7 Tage 1 Song

I had 3 profound insights that I want to share with you this week! The first was around needing a plan before making a move. I had been wondering why I knew coming to British Columbia was the right move even though it made no sense to my head Turns out, I had an important lesson to learn about missed opportunities…  I have missed out on many opportunities because I was in this mental box of needing to know a plan before being able to jump out aka see and take opportunities This one hit me hard..kind of like when the beat drops in my favourite song ;) On today's episode I share what realizing this was like and what I am programming myself to do now instead You definitely want to tune it! Beatboxing has long been associated with the hip hop world. But creating beats is not only a form of self-expression; it could help to unlock the full potential behind the human voice, especially for those with a speech impediment. We’re exploring how a music class for disabled children at The Lavelle School for the Blind in New York City uses beatboxing as an effective form of speech therapy. James Kim is the executive director of Bridging Education and Art Together (BEAT) and one of the masterminds behind Beat Rockers, a beatboxing and self-expression programme aimed at young people in New York City. Joining James is a professor of cognitive neuroscience, Sophie Scott who has studied the ways beatboxing challenges what we know about the human voice to examine just how helpful it can be. In this Brothaspeak Podcast episode #77 we speak to famed choreographer & director Jamal Sims about his documentary WHEN THE BEAT DROPS, which is a bold and energetic documentary exploring "bucking," a dance subculture popular within the black LGBTQ community in the South.  Jamal Sims Jamal Sims is one of today’s most sought after choreographer/directors in the industry. Some of his recent projects include the fifth installment of the Step Up series, the acclaimed Microsoft “Surface/Surface Pro” tablet commercial, and the viral “Safety Video” hit for Virgin America. Jamal has also worked with Neil Patrick Harris as the Supervising Choreographer for RENT at the Hollywood Bowl. Now he features his well received documentary, When the Beat Drops. When the Beat Drops Defined by dynamic and unified movements and full of bold pageantry, fierce style, and undeniable form, “bucking” is a dance subculture that is slowly entering the mainstream. More than two decades old, it was created by African American gay men in the South as a response to being excluded from participation in majorette routines, due to homophobia and societal pressure. In When the Beat Drops—a feature documentary debut by famed choreographer Jamal Sims, whose credits include RuPaul’s Drag Race, So You Think You Can Dance, and Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour—the origins and evolution of bucking are explored, as are the life stories and struggles of various Atlanta performers. Doing what Paris Is Burning (Frameline14) and Rize did for ball culture and “krumping” respectively, When the Beat Drops offers an electrifying first cinematic glimpse into the phenomenon of “bucking,” featuring ecstatic dance sequences throughout the film. Anthony, a survivor of violence that threatened his ability to perform, is the creator of one of the leading bucking groups in the city; Flash is a radio personality with a gay mom who has been in and out of jail for half of his life; and Napoleon is a teacher who also runs a non-profit music advocacy group. Many of the performers risk corporate jobs to follow their passion for dance, build up the community, and remain true to themselves. And the candid conversations with team captains about issues and stigma within the community make the film truly shine. Presenting an intimate look at the performers’ dedication to their chosen families and their craft, When the Beat Drops culminates in an edge-of-your-seat, intense competition celebrating triumph, athleticism, and artistry. WHEN THE BEAT DROPS follows a crew of gay African-American men as they pioneer the Southern-rooted underground dance scene known as “bucking.” Together with his crew of fellow gay African-American men, Anthony Davis, a heavy-set, Atlanta-born kid with a love of dance, helped grow bucking into a national movement, complete with fierce competitions. What have you had to overcome to chase your dreams? Today’s guest overcame severe anxiety, explored what he wanted to accomplish in his life, and found the support to make it happen. His journey wasn’t an easy one, but it’s been fulfilling and rewarding, and----the best is yet to come! He’s here as part of our celebration of June as Pride Month, and I’m beyond excited to share his inspiring story with you. Juel D. Lane is an American dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, and one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.” Most recently, Juel was a featured dancer in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert, which starred John Legend, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Sara Bareilles. From October 2017 through March 2018, Alvin Alley American Dance Theater’s second company, Alley II, toured Juel’s piece, “Touch and Agree” around the world. Currently dancing with Bessie Award-winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Juel D. Lane’s dance films, Just Another Day, How to Kill A Ghost, and When the Beat Drops, showcase this multi-talented choreographer’s dynamism.  Find what drives you How does a kid get through anxiety? For young Juel, he was anxious, nervous, and didn’t know WHO he really was. It was his involvement in the arts that broke the hold of anxiety in his life. He says when you figure out what really drives you, then the anxiety evaporates. It was his high school years that revealed his love for the arts and set the path that his storied career would take. With unwavering support from his parents, he found that being on the stage and performing began to “feel like home.” TWEET: Figure out what really drives you and the anxiety will evaporate. @jueldlane #chasingdreams Where the inspiration comes from Can you be real and raw? Juel takes seriously his responsibility to create choreography that “strips labels and shows humanity.” His sources of inspiration bring the rawness and authenticity to his work. He explains that his work, How to Kill a Ghost, came out of a doomed relationship that he was reluctant to let go of. He used the dance as therapy for the healing that needed to take place. Juel produces “honest choreography that comes from an honest state.” He knows that people are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” TWEET: People are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” @jueldlane #chasingdreams   Fighting the fear How do you handle fear in your life? Juel says that he takes fear by the hand and says, “Not today!” When you find your zone and can stay there, then everything else goes away. Juel knows that amazing feeling when the lights dim and the curtains go up and he’s proud to have been a part of such monumental experiences in his career. The success is what pushes him to work hard and want more. When you push yourself, it gives you inspiration to lead into the next project. Manna Minute: Your M&M for today :-) Happy Day folks! As we enter the weekend, there is often a little skip of excitement and joy as though we are dancing to the beat of the weekends rhythm in our heads as the week has ended and we enter the weekend! But I have one question for you today as you enter this weekend, when the beat drops, to which rhythm do we bow to? I pray that as you take a manna minute to listen to this truth, we would dance and bow to the rhythm of heaven itself and see how the Lord will take you into a deeper love walk with Him. Stay blessed Wicktribe #manna #minute #beat #ofheaven for more videos Inspirational link, click this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prA1TnP9geE&list=PLHsT5cpAWBoIqOTT0JAIxaFAR4lb-Dcmy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhwZB1Jzg40&list=PLHsT5cpAWBoI-Ei59sVTmslZZf0TPTGmG
