support system is sending distress signals. Warmer waters. Emptying nets. Coastlines that no longer look familiar. This World Oceans Day, we explore what happens when the thing we've taken for granted begins to shift and how we can rise to meet that challenge. Am 8. Juni ist World Oceans Day. (superfly.fm)
As we mark World Oceans Day today Coral Triangle Day in June, it's worth remembering that Malaysia sits within one of the most biodiverse marine regions on Earth. Our waters are home to coral reefs, seagrass meadows, sea turtles, sharks, and countless other species that support fisheries, tourism, livelihoods, and coastal communities. But a new report suggests that many of these ecologically important areas overlap with active and proposed offshore oil and gas development. Produced by RimbaWatch with technical contributions from SkyTruth and support from the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development, the report titled Reefs at Risk: Mapping Fossil Fuel Threats to Sensitive Marine Environments in Malaysia, presents the first comprehensive mapping of how Malaysia's offshore fossil fuel industry intersects with what it calls Sensitive Marine Environments. To discuss the findings and what they could mean for marine conservation, governance, and the energy transition, we're joined by Adam Farhan, Co-Founder and Director of RimbaWatch, and Angelina Dacanay, Southeast Asia Energy Transition Lead at the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED).Image Credit: Inside Climate NewsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois tackle the latest headlines shaping Canada's food and retail landscape before welcoming back a dynamic entrepreneur reshaping the seafood category. The conversation begins with a heated national debate: should Canada eliminate the Temporary Foreign Worker Program? Sylvain outlines the program's critical role in agriculture, agri-food processing, and restaurants, weighing the Conservative proposal to phase it out against industry concerns. He highlights the tension between labour shortages in rural communities and youth unemployment, noting how food service has become “addicted” to low-wage labour. Michael points to staggering statistics—40,000 people applied for seasonal jobs at the Canadian National Exhibition—illustrating the urgency of balancing wages, job availability, and immigration. From labour, the hosts turn to politics and trade. They unpack Quebec's cabinet shuffle and the departure of one of the province's longest-serving agriculture ministers, praising his role in championing Canada's Grocery Code of Conduct. Sylvain also reveals how Cody Blois, now Secretary of State to Agriculture in the Prime Minister's Office, may wield more influence over ag policy than the minister himself. There's cautious optimism with both China and India as Canada reopens diplomatic channels, while debates over canola's contribution to GDP spark discussion about food security, branding, and farmer uncertainty. The news segment also dives into consumer behaviour trends: Tim Hortons' launch of a protein-fortified latte (with Starbucks poised to follow), the surging popularity of food delivery apps despite their impact on food literacy and household budgets, and the mixed fortunes of Canadian farmers—livestock producers are enjoying high returns, while grain and dairy producers face challenges. Finally, Michael and Sylvain discuss Cracker Barrel's failed brand refresh, underlining the importance of innovation that resonates with consumers. The second half features a spirited interview with Charlotte Langley, Founder of Nice Cans and CEO of Langley Foods. A chef, ocean steward, and veteran food entrepreneur, Charlotte shares how her cheekily named canned seafood brand is making sustainability delicious. She explains how pushing for MSC certification in Portugal helped transform the entire sardine fishery, elevating sustainability standards across 21 operations. Charlotte also details her collaborations—like a World Oceans Day partnership with Cheekbone Beauty—and the creative process behind launching new products that are both innovative and scalable.Special listener discount: Use code DELISHFISH for 20% off

June 8th was World Oceans Day, and if you listen to this podcast, you know this is a day I am very much here for - because I am obsessed with the ocean… for good reason. But rather than going on about it myself, for this episode I thought we could celebrate World Oceans Day with the help of another ocean obsessive: Melissa Cristina Márquez.Melissa is a marine science education expert based in Australia, and is known as "the most enthusiastic shark scientist" people ever meet. Her work has been featured in Science, NPR, Vogue, Allure, InStyle, GQ, Seeker, Popular Science, and showcased on Disney+, BBC, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Acciona, and Good Morning America. As well as being a scientist and educator, Melissa is also an author of children's books including the Wild Survival series (Scholastic) and Mother of Sharks (Madre de los Tiburones), with her latest, Sea of Constellations (Océano de Constelaciones). In this episode, she shares:Her background and how she got to be on the Discovery ChannelWhy we need diversity in scienceThe integration of Indigenous science into Western science - and how it worksHow to tackle constant misinformationHer favourite thing about sharksHow to stay hopeful during a bleak time in the ocean worldThe importance of ocean education and being a steward of natureThe importance of interacting with nature from a young ageKey Quotes“If we're going to coexist with nature again - how we used to - we need to be a part of nature again, instead of apart from it.”“Science, in order to be effective and actually benefit people, needs to serve the people it's trying to benefit.”Find our full podcast via the website here: https://www.nowthatswhaticall.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nowthatswhaticallgreen/You can follow me on socials on the below accounts.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/briannemwest/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@briannemwestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briannemwest/For our latest big project, find out more about Incrediballs here: https://incrediballs.com/

In this episode of The Science of Fishing, host Mark Farag is joined by Ozzy Delgado, co-founder of the Billfish Conservation Project, to discuss the urgent challenges of billfish conservation, overfishing, and the future of sustainable fishing. They dive into the science behind billfish migration, the impact of bycatch on marlin and sailfish populations, and why protecting these apex predators is critical to maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems. Ozzy shares field experience, real-world conservation strategies, and how the Billfish Conservation Project is making a difference through science, advocacy, and community-driven action. This special episode celebrates World Oceans Day 2025—a global call to protect our blue planet through awareness and action.
In this special edition for World Oceans Day, we spotlight the urgent, haunting work of Mandy Barker, the award-winning British photographic artist using sea-salvaged fashion waste to expose the truth about plastic pollution. Her cyanotype series "Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Imperfections" reimagines the work of 19th-century botanist Anna Atkins, replacing seaweed with clothing scraps collected from 121 beaches around the UK. The result is both poetic and jarring, earning praise from none other than Sir David Attenborough, who supports Barker's work for its power to inspire real change.
Each year on June 8th we celebrate World Ocean Day to recognize our relationship with the ocean, the vast watery world that covers 71% of our planet. Despite gains in ocean education and increased awareness and importance of the Ocean Literacy movement, public awareness of ocean issues in the United States does not advance much over time. What does it take for the will of the people to coalesce around a single issue, to be informed and changed into a voice for change, not just on World Ocean Day, but every day?About World Ocean Radio World Ocean Radio is a weekly series of five-minute audio essays available for syndicated use at no cost by college and community radio stations worldwide. Sharks and dugongs serve as barometers of the marine ecosystem, but many people overlook their critical roles, perceiving sharks as menacing figures and dugongs as mythical creatures.Ahead of World Oceans Day on 8 June, UN News's Jing Zhang spoke with Gabriel Grimsditch, a programme management officer at the UN Environment Programme's marine and coastal ecosystem unit based in Nairobi, Kenya. In this exclusive interview, Mr. Grimsditch delved deep into the fascinating world beneath the waves, shedding light on the importance of these often misunderstood creatures in maintaining the health and balance of our oceans.
One of WCS's priorities is protecting an underwater marvel off the coast of New York and New Jersey. Along the way, the goal is to deepen the connection of the more than 28 million local residents to our treasured ocean resources. There are a number of voices contributing to the effort, including young people. Reporting: Dan RosenGuests: Leslieann Peers-Roman, Brynn HellerToday's World Oceans Day episode of WCS Wild Audio is brought to you by our partners at Armitron. Armitron aims to bring awareness and inspire action to help protect marine ecosystems around the world, particularly as it pertains to single-use plastics. Armitron's ocean plastic watches, the Wave and Reef Collections, are crafted from recycled ocean-bound plastic, blending eco-consciousness with impeccable design.
Today it is all about World Oceans Day (8th June). They are the life blood of our planet, but they are under incredibly serious threat. For this episode I'm going to be blunt and maybe a little bit depressing, at least to start with. Our oceans face multiple threats and there is already catastrophic damage being done to them. Don't worry, in this episode I'll also offer some hope and some options on how to help, but to start I'm really going to reveal how dire things are. In this episode I share: - Why less than 10% of coral reefs are going to survive global warming - Why coral reefs are so important for our continued survival - The horrifying mass bleaching event we are experiencing right now - What ocean acidification is and why it is life threatening for a lot of ocean life - Why plastics in the oceans are actually getting worse - What dead zones are and why it's horrifying - The 30 by 30 campaign and why it's important - The disappointing amount of oceans that Aotearoa is protecting - The ways we can make change to help our oceans Key Quotes “At the end of the day if the ocean fails, we do too, end of story.” “Climate change is not something that is going to happen, it is happening now.” “You may like them, but our oceans cannot cope with people liking fish.” “They cannot do studies on how microplastics are affecting humans, because they cannot find a control population. Which means they cannot find any human that has not been affected by microplastics.” “We're doing a bloody poor job of looking after our oceans.” You can get involved with the podcast online Find our full podcast plus our sister podcast via the website here: https://www.nowthatswhaticall.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nowthatswhaticallpodcasts/ You can follow me on socials on the below accounts. By Selva Ozelli SNPIT is a groundbreaking snap-to-earn blockchain platform that allows photographers to monetize their photography by creating NFT's and selling them. Developed by Gallusys and published by Zeal Nova, SNPIT has garnered significant attention and success in Japan. SNPIT a blockchain solution for photography SNPIT taps into the contemporary habit of frequent photography by allowing photographers to earn rewards for their work by creating NFTs. Tokenizing photography is the practice of creating and selling unique digital editions of photographs as NFTs on blockchain platforms like SNPIT. These NFTs can include anything from fine art prints to press photos, to photos of art work and they are often accompanied by exclusive content like videos or audio recordings. A photographic NFT is more than just an expensive jpeg or a digital license allowing a collector to share photographer's art freely. It is a digital asset and photographer's proof of provenance traceable to the photographer at its origin on the blockchain. Since its beta launch in September 2023 after the NFT market boom, the SNPIT platform has garnered immense attention. Within a mere 21 hours, SNPIT completely sold out its collection of 10,000 Camera NFTs priced at 150 $MATIC each. In the US, on June 5 and then again on November 20, 2023, the Securities Exchange Commission ("SEC') named Polygon's $MATIC as an 'unregistered security' involved in the digital asset trading on the Binance and Kraken crypto exchanges. Since then, CoinMarketCap's data revealed that $MATIC's price dropped considerably. This swift sell-out of NFTs in exchange for $MATIC in Japan, underscores the platform's rising popularity and the considerable interest in its unique features. SNIPIT is now expanding globally to introduce its innovative features to new markets focusing on Korea, MENA, and English-speaking regions Website hopefully with regulatory compliance in each new jurisdiction as the company expands globally following the tokenized collectibles trend. Toshiyuki Otsuka, the visionary CEO and founder of SNPIT, explained "SNPIT transcends being just an app; it's a movement empowering users to transform everyday moments into valuable assets. Our successful debut in Japan validates our vision, and we are excited to introduce SNPIT to a global audience. We firmly believe that our innovative blend of lifestyle and GameFi, powered by DePIN technology, will resonate with users worldwide, and we remain committed to expanding our influence." Strategic partnerships have been instrumental in enhancing SNPIT's visibility and attracting a diverse user base. Recently, SNPIT has launched the "World Repository," a photo database leveraging DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) technology, allowing users to upload photos with precise timestamps and location data. The "World Repository" aims to revolutionize how we document, share, and use visual data, fostering a more connected and informed world by enhancing map services with detailed area information. By inviting global contributions, the "World Repository" securely stores and makes these photos accessible worldwide. The database supports various applications, including cultural heritage restoration, metaverse content creation, environmental conservation, and generative AI training. For example, photographers could celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with theme of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience by uploading their photos of the desert from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the World Repository. Or photographers can celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8th, hosted in-person at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcast digitally live worldwide with a theme Awaken New Depths by uploading photos from the UNESCO OCEAN DECADE TIDES OF CHANGE WAVES OF HOPE ART SHOW hosted by Art on the Ave NYC at Fulton Center of art work of artists: Alfons Rodriguez (Melting A...

Just in time to celebrate World Oceans Day, let's dive into this fan favorite: Are plastic straws really that bad? Why is the sea salty? How do currents work? Do you have to be a marine biologist to help save the ocean? (Spoiler: No!) In a conversation with ocean and policy expert Dr. Ayana Johnson, Alie finds a balance between the wonders and the bummers. First, we learn weird ocean trivia, why we love the sea, and facts about the ocean's depths and beauty. Then, we get to the sad stuff: ocean health, climate change, acidification, pollution, policy and what we can all do.If you've been feeling helpless, this episode gives you all the tools you need to understand and help our friend, the World Ocean.Dr. Johnson's website, X and InstagramBuy her book All We Can SaveCheck out her podcast How to Save a PlanetA donation went to UrbanOceanLab.orgFull-length (*not* G-rated) Oceanology episode + tons of science linksSubscribe to SmologiesBecome a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, masks, totes!Follow @Ologies on X and InstagramFollow @AlieWard on X and InstagramSound editing by Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio Productions and Steven Ray MorrisSmologies theme song by Harold Malcolm

In today's episode I'm speaking with Titouan Bernicot, the founder & CEO of Coral Gardeners. He grew up on a pearl farm in French Polynesia, in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. Whenever I'm on a call with him I'm convinced he's using one of those fake beach backgrounds but then remember it's actually a real backdrop. We even got interrupted by dolphins swimming past the Coral Gardeners headquarters while recording this conversation…Titouan says that coral reefs gave him everything in his life, from the waves he surfs to the food he eats and the oxygen he breathes. So in 2017, at only 18 years old, he started Coral Gardeners to restore the reefs and plant corals. Together with his team he has already planted over 100,000 corals in French Polynesia and they have set the goal for themselves to plant one MILLION corals by 2025, all around the world.I met him at the World Oceans Day event in New York last year and was so impressed by his positive energy and contagious hope. He knows what's at stake but rather than letting the state of the world get him down, he turns this into meaningful action, getting people and organisations such as Rolex, Prada, Warner Bros and many more from all around the globe to join the movement and help restore healthy ocean ecosystems.Want to dive deeper?Adopt a coral - https://coralgardeners.org/products/adopt-a-coralFollow Coral Gardeners on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/coralgardenersCome say hi!Titouan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/toutiess/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. Dr. Julie Pullen is founding partner and chief scientist at Propeller, an early-stage venture fund focused on the intersection of the oceans and climate change. It recently announced that it had raised $100 million for its first fund. Coincidently, today (June 8) is also World Oceans Day, globally recognized by the UN as a day to foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.Today's conversation is about the ocean, its critical role in regulating our climate, how humans have been damaging this balance, and what we can do about it. Julie's work is at the intersection of humanity and the oceans, and her expertise spans climate, weather, and hydro science, with a particular focus on high-resolution coastal urban prediction for flooding, heat waves, and other perils.Prior to her role at Propeller, Julie was most recently the climate strategist at Jupiter Intelligence, a startup delivering hyper-local projections of climate impact and business risk. And she's an adjunct research scientist at Columbia's Climate School. She was previously an associate professor in civil, environmental, and ocean engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology, where she organized field studies globally to improve our understanding and prediction of the Earth's system. And we could go on further about her amazing credentials at the Naval Research Laboratory and more, but let's jump into learning from her about our oceans. In this episode, we cover: [2:39] World Ocean Day activities and awareness[4:22] An overview of Propeller and Julie's work[6:16] The reason behind the firm's ocean focus and its scope[8:00] Propeller's ocean investment categories including, carbon, organics, and industrials[10:04] Major challenges and concerns with oceans today[13:00] Implications of warming ocean waters[15:43] Transition points in ocean health that could lead to cascading effects[19:09] The role of venture capital in supporting ocean-based solutions[20:53] A brief overview of marine biogeochemistry[22:52] Solutions aimed at ocean carbon sequestration[25:36] Challenges with measurement and verification[28:43] The role of data simulation[34:13] Fisheries and food security solutions[35:40] Alternative proteins on the market[38:44] Julie's time at Jupiter Intelligence[41:32] Emissions reductions as a wedge to drive necessary change for our oceans[43:30] Ocean-specific pledges like 30x30[44:39] The importance of benthic environments and vital ecosystems[45:59] What Julie's excited for in the ocean industrials space[47:53] How people can get informed and involved in ocean preservationGet connected:Dr. Julie Pullen LinkedIn / TwitterCody SimmsMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on June 1, 2023

The ocean is key to food security as the main source of protein for more than a billion people. Some 600 million worldwide depend on fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihoods. As hunger continues to spread around the world, urgent efforts are needed to safeguard the ocean and ensure that it continues to provide food for a growing global population, in a sustainable way.Ahead of Thursday's World Oceans Day, Manuel Barange, Director of the Food and Aquaculture Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has been talking to FAO's Michele Zaccheo about the promise of aquaculture, or farming in water, and how the ocean is an essential part of the solution to the interlinked issues of poverty, malnutrition, food security and climate change.
