Sīkie putni, tādi kā zīlītes, ir apodziņa pamatbarība, tāpat kā sīkie zīdītāji, tādi kā strupastes, piemēram. Bet ligzdošanas laikā apodziņi ir sastopami galvenokārt vecos mežos, vēlams tādos, kas ir strukturāli daudzveidīgi, kur ir veci koki, kur ir kritalas. Un pats svarīgākais, kur ir daudz dobumainu koku, jo apodziņš ir dobumperētājs, bet paši dobumus nekaļ. Veci mežu ir piemēroti dzeņiem, tāpēc ka tur ir daudz barības šajos atmirstošajos kokos, un kur ir daudz dzeņu, tur arī dobumi un attiecīgi vieta arī citiem dobumperētājiem. Apodziņš ir mazākā Eiropas pūcīte. Tas ir 50 līdz 100 gramus smags putniņš, kas ir aptuveni mājas strazdu izmērā. Dižraibā dzeņa dobuma skreja ir aptuveni piecu centimetru diametrā. Putniņam jābūt spējīgam tādā ielīst. Maziņš putniņš. Kad mikroorganisms vairs nav vienkārši organisms, bet jau tiek saukts par dzīvnieku?  Mikroorganisms vai dzīvnieks - tāds ir jautājums. Varētu šķist, ka mūsdienās ar pašreizējām pētniecības metodēm viss ir skaidrāks par skaidru, un zinātniekiem vairs nebūtu jālauza galva, kuru organismu kādā kategorijā ierindot. Bet sarunas gaitā ar ģenētiķi, Latvijas Universitātes profesoru Īzaku Rašalu ātri vien top skaidrs, ka nemaz tik vienkārša tā lieta nav.
