This phrase has significant theological implications, especially in the context of how different Christian traditions interpret its meaning. While various denominations, including Roman Catholicism and Mormonism, have their own views on this passage, this article will focus on a biblical perspective of the "keys to the kingdom" and offer a critique of how it is understood in Mormon doctrine.Mormon Doctrine of "Keys to the Kingdom"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormonism) teaches that the "keys to the kingdom" refer to the authority of the priesthood, which they believe was restored through Joseph Smith. In Mormon doctrine, the "keys" of the priesthood are held by Church leaders, specifically the president of the Church, who is considered a prophet, seer, and revelator. These keys are believed to include the authority to perform necessary ordinances for salvation, such as baptism, confirmation, marriage, and other sacred rites.Mormon teaching emphasizes that the priesthood keys are necessary for entering the celestial kingdom, the highest level of heaven in LDS theology. They believe that these keys were lost after the death of the original apostles and were restored through Joseph Smith during the early 19th century. In this view, the LDS Church is the only church that has the fullness of the priesthood keys necessary for salvation. What Does the Bible Really Teach about the "Keys to the Kingdom"?Matthew 16:15-19 (NLT) 15 Then Jesus asked his disciples, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”In Matthew 16:19, the "keys to the kingdom" symbolize authority, specifically spiritual authority in the context of the Church. The image of keys implies the power to open and close doors, which in this case represents the ability to grant or deny access to the kingdom of heaven. This authority is often understood to involve the power of teaching, guiding, and governing within the Church under Christ's leadership.Authority to Bind and Loose: The terms "bind" and "loose" in first-century Jewish context referred to legal and religious...

Should Christians tithe, or was that just for Jews? What does the Bible REALLY teach about tithing? The verses you usually hear about tithing might not mean that at all! In this week's 10-minute equipping episode, Pastor Jim Ramos teaches you what the Bible does and doesn't say about tithing, and gives you his interpretation of what this means practically for the Christian man. You'll walk away with a better idea of whether the "tithe" applies to you and what you should do about it. [Honor God through your fitness. Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Chase and I use Kevin Deyoung's book, What Does the Bible Really Teach About Homosexuality, to guide us through the main passages of Scripture that deal with homosexuality. Often, people fall into one of two ditches when it comes to homosexuality. In the left ditch, homosexuality is NOT a sin. In the right ditch, homosexuality is THE sin. In this conversation, we seek to walk the middle road and teach homosexuality is a sin, like other sins, that must be repented of by God's grace. Some of the texts we discuss include: Genesis 1-2, Matthew 19, Ephesians 5, Romans 1, Genesis 19, Jude 7, Leviticus 18 and 20. Next week, Chase and I will continue our discussion and look at 1 Timothy 1 and 1 Corinthians 6. Ask me a question | kory.cunningham@gmail.com

This episode might be one of the highest voltage "third rail word" episodes we've done to date. It's because we're discussing what we believe to be a biblical understanding of homosexuality. In this series, we wanted to dive into and talk about the things that our world is talking about. We asked our church to give us topics and ideas to speak and point to what Jesus says about these things and answering the question of what does the Bible say about the hot topics of our day. No opinions. Just truth. Not sugar coated. We pray this series brings you closer to the heart of God for his people, for our nation, for our cities. In this message, Pastor Joey continues to talk about one of the hotter topics of our day: sexuality but even more specifically Gender, Identity & LGBTQ+ 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Leviticus 18:22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination… 1 Timothy 1:8-11 8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. What Does the Bible Really Teach about Everything? By Kevin DeYoungTale as old as Time (and Older Still) The first person we meet in the Bible is God (Gen. 1:1). And the first thing we see about this God is that he is before all things (cf. Ps. 90:1-2). God is self-existent, independent, without beginning or end, without equal, the Creator God distinct from his creation, a holy and unrivaled God-eternal, infinite, and, in his essence, unlike anything or anyone that ever was, is, or will be. This is the God we first meet in the first verse of the first book of the Bible. And this is the God who created all things (Neh. 9:6; Acts 14:15; 17:24), He created heaven and what is in it, the earth and what is in it, and the sea and what is in it (Rev. 10:6). What's more, he made men and women as the crown of his creation, making them in his image and after his likeness (Gen. 1:26). He created them to rule and to reproduce and to have a relationship with him (Gen. 1:26-28; cf. 3:8).But the first man and the first woman disobeyed God's command. They listened to the Slithering One as he tempted them to doubt the clarity and goodness of God's word (Gen. 3:1-5). They took a bite from the forbidden fruit, and the fruit bit back. When sin entered the world, it was not just a fall; it was a curse. The man, the woman, the Serpent, the ground—all felt the sting of the curse so that "not the way things are supposed to be” became "the way things are." In just retribution for sin, God drove the man and the woman from the garden and placed an angel to guard the way to the tree of life (Gen. 3:24). Their heaven on earth was no more, at least not until God would bring heaven back to earth (Gen. 3:15). The central plotline of the story of Scripture was set in motion: a holy God making a way to dwell in the midst of an unholy people.Space does not permit a full retelling of this story, but one only has to look at the Promised Land or the temple to see the same narrative carrying forward. The Promised Land was a type of Eden, and Eden was a foreshadowing of the Promised Land. God describes the creation of Israel in the same way he describes the creation of the heavens and the earth (Jer. 4:23-26; 27:5). The boundaries of Eden and the boundaries of Canaan are similar (Gen. 2:10-14; 15:18). When Jacob comes back from the east to enter Canaan, he is met by an angel (Gen. 32:22-32)—an allusion to the angel placed at the entrance to Eden. Joshua likewise encounters a heavenly guardian when approaching the Promised Land by way of Jericho (osh. 5:13-15).Keep reading HERE Connect with me at kory.cunningham@gmail.com.

We're talking about 2 of Tom Taylor's series in modern DC comics, "Nightwing" and "Son of Kal-El"! Hosts Joshua Noel and Joe Dea discuss the story beats, the characters, and their relationship to one another! How can Christians read a comicbook about a gay superhero? Can a 'haven', like what Nightwing is building, truly exist on this side of heaven? How far can money take us to helping our societal issues? Is Nightwing a sidekick or the new Batman? Why does Clark Kent (aka Kal-El) trust Dick Grayson to watch over Jon Kent? What significance does Superman's boyfriend, Jay Nakamura, play in the over-arching story? What does it look like for a normal human like Dick to help mentor an alien with godlike abilities like Jon Kent? We discuss all this and way more! Let us know what you think of Tom Taylor's run on these characters on our website: systematicgeekology.org *When discussing human sexuality, Joshua and Joe both represent a more traditional, conservative Christian sexual ethic. After mentioning there is a diversity of views on this topic, Joshua mentioned a few books to help people acquaint themselves with these diverse views from within Christendom and he wanted to share the links to these books here (noting that he gave the wrong name for DeYoung's work in the episode): https://www.amazon.com/God-Gay-Christian-Biblical-Relationships-ebook/dp/B00F1W0RD2/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3L92F84YE5F7A&keywords=god+and+the+gay+christian+by+matthew+vines&qid=1660060993&sprefix=god+and+the+%2Caps%2C81&sr=8-1 ("God and the Gay Christian", by Matthew Vines) https://www.amazon.com/Single-Gay-Christian-Personal-Identity-ebook/dp/B0751MPKK1/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1564IRNDDUXHN&keywords=single+gay+christian&qid=1660061058&sprefix=single+gay%2Caps%2C91&sr=8-3 ("Single, Gay Christian", by Gregory Cole) https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Really-Teach-about-Homosexuality-ebook/dp/B00U9MQVXO/ref=sr_1_1?crid=31JKADMNKYDA&keywords=homosexuality+kevin+deyoung&qid=1660061118&sprefix=homosexuality+kevin+deyoung%2Caps%2C53&sr=8-1 ("What Does the Bible Really Teach About Homosexuality?", by Kevin DeYoung)
Pride Month is everywhere, and it's difficult for Christians. We want to be Christ to people, so how do we share the love of the Gospel with those who are trapped in sexual sin? And what do we do about the pro-LGBTQ+ messaging of things like Disney's Lightyear? Should we shop at stores that support such an agenda? Jerran and Jon wrap up the series by talking about where we go from here. Our kids are inheriting a world where these ideas about human sexuality are normal. So as Christians, what do we do? How do we interact with the world in a way that stands for truth, but is motivated by love? What should our posture be? What are some important questions that we will need to talk through with our kids? And how do we navigate some of the uncertainty that will be unavoidable? After this episode, we will be taking a short break but will be back with more episodes soon! In this episode we mention and cite material from the following books: "Embodied" by Preston Sprinkle "What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality" by Kevin DeYoung "Messy Grace" by Caleb Kaltenbach "Emerging Gender Identities" by Mark Yardhouse & Julia Sadusky "Changing Our Mind" by David Gushee "God and the Gay Christian" by Matthew Vines Title Music "Welcome to the Groove" by SonicMusic
This episode is the 2nd half of conversation from last time where Jerran and Jon talk about how to better understand how our culture thinks about sexuality. In this episode we explore what Scripture has to say and how we can apply it to the culture we find ourselves in today. In this episode we mention and cite material from the following books: "Embodied" by Preston Sprinkle "What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality" by Kevin DeYoung "Messy Grace" by Caleb Kaltenbach We also reference the following Scripture: Genesis 2 Genesis 19 Ezekiel 16:47-50 Leviticus 18 & 20 Matthew 5:17-18 2 Timothy 3:16-17 2 Corinthians 6:16 1 Peter 1:16 1 Corinthians 6:9 Title Music "Welcome to the Groove" by SonicMusic
We live in an ever changing culture. Isn't it true that the Bible was written thousands of years ago and the content concerning morality wasn't understanding of post-modern era? Was Paul actually warning to people who are in love and in a monogamous relationship with the same sex that this was sin or was he referring to the practice of temple prostitutes and having many partners? Is it possible that we have misread and misunderstood a lot of the Bible for todays Christian dealing with complex issues such as Homosexuality, Gender Identity and Racial Identity? Is the Bible simple a little behind the times on this issue? Or have we possibly misapplied ancient texts to modern times poorly? Pastor Chris Talks about it.

In this episode, Pastor John and Pastor Tim continue with the topic of homosexuality, discussing some of the important biblical texts that speak to this issue, as well as some of the objections that have recently arisen in opposition to the traditional sexual ethic of the church. Overall, the aim of this episode is to help our listeners embrace love that is shaped by truth, and truth that is shared in love.

Giving might be one of the most controversial Bible topics. Should Christians give under compulsion? Will God make rich those who give much? Is it right for pastors and tv preachers to receive offerings through guilt and manipulation? Today we study the Bible's teaching on giving, and find that there are surprising blessings associated with giving, but not necessarily the blessings that the charlatans preach about.

Bob shows how the popular passage, “Judge not, lest you be judged,” is all too often quoted out of context: Jesus is not actually telling us to never judge. Instead, He is telling us to not judge others for their sin if we have not first dealt with our own sin. It is inappropriate judgment […]

This week Josh and Andy had a chance to sit down with Josh's friend and coworker Chad, to talk about and reflect on his experience as a same-sex attracted man in the church. We got into a little bit of a discussion about our own views, but this was primarily about hearing what Chad had to say. Homosexuality And Gender It is hard to imagine a more polarizing and personal point of contact between the church and today's culture than the issue of gender and homosexuality. We all have gay friends, some are family members, and we really like them. There is absolutely no pleasure found in disagreeing with a friend or family member on such a personal issue. It would be so much easier just to roll with the mainline churches, or the secular culture and call every behaviour or choice sacred, without exception. There are so many other areas we can agree with culture; that racism is evil, that wealth should be fairly distributed, that the marginalized should be protected.... why would a Christian need to think differently about this? In today's message we ask ourselves that question, and look to scripture for the answer. Resources: The Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. At the end of last year, Element did a series that answered some common questions about scripture that people have commonly asked. As the series ended, we asked the people of Element to write down their own questions that we would answer in 2017. Here we are in Part 2 of this series and the question, “What does the Bible say about homosexuality?” is definitely one of those topics that makes us take a deep breath as we think, “Hmmmm!” Kevin DeYoung’s book, What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality? is a great resource for this challenging topic. There are 1189 chapters in the bible, with over 30,000 verses, and only a dozen or so will deal directly with homosexuality. That does not mean the “traditional” view of marriage is based on nothing more than a few fragments; it means there was a way of life that was accepted for millennia and most didn’t feel the need to create a case for a marriage being between a man and a woman because it was simply a given in Jewish and Christian realms. The controversy today was not dreamed up by evangelicals; the blogs and books written by “traditionalists” are only entering the conversation because it was started by others. This dialog is a good thing if we can all approach it with grace for one another in how we talk about it and treat one another.
1 Timothy chapter 2 has been interpreted for hundreds of years in a way that has prevented women from holding positions of leadership in various religious groups. As a result, countless women have internalized the idea that they are inferior to men...
Theology For the Rest of Us | Quick Answers to the Questions About God and the Bible
There has been a moral revolution in America over the last few years, changing how people view homosexuality and other related topics. One recent expectation is the idea of complete "tolerance" of all sexual perspectives. But doesn't the Bible tell us that certain sins are an "abomination" to the Lord? If so, how should we feel about the culture shift? And how should we feel towards sexual sin such as homosexuality? In this episode, Kenny launches a mini-series about homosexuality, answering several questions brought up by regular listeners. The first question Kenny tackles is the idea of hating homosexuality. Is it Biblical to hate homosexuality? Should we hate it more or less than other sins? Kenny answers this by giving us four insights: 1- We should want people to experience God's best for them, and our passion for God's design in sexuality should supersede our passion to be against homosexuality 2- We should hate all sin and should find all sin disgusting 3- We should ask God for his grace and power to see a person separate from their sin; we ought to seek to separate a person's sinful choices from that person's identity 4- We ought to hate our own sin more than another person's sin Recommended Resources: What's the Meaning of Sex (Denny Burk) Transforming Homosexuality (Denny Burk & Heath Lambert) What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality? In this episode, Kenny interviews author, speaker, and college professor Dr. Preston Sprinkle about homosexuality, but more specifically about how Christians ought to engage with people who identify as gay. Dr. Sprinkle makes it clear: Homosexuality is not about an "issue" to be dealt with, but it is much more about people than need to be loved. Dr. Sprinkle gained national attention several years ago when he co-wrote the best selling book Erasing Hell with Francis Chan, which was a response to Rob Bell's Love Wins. Dr. Sprinkle has earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Master's Seminary as well as a Ph.D. in New Testament from Aberdeen University in the Scotland. He currently serves as the Vice President for Eternity Bible College's Extension Campus in Boise, ID. He previously taught at Cedarville University (Ohio) and at Nottingham University (U.K.). Theology For the Rest of Us | Quick Answers to the Questions About God and the Bible
In this episode, Kenny clearly explains why God labels homosexuality as a sin. Kenny starts the episode apologizing to any person who identifies as gay who has been mistreated by Christians. Kenny then challenges Christians to be consistent in their evaluation of sins. Kenny then makes the point that the Bible does indeed label homosexual behaviors as sinful (citing 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Genesis 19, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, 1 Timothy 1:10, Romans 1), but then Kenny begins to answer the question "Why?" There are typically multiple levels as to why something is sinful. The deepest layer when it come to understanding sexual sin is rooted in understanding God's ideal design, and that is one man and one woman, within the bounds of covenant marriage. During the act of sex there is something mysterious and supernatural that happens that emotionally unites the man and woman. The book of Genesis says they will become "one flesh" which is translated from the Hebrew word "echad" which speaks to plurality and diversity, but still points to a perfect unity. This is designed to reflect the Trinity. Through the creation of genders, God is reflecting both His unity and His diversity. The members of the Trinity are committed to one another, they are in covenant with one another, therefore God desires covenant before the unity, which is why we believe premarital sex is wrong. God's design for humans is for us to function as He functions, that we would mirror Him and His character. Therefore, when two men have sex, they are not mirroring the diversity of the Trinity, for this reason God labels this as sin. Our understanding of the creation account and our understanding of the Trinity point towards God's ideal for sexuality. Any behavior outside of the ideal design is sinful, including homosexual behavior. Recommended Resources: What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality?
