Before we get started, can you remind our listeners what Project DIAMOnD is? Project DIAMOnD –which stands for distributed, independent, agile manufacturing on demand – is an initiative powered by Automation Alley and funded by Oakland County, Michigan. Project DIAMOnD was developed in October 2020 to accelerate digital transformation among Michigan manufacturers. In Phase I of the program, which was funded by $10 million from Oakland County and $2 million from Macomb County, Automation Alley distributed 300 3D printers to small- and mid-size manufacturers at no cost, provided workforce training, and networked the printers to be used to fulfill emergency orders at scale. In 2021, the network concept was validated, as it printed and shipped 8,000 tourniquet parts to fulfill a request from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The parts allowed for the assembling of more than 2,600 tourniquets to help those in need of medical assistance during the Russian assault on Ukraine. Q: Project DIAMOnD recently opened a Digital Transformation Center in Auburn Hills. Can you tell us more about this? Of course! It provides companies access to industrial 3D printing equipment, training and support. The new Digital Transformation Center (DTC) is supported by Geofabrica, an Auburn Hills, Michigan business that specializes in the development of custom 3D printing systems and processes for industrial applications. Through the DTC, Project DIAMOnD companies will have access to additive manufacturing courses, a team of experts, and access to additional 3D printers to test and make products. Q: Wow, so this center is really helping to transform the region and state into a magnet for advanced manufacturing and training. What can companies learn at this center? At the Digital Transformation Center, Project DIAMOnD participants will learn how to transform their businesses from a capital and process-based mindset to a design and intellectual property mindset facilitated by 3D printing. This encompasses having an opportunity to launch and validate products before investing in industrial additive manufacturing equipment. They will also retain access to 3D print and post-process products, without the burden of owning and operating complex equipment. Q: What else does the DTC provide? Beyond 3D printing equipment, the DTC will provide access to industrial 3D scanners and advanced modeling and measurement software. Companies will also be able to upload and order parts through the DTC. Q: What companies are eligible to use the center? How can companies get involved in Project DIAMOnD? At this time, Project DIAMOnD is open exclusively to small- and medium-sized companies located in Oakland County. However, if you're outside Oakland County, don't hesitate to apply! In this 3D Paradigm much is coming to the surface to be healed. One aspect is the various schisms and divides that have been created across the globe. In this episode of Beyond 3D we talk about services for the first time. In our third episode of Beyond 3D, we talk with Chris Jones, CEO of Actify, about why it is critical for manufacturers of all sizes to have a digital strategy to consume, visualize and act on the quintillions of bytes being generated every day. It’s not a question of “should I do this” but rather “when and how will I do this?” Relational databases just don’t cut it anymore – the massive amounts of data being generated need to be able to be mined for specific things, visualized and acted upon quickly and easily. The technology is getting there, and is more accessible to manufacturers of all sizes – yes, even the small guys. “Overall the stats and the estimates are the only 10% of all this data that we're collecting is being a) collected and then b) collated. In the manufacturing industry we're down 1 or 2%. I think there's opportunities in all industries but particularly in manufacturing companies because they're also producing a lot more data from their products on how it's used and so on and so forth, warranty issues and wear and tear et cetera. They've got all this information but I just don't think it's being used. Couple to that what's also happened is that I think engineering as a profession has certainly not been the favorite occupation for the brightest and smartest coming out of universities. There's a huge shortage of engineers world wide and particularly in the U.S. The challenge going forward I think is this ... You've got these two opposing forces that need to be solved. You've got this wealth of information that is being produced and then how best to use it with far fewer people. I think going forward this is going to be a real challenge for the industry in general. As I said before, it's not just big sophisticated products and consequently not just big organizations, it's also small to medium companies as well that face this challenge of how best to use this information because if they don't somebody will and somebody will gain a competitive advantage from it I'm sure.” Chris Jones’ challenge to our listeners: “I think if you're a company that doesn't have a digital strategy on how best to use the information that's been produced now that you have within your organization, the historical information and the information that is almost certainly going to be flowing into your organization over the next couple of years, you seriously need to sit down and think about it. Beyond 3D Podcast with David Ewing of Aras Corp – 3D PDF is a Home Run, and Any Company of Any Size Can Afford to Implement It In this episode of the Beyond 3D podcast, David Ewing from the Aras Corporation talks about how he and his team implemented a 3D PDF strategy for a project while he was at B/E Aerospace that ended up saving hundreds of hours, and hundreds of thousands of dollars. And it was so simple and effective, that using 3D PDF has now become the standard on nearly every project. "Yeah, this had a very big customer in Boeing, but the spend was very, very low. We also started with a relativity complex problem. This is something really, in my opinion, it's a home run project. You're a small company, you make widgets that you supply to some other company, this is a great opportunity to streamline your engineering process. You can actually remove some of the drafting steps and go to a 3D PDF. You're getting extremely accurate data in there, machinable, in fact, that's surfacing that are extremely accurate. Now that ... as the consumer of that drawing, whatever customer that you supply to, they don't need to have views that you would typically fret over in making a drawing. They can rotate the model and create as many views as they want. It's an infinite type thing. Think of the component modeling and drafting, this is a perfect fit. It's a home run, and it's really a straight forward project. I don't like to use words easy and impossible, the absolutes, it's just work.” Dave Ewing’s challenge to our listeners: “I've always thought that if you put a smart team together, they'll come up with some great ideas, that they can take a look at what you do. My challenge would be pick a couple folks in your organization to take a look at where some opportunities might be. Go adopt something and drop some money on it. It takes a little bit of investment to make this happen, whether it be starting with a simple drawing, or some type of documentation, and the biggest bang is really getting that 3D in there. I would say your simple piece part drawings. Go do it. This is not hard. It's not necessarily easy. You just got to work through it. This fits right into any PLM system. Granted, Aras has it built right in. Day one, we bet on it. This is the right way to go, but hey look, our brother in the PLM industry, they supported also. You don't have to be on Aras. Siemens supports it. Go off and do it. Pick a project, go do it. I would highly suggest an agile methodology so that you can start small, get some quick wins, and iterate on it, and keep refining it until you get to something and say, "Hey, we're done." Then you generated this win and energy and a better business process. That energy, now you can run with that. You've got a whole bunch of people saying, "Now they're pulling on the rope. Hey, I've seen this work. Now can we do X, Y, and Z?" That's powerful because now you've got people all bought in across the organization and that's huge.
