Season 2.3 I have had multiple experiences of realization, most dominate one would be at the age of 12 laying in a top bunk of a homeless shelter my family and I were in. Tired of having to rely on other people, and realizing if I want a better life it was up to me to achieve this life I dreamt of. The second most dominate realization was when I finally came to the understanding that I could not achieve this life I wanted by bulldozing my way threw alone, I needed help along the way. Yes being Homeless or going through a divorce, was very impactful. I had a lot of depression after my divorce. Having your whole Identity ripped out from underneath you, having a beautiful life and home then having nothing, will put you into a tailspin. with all these experiences and kicks to the teeth, we have a choice every day we wake up and that is either let this crap keep you down or use if for strength. Having nothing is and can be a very powerful thing if you are able to use it properly. I sought help, with a life coach threw friends, finally through a Mentor that is now a father figure in my life. Powerful Story! Love it!! EPISODE SIX: It's not a spelling error. The Beautifull Project is working to tell the real stories of real people with real struggles and its Founder, Sarah Stevens, is as real as she is beautiFULL.
After leaving a career in corporate healthcare in 2016, Sarah set out to find work that better aligned with her passion and purpose. As co-owner of Black Pearl Coaching and Consulting, she served as a consultant to small businesses and nonprofits. Through this work, she accepted a position as the inaugural Executive Director with Lead(h)er, a nonprofit that connects women with mentors to fuel career and community engagement - a position she still holds to this day. In 2018, Sarah launched The Beautifull Project, an entrepreneurial effort that combined her past professional experience with her commitment to pursuing purposeful work. Using the power of collective storytelling, The Project invites women back to their bodies, encouraging, and supporting them as they learn to use their voice and take up space. When Sarah is not thinking up big ideas for The Project, she is shamelessly momming 3 teens, writing, reading, teaching yoga, and leaning as far as possible into an honest, authentic life. Listen in to hear Sarah share: Her experience growing up in a body she deemed to be “too big and too much” Her history of body image battles and disordered eating How her Beautifull Project was born out of the moment her doctor prescribed her speed and a 600 calorie a day diet for weight loss Why “being concerned” for a fat person’s health is a discriminatory crutch How she’s embracing living in a fat body How to talk to your kids about fatness and fat as a neutral descriptor Why thin people must be allies for fat people if we want to create space for all women to live safely in their bodies and in their power Links mentioned: Connect with Sarah Facebook: The Beautifull Project Instagram: @thebeautifullproject and @seeing_sarah The TED talk Podcast: Beauti: The Interviews Thank you to our sponsors: Embr: Go to Embr and Save $50 with code SHAMELESS at checkout. Evolving is an event created by The Mandala Foundation. The vision of this event is to educate, inspire and motivate women by giving you tools and strategies to create a healthy mind and healthy habits! Today in part two, I speak to two women n the panel. Heidi Huiskamp Collins: Just a little over a year and a half ago, at the age of 53, Heidi took a risk by choosing to leave her comfortable finance job, and start her own Investment and Financial business. ONLY 14% of women who are financial advisers. Not only is Heidi a small business owner, who is striving to educate women on their finances, but she serves on a number of boards, and volunteers her time with a number of charitable organizations. Sarah Stevens: After a decade long career in corporate healthcare administration, Sarah decided to realign her professional pursuits with work that more accurately reflected her sense of purpose. Combining her extensive background in operational leadership with her passion for creative endeavors, She began work as a business coach and consultant, focusing primarily on startups and small businesses. Over the past two and half years, she has had the privilege of leading clients - both big and small - as they turn their dreams into a reality, and in the process, She has discovered that purpose-driven work doesn't feel much like work at all. Founder of the Beautifull Project: The Beautifull Project is a storytelling initiative launched in January of 2017. The Project aims to invite women to reclaim space, to use their voice, and to find purpose past the cultural expectations about body and beauty.. During the first year, The Project produced a blog, a podcast, and a virtual community - a chorus of courage - that is a daily invitation for women to belong in the world with substance and strength. "What matters most is how we walk through the fire." - Charles Bukowski + Trigger Warning+ Sexual assault, PTSD In this episode, we welcomed Maggie to the mic to tell her survival story. Maggie is a semi-retired pageant girl and a two-time survivor of sexual assault. She transformed her pain into purpose by founding Trauma Queens, a nonprofit dedicated to helping other survivors of sexual assault - a bad ass, Beautifull move for sure. But do you know what else Maggie is? She is tired. She is recovering from a major loss last year - a loss she describes as the death of a lifelong dream - and she is tired. Tired of the rigidity, the obsessive pursuit of greatness, the endless expectation she be more. She is right in the middle of letting parts of her life come undone... and that is just as bad ass and Beautifull a thing as all of her other work that came before this part. Maggie is grace and grit, full of healing wisdom and hope for the future. Resources for survivors of sexual assault: Local Resources: Family Resources National Resources: RAINN Resource for people with PTSD: NAMI
Writer, seeker, wife, mama, giant fan of love and connection. After leaving a career in corporate healthcare in 2016, Sarah set out to find work that better aligned with her sense of passion and purpose. She now serves as a consultant for start-up nonprofits and small businesses who focus on serving marginalized populations. When she is not serving in the consultant capacity, she is busy writing, reading, giving big love to her people, listening to podcasts, practicing yoga and leaning as hard and as far as possible into an authentic, honest life. It was this part of her life - the part that craves the real, raw pursuit of substance and spirit - that led her to create The Beautifull Project. After a lifetime of obsessively pursuing a "fix" for her body, she has leapt at another way of living... one that has nothing to do with her numerical relationship with gravity or the size of the fabric that clothes her. Instead, she seeks to be full, to take up space, to move in the world with as much substance as her greatness requires.
