Programledare: Cecilia Blomberg.Producent: Mattias Berg.

Or, Claude Writes Another Too-Clever Title Prompting Sean to Send Perplexed DMs. In this episode of our Around the World in Twenty Films series, we look at a pair of films in which German citizens are forced to confront their own past. This isn't in a whole "The Nazis were us the entire time!" kind of attitude but rather in the way that some of the tactics that were employed in the past are coming back in subtle ways to haunt their present. And we start with The Lives of Others, from 2006, which was written and directed (his directorial debut) by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It's 1984 and the fall of the Berlin Wall is still a few years away, which means that everyone in East Germany is subject to surveillance of one kind or another. It's a Communist country and everyone is equal, but clearly some people are more equal than others. And people like Georg Dreyman, a playwright of some renown, is subject to extra scrutiny not because of his political views, which generally align with the government's, but because the Minister of Culture is hot for Dreyman's girlfriend. And Gerd Wiesler, the agent assigned to monitor Dreyman, spends most of his time listening in on Dreyman's life. What happens when Dreyman's work starts to turn its political eye in another direction? We talk about that, and a bunch of other stuff in Part One of our episode. In Part Two, we jump to the other side of the Berlin Wall and 2008's The Baader-Meinhof Complex. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

In this episode, I speak with Titus Techera and Flagg Taylor about several films that address communism and the effects of tyranny and deceit on the human soul. We discuss themes of courage, freedom, privacy, shame, the purpose and role of art, and how we can become comprised over time by assenting to falsehood. We discuss how these films portray the challenges for regular people and how the experience of living under communism has lessons for us today. We also discuss the question of art and its relation to beauty, truth, and morality. Films we discuss include Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's "The Lives of Others", about the spying of East German Stasi, and "Never Look Away", about Nazi and Communist totalitarianism, eugenics, truth, and the role of art. We also discuss the brilliant Polish film by Andrzej Wajda, "Katyn", about the Soviet murder of 12,000 Polish army officers, "Mr. Jones", about the Ukrainian Genocide by the Soviet Union, and more. These films are morally serious and very important for many reasons, not only because they clearly present the evils of communism, but because they powerfully reveal the challenges of living under totalitarianism and make us wrestle with our own weaknesses and corruption. They don't let us off the hook easily or simplify the difficulties. They also challenge us to self-introspection. As a character in "Katyn" says, "What does it matter that you think differently, if you don't act or live differently?" Warning: these films are not for children. They have some disturbing scenes, and I discuss some of my critiques in the podcast. Visit https://themoralimagination.com/episodes/titus-techera-amp-flagg-taylor for show notes and resources.

Join us as we do what we do every episode, which is explore the lives of others, except this time we really are exploring the actual film, The Lives of Others (2006) directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. This is an exceptional debut that feels like a fourth or fifth film from an already established filmmaker. The film takes place in 1984 East Berlin, telling the story of a Stasi officer who listens in on a writer and his lover, and becomes increasingly absorbed by their lives. Hopefully, you’ll listen in here and become increasingly absorbed yourself. In the pod. Not in our lives. Enjoy.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's first film The Lives Of Others won the best Foreign Language Oscar, his follow-up The Tourist was a critical disaster. How will his latest - Never Look Away - fare critically and at the box office? Jack Thorne's latest play The End Of History has just opened at London's Royal Court Theatre. It's the story - over three decades - of a left-leaning family who love each other and love to bicker. 8 Days To The Moon on BBC TV follows the progress of the three astronauts who went to the Moon half a century ago in Apollo 11. It uses previously unreleased audio recordings from within the lunar pod mixed with recreations of the journey. Fleischman Is In Trouble is the debut novel by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, previously a features writer at The New York Times and GQ. It has had glowing reviews; what will our panle make of it? An exhibition of work by Swiss-born artist Felix Vallotton at London's Royal Academy includes paintings and woodcuts in the many styles he adopted during his career. The Oscar-nominated epic historical drama follows 30 years in the life of a great artist, loosely based on Gerhard Richter, one of the 20th century's most admired visual artists, as it sees him struggling to create meaningful work under Nazism, Socialism and the Avant-Garde. The striking grey exterior of V&A Dundee has been likened to the prow of a ship and to sea cliffs. Inside it houses treasures of Scottish craft. Men hvad driver dem? In this episode, I continue my exploration of films that helped me through my grief after my father died in 2006. "The Lives of Others" is an important film in my life. I have intense memories of watching it for the first time in a theater. It's about playwright, Georg Dreyman, and his lover, Christa-Maria Sieland, who come under surveillance in 1984 in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). After WWII, Germany was split between West Germany and East Germany, the latter being controlled by the Soviet Union. It was a repressive government that used a secret police known as the Stasi to turn everyday people into informants through threats, interrogation, and violence. I talk about why this film is so important due to its examination of themes like surveillance and how people resist (or don't resist) under a repressive government. What questions do you want your audience asking at any given time? Waaaaaaaaaay back in DZ-05, Stu and Chas examined how shifting narrative point of view (i.e. what the audience knows in relation to the characters on screen) heightens emotions in any given scene. We've now taken that micro idea and applied it to the macro: how can deciding what the audience knows and when in relation to the characters organise your story? Are whole sequences or even acts driven by the audience following a character, feeling concerned about a character, empathising with a character or being absorbed in the irony of knowing more than all the characters interacting on screen. To tackle this topic, Stu and Chas dive in to films that make very conscious structural choices in relation to narrative POV, namely: GET OUT, DUNKIRK and the underrated German film THE LIVES OF OTHERS (with honourable mentions to LA CONFIDENTIAL and MANCHESTER BY THE SEA). Wait till the end to hear poor Stu's mind absolutely blown in relation to the Kuleshov effect. As always: SPOILERS ABOUND Audio quotations used for educational purposes only. It's a German movie and it's German name as Das Leben Der Anderen and we are joined by Travis Dow. Travis is really the podcasting man of all seasons. He is the host of countless podcasts including but not limited to the history of Germany. The history of alchemy Bohemican can the history of Africa and the German language podcast Americana for Euch is how you might say no. That's right yeah. And did I catch all of them Travis. I think so. Who's counting. Yeah. Travis thank you so much for being on. I thought this movie is perfect for you. I really felt like even watching this movie I was like Travis is the perfect guy for this movie yeah. And this is a movie that gripped me like I. Yeah definitely. Very interesting movie and I grew up in Germany and lived in Prague. And this movie was kind of like you know I and I moved to Prague for the curiosity of like living on the other side you know the life of the others to see what that was like and how the city is changing and all that. And you know what are they doing now. Czech Republic a new country and this type of movie just feeds into my curiosity of you know how it was and I eat it up for sure. Yeah. This movie is was released in 2009 but it's set in the East Germany of the mid 1980s really at the tail end of the Cold War just a few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and as we usually do we're going to use this movie as a way to get into a deeper conversation about East Germany and the Eastern Bloc countries as well as how countries how these countries progressed after the fall of the Berlin Wall which was a critical element of this movie The Lives of the others. To some production details about the movie the director and writer was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It's a German language film but it is available with English subtitles. It got a really high. Rotten Tomatoes of 93 percent. And I met a critic of 89 percent which I think is the highest of any movie we've done so far. It was filmed throughout Berlin which we will talk quite a bit about it as a runtime of 137 minutes. It was the 2006 winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film and it won just a pile of German and European awards. On top... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Just because it's mid-April doesn't' meant the Dudes can't enjoy a good horror movie, so they're reviewing Ken Russell's "Gothic" from 1986. It's an embellished retelling of the night Mary Shelley spent at Lord Byron's Swiss estate, which inspired her to write her famous novel "Frankenstein." Of course, this is Ken Russell, so it's got plenty of horrifying themes, images, and concepts.
