After a year of perfecting the recipe, we finally get to sit with LJ Govoni and Shannon Brooks to taste their delightful creation, "Hops for Hunger" -- a collaborative project that benefits Feeding Tampa Bay each time somebody buys one of the perfectly-named brews. Big Storm Brewing has been a staple for decades in the Tampa Bay region, and they truly are masters of their craft. On today's episode they walk us through the history of the company, as well as the funny story that led to our partnership with them, and ultimately to this wheaty, citrusy drink idea. They just purchased Big Blue Brewing in Cape Coral, so we'll talk to owner LG Govoni about plans for the space, making hand sanitizer, their recent Belgian-style beer releases, and more. Much, much more. Then we head to Miami, where Concrete Beach Brewery is closing their doors after 5 years. Sort of, they are being remade into the new Dogfish Head Miami. We went to Concrete Beach last November, before the quarantine, to chat with their Marketing Manager Erika Chavez about everything that was going on. I sat on the audio since I didn't want to send people to a closed brewery, and now... RED Episode #116: 30k Gauntlet Challenge Completed, Mangia Food Truck Returns, & Premium American Lager from Big Storm Brewing Company

Run Eat Drink Podcast

RUN This week we talk about earning a great medal!  We completed our 30k Gauntlet Challenge from the Medal Chasers website.  This is a series of 5k runs for each infinity stone in the “Tony Stark” version of the gantlet medal called the Nano Gantlet.  This virtual race series also benefits the Pinky Swear Foundation that supports children and their families fighting childhood cancer, just like the 10k version we completed a few weeks ago. This week we said we would reveal what’s on the back of the medal.  It is so awesome!  The runs were tough in the Florida heat, but we got it done! EAT This week, of course, was not a travel week for us, so we hit a local favorite, Mangia Food Truck while they were at Big Storm Brewing Company.  Food trucks are making a big come back, and they support our local breweries being able to open back up more fully in the current situation.  While the food truck is onsite, you can enjoy food and beer in the Taproom and at outside seating while observing all current state and local guidelines.  So we are really grateful to trucks like Mangia.  This week they had a special beer cheese on the menu made with Big Storm beer!  It was served with a local bakery’s pretzel.  Plus a new sandwich for vegetarian friends that was tasty, along with a few more of their great carnivorous offerings.  We chatted with the owners, Nancy and John Bagliani about how they got this all started and what’s coming up on their menu.  They are constantly innovating.  We can’t wait to go back for more.  They say they are steadily getting into the rotation around town, so follow Mangia on Facebook and get a tasty meal! DRINK  Big Storm Brewing Company Is of course near and dear to our hearts.  The very first beer we had on the show was their Wavemaker Amber Ale.  With our 4th anniversary fast approaching, we wanted to highlight a new beer put on their menu this week that we fell in love with, the Premium American Lager.  It’s light at 4.7 ABV and it has a great grainy and malty flavor. So session-able for the upcoming hot summer months.    THAT’S A WRAP! Special thank you to our newest founder and patron of the show, John Schroeder!  He supports the show with $5 a month and has his name on our patron wall here.  Thank you, John, for helping us to accomplish, explore, and indulge right along with you! If you love what you hear, now, you can become a patron and support the show, too!  There are multiple patronage levels from $2 to $10, each with their own special perks.     Find out more and support the show here: https://www.patreon.com/Runeatdrinkpodcast  Or if you are a Podbean user, here: https://patron.podbean.com/runeatdrinkpodcast   Share a great virtual race or a place where we should all run, eat, and drink together when this tough time is over!  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. In this episode of This is Tampa with Rob an Jen, we visit Big Storm Brewery in Clearwater, FL to speak with company president LJ Govoni. Big Storm was started in 2012 and is one of the fastest growing craft breweries in Florida. LJ gives us a glimpse behind the scenes and shares his story, as well as the story of the brewery, with us. The road to success isn't paved with gold, but as LJ shows us, with some persevearance and strategic relationships, there is a prize in the end. Big Storm is already very successful in crafting great beer, but they are just getting started as they continue to add new flavors and products, such as ice cream, coffee, and much more. Also, don't miss LJ's response to the non-Florida man story, a lightning round, how he met his wife, and the future of Big Storm.

RUN We were on a podcast called Experiences You Should Have with Gail Lovelace Menasco this week!  We loved meeting her at Podcast Movement. She gave us a chance to talk about one of our favorite race experiences, the Donna Marathon Weekend in Jacksonville that supports the Donna Foundation in the mission of helping fight the battle to end breast cancer.   We talk about Dana’s progress on his road to recovery from surgery and Aimee’s training plan to prepare for the fall race season.  In addition, we talk about how we mix up our runs during training by entering races along the way to change up the scenery of longer distances, including Southernmost Half Marathon.  Although a repeat for us, it allows us to have a weekend getaway while staying on track with training and show you more of Key West as a runcation or vacation destination. EAT This week we bring you Wicked Streatery!  After our training run over the weekend, we went out to Fort Myers Brewing Company for their Kegs & Eggs Sunday Brunch.  If you visit the Southwest Florida area, you must have the food from this truck!  Wicked Chicken and Waffles, Southwest Breakfast Bowl, and Chimichurri Steak Hash are all must-haves on the menu!   DRINK Big Storm Brewing had a new release this week: Firestorm Black IPA.  We break it down and try it for the first time as we record the show! At 5.8% ABV and 71 IBU, we did not know if we would like it or what overwhelming flavors we would get from this beer.  It was surprising.  Not an overwhelming pine flavor, but yet another great offering that we’d have another pint of from Big Storm! RUN As we said last week, Dana is injured, so Aimee had to run this week’s race on her own!  Aimee chose the Freedom 5K in Cape Coral because it had a bridge on the course and needed to incorporate some bridge work before the Anchorage RunFest!  It was a morning race, so there was a beautiful view over the water as the sun came up.  It was very hot and humid, so hydration was key!  They had one water stop setup and it was available twice on this out and back course, so that was great.  It was a safe and well-managed course.  The bridge was steep but it was great to get some of that work into training because hill work is hard to come by in Florida! The shirt was great - a dark green one with an American Flag in the middle of a star as the logo.  The swag bag... of course Aimee’s favorite part was the free pint card inside from Big Storm Brewing!  It was a great way to support the military museum in town and to get some key training in ahead of our half marathon in August. EAT We went to Danger Danger in Cape Coral because we want to continue to celebrate the awesome business independent small business owners who are bringing such amazing food to our hometown.  We had their Falafel Burger which is a crispy chickpea patty with a chimichurri and a yum yum sauce on it, pickled onion, arugula, and a wheat roll.  AND it is 100% Vegan! It was so good and a great option when we want to stay Vegan during the week.    We had their Danger Dog as well.  This is a hot dog and as it was the 4th of July, we wanted to celebrate with an All-American day meal with the Danger Danger twist.   It was a bacon-wrapped hot dog with pinto beans, avocado, pick, chipotle mayo, and jalapeño on a bun.  So good!   DRINK We went to Fort Myers Brewing Company to end our 4th of July weekend.  True, we featured this brewery on Episode #41 when we talked to Joel Germain and he took us through a great flight of beer after we ran the Cops and Joggers 5k, but they have so many great brews at this brewery and we are so happy to see that they are expanding to include a new food truck space, tasting hall, manufacturing and packaging facility, and private event space.   We had to go back and try more of their vast and ever-expanding menu of original beers!   Aimee had these beers: Key Lime Wheat 5%  Lime Shake Berliner 4% Tart Like a Tiger 3.2% Caramel Strong 9.2% Happy 4th of July!  Did you run in a great 4th of July race?  Let us know about it so we can shout you out next week.  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. RED Episode #69 RUN We asked:  What are your running mantras when things get challenging on a run or during a period of injury?  You submitted some great feedback.  We share and discuss what keeps you going when things get tough. EAT It was a training week for us, so we explored and indulged in a local restaurant, Point 57, right here in Cape Coral.  We were there for brunch, but they also have the regular menu available all day.  Aimee had the Cast Iron Ribeye with a blue cheese fondue in a skillet served with an onion, green bean and bacon hash.  Dana had the Crispy Pork Shank with blue cheese grits and apple chutney.  So tasty! DRINK At Point 57, there are some pretty tasty cocktails and local brews on tap.  Aimee had the Dead on Bourbon, which is worth ordering for the presentation in a smoking skull, rye whiskey, coffee flavors, and a bit of spice.  The Summertime in Mexico is tasty as well. Tequila, spiced pear, cardamom, lemon, honey, and maple make this a refreshing and unique cocktail on a hot day.  Dana had Islamorada Sandbar Sunday, which made us recall the trip we took to their taproom last October. Yes, we also had a great time this weekend at Big Storm celebrating the release of their Category 3 Belgian Trippel.  Thanks to everyone who was able to join us live!  At 9.5 ABV, the darker golden body and strength of Cat 3 is far and away heavier than Category 1, and vastly different from Category 2, with its dried fruit notes and darker body.  We also got a bonus release to try, Bromosa Tangerine Brut IPA.  Yep, Aimee loved it!  Shocking! Tangerine flavor with a bit of hop but not too much on the end of the sip, it was not overly sweet, but the fruit aroma and flavor were just right for a hot Florida day. Happy 4th of July this week!  Are you running in a great 4th of July race?  Let us know about it so we can shout you out next week.  And let us know, like we said in the show, where you find a great steak, too!  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net.
