Description: For a time in late 2019, early 2020 impeachment was all the talk about social media and town. As of a bit later in 2020, impeachment has taken a back seat due to other events, but the impeachment of a President of the United States is never a small thing. This was especially so in the early 1970’s during the Watergate controversy involving President Richard Nixon. Our guest today, Donald Stinson had a front row seat to all of these events as a teenage employee at the White House. Let’s hear about Don’s unique experiences and view point. Don will help us see if Hollywood Hates History with two films, Frost Nixon and Nixon. Title: HHH Quo Vadis with the Partial Historians Description: Drs and Radford and Greenfield of the Partial Historians podcast love movies. When we talked about having a collaboration episode for my other podcast, The History of the Papacy, they suggested the 1951 drama Quo Vadis. This is a spectacular movie and kicked off a whole genre a over the top epics. Will Hollywood hate or love history today? Title: Hollywood Hates History: The Alamo 1994 Description: Today, I mount a brave defense of a lone outpost of the movie podcast internet. I will make my stand to defend the Alamo from 2004. The battle of the Alamo was one of the most iconic battles in American and possibly world history. Description: We’re continuing on our trend of always coming back around to John Wayne. In the Green Beret, which was released during the height of the Vietnam War, John Wayne picks up his M-16 to singlehandedly win the conflict in Vietnam. Will he succeed? Hollywood Hates History: Conqueror (1956) Description: The next few movies Scott and I will talk about have at least one common theme, they all involve John Wayne in one way or another. John Wayne either really loved history or truly hated it and wanted to punish it. Whatever John Wayne felt, he had a talent for turning any era of history into a great Western. Today Scott and I (and of course you) have to decide whether John Wayne respected the tradition of Genghis Khan or if he shot it full of flaming fire arrows. Today, Scott is going to defend the 1956 classic: The Conqueror starring John Wayne. Title: Hollywood Hates History: The Scarlet Letter (1995)Description: Every so often, Hollywood gets a movie based on a historical event and piece of literature absolutely perfect. The producers really get the tone and big ideas of a novel and the historical events the novel depicted. It is a tough job. I wish we had a movie like that today, but we 100 percent don’t. The Scarlet Letter from 1995 stars Demi Moore and Gary Oldman and tries to bring the seminal American novel “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne to the silver screen. Let’s see if Hollywood Hates History today. Title: Hollywood Hates History: Dracula Untold Description: Today we have a surprising episode of Hollywood Hates History. Scott Rank decided to defend Dracula Untold from 2014. I thought this would be a slam dunk to go up against. I was wrong. There is quite a bit of history in this movie. The film makers got things right in this movie that one would never think they would get right. Title: Hollywood Hate History: The Da Vinci Code Description: Today we have a real treat for Hollywood Hates History. I’ll tell you, Hollywood seriously hated history on this one, the 2006 spectacle, The Da Vinci Code. I actually had to defend this movie and it was not easy. I tried my best mount the best defense possible because this movie sliced and diced history so badly. The Da Vinci Code might have been a movie you had to watch on a long flight during the middle of the first decade of the 2000’s, but if you listen to this episode you’ll also get to learn some great actual history. We'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. Now we're back. We're back at Sparta and Helen is going off to try. What was the deal with it because then this is another one where troy went by like 35 different names. How culturally similar to the. Were they to the Greeks or were they completely different? There's a lot to that too, so troy was special in the sense that it sat right there on the periphery of the hittite empire. So like in the hittite empire was very land. It was not very landlocked. It was landlocked. So troy was kind of like it's c arm, so to speak, that the theory is it got very rich as it traded inland with the hittites and beyond. So Heinrich Schliemann was the archeologists who found my [inaudible] and troy there's a long history of a shaman and we could talk about and that could take several hours. But anyway, when he got to troy found that there was nine cities, so like they built on top of each other all the way right up until the Roman era. So even after troy was sacked and we'll get to that later on, the Greeks build over it. They built another city and then the Romans built on another city on top of it. So he dug all the way down. And so like the bottom, the lowest layer would have been the earliest settlement. So you find that like in the bronze age or the early, the early bronze age for the most part, they were technologically ahead of mainland Greece because for the most part civilization came east to west. So you know, the cradle of civilization was Egypt or booze in the Mesopotamian Egypt. And... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's based on the Iliad by homer, an ancient piece of work which we'll get into it, so run time of approximately a hundred and 60 minutes and it's scored in the mid fifties and both rotten tomatoes and metacritic, so not like off the charts but pretty decent, but cast as a mega cast. We're talking Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, a lot of bases that would be very recognizable, but maybe might not put your finger on them, such as Brian Cox. How did those turn out for the team USA team did her brooks to demonstrate and those early games that they were ready to take on the Soviet juggernaut team. I'll give you two to two examples. One is famous. Anybody who knows the story is going to know this one, they played team Norway and they tied them three to three, and herb's mind that is a game they should have won outright. No two ways about it. They should have destroyed team Norway because heard had been training them so hard that they were in the best shape of their lives. He said that you might not be the most skilled team in this tournament, but I swear to God you will be the most conditioned. And it's funny. I have to deviate for a second with my own local team, the blue jackets. We got a new president of hockey operations a few years ago. I don't know if he consciously borrowed this from herb or if it was just the planets aligning or what, but he said, you know, we might not be the most talented team out there. We will be in the best condition. We will play all, all 60 minutes. And I thought that was a really good way to do it because you can lose a game in the flick of a switch. Yeah, thanks for. Thanks for having me. It's my pleasure. Now, can you maybe give us a little bit about your background and your areas of academic interest? You're right, you want my academic background? So I, um, uh, I uh, did my graduate work at Princeton theological seminary, um, did both a masters of divinity and a phd there. I went to Princeton because I was interested in studying the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament and the world expert in that topic was a man named Bruce Metzger who taught at Princeton theological seminary. And so I had, I had no other particular interest in going to princeton seminary other than this fellow top there. And so I went there and did a master's thesis with him, then did my phd there. And, uh, the field I worked on was the study of the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. I'm the technical field of textual criticism. Um, while I was finishing my phd there, I started teaching at Rutgers University, uh, in New Jersey and was there for four years. And now I've been at a University of North Carolina for 30 years. So that's the rough academic background. So you got interested in the Bible through the Greek manuscripts. What drew you towards those?... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we are going to wrap up our series on blade runner and blade runner 2049 and the past three episodes. We've discussed these two movies and the really powerful themes they uncovered and discussed. Today. We're going to discuss how the two movies fit together and explore a few more issues that came up and just try and tie these two movies together. I'm very happy to be joined again by interest of the reconsider podcast and as we well know since you've listened to the three previous episodes, we know that reconsider as a political and current events podcast, Eric and as partners and or help you contextualize current politics and history and broader forces and political theory, reconsider helps you rise above the one liners, the 140 character politics and the tribal narrative and their motto is we don't do the thinking for you. Thank you so much for coming on for a fourth time, Eric. Oh yeah, my pleasure. I mean obviously I love your show and one of the things I really love about talking about movies like this is it lets us look at, um, and by like this, I mean, I mean really good movies that do a great job exploring society, exploring humanity. They let us as people really look into humanity and looking to society today through in another place where it's sort of safe where we can say. Or we can say, Hey, what, what does this tell us about humans as a whole about society, about government, about how we get along with each other as a whole where we're not as emotionally tied up in it, right? Because this, this isn't our world. It's just a story. But we can learn a lot from it. And so... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we are very happy to be joined by Eric of the reconsider podcast. And today we're going to take a deep dive into the movie Blade Runner 2049. And if you listen to last week's episode we talked about Blade Runner from 1982. So these are two great episodes to listen to back to back. So I highly suggest you go back and listen to that episode. But it's not required obviously. Not so much because you need that as background knowledge for this movie or episode it's just because it was a great show. So thank you so much Eric for being on today.Yeah my pleasure. I love your show and I love this movie and I love talking about it.Great. Thank you. So reconsider is a podcast about politics and news but it's really much more than just the news of the day sort of thing that you can get on TV or radio Zander and Eric which I'm sad to say Zander wasn't able to join us today but they help you contextualize current politics and history in the broader forces and in political theory reconsider helps you rise above the one liners. The 140 character politics and the tribal narratives. Their motto is We don't do the thinking for you and they really don't. And that's why I think it's such an amazing podcast. Do you have anything you could to add to that Eric.No thanks man. I think one of the things that I really like about reconsider is that Zander and I don't always agree on everything and we do a great job. I think showcasing how to discuss stuff in a way that you know in a way which we're really learning and one of these days I want to do a behind the scenes episode where we actually because we build these we build these episodes out with a lot of disagreement and we do a bunch of research and learn some stuff as we go. So I kind of want to do one of these blind to show a little more of how we do that. That's my favorite part is when we disagree and it's a good time.Yeah that's really cool. I'd love to listen to an episode like that. Now this movie Blade Runner 2049 is currently in the theaters. If you're listening to this show in the 2017 2018 time period it stars Ryan Gosling as Kay... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I highly suggest you go back and listen to part 1 of this conversation. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. You brought up those ideas of neech Nietzschean and the Christian elements and all those really come together when Roy confronts Dr. Tai Rao. What happens there and what how do those themes all tied together that you've brought up that you brought up earlier. I it's funny I as I was making my notes I was thinking oh this is my favorite scene. Now this is my favorite scene. Now this one and I have six I realized six favorite scenes so this is one of them. And what happens is Roy finally gets to Dr. Tyrrel by tricking Sebastian and then coercing Sebastian and they get access. What's interesting by play is by playing and finishing the same moves as what's called The Immortal Game in chess. So it's a famous 1400's chess game where the I forget the guy's name. Whatever where the guy who ended up winning sacrificed tons of pieces to fool his opponent into making a move that exposed the king and so yeah checkmate. With some minor pieces at the end those pieces of course represent those minor pieces represent the replicants who are treated like pawns. The King of course is Dr. Tyrrel and so once Roy makes those moves over the phone. Tyrrel actually Roy tells Sebastion to do it. Subash makes those moves over the phone and Tyrel is very impressed and he says something must be on your mind Subash. C'mon. And the big reveal. Roy is there. Tyrrel doesn't seem to surprise he actually says like I'm surprised it took me so long to get here. He knew that Roy was coming to talk to him. They have this discussion over whether Tyrrel can give Roy more life but Tyrrel cannot and they in that discussion Tyrrel tries to reason with Roy saying that he's lived this incredibly powerful. Flourishing life especially compared to other humans and he has the quote the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. It's this great scene of his face being very fatherly and in fact of course being the character of God he created Roy he decided how long Roy got to live. And he's judging Roy as having lived a good life and sort of saying it's okay for you to die and here's with a... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we are going to talk about the 1982 movie Blade Runner based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The book and the film are set in the near future. Postapocalyptic dystopia. One of my favorite genres as is common with the dystopian science fiction genre. Blade Runner addresses a number of political and political science issues political theory and even philosophy are important for our frameworks. While Blade Runner is not overtly political it does tie deeply into questions of humanist and theological philosophy and to morality as well. Ultimately all of this is critical for us deciding on what political action which is just our own moral personal moral action on collective scale to take. That's why it's fascinated Eric for so long and I'm very happy to be joined by Eric and Zander hosts of reconsider podcasts. Thank you guys so much for coming on today. We are happy to be here. Thanks for having us. Reconsider is actually a political podcast to help you contextualize current politics and history and broader forces and political theory reconsider helps you rise above the one liners. The 140 character politics and tribal narratives. Their motto is We don't do the thinking for you and they really don't. That's why it's such an amazing podcast and one of my personal favorites. Thanks. Before we dig too deeply here's some production details. We watched the final cut which is the director's addition. Eric you had commented on that. Why do you think that that's a better cut of the film than it went through several evolutions. Yeah I actually went through for the theatrical cut the international CUT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT AND THE FINAL CUT THE FINAL CUT being the one that Ridley Scott the director liked the best. And I have strong opinions on this and I think most other diehard Bladerunner fans do. There's a consensus generally that the final cuts the right one not only because Ridley Scott liked best. I don't know if Philip K. Dick liked it best but the reason we like it best is that the theatrical cut has a number of scenes. The biggest of which is the ending. The second biggest of which is the fact that Harrison Ford does a monologue. Does it like a backwards memory monologue. Like a lot of noir... Northup, also sometimes called Northrup, his freedom, and even his identity are stripped from him, and he continually finds himself in harsher and harsher conditions where he has to make even deeper critical moral decisions. I highly suggest you go back download analysts and part 1 of this fascinating discussion. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. The movie kind of fades out in the ending it has a really key scene towards the end that's really painful for the writer whereas wife I don't think it might actually not be his wife it's his girlfriend dies and the captain the Stasi captain tries to stop it. But it's kind of like one of those. The whole thing where you get the taste of like there's nothing that's going to stop any of us. But they do have a scene where the Stazi captain he's been demoted and he's in a basement somewhere and the wall falls and his friend hears it on his radio and he's like oh yeah. The wall falls or something to that effect and he just walks off the job like what was it like. And those remember he says der maur is ofen is often which is like every time I hear that sentence it's just like so I think yeah anybody that grew up in Germany or like the wall is open it's just like those are just one of the most powerful sentences you can say in German like this is like ever like yeah anyway sorry. And I remember it as you know as a piece of history that as a 10 year old or whatever it was like you knew that this was something that was history when it was happening. I think that even if you were if you were something of the eye of an age where you knew that what was going on and honored that this was something that was really big that was happening. What was it like to be right there. What happened. The thing is like I was definitely too young to know exactly what was like fully understand that. But my dad was so excited and my dad is not a history buff. He's a traditional nerd like he's a software engineer. He doesn't care about kings and dates and all that. I got that from my mom but he was so excited. You know I come out of school and he's sitting there you know he's in the street with his weight and they're in his car and he's like honkies seems like Justin Travis you know get in and we jump in the car and we're still in our Fasching costumes are carnival. It's a German movie and it's German name as Das Leben Der Anderen and we are joined by Travis Dow. Travis is really the podcasting man of all seasons. He is the host of countless podcasts including but not limited to the history of Germany. The history of alchemy Bohemican can the history of Africa and the German language podcast Americana for Euch is how you might say no. That's right yeah. And did I catch all of them Travis. I think so. Who's counting. Yeah. Travis thank you so much for being on. I thought this movie is perfect for you. I really felt like even watching this movie I was like Travis is the perfect guy for this movie yeah. And this is a movie that gripped me like I. Yeah definitely. Very interesting movie and I grew up in Germany and lived in Prague. And this movie was kind of like you know I and I moved to Prague for the curiosity of like living on the other side you know the life of the others to see what that was like and how the city is changing and all that. And you know what are they doing now. Czech Republic a new country and this type of movie just feeds into my curiosity of you know how it was and I eat it up for sure. Yeah. This movie is was released in 2009 but it's set in the East Germany of the mid 1980s really at the tail end of the Cold War just a few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and as we usually do we're going to use this movie as a way to get into a deeper conversation about East Germany and the Eastern Bloc countries as well as how countries how these countries progressed after the fall of the Berlin Wall which was a critical element of this movie The Lives of the others. To some production details about the movie the director and writer was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It's a German language film but it is available with English subtitles. It got a really high. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you be on the big screen. 00:00:12 What was going on in Luther's mind when he nailed up those the 95 theses on that cathedral door did he. Now at that point that he was doing something really big or did he think that he was just sparking a debate. 00:00:31 That's one of the big discussions about that event will probably never be fully resolved. It should be said that putting 95 putting theses up on the castle church door was how you organized a debate. And he was just asking to organize a debate. It's not like he was you know shoving this up the pope's nose or something like that. But and it's also questionable whether Luther did it himself. Some people have suggested he had an assistant go do it. That stuff doesn't really matter. He certainly knew that you know some of his points were contentious but he figured that it would be you know talked about discussed quietly amongst the professionals in Wittenberg. I think that said you see this a little bit in the 2003 movie. There is a character that was named I believe Lucas Cranach who was the court painter of Frederick the wise who was also one of the early success stories of printing. 00:01:38 And you see him twice in the 2003 movie and the... I'm your host Steve and today I'm joined by Annie who is the writer of the blog five foot 2.Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being on today and yeah thank you for having me. Yeah it's great. CanSpeaker 1: you tell us a little bit about your background and your biography and maybe some of your web sites and where we can find you.Speaker 2: Well yeah. My my you all well is a falsehood to blog dot com and I'm a university student and I'm from Birmingham in England and I got my degrees in English and I'm going to do my Masters in film and write in and I'm pretty much very obsessed with Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare. Sins of other life. Drama English it's open and it's all been incredibly good for me at the moment.Speaker 1: The picture of Dorian Gray is actually more from books than your and in our conversations beforehand you say that this is the type of book that you like to revisit.Speaker 2: Yeah I make a habit of reading this book at least once every month. I have done for the past probably about 10 years which means on time.Speaker 1: Wow that's incredible. Well we'll start off with a brief introduction of the movie. This movie Dorian Gray is based on the 1890 classic. The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This is a story of a handsome youth who is able to somehow maintain his beautiful exterior for many years but his spirit or core becomes completely the opposite rotten and corrupted. The tagline of the movie is forever young forever cursed. Just briefly the production details of the movies. This is all courtesy of Wikipedia. In the Internet Movie Database it was released in September of 2009 and it was filmed in various locations around London and England. It really has an incredibly rich and detailed background. It's directed by Oliver Parker with a runtime of about 112 minutes and Ed only received 43 percent rotten tomatoes from and met a critic which I thought was kind of surprising and it had a box office of 22 million dollars.Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about the cast. Before we dig into the context of this movie because it is when you're talking about a book and a movie and a really detailed historical context that the movie and the book break out it's this becomes a little bit more complicated and maybe a little bit more fun as well. Just overall What were your impressions of the casting decisions of this movie.Speaker 2: I think part of my overall OK decisions. I mean Baso was incredibly well cross Henry sort of Volkoff that I think... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I'm not sure it was. It was a close call it starred Russell Crowe Jennifer Connelly Russell Crowe as no wife. And he's a countryman of yours right. A fellow Australian. 00:00:39 Technically he's a Kiwi but we claim all New Zealand is as Australian. 00:00:42 Yeah he's really a versatile actor I've really enjoyed just about every movie I've seen him in although he's one of those actors like he's basically the Australian Tom Hanks. 00:00:55 He's in he's Russell Crowe in every movie in a slightly different Russell Crowe. But he's still Russell Crowe. 00:01:04 Yeah. I mean he almost has the same haircut in every movie the haircut and the beard that's he's Russell Crowe you know. But then you have Jennifer Connelly then you have Jennifer Connelly Noah's wife. Namah and Connelly She's an American actress and she's starred in movies of Marea various quality. 00:01:29 She won an Academy Award star opposite Russell Crowe and another Russell Crowe movie A Beautiful Mind but maybe that's another one for the future episode and then we have Ray Winstone starring as lovable right. 00:01:46 Ray Winstone an unknown. He stars as somebody named Tubal Cain who probably doesn't come up in your memories of Sunday school class but he's in there and he's really the ultimate bad guy of the movie. He really needs to take a couple of comedic roles but he's really he's typecast as a cockney gangster and he kind of plays one in this movie. He never really drops the Cockney accent at all. What did you think about old Ray in this movie.... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
